Hatha Yoga: corpo e espiritualidade

Storni, Aline Telles 31 August 2013 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-04-17T15:02:03Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 2178333 bytes, checksum: 979a231c6637e42d69936136ddf399c4 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-08-31 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Introduction: The starting point of our research object is a historical study of the view of the body, corporeality and spirituality through the Yoga tradition a documentary research correlated with changes in body perceptions expressed by the students of a Yoga class in the city of João Pessoa, between 2012 and 2013. Objective: Analyze the changing perceptions and spiritual body through the practice of Yoga - the awakening of spirituality, expressed by students in a class of Yoga, under an extension project. Methods: The methodological approach of this study includes a qualitative approach called descriptive and exploratory research, with the development of research tools adapted to the reality under study towards the social context of the subjects. We can consider that the great relevance of this Master Thesis is in combining a research of bibliographical character with field research, through the method of quasi-experimental research design, under a university extension program. In this sense, we can characterize our work also as an action-research. Analysis and Results: Within the total sample of questionnaires applied, 18 student questionnaires with minimum frequency were selected 70% by the end of the course. The selected students completed the questionnaires at two times during the Yoga course: in the beginning of the classes in October 2012 and at the end, in December 2012, with only one break, of almost three months 26 classes. After conducting a t-test for repeated measurements, no significant difference was verified in the pre and post-test means as a function of the scale factors (p>0.05). This result suggests that there has been no regression or progress in spiritual well-being (Bem Estar Espiritual BEE) in any of the factors of those practicing Hatha-Yoga during the period of the extension program. Conclusions: Thus, we can verify that the statements composing this ethnographic research corroborate for one of the initial objectives of the research, which is precisely to analyze the relationship between the theory and the practice of Yoga with the changes in spiritual and body perception the awakening of spirituality expressed by the students of a Yoga class in a university extension program (PROBEX). However, we believe that the great merit of our research is not exactly in the statistical results obtained from the BEE questionnaire, but in the very use of this questionnaire in a pioneer way with no previous publications, in an academic research about Yoga in Brazil. given these findings, we can associate the sense of body-corporeality of the human being to the physical posture signs of Yoga, through body and cognitive capturing of the practice, ideas and concepts reflected in concrete reality, such as the posture before the world, the people, personal and spiritual experiences, combining with the personal, community, environmental and transcendental factors of the BEE analysis. Keywords: Yoga, Hatha-Yoga, body, spirituality.

Yoga som omvårdnadsåtgärd vid depression : En litteraturstudie / Yoga as a nursing intervention for individuals with major depression : A literature study

Huros, Emma, Noord, Emelie January 2018 (has links)
Depression is a complex disorder causing most years lost due to disability in highincome countries as well as low-income countries. The most common treatments offered patients today does not always provide sufficient relief of symptoms and patients seek for complementary nursing interventions. The registered nurse need to have knowledge about different nursing interventions to provide the care each patient needs and asks for. The purpose of this study was to describe the effect yoga had on depression. A literature review was conducted and the result is based on the results of 11 scientific articles examining the antidepressant effect of yoga for individuals with major depression. The results of the scientific articles were reviewed and a content analysis was conducted. Yoga had an effect on depressive symptoms. The result of the literature review is presented as two themes, The relieving function of yoga and The enhancing function of yoga. The benefits the participants received from yoga was for example reduced ruminations, stress reduction, improved sleep and self-esteem. They could also break the pattern of isolation. Future research should include larger longitudinal randomized controlled studies to strengthen the scientific basis for the antidepressant effect yoga has on depression.

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The irritable bowel syndrome is a common functional bowel disorder characterized by recurrent abdominal discomfort and abnormal bowel function. Experimental evidence indicates that the quality of life and stress can exacerbate the symptoms of IBS. It was intended throughout this research study the relationship between the practice of yoga with improvement in symptoms of patients diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Additionally, we intended to also contribute to the description of the behavioral variables that can act in the syndrome. An analysis of the repertoire of four patients diagnosed with IBS, two of them being diagnosed with diarrhea, one diagnosed with constipation and one with mixed bowel habits. Six weeks of yoga classes were offered to participants at different stages of research. Records of daily activities, meals and bowel function were made by the participants both at baseline and in the treatment phase. Through these records was possible to identify changes in participants' symptoms. Contrary to some studies, the practice of yoga has not shown significant improvement in symptoms of participants. This result may be related to the maintenance of contingency that maintains the SII for each participant.

