Utvärdering av den biologiska reningen av processavloppsvattnet vid GE Healthcare i Uppsala / An evaluation of the biological wastewater treatment at GE Healthcare in UppsalaFridlund, Malin January 2005 (has links)
<p>GE Healthcare operates in Uppsala (Sweden) and develops systems, equipments and medium to purify medical substances. Discussions with the local authority concerning planed far-reaching changes and upgrades of the biological process techniques for sewage management, aroused the question about revising the terms of permit for the activity. Therefore it seemed necessary to evaluate a newly installed biological process technique, which is the background of this thesis. The evaluated biological treatment process was built in 2003 and consists of a biological reactor filled with moving bed carriers with a high surface area for biological growth. At the time of the project the biological wastewater treatment plant consisted of a flow equalization facility and two following parallel biological processes; a biological reactor with moving bed carriers and a tower trickling filter.</p><p>The aim of this thesis was to survey the function of the biological reactor with respect to the reduction of organic matter. Further to clarify which circumstances that have a negative effect on the organic reduction. During the three forthcoming years, an extensive reconstruction of the biological wastewater treatment facility will be accomplished. During the construction period the flow equalization will be very limited. Therefore an emission forecast with respect to organic matter was performed comprising the construction period during the years 2005, 2006 and 2007. This to estimate the safety margin to the emission standard during the construction period.</p><p>Several parameters were surveyed during the project, water temperature, pH, plural nutrition elements, flow, oxygen concentration, suspended solids, organic load and microbial activity. At two occasions, the parameters were extensively studied during a 24-hour period respectively. Two capacity experiments were performed in order to evaluate the organic reduction at different organic loads. The obtained results together with an estimation regarding the organic load performed by AB Ångpanneföreningen were used for the emission forecast. The forecast considered two cases, operation with and without dosage of a flow with high organic content from the local solvent recycling facility (called T10-dosage).</p><p>According to the forecast, the emission standard will be fulfilled during an average month regarding the organic load. This without T10-dosage and with an average reduction of 55 %. To fulfill the standard during a month with maximum organic load, a reduction of 65 and 75 % will be required in the cases without and with T10-dosage respectively. The organic reduction is negatively effected by lasting loads of 7 kg CODfilt/m3 or higher, or by a great increase of the load in a short period of time. Sporadic peaks regarding the organic load appeared to have temporary or no negative effects on the reduction. Flow variations during evenings, nights and weekends caused variations in the organic load with negative effect of the reduction rate. The oxygen concentration in the biological reactor has a conclusive significance of the reduction rate, a lower concentration than 2 mg/l affects the reduction rate in a negative way. The buffering capacity in the biofilm reactor showed to work excellently, the pH value varied between 6.8 and 8.9. There is an immediate risk of temperatures over 40oC during the construction period. This could have a negative influence of the organic reduction. Individual measured temperatures of 38oC did not have a negative effect on the reduction rate. The amount of suspended solids varied a lot in the outflow from the biological reactor and will continue to do so during the construction period.</p> / <p>GE Healthcare bedriver sin verksamhet i Uppsala vilken består av att utveckla system, utrustning och media för att rena läkemedelssubstanser.

<p>Hallsta paper mill uses large amounts of water during the pulp and paper making processes. The wastewater is treated in two separate activated sludge processes referred to as BIO 1 and BIO 2. The main aim is to reduce the organic substance content, measured as COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) before the wastewater is released into the environment. Since the effluent produced is very rich in organic substances, the addition of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are necessary to give satisfactory treatment results. Problems with sludge bulking sometimes occur which lead to increased levels of suspended matter and nutrients in the effluent. Periods of high concentration of phosphorus is also of great concern. The aim of this study is to investigate the causality behind the sludge bulking, with the help of scientific literature and analysis of previously compiled data using multivariate data analysis. COD and nutrients present in the influent will also be surveyed to identify variations in concentration caused by the paper making process.</p><p>The scientific literature points toward low nitrogen and phosphorus levels as the major causes of the bulking sludge, as this leads to increased growth of filamentous bacteria to the detriment of the preferred flocculating species. A full scale experiment was conducted in an attempt to evaluate sufficient dosage levels of N and P to reduce this problem. The experiment has produced stabile results with low percentages of suspended organic matter and nutrients.</p><p>Evaluation of the previously collected data using Multivariate Data Analysis did not lead to any correlation between variables being found, other than the impact of sludge concentration on COD-reduction. No relevant explanation to periods of high phosphorus levels could be found neither in the scientific literature nor in the multivariate data analysis.</p><p>Bleaching of the paper pulp, with hydrogen peroxide and lye, results in a subsequent increase in COD concentration in the wastewater. The study shows an increased COD in the water approximately 12 hours after the increased dosing of these bleaching agents. Also the amounts of easily degradable COD increases following increased dosage of hydrogen peroxide and lye. The content of easily accessible phosphorus in the influent represents a minimum of 25 % and 20 % of the amount theoretically required for BIO1 and BIO2 respectively. The influent levels of nitrogen represents 33 % and 100 % for BIO1 and BIO2 respectively.</p><p>From this study it has been possible to deduce that a controlled dosage of nutrients in relation to the incoming level of COD, is of great importance to the efficient treatment of COD rich effluent in the systems under investigation at Hallsta Papermill.</p> / <p>Vid Hallsta Pappersbruk används stora mängder vatten vid tillverkningen av massa och papper.

