A perceptual exploration of women's golfing apparel qualities and its influence on the consumers' purchasing decision

The purpose of this study was to explore how consumer’s perception of women’s golfing apparel qualities influenced consumer’s purchase decisions. In fact Swinker and Hines (2006) pointed out that consumer perceptions of apparel quality are viewed as a multi-dimensional concept and should be evaluated on several levels. Numerous apparel quality studies have examined how perception of apparel quality has influenced consumer purchase decisions. However, there has been little or no research documented on how female consumers perceive women’s golfing apparel quality and how this may influence consumer purchase decisions in a South African context. Evaluation of apparel quality occurs at two stages during the consumer decision-making process. Apparel quality is evaluated in-store at the decision-making process stage and at the post-purchase evaluation stage. The apparel qualities that women golfers use during these stages may not be the same. In light of this a phenomenological approach was used to explore apparel quality for women’s golfing apparel which allowed the researcher to focus on the actual experience and perception of participants in their natural environment. Moreover, this approach allowed participants to describe their thoughts on physical (intrinsic) apparel qualities, extrinsic apparel qualities as well as behavioural (functional and aesthetic) apparel qualities found in women’s golfing apparel. Data were collected through means of a multi-method approach whereby different data collection instruments were applied. In this regard focus group discussions, design card sort and a sentence completion task were used which addressed the objectives set out in the study. A convenient sampling strategy was used to recruit participants for the focus group discussions. This sample consisted of women golfers from the Woodhill and Silverlakes Clubs situated in the East of Pretoria. From the results of the study on the perceptual exploration of women’s golfing apparel qualities and the influence on consumer purchase decisions, it was indicated that participants viewed apparel quality as a multidimensional concept. Physical, behavioural and extrinsic apparel qualities were used to evaluate women’s golfing apparel on which they based their purchase decisions. / Life and Consumer Sciences / M. Consumer Science

Gender and racial stereotyping in rape coverage: an analysis of rape coverage in Grocott's Mail

This thesis analyzes rape coverage in a Grahamstown newspaper, Grocott’s Mail. Critical discourse analysis is used to discuss and analyze articles about rape that appear in Grocott’s Mail between October 14th 2008 and October 29th 2009. Drawing on existing literature on ‘rape myths’ in media coverage of rape, this thesis argues that Grocott’s Mail perpetuates racial and gender stereotypes through the way in which it reports on rape. While not all of the articles included in the analysis use rape myths, most use one or more when discussing rape incidents. Specifically, Grocott’s Mail tends to use rape myths that blame the victim for the rape and de-emphasize the role of the perpetrator in the rape. This is problematic as it sustains existing racial and gender inequalities.

The survival strategies of unemployed rural women : a case study of Wooldridge

Despite decades of gender research and public action by civil society, policy makers continue to neglect the role of women as breadwinners who work at improving the socio-economic conditions in rural areas such as Wooldridge, a traditional rural village in the Amathole district of the Eastern Cape Province. The apartheid system created an environment that continues to perpetuate both poverty and gender inequality in rural areas. Hence, rural women in Wooldridge still experience poverty, despite welfare benefits. They are located in a poverty-stricken area without basic infrastructure and with little or no access to economic assets. They use primitive methods and indigenous knowledge to develop survival strategies. This study argues that unemployed rural women in Wooldridge cannot survive without assistance from government. Indigenous knowledge and agricultural as well as non-agricultural activities are critical to household livelihoods in Wooldridge. These activities are an important route through which these rural women can escape poverty. The primary objective of this research was to obtain a better understanding of how unemployed rural women survive in Wooldridge. Furthermore, the necessary conditions required to sustain livelihood in the rural areas were identified. This was mainly done to help alleviate the plight of rural women in Wooldridge and to improve the quality of life of the rural population. The aim is to generate a policy response to rural women that is economically development-oriented. The study was based on five research objectives. The first objective was to identify the survival strategies of unemployed rural women in Wooldridge; the second to ascertain what can be done to alleviate the plight of rural women in Wooldridge. The third objective was to ascertain what has been v done to address the needs of rural women in the Wooldridge area by actors of development, such as government and non-governmental organisations. The fourth objective was to identify the constraints faced by unemployed rural women in Wooldridge in achieving food security and generating income, with the last objective to make recommendations regarding policies that can enhance rural economic development and assist unemployed rural women to reduce poverty. The main finding in terms of the first research objective is that the survival strategies of unemployed rural women are welfare benefits, the selling of assets, remittances, handicraft production and vegetable gardens. In terms of the second research objective, the main finding is that investment in human capital through the empowerment of women will assist them in improving the quality of life of the Wooldridge community. Empowerment involves skills and training, education and access to basic services, expertise regarding credit, land, the growing of vegetables and income-generating projects. The main finding in terms of the third research objective is that the Peddie Women Support Centre that is located in the city centre of Ngqushwa does not have the capacity to reach out to rural areas. Rural women in Wooldridge have not received responses to their plights from government or from development practitioners. These actors of development play an important role in empowerment. In terms of the fourth research objective, the main finding is that structural constraints hinder the economic activity of rural women in Wooldridge. Government policy that encourages investment in infrastructure using labour-intensive methods will eliminate service backlogs in underserviced areas such as Wooldridge. The main finding in terms of the fifth research objective is to ascertain the impact that new legislation can have to ensure that rural women have the same access and entitlement to land and resources as women from urban areas. Furthermore, service-improvement programmes should be developed and micro-enterprises and agricultural and non-agricultural activities that will generate income and employment should be encouraged in order to reduce poverty in Wooldridge.

