Healing Architecture for Troubled Nightowls: Restoring Natural Rhythms in Nocturnal U Street

Kallushi, Abi Elena 03 February 2016 (has links)
This thesis is an exploration of architecture as an active participant in human life, not just as a stage. When architecture is considered a participant it contributes to the improvement of our quality of life as well as aiding  the healing process when we fall ill. As more people are diagnosed with anxiety and sleep disorders, the thesis considered questions of how the places in which we carry out our day-to-day lives improve the prognosis and, further, can architecture be used as a powerful tool for healing? It is possible that our disconnection from nature is partially responsible for our disrupted sleep patterns and misplaced anxieties. Perhaps natural elements and rhythms are too absent in our daily urban lives. But as more of us move into cities and our urban centers become denser, designers must find clever ways to help city owls reset their circadian rhythm. Architecture can help reestablish that bond with nature. This thesis explores an architecture of healing by proposing a program and design that follows the day and night circadian rhythm of our bodies, which in turn follow the sun and other natural phenomena. Located in a tricky triangular site in one of the busiest nighttime neighborhoods of Washington DC, a wellness center and sleep clinic would allow city dwellers to find a peaceful oasis for healing. In parallel, this thesis is also a study of collage as a design tool, as well as designing from details and the human scale. / Master of Architecture

Hadders, Helen January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to document and analyze the presence of yoga in school in the city of Värmland region, Sweden. To this day, there is a lack of emperic studies of yoga in schools and therefore, it is interesting to find out how yoga will be usefull in schools. The chosen method for this study was to observe and find out how students and teachers practice yoga in a secular contexts during school lessons. The critical part of using yoga in schools is about the background from yoga, and how yoga can be connected with religious and Hinduism spirituality. The results from this study show that yoga in school is more like an activity with a series of movements with focus on wellness and with the possibility to refresh the body and brain during a school lesson, and this without any connections of religious contexts at all.

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 7130870 bytes, checksum: b8d00faa6818dc481a8a8fe3f40e5910 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-10-17 / Our dissertation main objective is to provide a critical view about the practice of mantras in the context of Purna Yoga (or Full Yoga), launching under the Sciences of Religions an ethnographical look over one of the main spiritual heritage of India, which continue to be part important Sadhana of several lines and branches of Yoga, thus seeking to understand these sounds, effects and their meanings. To have a general understanding of the Mantras we will discuss in the first chapter some of these sacred phonemes that are considered important for the tradition of Yoga. The mantras selected were: The OM mantra, the Gayatri Mantra, Mantra Hare Krishna (The Vaishnava Maha-Mantra). These are considered universal mantras that are practiced in various traditions, including the specific tradition on which we had observed the Purna Yoga or Full Yoga of Sri Aurobindo. In the second chapter we deepen concepts of Full Yoga and present elements of field research, through our travel experience by the ashrams of India, which experienced important practices of Yoga mantras linked to this. In the third chapter we present the results of interviews with leading masters and teachers of Full Yoga in different parts of India as well as Brazilian masters and instructors. In addition we also present a description of all the spiritual atmosphere of the visited ashrans through a participatory research in which the researcher, maintaining an academic look, experience the field through its praxis. We strive through our field research to observe exactly how these mantras are being practiced today in the context of full Yoga.

Impact of Yoga on Mental Well-Being

Gerber, Monica 08 1900 (has links)
The present study sought to more rigourously explore outcomes of psychological well-being immediately following a psychotherapeutic yoga class. Specifically, the study hypothesized improvements in state anxiety and subjective well-being as well as an observable relationship between state and trait mindfulness following a yoga intervention, all while controlling for differences between yoga instructors, prior yoga experience, and participant endorsements of psychological symptoms. Previous yoga experience was not found to be a significant factor in any of the tested hypotheses. Findings revealed that psychotherapeutic yoga decreased anxiety and increased subjective well-being, even after controlling for therapist variability, prior yoga experience, and client diagnosis. Results also indicate differential impacts on decreased anxiety and increased subjective well-being by class instructor. This is the first study to examine outcomes of an ongoing yoga based-practices in the naturalistic setting of an outpatient counseling center while rigorously controlling for confounding factors (e.g. therapist variability). Methodological and statistical limitations are discussed in depth, and future directions to improve on this study and clarify the present findings are emphasized.