Wastewater use in Agriculture in Andhra Pradesh, India : An evaluation of irrigation water quality in reference to associated health risks and agricultural suitabilityHofstedt, Charlotta January 2005 (has links)
The use of untreated domestic sewage in agriculture is a growing practice in many parts of the world. It is being looked upon as a valuable and reliable resource in water scarce communities. Wastewater is usually rich in nutrients and the use results in high yields without the need for artificial fertilisers. But with the use of untreated wastewater follows a number of associated health risks, e.g. a higher prevalence of helminth infections has been seen among wastewater users compared to non-users. This water quality study was performed along the River Musi in Andhra Pradesh, India. The Musi River flows through the city of Hyderabad carrying the most of the town’s wastewater. Downstream of Hyderabad the wastewater is used by farmers for irrigation. Along the river weirs are constructed which diverts the irrigation water into canals and reservoirs are formed where the flow velocity slows down. The study area stretches from Hyderabad and 28.7 km downstream. The hypothesis was that the existing irrigation infrastructure acts like Wastewater Stabilisation Ponds and the aim was to quantify the impact of the weirs on water quality and to evaluate the irrigation water quality in reference to associated health risks and agricultural suitability. Within the study area the BOD, E coli and Nematode removals were 86.9%, 99.9% and 99.9% respectively. Despite the high removal the E coli and Nematodes, the concentrations exceed WHO guidelines for unrestricted and restricted irrigation, and there exists an excess risk of intestinal nematode- and enteric infections for farmers. Dissolved oxygen and salinity increases downstream and due to the high salinity farmers could experience reduced crop yields. By looking at removal patterns, and the change in water quality parameters, the conclusion can be made that the reservoirs act like anaerobic ponds in a Wastewater Stabilisation Pond system.</p>

Calibration of a dynamic model for the activated sludge process at Henriksdal wastewater treatment plantHellstedt, Cajsa January 2005 (has links)
To simulate the activated sludge process at a wastewater treatment plant a dynamic model that describes the process is needed. In 1987 IWA, International Water Association presented ASM1, Activated Sludge Model No.1 which still is the most widely used model for this process. In this thesis the ASM1 has been used to describe the activated sludge process. The work is a part of a European project, HIPCON (Holistic Integrated Process CONtrol) at IVL, Swedish Environmental Research Institute.</p><p>The main objective of the work was to calibrate a model that realistically describes the activated sludge process and secondary sedimentation at Henriksdal wastewater treatment plant in Stockholm. A benchmark model in MATLAB/Simulink was used as a base and rebuilt and extended to fit the process of Henriksdal. In the model ASM1 is used to describe the activated sludge process. The settler is modelled with a mass balance model where the settling velocity is described by a double exponential function. The parameters used in both models have to be calibrated to fit the wastewater treatment plant. To find information about Henriksdal two measuring campaigns were performed to provide data for calibration and validation and to gather information about the composition of the incoming wastewater. From this data a model was developed and calibrated for the process at Henriksdal. After calibration the obtained model worked very well for modelling average values but did not adjust quite as well to fast dynamic changes.</p>

