Modelling marine vessels engaged in wildlife-viewing behaviour using Automatic Identification Systems (AIS)

Observation of marine animals in their environment – whale-watching – has grown greatly in recent years, bringing risk to the animals. Of particular concern are harmful impacts on marine mammals, some of which are endangered. As a result, regulations have been developed for their protection, but these conservation measures require enforcement across a broad geographic region, which is difficult due to limited monitoring resources. A ship-borne information transmission system called AIS – Automatic Identification System – can provide information-rich marine vessel movement data that can be used to passively monitor vessels engaged in viewing wildlife, aiding regulatory bodies with compliance enforcement. Few studies explore the use of AIS data to determine when vessels are engaged in wildlife-viewing, and as such little guidance exists on how to implement classification models appropriately. The objective of this thesis is to use AIS data to evaluate the accuracy and utility of existing classification models to detect vessels engaged in observing wildlife, and determine whether information about species being observed can be extracted. Using a control set of observed cetacean encounter data, three classification models were statistically assessed. From this, a hidden Markov model was chosen for detailed analysis in the vicinity surrounding Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada. The resulting analysis concluded that a hidden Markov unsupervised classification approach was feasible for detecting vessel behaviours and differentiating species type. These findings suggest AIS can aid managers and the commercial whale-watching industry in making informed decisions regarding conservation regulations and their compliance. / Graduate / 2022-08-12

Social-Ecological Resilience and Whale Conservation

Whale species face numerous man-made threats, such as pollution, whaling, climate change and whale-watching, that threaten their survival. International environmental law has several regulations in place that aim, either directly or indirectly, at conserving whales. To manage the dynamic and uncertain conditions in which whales live, it is important for the law to adopt a social-ecological resilience perspective. Whales can function in different social-ecological systems as exemplified by the system of whale-watching in Iceland. This thesis examines various legal regimes related to whale conservation and the extent to which they support or provide for resilience thinking. While the selected regimes demonstrate resilience features to varying degrees, direct references to resilience in international environmental law are rare. However, supplementary materials from a convention can also acknowledge the importance of embracing a resilience perspective. Legal regimes that promote social-ecological resilience may enhance the law's ability to protect and manage whale species in a more sustainable manner.

Population Genetics of Hudson Bay Beluga Whales (Delphinapterus leucas): An Analysis of Population Structure and Gene Flow using Mitochondrial DNA Sequences and Multilocus DNA Fingerprinting / Population Genetics of Hudson Bay Beluga Whales

Beluga whales in Canadian waters are subdivided into at least six genetically distinct stocks maintained by geographic separation and philopatry to estuaries in summer. Belugas in eastern and western Hudson Bay have previously been shown to be compose genetically distinct populations using mitochondrial restriction analysis. It is not known whether these stocks are further subdivided on the basis of specific estuarine use. Mitochondrial DNA control region sequences were used to investigate variation among belugas sampled at several sites along eastern Hudson Bay, Hudson Strait and Ungava Bay. 320 bp were sequenced, including the highly variable 5' region of control region, in 126 belugas. 17 variable sites and 17 haplotypes, which clustered into 2 related groups, were detected among the whales sequenced. Haplotypes of group A were found mostly in eastern Hudson Bay sites, while B group haplotypes were predominant in northern populations. Significant differences in frequencies of haplotype groups were found between eastern Hudson Bay and Southern Hudson Strait/Ungava Bay populations, indicating they are genetically distinct populations. Haplotype distribution patterns also suggested possible differences between belugas using different estuaries along eastern Hudson Bay. The presence of both groups in each population indicated some exchange of individuals between populations, and/or between eastern and western Hudson Bay. Multilocus DNA fingerprinting was used to investigate the extent of gene flow between eastern and western Hudson Bay belugas via interbreeding on common wintering grounds in Hudson Strait. Belugas from St. Lawrence estuary and the Mackenzie Delta were also analyzed to measure their genetic relatedness to Hudson Bay whales as well as for purposes of comparison to earlier fingerprinting analyses. While results supported lower genetic diversity within the St. Lawrence population, the range of bandsharing within and between populations was otherwise low (0.09 -0.17 for Jeffreys 33.15 and 0.12-0.22 for Jeffreys 33.6). Mantel tests showed differences among St. Lawrence, Hudson Bay, and Mackenzie Delta populations, but not within Hudson Bay. The conflicting nature of the data did not allow conclusions regarding gene flow. Predictive models of cetacean distributions off the west coast of Scotland

