Examining the Possibilities of Live, Virtual, Constructive (LVC) / Undersökning av möjlig användning av Live, Virtual, Constructive (LVC)

Thunström, Josefine January 2024 (has links)
Live, Virtual, and Constructive (LVC) is a relatively newly developed system of systems concept designed to provide a new way of conducting training for, but not exclusively, fighter pilots. “Train like you fight” is a commonly used quote when talking about LVC. The ability to create an environment where fighter pilots are able to train in an environment that is as much alike their working environment as possible will give the pilots a huge advantage when having to work in such a challenging and dangerous environment like active war. Besides training, other areas to use LVC have been discussed, and one of those areas is system test and analysis for weapon systems. In this thesis the ability to use LVC as a system test and analysis tool is investigated. This is done by the development of a model of what the LVC system looks like, then a suggestion of an LVC-design with the purpose of using the system as a test and analysis tool is presented. The design is based on SWOT-analyses based on previous research and on LVC products existing on the market. To validate this design a workshop with experts was conducted to receive input on the design as well as discuss the possibilities of Sweden implementing LVC in the future. After the workshop the LVC-design was updated with the points from the workshop.

CH'U YU'S "CHIEN-TENG HSIN-HUA": THE LITERARY TALE IN TRANSITION (CH'UAN-CH'I).

HARMON, COY LEON. January 1985 (has links)
The literary tale or ch'uan-ch'i, "transmission of the strange," evolved from the short fictional writings of the Six Dynasties and early T'ang periods and found full form as a short story in the classical language during the latter T'ang dynasty. Ch'uan-ch'i flourished through the Sung dynasty but fell into a period of relative inactivity during the Yuan dynasty. With the founding of the Ming in 1368 came renewed interest in the literary tale with the appearance of Ch'u Yu's collection of ch'uan-ch'i known as Chien-teng hsin-hua. Ch'u's tales became so popular that they soon inspired poet-official Li Ch'ang-ch'i to write the collection Chien-teng yu-hua in imitation of Ch'u's style. The two collections remained popular and influential through much of the Ming dynasty. The influence of both Ch'u Yu and Li Ch'ang-ch'i spread to Korea and Japan where many of their tales were rewritten and adapted to local settings. It was from Japanese editions of the Chien-teng hsin-hua that Ch'u Yu's contributions to the ch'uan-ch'i genre were rediscovered in this century. On comparison with earlier T'ang models, Ch'u Yu's tales show considerable similarity in style; however, the best of his tales show advancement in characterization, a broader range of subject matter, settings as varied as the tales themselves, and a level of society generally far removed from the scholar-official class commonly depicted in T'ang tales. It is in Ch'u Yu's thematic tales or tales of retribution that can be found the combination of elements that clearly illustrates his contributions to the ch'uan-ch'i genre. A reading of representative tales from both T'ang dynasty collec- tions and the large collection of literary tales by P'u Sung-ling in the Ch'ing dynasty illustrates the degree and nature of change in the literary tale over the centuries. The appearance of Ch'u Yu's Chien-teng hsin-hua in the early Ming dynasty not only revived interest in the genre but also contributed to the development of one of the most enduring forms of fiction in the history of China.

Earthbound Humors: An Ecocritical Approach to Melancholy in As You Like It and Hamlet

Brown, Angela 14 May 2010 (has links)
Ecocriticism explores the way in which artists interact with, interpret and represent the natural world. The concept of “nature,” according to ecocriticism, goes beyond simply flora and fauna, extending to human nature as well. In Shakespeare's England, a person's nature was determined by his bodily humors, so the melancholy humor particularly lends itself to an ecocritical approach because it is inextricably linked to the natural world. Transcending genre, melancholy is not limited to the green world of comedy but rather appears in tragedy as well. In As You Like It, the melancholy Jaques offers a foil for the forest teeming with sanguine lovers. In Hamlet, however, melancholy becomes a much more bleak and ambiguous quality, raising questions concerning the nature of acting and suicide. In the study of melancholy within As You Like It and Hamlet, an ecocritical perspective offers a unique insight into the way Shakespeare experiences and interacts with the natural world.