Cold-climate constructed wetland applications in Canada and Northern China and modeling applications in the Canadian Arctic using SubWet 2.0Chouinard, ANNIE 22 October 2013 (has links)
This comparative study explores the mechanisms of pollutant removal efficiency in cold-climate constructed wetlands (CWs) and investigates the benefits, standing and practicability of using these systems to treat wastewater in Canada and Northern China. Treatment efficiencies defined by the Canadian and Northern China experience vary considerably. Experience in both countries shows that the majority of effluent values are generally better than that required by discharge standards in Canada and China. A review of the available case studies on cold weather treatment in both countries indicates that this technology is feasible in Canada and Northern China, although further monitoring data are needed to optimize CW design and ensure that the effluent quality standards are consistently met.
In both of these countries and around the globe, increasingly strict water quality standards and the growing application of treatment wetlands for wastewater treatment is an important motive for the development of better numerical models as predictive process design tools. An investigation of the SubWet 2.0 model, a horizontal subsurface flow modeling program used to predict the level of treatment that can be expected was conducted. It has been shown that SubWet can consider the influence of several factors at one time, where empirical equations are generally not able to consider more than two factors at one time and usually in isolation of the other influential parameters. Three different data sets, two from natural wetlands from the Canadian Arctic and one from a CW in Africa were used to illustrate how SubWet can be calibrated to specific wetlands. Compared to other models, it is suggested that SubWet provides one of the best modeling options available for natural tundra wetlands. Further calibration of SubWet with twelve municipal treatment wetlands in the Canadian Arctic clearly demonstrated its ability to model treatment performance within natural tundra wetlands and thus provide an additional predictive tool to aid northern stakeholders in the treatment of municipal effluents. It is anticipated that increased monitoring and the generation of additional measured data will help to better identify the level of year to year variability and improve the overall predictive capability of the model. / Thesis (Master, Civil Engineering) -- Queen's University, 2013-10-22 17:14:23.322

Evaluation of a bark adsobent for removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewaterKrona, Johanna January 2017 (has links)
During and after medical treatment, pharmaceutical compounds as well as their metabolites and conjugates are excreted from the users through urine and feces. The pharmaceuticals end up in wastewater treatment plants, which are not designed to deal with this kind of organic micro-pollutant. Eventually the pharmaceuticals end up in the environment where they can have adverse physiological and behavioral effects on aquatic life and could contribute to the spread of antibiotic resistance among microorganisms. Adsorption to activated carbon is an established method for removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewater. It is however quite expensive and it is of interest to identify cost-effective alternatives. One possible alternative is bark, which is a common by-product from forest industry and has a complex microstructure and high porosity compared to many other naturally occurring materials. In order to investigate the potential of using bark to remove pharmaceuticals from municipal wastewater four column filters were built, two with activated carbon and two with bark. They were used in an experiment conducted at Kungsängsverket, the largest wastewater treatment plant in Uppsala municipality. The objectives were to assess pharmaceutical concentrations in treated wastewater at Kungsängsverket and to compare the performance of bark and activated carbon filters under different loading rates. During this time the filters were run at different loading rates and two different types of bark was used. 24 common pharmaceuticals from different therapeutic groups were targeted. The pharmaceutical concentrations measured at Kungsängsverket were generally low, but mean concentrations of five pharmaceuticals (atenolol, metoprolol, furosemide, hydrochlorothizide and diclofenac) exceeded 250 ng/l. Out of these, four have been shown to have adverse effects on aquatic life and it would be preferable if they were not released into the recipient. Bark was not as good at removing pharmaceuticals from wastewater as activated carbon was, but decent removal rates were achieved for several compounds. The removal rates of either filter type did not seem to be significantly impacted by variations in loading rate or bark size. The concentrations of a few compounds increased after treatment with the bark filters and the reason for this is not clear. One possibility is interference from other organic substances in the wastewater or the bark, but determining the reason for this increase should be a priority for any further research on the subject. Another problem encountered during the project that is likely to pose a problem for future implementation is that the bark filters were very sensitive to clogging. Running the filters at full scale would require frequent back-washing which would be a disadvantage from both economical and practical reasons.

Industrial wastewater treatment with anaerobic moving bed biofilm reactordi Biase, Alessandro January 2016 (has links)
The overall goal of the thesis was to develop and optimize the moving bed biofilm reactor technology under anaerobic conditions. The thesis work was divided into two different series of experiments. Hence, at first, the reactor start-up on synthetic substrate was evaluated and it was proven that the anaerobic moving bed biofilm reactor technology could successfully treat concentrated wastewater. Subsequently, a study on Fort Garry Brewery wastewater was conducted to optimize the process for a typical North American industrial wastewater. The aim was successfully achieved and a potential design to treat Fort Garry Brewery wastewater was developed. The anaerobic moving bed biofilm reactor was found to be capable in treating brewery wastewater with potential savings to the industry paying surcharges for discharging wastewater over the city sewer bylaw limits. / October 2016