The main purpose of this study was to produce and test the reliability of predictive models of cetacean distributions off the west coast of Scotland. Passive acoustic and visual surveys were carried out from platforms of opportunity between 2003 and 2005. Acoustic identifications were made primarily of harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), delphinids, and sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). Generalised Additive Models (GAMs) were used to relate species’ distributions to a range of environmental variables over a range of temporal and spatial scales. Predictive models of delphinid distributions showed both inter-annual and inter-month variations. Combining all data for all months and years resulted in a model that combined the environmental influences from each monthly and yearly model. Overall, delphinids were found to associate with the deep (> 400m) warm water (10.5°C-12.5°C), and in areas of deep thermocline. Relationships between sperm whales and environmental variables were consistent over changes in grain size (9 km or 18 km), but not between areas. Although sperm whales were distributed in deep water characterised by weak thermoclines and strong haloclines in the most northerly area (Faroe-Shetland Channel), they were found in deep productive areas with cold surface temperature in the more southerly waters (Rockall Trough). Within the southern Inner Hebrides, high use areas for harbour porpoises were consistently predicted over time (in years) and with differing survey techniques (acoustic versus visual), but not over space (southern Inner Hebrides versus whole of the Inner Hebrides). Harbour porpoises were mainly distributed in areas with low tidal currents and with higher detection rates during spring tides. The use of prey as a predictor variable within models of delphinid distribution shows some promise: there were correlations between delphinid and herring (Clupea harengus) in shelf-waters in 2005 but not in 2004. These models can be used in mitigating acoustic threats to cetaceans in predicted high use areas off the west coast of Scotland.

C'est dans le contexte délicat du milieu marin, marqué par l'écroulement des stockshalieutiques et la conservation urgente des espèces de prédateurs marins, que s'inscrit cette étude sur la déprédation (i.e. prélèvement des poissons capturés) par les orques et les cachalots sur la pêche à lapalangre dans la ZEE de l'Archipel de Crozet.Le premier objectif a été d'évaluer les conséquences socio-économiques du phénomène. Entre 2003 et2010 les orques ont interagi avec un total de 43,3% des palangres relevées et les cachalots avec 57,5%,les deux espèces étant présentes simultanément sur 27.8% des palangres (n=5438). Les orques, seulesou associées aux cachalots ont été estimées prélever 926 ± 76 tonnes de légines sur l'ensemble de lapériode, représentant un taux de déprédation de 17,7%.Trois facteurs opérationnels ont été identifiés comme faisant varier la déprédation par les orques : i)utilisation de palangres courtes (<5000m) en absence d'orques, ii) déplacement du navire sur desdistances supérieures à 40nq pour quitter une zone confrontée à la déprédation et changer de zone, iii)utilisation de vitesse de remontée des hameçons à bord supérieures à 50 H.min-1.Le deuxième objectif de cette étude a été d'évaluer les conséquences démographiques de ladéprédation sur la population d'orques de Crozet. Le suivi à long terme des individus a permis demettre en évidence des réponses différentielles des unités sociales en fonction de leur degréd'interaction avec les pêcheries. / Over the last 50 years, fisheries have undergone a major decline worldwide. With an increasedcompetition for resource, depredation (i.e. removal of catches on fishing gear) has recently become amajor case of conflict between humans and marine predators. In this study I focused on thedepredation on Patagonian toothfish fisheries by killer and sperm whales in the Crozet EEZ. The firstpart of the study aimed at assessing the socio-economic consequences of this issue. Killer and spermwhales have interacted with 43.3% and 57.5% of longlines (n=6751) respectively from 2003 to 2010.Killer whales, alone or co-occurring with sperm whales were responsible for an estimated loss of 926± 76 tons of toothfish over that period, which represents 17.7% of the total catch.Three operational factors were identified as influencing significantly depredation levels: i) the use ofshort longlines (<5000m) in absence of killer whales, ii) the displacement of vessels on distances>40nq to leave the whales behind and iii) the use of longline hauling speed > 50 H.min-1.The second aim of the study was to investigate the consequences of depredation on the Crozet killerwhale population. The long term monitoring of individuals showed divergent demographic trajectoriesrelated to the depredation level of matrilines. During the 1990s, matrilines interacting with fisherieshave undergone a high mortality due to lethal interactions with illegal fishing vessels using explosivesto repel the whales.