The influence of yoga therapy on anxiety

Clark, Lindsay Clare January 2010 (has links)
A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree: Masters of Arts Degree in Psychology (Counselling), in the Department of Psychology of the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2010. / Anxiety is a major concern within society, owing to its high prevalence. It is usually treated with psychopharmacological medications, which are costly for government health departments. Although there are reports of its effectiveness and minimal expense of yoga therapy as a treatment for anxiety, such reports lack any substantial evidence base. This relative gap in the scientific literature provided motivation for the present research. It was hypothesised that the influence of yoga therapy would decrease levels of anxiety among individuals. The study was conducted using a mixed approach, by means of a quasi-experimental design with both quantitative and qualitative methods and repeated measures ANOVA and thematic content analysis as research techniques. The experimental group consisted of a convenience sample of 18 practitioners of yoga, who practiced yoga at least twice a week for the duration of three months. The control group similarly comprised a convenience sample of 19 participants, selected from the clinical and counselling psychology masters class at the University of Zululand, who did not practice yoga over the time of the yoga therapeutic intervention. The Beck Anxiety Inventory was administered to the experimental group and the control group prior to and immediately after the three months of intervention. Prior to the intervention of yoga therapy, the experimental group completed a qualitative questionnaire. This assessed their perceptions and experiences of yoga, as well as their experience of the influence of yoga therapy on anxiety. The influence of yoga intervention was evaluated by the difference in anxiety levels prior to and immediately succeeding the intervention. The data from the Beck Anxiety Inventory was analysed quantitatively through the use of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The qualitative questionnaires were evaluated according to thematic analysis. The quantitative results indicated that, although regular yoga therapy was associated with significant decreases in anxiety over a period of three months, these changes were not significant when compared with a control group. Hence no causative inferences can be made. However, the analysis revealed significant between group differences for age and education, indicating that older and more educated participants’ anxiety scores decreased significantly more than those of younger and less educated participants. The qualitative results from the experimental group revealed positive outcomes. The participants reported that yoga practice provided relief from anxiety by means of encouraging them to remain focussed in the present moment, gain a sense of equilibrium in life, as well as feel calm and relaxed. Although further randomised controlled studies with larger samples are needed, this research provided some scientific evidence that yoga therapy may be an effective intervention for decreasing perceived anxiety as a potentially cost effective intervention for anxiety reduction.

The effects of yoga during pregnancy on the apgar

DeGinder, Desiree Ihilani 01 January 2008 (has links)
Only a small amount of research on yoga during pregnancy has been done. Yoga is a cost effective tool that expectant mothers can utilize to improve their unborn child's health. There is strong evidence that yoga is useful in having healthier babies. The absence of research on yoga during pregnancy is the impetus for the present study. The independent variable in. the proposed study is yoga participation (yes or no). It was hypothesized that women who participated in Prenatal Yoga would deliver babies with higher APGAR scores. Participants consisted of 18 mothers. The findings did not support the hypothesis, the difference in APGAR scores between the two conditions was not significant, F(l, 16) = 0.312,p = .584.