Traditional leadership and the use of cultural laws in land administration: implications for rural women's land rights in a transforming South Africa

This dissertation critically examines how traditional leaders use cultural laws to allocate land to women and to allow women to participate in land administration in communal areas. Given the government's commitment to gender equity in all spheres of life as stipulated in Section 9 (3) of the South African Constitution (Act 108 of 1996), the dissertation examines whether related legislation and policy (such as CLARA and TLGFA) alone can guarantee equitable access to land for women and their participation in land administration structures in communal areas where patriarchy dominates. In essence, the study interrogates whether state intervention through formalizing laws that govern land matters do achieve gender equity while cultural laws still exist in communal areas. Based on the view that land in communal areas is held by the state and administered by traditional leaders who have historically discriminated against women, the dissertation employs a case study method to examine whether cultural laws are exercised when women apply for a piece of land at the three levels of traditional authority viz: village, sub-village and traditional council levels in the Matolweni village of the Nqadu Tribal Authority. Although women are often the de facto rights holders in rural areas as a result of male migration to urban areas, findings seem to indicate that it is difficult and/or sometimes impossible to translate paper laws into practice while cultural laws are still operating. For effective transformation to occur, the study recommends that unless a strong women's rural movement emerges, coupled with a socialist feminist position that advocates for a radical transformation of rural society to defeat the patriarchal norms and standards, traditional leaders will continue to discriminate against women in land issues.

Marginalisation of women in educational management

M.Ed. / The problem in this research lies in the absence of women in management positions and women being poorly represented in decision-making in Soweto Schools. The purpose of this research is to argue for the increased number of women in educational management and to discuss the problems that women encounter in management positions in the Gauteng Department of Education. This is a qualitative research. The researcher interviewed, observed and recorded four school principals, five heads of Department and SADTU gender president. The findings are that the legacy of women discrimination still prevails from the apartheid era and male colleagues enjoy seniority. The researcher's recommendation is that no person may unfairly discriminate, directly or indirectly against an employee in any employment policy or practice on one or more grounds including gender, race, sex, ethnic or social origin, colour, sexual orientation, age, political opinion, marital status and culture. There should be no harassment of employees.

Hair representations among Black South African women : exploring identity and notions of beauty

South Africa is a country of diversity, culture and various identities; and beneath this diversity, lays the complexity of defining and owning a space for oneself. This study was motivated with the intention to understand Black women’s representations in South Africa as well as the social interactions evident in the relationship between a Black woman and her hair. Literature elucidates on the historical richness of representation for Black people as well as the contemporary relevance of representation for Black women in particular. Furthermore, beauty discourse extends beyond the merely corporeal and finds meaning in historical, political, and circumstantial frames of thought. Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with Black women. These interviews generated three discursive themes – hair and politics, hair and media and finally, circumstantial self-representation. Exploring these themes revealed that hair, as a projection of the self, is constantly redefining itself and its meaning in a progressive social culture.