Parcelas orgânicas de macroalgas, madeira e carcaças de baleia criam importantes oasis de enriquecimento orgânico no assoalho marinho de regiões profundas, mas a estrutura e sucessão ecológica da macrofauna sedimentar ao redor destes ambientes ainda é pouco conhecida. Parcelas de macroalgas e madeira foram artificialmente implantadas próximas a uma carcaça de baleia de 30-ton hà uma profundidade de 1670 m na Bacia de Santa Cruz, Pacífico NE. Ao redor de cada ilha orgânica, foram estudados os padrões espaciais e temporais de enriquecimento sedimentar orgânico e a estrutura e sucessão temporal da macrofauna em escalas temporais que variam de 0.25 à 7 anos. Ainda, o nível de sobreposição entre espécies colonizadoras das parcelas orgânicas e na baleia, foram comparados com comunidades de exudações frias (uma localizada na bacia de São Clemente, Pacífico NE) e fontes hidrotermais. Em geral, a abundância da macrofauna sedimentar foi altamente elevada em períodos de intenso enriquecimento orgânico, com decréscimo da diversidade da macrofauna num raio de 0.5 metros das parcelas. Nas parcelas de macroalgas e madeira, espécies oportunistas e tolerantes à sulfetos atingiram altas densidades após o pico de enriquecimento orgânico sedimentar (0.25 e 1.8 anos, respectivamente), enquanto que ao redor da carcaça de baleia, a macrofauna foi também dominada por organismos quimiossintéticos com associações simbióticas bacterianas, e ainda espécies oportunistas que se alimentavam do abundante carpete bacteriano sobre a superfície sedimentar. Os sedimentos ao redor das parcelas de macroalgas e madeira sustentam baixas taxas de degradação microbiana e sulfeto intersticial, recrutando assim um limitado número de organismos quimioautotróficos e consequentemente com baixa sobreposição de espécies com outros ambientes redutores. Na carcaça de baleia, os sedimentos sustentam intensa degradação microbiana e altos níveis de sulfeto, mas diferenças marcantes nas biogeoquímica e nas cadeias tróficas presentes nestas carcaças resultam em baixa sobreposição de espécies com a fauna de exsudações frias e fontes hidrotermais. Conclui-se que sedimentos enriquecidos organicamente ao redor de macroalgas, madeiras e carcaças de baleia criam importantes hábitats para a persistência e evolução de espécies dependentes de condições sedimentares redutoras, e assim estas ilhas devem contribuir para a diversidade regional e global dos ecossistemas de mar profundo. / Sunken parcels of macroalgae, wood and whale carcasses provide important oases of organic enrichment at the deep-sea floor, but sediment community structure and succession around these habitat islands are poorly evaluated. We experimentally implanted parcels of kelp and wood falls nearby a 30-ton deep-sea whale-fall at 1670 m in the Santa Cruz Basin (SCr; NE Pacific). At each organic island, we aimed to evaluate patterns of organic enrichment and spatial and temporal patterns of macrofaunal community structure and succession over time scales of 0.25 to 7y. Additionally, species overlap between kelp-, wood- and whale-falls with nearby cold-seep communities were investigated. In general, the abundance of infaunal macrobenthos was highly elevated at periods of intense organic enrichment at all organic falls, with decreased macrofaunal diversity and evenness within 0.5 meters of the falls. At kelp and wood falls opportunistic species and sulfide tolerant microbial grazers (dorvilleid polychaetes) abounded after the peak of sedimentary enrichment (0.25y and 1.8y, respectively), while the whale-fall macrofauna was highly abundant from 4.5 to 6.8 y, and was dominated by enrichment opportunist, chemoautotrophic-symbiont-hosting and heterotrophic species grazing sulfur-oxidizing bacterial mats. Sediments around kelp and wood parcels provided lowintensity reducing conditions, which sustain a limited chemoautotrophically-based fauna, with low levels of species overlap among other chemosynthetic habitats in the deep NE Pacific. Whale-fall sediments harbor many species and trophic types not present in background sediments, but there were low levels of species overlap between the whalefall, cold seeps and hydrothermal vents, explained by differences in biogeochemistry and food webs among these habitats. We conclude that organically enriched sediments around kelp, wood and whale-falls may provide important habitat islands for the persistence and evolution of species dependent on organic- and sulfide-rich conditions at the deep-sea floor and contribute to regional and global diversity in deep-sea ecosystems.

