Caffeine : evidence-based guidance for use during upper-body exercise and for individuals with a spinal cord injury

Graham-Paulson, Terri S. January 2016 (has links)
The use of nutritional supplements (NS) is common in able-bodied (AB) athletic populations and good evidence exists for a number of NS such as sports drinks, protein powder, creatine, caffeine and buffering agents. However, little evidence is available regarding the popularity and efficacy of NS in a population of athletes with physical impairments.

Recomendações tecnológicas de projeto para o desenvolvimento de cadeira de rodas de propulsão manual: uma proposta para ampliar o grau de mobilidade dos cadeirantes a partir do design / Technological design recommendations for the development of manual wheelchair propulsion: a proposal to extend the rate of mobility of wheelchair users from the design

Ivan Ricardo Rodrigues Carriel 13 May 2014 (has links)
In essence, this thesis brings a technical compendium to assist in the design of manual wheelchair propulsion, aiming the efficient expansion of ergonomics and user mobility. These recommendation were development from an extensive literature review and application of a usability test with a technological reference wheelchair. The theoretical concepts that underlie this thesis cover the historical and technical context of disability, the ethical assumptions for product design, the design recommendations already established in the scientific literature, the aspects of ease of use under the user-centered design, the motor development of the disabled person, the biomechanics of manual propulsion and related forms of handling such equipment. A systematic methodological research was based on three approaches. The first selected a technological reference from a sample of 101 models of wheelchairs available in the Brazilian market. After select the product, apply a usability test taking into the ISO 20282-2.2006 (E) which enabled us to verify the degree of satisfaction and demonstrate that the wheelchairs are inefficient to attend the ergonomic necessity and mobility of users. In this study 43 subjects took part of test, both genders, on average between 31 and 37 years. Finally, using the software were analyzed Kinovea different patterns of motion of manual propulsion. In the last approach, settled parameters, temporal, anthropometric and postural which served to increase and consolidate new design recommendations. These recommendations cover the five systems that set a wheelchair: (a) propulsion system, (b) displacement, (c) support for the body, (d) structural and (e) morphology. Finally, methodological reflections project, an exploration of the future of wheelchairs in Brazil and some suggestions for research in the field of design for health, which arose during the development of this research.

Abstract: This study aims to present a proposal of an alternative mechanism that is able to surpass architectural barriers like ramps with an inclination up to 8 degrees. The conventional manual wheelchair requires muscular effort from the user at rims of propulsion. Although this thousandyear- old mechanism of propulsion isn't efficient enough to surpass architectural barriers. This alternative mechanism, composed by a combination of propellers levers and selective clutch, allows the user to break the rear wheels when advancing ramps, and free wheels at the moment of conventional propulsion. For this study it was considered a Working Model 3D® environment to simulate the wheelchairs at the moment of progressive surpass of ramps. A bibliographical review envolving the binomial wheelchair - user, considering standards of propulsion, performance and existing alternative mechanisms, generated the proposal of this present alternative mechanism. / Mestrado / Mecanica dos Sólidos e Projeto Mecanico / Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica

L’homme en fauteuil : approche de genre : contribution à une sociologie critique du handicap / Man in wheelchair : gender approach : contribution to critical sociology in disability studies

Dufour, Pierre 23 June 2011 (has links)
The idea of disability usually implies an unfortunate difference towards a desirable model. However, some sides of the culture stemming from disability studies and activists movements suggest that disabilities aren’t only inpairments. They generate norms too. This thesis proposes the surmise of disability as a creative matter. The survey focuses on men in wheelchairs but we also pay attention to some facets of french disability associations. Able-bodied schemas are pregnant in these both points. However, in the ordinary run of things, some disabled people create social norms which can be shared but they think these are illegitimate norms. The resources to understand the experience of disability regardless of the meanings derived from the standard body are found. But they aren’t visible much in France. Then french people can’t use them in order to build their gender lives and snatches of creation stay on the threshold of instituted meanings. The messages of french associations are dependant on dominant able-bodied language. Consequently, the theme of disability lose his own affirmative and conflicting dimensions.
