Definites in Chinese You Existential SentencesSie, Bao-yu 07 September 2007 (has links)
This study deals with the Definiteness Effect (DE) in Chinese you existential sentences from pragmatic perspectives and the scope is confined to the formal written style with discourse environments. The data used for analysis is the United Daily News Corpus and the data selection is restricted to the definite NPs which are considered unacceptable in you existential sentences: proper names, pronouns, demonstratives, universal quantifications, most-NPs, and superlative. The data for analysis in this study consist of 119 natural occurrences and the results reveal that definite NPs can occur in you existential sentences and the contexts where they appear consist of adjunct clauses and complement clauses embedded under the matrix verb. It is also observed that you existential sentences can assert the existence of entities or events and definite NPs can represent given information. I suggest that the Definiteness Effect is a misnomer and the restriction imposed on you existential sentences is derived from the non-application of ¡§identification¡¨ in existential sentences. Definite NPs are only allowed in you existential sentences when they are used to identify the entities. If the postverbal NPs are to introduce or present the entities into the discourse, definite NPs are ruled out. In addition, it is argued that if the definite NPs are anaphoric and thus given information, they are used to draw the addressee¡¦s attention to the presence of entities or events; namely, they serve as focusing topics. It seems odd to view them only as topic-introducing constructions.

Using Social Media and Professional Learning Communities as Tools for Novice Teacher Collegiality and Improved Self-EfficacyJanuary 2013 (has links)
abstract: Teacher attrition and the migration between schools and districts can have a negative impact on quality of education and teacher performance. Novice teachers leave the profession because they are overwhelmed by the workload and responsibilities of the job. In a previous action research cycle, I found that novice teachers' perceptions of isolation and lack of opportunities to share experiences had a negative effect on teacher perceptions of efficacy. This action research project examines the effect of leveraging social media and professional learning communities to provide opportunities for a group of novice teachers to share experiences and seek advice. By addressing the challenges that novice teachers face and providing solutions for common problems, it is the hope of this researcher that highly effective teachers will remain in the classroom. The results of the study indicate that the combined use of Twitter and YouTube in collaboration with professional learning communities will improve teacher perceptions of efficacy. Teachers who participated in the social media based professional learning communities are also more likely to remain in the classroom. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ed.D. Jess's Search for an Understanding of Truth in Fred Chappell's Kirkman TetralogyBlumenstock, Alex L 01 May 2015 (has links)
In Fred Chappell’s Kirkman tetralogy, narrator Jess Kirkman synthesizes a multiplicity of perspectives for understanding the nature of truth. Blurring the distinction between art and life, Jess's narrative structure mirrors the imaginative reconstruction of experience; the novels are largely non-chronological emotive interactions with and reflections of his most salient memories and imaginings. Synthesizing an impressive cacophony of voices, Jess's stories both describe and apply the wisdom and tales Jess acquires from and with his family members. Each story informs the prior and the next, and the rhizomatic interaction between language, narrative, and reader explores Jess's numerous identities and understandings as narratives venture through space, time, and imagination.

“O, she is rich in beauty; only poor that when she dies, with beauty dies her store” : Rosaline in Shakespeare’s sixteenth-century play Romeo and Juliet and Rebecca Serle’s young adult novel When You Were Mine / “O, rik på skönhet, är hon arm däri, att, när hon dör, är hennes skatt förbi” : Rosaline i Shakespeares femtonhundratalspjäs Romeo och Julia och Rebecca Serles ungdomsroman When You Were MineRyen, Lisa January 2016 (has links)
This essay conducts a comparative analysis of the importance of the character Rosaline and the differences in her portrayal in two works: William Shakespeare’s 1590s play Romeo and Juliet and Rebecca Serle’s young adult novel When You Were Mine (2012). The essay especially looks into Rosaline’s importance for Romeo and Juliet’s relationship in the play and the novel. In relation to the play the essay also briefly discusses Franco Zeffirelli’s film adaptation Romeo and Juliet (1968) to show why it is important to keep Rosaline in the story. I argue that Shakespeare and Serle make use of the genres within which they work to tell slightly different versions of the story and Rosaline’s place in it. More specifically, I show how the literary and formal conventions of the genres affect the story by highlighting specific features, characters and events, which results in two works suited for different target audiences. In the end it is clear that Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is made for a Renaissance audience, while When You Were Mine is written for today’s young adults.

Pay-What-You-Want : Konsumentens attraktion till prisstrateginFagerlund, Axel, Huda, Annica January 2016 (has links)

Funkce "Comment clauses" "you know" a "you see" a jejich překladové ekvivalenty / The functions of comment clauses "you know" and "you see" and their Czech translation counterpartsHradecká, Markéta January 2013 (has links)
The subject of the present paper is an analysis of two formally similar comment clauses (CCs henceforth) you know and you see with the help of a parallel corpus InterCorp. First, the focus is put on their pragmatic functions; it is attempted to find out whether they perform all the functions that can be realized by you-oriented CCs as identified and characterized by Povolná (2010), i.e. whether they can be found both as appealers and empathizers, inform markers and monitors, and whether they prefer a certain sentence-position. Second, the present paper studies the Czech translation counterparts of the selected CCs; it attempts to offer a summary of the strategies concerning the translation of the CCs into Czech and to identify their most typical Czech equivalents. It also examines to what extend the type of the pragmatic function influences the translation. The theoretical part summarizes the history of the phenomenon of CCs and characterizes and describes two approaches generally applied to CCs: CCs as ordinary clause constituents (Quirk et al. (1985)) vs. CCs as discourse markers (Povolná (2010)). Also offered is the treatment of the equivalents of CCs in the Czech grammars (Cvrček et al. (2010), Daneš, Hlavsa et al. (1987) and Karlík and Grepl (1998, 1999)). The methodological part summarizes...