Efeito de parâmetros ambientais na migração de baleias-jubarte (Megaptera novaeangliae) entre Mar de Scotia e Banco dos Abrolhos / Effect of environmental parameters in the migration of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) between Scotia Sea and Abrolhos Bank

Fatores exógenos, como fotoperíodo, temperatura da superfície do mar e abundância de presas, e endógenos, como os ciclos circadianos e circanuais e alterações metabólicas são conhecidos como iniciadores dos movimentos migratórios. Este trabalho tem como objetivo estabelecer os principais parâmetros iniciadores da migração das baleias-jubarte. Foram analisados o fotoperíodo, índice de oscilação do oceano austral (SOI), temperatura da superfície do mar, concentração de clorofila-a e densidade de krill em relação ao número máximo de indivíduos avistados e o dia do pico de avistagem. O fotoperíodo mostrou ser o principal fator que influencia a migração da Antártica em direção a Abrolhos, enquanto que o caminho contrário, além de fotoperíodo, parece ser influenciado também pelo os fatores tais como temperatura da superfície do mar e a quantidade de presas disponíveis no verão anterior. Quanto maior a densidade de krill, maior o número máximo de indivíduos avistados e a temporada reprodutiva mais longa. O SOI mostrou ter influência no ciclo reprodutivo do krill. Valores negativos registraram maior densidade de krill e valores positivos, menor densidade de krill, através do modelo GLM. Altos valores de TSM apresentaram correlação negativa com a densidade de krill, e com o número de baleias avistadas e o tempo de permanência na área reprodutiva, indicando que o aquecimento da região antártica impõe condições não favoráveis para a temporada reprodutiva das baleias. / Exogenous factors, such as photoperiod, sea surface temperature and abundance of prey, and endogenous, such circadian and circannual cycles and metabolic changes are known as initiators of migratory movements. This work aims to establish the main parameters initiators of the migration of the humpback whales. The photoperiod, the Southern Ocean Index (SOI), the sea surface temperature, the chlorophyll-a concentration and the density of krill were analyzed in relation to the maximum number of individuals sighted and the duration of the reproductive season. The photoperiod showed to be the main factor that influences the migration from Antarctica to Abrolhos, while the opposite way, besides photoperiod, seemed to be influenced also by other factors such as sea surface temperature and the amount of prey available in the previous summer. The higher the density of krill, the greater the maximum number of individuals sighted and the longer the reproductive season. The SOI showed to have influence on the reproductive cycle of krill. Negative values correspond to higher density of krill, and positive values, lower density of krill, through the GLM model. High values of TSM presented negative correlation with the density of krill, and with the number of whales sighted and the reproductive season duration in the reproductive area, indicating that the Antartic warming impose unfavorable conditions for the reproductive season of whales.
