The Commercialization of YouTube: Can Apology Videos as a Product Ever be Authentic?

In recent years, YouTube has evolved from a user-generated platform to a platform that thrives on professionalized and marketable content, otherwise known as the era of the social media influencer (Kim, 2012;). This thesis applies neutralization and Millsian theories to help unpack the widespread fraud and deceptive advertising on the platform within a neoliberal capitalist context. The focal points of this thesis are apology videos in the wake of deceptive/fraudulent advertising scandals, cancel culture, and the symbiotic relationship that influencers and corporations share in paid sponsorships on YouTube. The findings indicate that influencers function similarly to corporate entities during scandals and engage in neutralizations to protect their reputation, brand, and business relationships (Schoultz & Flyghed, 2019; Whyte, 2016). This thesis also points to the legal challenges in holding influencers accountable at the level of domestic advertising agencies and on YouTube itself. Lastly, this thesis questions the invisibility of corporations in these scandals regarding how this may be indicative of larger manifestations of corporate power in society.

Detta examensarbete handlar om ekonomisk brottslighet inom verksamheter med fokus på gärningsmannen. Det har identifierats psykologiska och sociologiska faktorer och studien besvarar även vilka förutsättningar som krävs för att ekobrottslingen ska kunna begå brottet. Den typiska ekobrottslingen har identifierats att vara en vit medelåldersman med hög socioekonomisk status. För att ekonomisk brottslighet inom verksamheter ska kunna begås krävs det att möjligheten föreligger för gärningsmannen vilket oftast uppstår genom en anställning inom en organisation. Examensarbetet behandlar även preventiva insatser som används inom verksamheter för att stoppa ekonomisk brottslighet. / This degree project in criminology is about occupational and corporate crime with focus on the perpetrator. Psychological and sociological factors has been recognized and also the conditions that are required for the crime to occur. The typical perpetrator for this kind of crime has been identified to be a white middle aged man with high socioeconomic status. It obliges an opportunity for the offender to commit an economical crime which arises through employment in an organisation. The essay also process the crime prevention that is applied in businesses to stop white collar crime.

Den gröna omställningen har lett till stora investeringar i norra Sveriges industrier. Dessa investeringar har skapat fler jobb och därav behov av fler individer. På grund av norra Sveriges låga befolkningstäthet i kombination med ökad efterfrågan har företag problem att attrahera och rekrytera personal till sin verksamhet. Denna studie undersökte och identifierade faktorer som är viktiga för att en stor industri i norra Sverige ska anses attraktiv ifrån ett medarbetarperspektiv. De faktorer som identifierades var genomgående viktigt för att underlätta framtida marknadsföring samt bibehålla nuvarande kompetens. Detta undersöktes genom en kvalitativ studie som grundade sig i employer branding och Herzbergs tvåfaktorteori. Totalt intervjuades åtta respondenter, varav tre var tjänstemän och fem kollektivanställda genom semistrukturerade intervjuer. För att säkerställa intervjuguiden var relevant för studiens syfte baserades frågorna på Herzbergs motivation- och hygienfaktorer. Bearbetning av datamaterialet utfördes genom tematisk analys. Resultatet visade att kollektivanställda värderade relationer till medarbetare och möjlighet till utveckling högst, medan tjänstemän värderade intressanta arbetsuppgifter och flexibilitet högst. Viktiga faktorer för båda grupper var företagskulturen och jobbsäkerhet. Unika egenskaper för en stor industri var större jobbtrygghet, utvecklingsmöjligheter och variation.

Economic performance and corporate structure: an analysis of corporate crime causation

The objective of this study was to assess the affect of economic performance, relative performance and corporate structure on the frequency of corporate crime. The data utilized in this study were obtained from the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research and were originally collected by Marshall Clinard and Peter Yeager (1979). In addition to this data source, disaggregated economic data were collected in order to assess the volatility of economic performance for the corporations in the study. The collected data were then merged with the existing data set using the corporate identification numbers provided with an agreement of anonymity. Pearsons's r was used to assess the zero-order relationships among all the variables in the analysis. A series of T-tests were also performed to examine whether offending corporations had significantly lower economic performance measures than did their non-offending counterparts. Finally, multiple regression techniques were utilized to assess the predictive capability of economic performance and corporate structure on corporate offending. The bivariate analysis showed little correlation among the economic performance variables and the total and total serious violation categories. Concentration and diversification were significantly correlated with the violation categories. Diversification was also found to be highly correlated in a negative direction with all of the volatility measures. Similar results were found when analyzing the relative performance measures. When comparing the mean economic scores of offending and non-offending corporations, mean performance was generally lower among offending corporations. Offending corporations, however, were shown to experience less economic volatility than their non-offending counterparts. With respect to relative performance, offending corporations were found to have lower mean economic performance measures than non-offending firms. However, offenders were found to be less volatile relative to their industry than non-offenders. The regression analysis revealed a positive relationship with the trend of profit and a negative relationship with volatility of profit, both contradict theoretical expectations. In addition, the structural variables were found to be positively related to corporate violations, but they had little mediational effect with respect to the economic variables, as hypothesized. Based on the findings of this study, the limitations and implication for an economic explanation of corporate offending are discussed. / M.S.

'Stressed out of my box': employee experience of lean working and occupational ill-health in clerical work in the UK public sector

No / Occupational health and safety (OHS) is under-researched in the sociology of work and employment. This deficit is most pronounced for white-collar occupations. Despite growing awareness of the significance of psychosocial conditions – notably stress – and musculoskeletal disorders, white-collar work is considered by conventional OHS discourse to be ‘safe’. This study’s locus is clerical processing in the UK public sector, specifically Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, in the context of efficiency savings programmes. The key initiative was lean working, which involved redesigned workflow, task fragmentation, standardization and individual targets. Utilizing a holistic model of white-collar OHS and in-depth quantitative and qualitative data, the evidence of widespread self-reported ill-health symptoms is compelling. Statistical tests of association demonstrate that the transformed work organization that accompanied lean working contributed most to employees’, particularly women’s, ill-health complaints.