Microalgae : A Green Purification of Reject Water for Biogas ProductionWaern, Sandra January 2016 (has links)
Microalgae are a diverse group of unicellular microorganisms found in various environments, ranging from small garden ponds to lakes with extreme salinity. Common for all microalgae is their ability to convert solar energy and carbon dioxide into chemical energy via photosynthesis. Additionally, they are capable of assimilating large amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus to produce proteins and lipids. These abilities have made microalgae an interesting candidate for next generation wastewater treatment coupled with production of biogas, a renewable energy source in advancement. At the Nykvarn wastewater treatment plant in Linköping, Sweden, 15,400,000 m3 of wastewater are treated annually to remove nitrogen and phosphorus that otherwise would risk to cause eutrophication in surrounding lakes and rivers. Moreover, the treatment plant manages large amounts of sewage sludge that is anaerobically digested to produce biogas and simultaneously reduce the sludge volumes. At the Nykvarn wastewater treatment plant, dewatering of the digested sludge results in a sludge fraction of about 30 % dry content and reject water, which is very nutrient-rich and therefore requires treatment in a SHARON process before it is reintroduced to the main stream of the wastewater treatment plant. In this thesis, the potential of microalgae for nutrient assimilation was studied by monitoring the nutrient removal efficiency of a mixed culture of microalgae when fed with 1) 100 % incoming wastewater, 2) 80 % incoming wastewater + 20 % reject water and 3) 60 % incoming wastewater + 40 % reject water. Furthermore, the effect of a process additive on the nutrient removal efficiency was evaluated. The results showed that microalgae are capable of removing 100 % of ingoing ammonium nitrogen and phosphate phosphorus when fed with incoming wastewater. At transition to 20 % and 40 % reject water, the culture was light-limited with a resulting ammonium reduction of 60 % and a phosphate reduction of around 30 %. The process additive slightly improved the ammonium reduction, however, mainly by formation of nitrite and nitrate by nitrifying bacteria. Moreover, a bio-methane potential test compared the methane potential of the microalgal biomass and the biomass from the SHARON process. The test resulted in an accumulated methane production around 70 mL g-1 VS-1 for the microalgal biomass and 35 mL g-1 VS-1 for the biomass from the SHARON process. That is, the mixed microalgal culture used in this experiment has a methane potential twice that of the biomass from the SHARON process. Finally, an economic analysis of a microalgae based process for purification of reject water showed that the operating costs exceed those of the SHARON process due to high energy consumption. It is thus necessary to choose a cultivation system that effectively utilize the solar energy, as well as maximize the biogas yield from anaerobic digestion of microalgal biomass.

Fluorescence spectroscopy as a monitoring technique for membrane bioreactor water reclamation systemsScott, Jeffrey D. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Biological & Agricultural Engineering / Stacy L. Hutchinson / The shortage of clean, usable water is a global problem (Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, 2005). As much as 80% of the world’s population has been reported to be in areas of high water security risk due to a convergence of factors, such as watershed disturbance, pollution, water resource development and biotic factors (Voeroesmarty et al., 2010). Water reuse technologies are a potential solution to this problem. However, implementation of treatment technologies for improved water reuse require rapid, effective monitoring techniques capable of insuring treatment quality. Fluorescence spectroscopy has shown potential for wastewater treatment monitoring due to its sensitivity, selectivity, and capacity to be employed in-situ. Online fluorescence data and full fluorescence excitation-emission matrices coupled with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) were employed to evaluate the treatment performance of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) at Fort Riley, KS. Specific research goals were to evaluate the effectiveness of fluorescence for monitoring wastewater treatment and to determine the contamination detection limit of fluorescence techniques in a non-potable reuse scenario. Study results revealed a two-stage startup period, the first 60 days indicated membrane cake layer formation and the first 90 days showed signs of oxic tank maturation. Fluorescence was found to be effective at monitoring carbon concentration trends throughout the MBR system, showed preferential removal of protein-like dissolved organic matter (DOM), and an increase in biodegradation of DOM as the oxic tank matured. A ratio of the humic-like fluorescent components to the protein-like fluorescent components correlated to TOC removal (R² = .845, p < .001). Also, fluorescence was able to detect contamination in the effluent at the 0.74-1.24 mg C/L level using two wavelength pairs, indicating that effective real-time monitoring for contamination can be accomplished with minimal instrumentation and post-processing of data.