Personalizing the experience : the emergence of yoga therapy

Bertoldi, Jeana Christine 06 October 2014 (has links)
Yoga has recently been a subject of some media attention, both positive and negative. Some people advocate it for its mental and physical benefits, but others are also concerned that it might cause or lead to injury, particularly in the Western world where it's commonly seen primarily as a form of exercise. Yoga therapy emerged in part because of such concerns. Though people have used yoga to aid in health and wellness for as long as the practice has existed, the idea of yoga therapy being its own specialized field is relatively new. Yoga therapists hope to personalize the experience of yoga by working with people with various mental and physical conditions and giving them customized programs. Using quotes from professionals and people with personal yoga experience, this article explores the roots of yoga therapy, yoga itself: its praises, criticisms, science and a small sample of its plentiful history. It also addresses the definition of yoga therapy, specialties in the field, its professional organization and possibilities for the future. The question of whether yoga therapy can gain credibility and become a reliable healthcare resource has not yet been answered, though there are those who say their own personal experiences are enough to convince them one way or the other. In any case, yoga and all its various forms of practice likely won't disappear anytime soon. / text

Comparison of acute heart rate variability responses to relaxation alone vs. relaxation preceded by Hatha yoga

Unknown Date (has links)
The objective of this study was to compare the acute heart rate variability responses to relaxation alone versus relaxation preceded by Hatha yoga. Twenty women and men (aged 18-50 years) participated in the study. Participants completed a yoga plus relaxation (YR) session and a relaxation only (R) session. The YR condition showed significant changes from baseline in HR (bpm, p < 0.001), RR (ms, p < 0.001), pNN50 (%, p = 0.009), LF (% p = 0.008) and HF (% p = 0.035). The R condition showed significant changes from baseline in HR (bpm, p < 0.001), RR (ms, p < 0.001), HF (ms2, p = 0.004), LF (%, p = 0.005), HF (%, p = 0.008) and LF/HF (%, p = 0.008). There were no significant differences between conditions for the changes from baseline for any of the variables. The results demonstrate that relaxation produces favorable changes in indices of heart rate variability whether alone or preceded by about of Hatha yoga. / by Nina Markil. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2010. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. "O Yogasutra, de Patañjali - Tradução e análise da obra, à luz de seus fundamentos contextuais, intertextuais e lingüísticos" / "The Yogasutra, oj Patañjali - Translation and analysis of the text, based on its contextual, intertextual and linguistic aspects"

Gulmini, Lilian Cristina 29 May 2002 (has links)
The present work, entitled “The Yogasutra, of Patañjali – translation and analysis of the text, based on its contextual, intertextual and linguistic aspects", consists of a commented translation, from sanskrit to portuguese, of a text which is considered by scholars and also by India’s cultural tradition as the oldest and the most important treatise on the subject of Yoga that has been preserved up to the present: the Yogasutra. The text, which was composed probably around the 2nd century b.C., certainly reflects much older cultural practices, and according to sanskrit tradition its 194 concise sentences or sutra fully comprehend the main aspects of the system of Yoga as known by the names of Rajayoga or Yogadarçana. Moreover, the system of Yoga as codified by Patañjali has an unbreakable connection with another system known as Samkhyadarçana, with which it maintains a constant dialogue by means of intertextual references, and in which it finds its theoretical foundations. The first part of our work consists of a review of the main aspects of this text’s cultural background (ancient India) and the systems in analysis. The translation that follows is divided in four main chapters, exactly as exposed by Patañjali, but the sanskrit sentences within each chapter have also been divided by us in thematic groups to which titles have been given, as well as extensive commentaries. Besides the translation itself, the interpretations we offer to these sanskrit sentences are based not only on Vyasa’s traditional sanskrit commentary, the YogabhaLya, but also on the Samkhya treatises, mainly the Samkhyakarika and the Samkhyapravacanasutra. In this sense, our objective has been bringing to the surface of our exposition the underlying theoretical unity of these traditionally “twin" schools of Samkhyayogadarçana, as conceived by Indian culture, and for this purpose we have also organized and exposed, throughout our commentaries, more than a hundred original sentences (sutra) and commentaries of these Samkhya treatises. A glossary of the whole vocabulary of the Yogasutra, together with their sanskrit roots, our portuguese translations and the numbers of the sentences where the words are referred to in sanskrit treatises, has also been prepared. This has been our attempt to turn into a meaningful and cohesive “whole" the main cultural and contextual aspects of the Yogasutra with the help of modern linguistic theories such as intertextuality, as well as discourse analysis and semiotics applied to cultural studies.
