A pesquisa objetivou traçar o perfil dessas mulheres, a vida familiar, os códigos de conduta diante de limitações impostas por códigos jurídicos, morais e religiosos, e as relações estabelecidas entre elas com a economia local visto que Juazeiro se tratava de uma cidade considerada um entreposto comercial e local de passagem de viajantes. As fontes utilizadas demonstram a atuação das viúvas, ainda que de forma discreta, na sociedade e na economia regional, onde a negociação seja no âmbito familiar ou nos negócios, trouxe um retrato da história das mulheres e da família do sertão baiano neste período. The study titled Widows in the court of the interior: family, gender and wealth in Juazeiro (1850-1890), focuses on the lives of widows in the town of Juazeiro, Bahia State, in the second half of the nineteenth century. The research aimed to profile these women, family life, codes of conduct in the face of limitations imposed by legal codes, moral and religious, and their relationship with the local economy since it was considered a city and a commercial warehouse local passenger traffic. The sources used to demonstrate performance of the widows, albeit slight, in society and the economy of the city, where the trading is in the family or business, brought a picture of the history of women and the family of Bahia during this period. / Salvador

O presente trabalho busca compreender as estratégias utilizadas por viúvas para sobreviver em uma sociedade de Antigo Regime no sul da América portuguesa. Para tanto, por meio das trajetórias de quatro moradoras das freguesias de Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Viamão e Nossa Senhora dos Anjos na segunda metade do século XVIII, procuramos entender as estratégias utilizadas para se conseguir um segundo matrimônio e os fatores que nele influenciavam como o número de filhos dependentes, a idade e os bens possuídos ao enviuvar. Além disso, investigamos a participação dessas mulheres na economia e na circulação de riquezas dentro de suas freguesias. Por fim, analisamos as redes de relações estabelecidas por essas viúvas por meio do compadrio. / This work seeks to understand the strategies used by widows to survive in an Ancien Régime society in the South of Portuguese America. To this end, through the lives of four residents of the parishes of Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Viamão and Nossa Senhora dos Anjos in the second half of the eighteenth century, we aim to understand the strategies used to achieve a second marriage and the factors that influenced in it as the number of dependent children, widow´s age and the property owned by her when she becomes a widow. Furthermore, we investigated the involvement of these women in the economy and circulation of wealth within their parishes. Finally, we analyze the relations established by these widows through compadrazgo.

We will research the pretentions of royal and ecclesiastical agents to convert and integrate the bailadeiras to a Christian project of colonization, from the decrees issued in the five provincial councils of Goa (made in the chronological cut above), of the legislation contained in the ?Book of the Father of the Christians?, from the royal determinations and from the viceroys of the State of India. We will investigate how the interdependence of the political and religious power favored the issuance of decrees that aimed at homogenizing the local societies, precisely the bailadeiras and the hindu widows from a Christian discipline. / A presente disserta??o busca analisar as iniciativas de coer??o ? convers?o de vi?vas hindus e bailadeiras em Goa, entre 1567 a 1606. Pesquisaremos as pretens?es dos agentes r?gios e eclesi?sticos em converter e integrar as bailadeiras a um projeto crist?o de coloniza??o, a partir dos decretos emitidos nos cinco conc?lios provinciais de Goa (realizados no recorte cronol?gico supracitado), da legisla??o contida no ?Livro do Pai dos Crist?os?, das determina??es r?gias e dos vice-reis do Estado da ?ndia. Investigaremos assim, como a interdepend?ncia do poder pol?tico e religioso favoreceu a emiss?o de decretos que visavam homogeneizar as sociedades locais, precisamente bailadeiras e as vi?vas hindus, a partir de uma disciplina crist?.

Durante a segunda metade do século XVIII até a chegada da Família Real portuguesa ao Brasil, havia mulheres viúvas livres que compravam e vendiam bens, administravam escravos, vendiam açúcar ou café e criavam filhos na capitania do Rio de Janeiro. Nosso objetivo é estudar essas mulheres que, com a morte dos maridos, passaram a chefes de domicílio, mas continuavam mães. Para tanto, analisamos os inventários post-mortem sob a guarda do Arquivo Nacional do Rio de Janeiro e documentos relacionados ao tema no Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino. Muitas viúvas que examinamos herdaram do marido metade de tudo o que o seu casal havia conseguido amealhar nos anos que estiveram juntos. Essas mulheres adquiriram capacidade jurídica para decidir o que fazer com tudo aquilo que passou às suas mãos após a morte do esposo. Além disso, muitas delas eram tutoras de seus filhos o que lhes garantia a administração do patrimônio deles até sua maioridade e, algumas, sabiam ler e escrever. Entretanto nem todas puderam desfrutar de uma vida tranquila durante os dias que se seguiram à perda do marido. Várias delas perderam todo, ou grande parte de seu patrimônio, com o pagamento de dívidas do casal. São essas mulheres que nos propomos a examinar em nosso trabalho. / During the second half of the 18th century, until the Portuguese royal family arrival Brazil, there were free widowed women who bought and sold goods, admnistrated slaves, engaged on the sugar cane sale and other commodities trade, and raised their children in Rio de Janeiro captaincy. Our main purpose is to study these women who became household head after their husbands death, however continuing absorbed on their mothers tasks. Therefore, we analyzed the post-mortem inventories of these couples under the custody of the National Archive of Rio de Janeiro and other related sources on the Overseas Historical Archive. Many of these women we studied inherited from their husbands half of everything their couples had managed to harvest in the years they had been together. These women acquired legal capacity to decide what to do with everything that passed into their hands after the husbands\' death. Furthermore, many of these women became guardians of their husbands inheritors 6 which assured them the administration of the children heritage until they achieved the age of majority. Some of these women could also read and write. However, many of these widows were not in a position to enjoy a peaceful life after their husbands deceased because part of them lost large amounts of their inheritance by paying the couples debts. These are the free women we propose to investigate in our work.