The Paternal Dilemma: Fathers, Sons and Inheritance in Shakespearean Drama

Keener, Andrew S. January 2010 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Andrew Sofer / In this thesis, it is my task to explore Shakespeare’s social analysis concerning the patriarchal structure of the family and the economic implications of this system. Four plays in particular, King Lear, Henry IV, As You Like It, and The Tempest resonate with these thematic elements. At the heart of these plays is the issue I call the paternal dilemma; the father or patriarch is a mere human, cannot live forever, and therefore needs to rely on an inheritance scheme to ensure the continuation of his line. This problem sees the institution of inheritance (namely, primogeniture) as a solution or antidote to mortality. In an investigation of these issues, I place myself in an already rich field of secondary criticism, examining how genre and family structure combine in what is ultimately a conservative understanding of the Elizabethan family. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2010. / Submitted to: Boston College. / Evaluation of technological properties of wood in open-pollinated progenies of eucalypt and its implication for sawn timber breeding program.

Santos, Paulo Eduardo Telles dos 08 May 2002 (has links)
Forty-one open pollinated progenies of Eucalyptus grandis provenance Luís Antônio-SP (ex-Atherton, Australia) were evaluated in two field trials established in an experimental area belonging to the private company Votorantim Celulose e Papel, at Altinópolis-SP. One trial was composed by 20 progenies and the other by 21 progenies, both in a completely randomized blocks design. A total of 242 trees, 299 logs and 1,200 boards were evaluated. Three discs from each tree were provided, each one corresponding to a different position (bottom, middle and top), 2.60m apart, in order to determine the basic density and the moisture content. The logs were evaluated for volume without bark, eccentricity, bark content, end splits and sapwood/heartwood proportion. The primary and secondary mechanical processing of the logs were carried out in an industrial sawmill equipped with a twin band saw and a two shafts circular saw, respectively. The boards were evaluated in green condition for warping and in green/dried (12% of moisture) condition for end splits. Wood samples from the outer boards of the logs were used to determine their physical-mechanical properties, such as: specific gravity, parallel compression, shear strength and static bending. The experimental data were submitted to statistical-genetic analysis by using the SAS ® software and, to estimate the variance components, the Restricted Maximum Likelihood Variance Components Estimation (REML) method was used. Significant differences were detected for the traits basic density, log end splitting, sapwood/heartwood proportion, bowing, specific gravity, parallel compression and static bending, which showed promising for breeding purposes, with estimates of heritability coefficients of 0.34, 0.31, 0.39, 0.39, 0.61, 0.57 and 0.50, respectively. Genetic variation was not detected for the traits moisture content, board end splitting, volume of log without bark, log eccentricity, bark content, crooking and shear strength. Estimates of genetic correlations, ranging from intermediate to high, were also observed among physical-mechanical properties and between the traits basic density and log end splitting, basic density and bowing, specific gravity and bowing, sapwood/heartwood proportion and bowing, volume of log and bowing and volume of log and log end splitting. The expected response to selection among progenies, under a selection intensity of 20%, revealed the perspective of immediate gains for the traits volume of log (0.59%), basic density (- 2.15%), log end splitting (- 7.69%) and bowing (- 2.65%), considering that for the latter three traits the selection was oriented to reduction of the means. It was also observed that a selection index composed by these four traits could give similar responses to those predicted by selecting each one of the latter three individually. In relation to technological aspects, the following findings were observed: a) the pattern of variation along the first part of the bole was of a large initial decrease followed by a small increase for basic density, and a continuous decrease for moisture content; b) the traits bark content, sapwood/heartwood proportion, bowing, log end splitting and board end splitting were very influenced by the position of sampling on the tree; c) a similar performance among the first and second logs in relation to end board splitting and crooking.