Participation in Yoga: Anxiety, Depression, and Health-Related Quality of Life Measures in College Students

Veltri, Katie 01 January 2006 (has links)
The experimenter's purpose was to assess whether short-term yoga training could improve overall well-being in female college students. There were two parts to the study. The first part included 98 participants, who took three questionnaires measuring anxiety, depression, and subjective well-being. The measures used were, the State Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, and an original Subjective Sense of Well-being questionnaire. The experimenter wanted to see if there was a difference in perceived anxiety, depression, and health-related quality of life between males and females. There were 53 females and 45 males. In an Independent ttest, the results indicated that females differed significantly in anxiety, depression, and health-related quality of life measures. When compared to males, the females had more negative perceptions of their anxiety, depression, and well-being. In the second part of the study, eight participants, who were students at University of Central Florida, volunteered to attend eight yoga sessions, each an hour long. Since four of the participants attended only one session, the experimenter compared these (Low Attendance) to the four participants who attended all of the yoga sessions (High Attendance) over a period of four weeks (2 yoga sessions per week). Results were analyzed using a 2X2 mixed ANOV A. Results failed to demonstrate significant main effects for Pre-Post for any of the 3 dependent measures. Main effects for participation (High vs. Low) were not significant for anxiety or depression, but did reveal significantly higher subjective well-being for the High participants group. No interaction effects were significant.

Implementering av medicinsk yoga som en del i folkhälsoarbete / Implementation of medical yoga as part of public health work

Hansson, Caroline January 2015 (has links)
Abstract   Hansson, C. (2015). Implementation of medical yoga as part of public health work . Bachelor thesis in Public Health science. Department of work- and public health science. The academy of health and working life. University of Gävle, Sweden.   Introduction This paper aimed to explore and describe the implementation of medical yoga in the health promotion sector in Sweden.   Method The method was of qualitative design, and telephone interviews were conducted with people working in public health promotion that was using medical yoga in their work with patients.   Result Results indicate that the implementation of medical yoga can be described by the theory Diffusion of innovation. The informants described high observability, simplicity (low complexity) and relative advantages and few obstacles and barriers with implementation of the innovation medical yoga. The channel that promotes medical yoga and the place where the innovation are implemented are the Swedish healthcare system. The people who work there seems to be the target group of the innovation. Medical yoga is spreading through the people who are practicing medical yoga in their work.   Conclusion Conclusions are that the five stages model and the key factors of Diffusion of innovations can be part of the explanation and identifying the cause of how and why the implementation of medical yoga has been made by the informants. The innovation is appreciated by the informants and has perceived health benefits and few barriers.

Take a Deep Breath: How Yoga Postures and Breathing Techniques Can Impact PTSD Symptoms

Armington, Sophia E 01 January 2015 (has links)
Yoga postures (asana) and yoga breathing techniques (pranayama) could be an effective method of treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This study investigates the importance of the style of yoga treatment (pranayama, asana, or both) and the frequency with which these interventions are conducted (two or five times per week). The participants in this study will be military personnel with diagnosed PTSD who are currently receiving CBT and pharmaceutical treatment. All participants will have their PTSD symptoms assessed before the study begins, and then once a week each of the 12 weeks of the study. Structured interviews will be administered to both participants and loved ones of participants before and after the study in order to verify construct validity. It is proposed that all groups will show improvement in all three styles (asana, pranayama, and both) over the span of 12 weeks and the groups that practice five times a week will improve more than groups that practice twice a week. Therefore, participants who practice both pranayama and asana twice a week will have the most decrease in PTSD symptoms.
