Preocupações e incertezas de sobreviventes ao câncer na infância e na adolescência relativas à fertilidade / Concerns and uncertainties of survivors of cancer in childhood and adolescence related to fertility. 2

Fabrine Aguilar Jardim 12 August 2016 (has links)
After the end of treatment, the survivors of cancer are susceptible to a variety of symptoms, often referred to as long-term and / or late effects. Among the late effects is infertility, which, in younger survivors, may affect your quality of life. This research aimed to know the concerns and uncertainties of adolescents and young adults survivors of cancer in childhood and adolescence related to fertility. This is a descriptive and exploratory study, with qualitative data analysis. The participants were 24 adolescents and young adults, aged between 18 and 24, survivors of cancer in childhood and adolescence, followed up at a University Hospital ambulatory in the state of São Paulo. Interviews were used as data collection technique and its analysis was conducted in the perspective of the inductive thematic Content Analysis. As a complement, after the interview, the participants\' health records were used as a source of information on peculiarities of the therapeutic protocol. The empirical data supported the construction of two meaning units: \"Surviving cancer\" related to biological, social, subjective and emotional aspects, representatives for those participants who survived cancer during childhood and adolescence and experienced the process of moving to the Healed Clinic, and also related to the experience with possible late treatment effects. The second meaning unit, \"Speaking of the reproductive condition,\" illustrates empirical data aspects related to the participants\' reproductive condition. It was observed that the survivors live with the uncertainty of whether or not to be able to have children. For them, the infertility risks are often placed in the background due to the urgent desire to survive cancer, emphasizing the self-perception that the most important is to be alive. From the results of this research it is expected to provide subsidies for production of health care that could meet the real needs of this clientele that has long-term health follow-up demands

Despite the number of studies and significant advances, the obesity problem appears to not be solved effectively by the approaches that have been proposed and evidence the need to reflect about new ways to follow the obese subject, in the present study with a proposal of a relational approach. In order to that, we adopted the qualitative method of survey that was designed by a case study and it was used a semi-structured interview, Genogram and a Timeline as data collect instruments. It was interviewed an obese young adult with 27 years old, BMI of 36.1 kg/m² , that means obesity level II. The results indicated a family behavior based on rigidity and inability to deal with crisis and conflicts, beyond the presence of secrets that work for holding off and keeping way relationships. It was noted also the relationship between food and affection in this family, that as well as the overweight, represent the identity of the familiar group and give to the participant the belonging feeling. Thus, we could reflected about her loyalty and the limitation imposed by her, complicating the identification out of the family system and the constitution of an autonomous and adult identity. Understanding the histories of the individuals and their families is a facilitator strategy in the development of interventions that are connected with family beliefs and needs and can imply as an important agent of changing. In this way, the Family Therapy proved to be a relevant resource in working with obese individuals / Este trabalho teve como objetivo compreender os significados atribuídos à obesidade e família por uma jovem adulta obesa, sob a perspectiva da teoria sistêmica.

Vieira, Daniel Chaves January 2017 (has links)
OBJECTIVES: To assess the prospective associations of mood disorders, religiosity and suicidality in a community sample of young adults. METHODS: Prospective population-based cohort study. Young adults (18-24 years old) were recruited and followed-up five years later. Suicidality, mood and anxiety disorders were assessed using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Substance use disorders were assessed using the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test. Religiosity were assessed at baseline and grouped according to religious affiliation and according to attendance frequency. RESULTS: The sample included 1560 young adults at baseline, with 1244 reassessed at follow-up (80.6%). Depressive episodes, both current and past had a significant impact on suicidality. Previous manic episodes, however, were less consistently associated with suicidality. No association of religiosity with suicidality was found in the two waves of the research. This effect is maintained in all religious affiliations, even when subdivided the analysis according to the frequency of attendance in religious service. CONCLUSIONS: Depressive episodes have an independent and robust effect on prospective suicidality. The effect of manic episodes, on the other hand, was dependent on the analysis and deserves further exploration. Although there is prior general evidence suggesting a protective role of religiosity on suicidality, these were not confirmed in this specific sample of young adults.

An exploration of nature and human development in young adult historical fantasy

Chen, Jou-An January 2018 (has links)
Traditional historical writing focuses on the cause and effect of human action, assuming that it is the historian's responsibility to recount the ebbs and flows of human progress. In the process of laying hold of the past as a narrative of human action, historical writing has developed the tendency to marginalise nature and undermine its power to influence the historical narrative. My investigation explores the fantastic in historical fantasy as a means of resisting historical writing's anthropocentrism. Historical fantasy uses fantastical elements to create counterfactual and alternative historical realities that have the potential to resist and undermine history's anthropocentric norm. My thesis examines four contemporary young adult historical fantasy trilogies that reimagine key turning points in history such as industrialisation, the American frontier, European imperialism, and World War I. They share the theme of retrieving and subverting anthropocentric discourses in the history of human development and thereby creating space for nature's presence and agency. My study finds that the fantastic is an effective means of subverting historical writing's anthropocentrism. But it also uncovers ambiguities and contradictions in historical fantasy's ecological revisionism, pointing to the idea that despite the fantastic's capacity for subversion, historical representations of nature cannot be separated from considerations of human identity and survival.

A Case Study: Incorporating Young Adult Literature into General Education To Improve Intellectual and Emotional Intelligence

Irion, Katherine Ann 01 November 2018 (has links)
Institutions of higher learning have required students to take general education courses since such they were conceived and implemented in the 1940s. Requirements vary widely across institutions, but there is a broad consensus that a literature course be required in order to graduate. While these courses feature many types of literature, one literary field is overwhelmingly overlooked: young adult literature. Brigham Young University has recently implemented a young adult literature course that will fulfill a general education requirement. This case study examines the question, "What might be the rationale for including a course in young adult literature as part of the general education curriculum?" The findings of this case study suggest teaching YA literature as a GE course benefits students' emotional and intellectual intelligence. Drawing on observations, interviews, students' work, and students' reflections, analysis concludes that young adult literature has the ability to be used in a university general education class to successfully teach intellectual abilities and to impart and improve emotional intelligence.

The Art of the Process: The Creation and Production of Wrinkles in Our Clothing

Yancey, Julia Alexandra 01 May 2016 (has links)
Wrinkles in Our Clothing One night after a party Andrew realizes that he has never truly lived. Christine finds her passion somewhere she never thought she could have it. These two young adults, making their way through college, realize that now is the time to decide how they will choose to live their lives. They face the challenges that most young adults face such as societal expectations, a parent’s ideal image of their child, and having the courage to take that first step. Although these two do not meet in the lives of their characters they appear to know each other in a few places throughout the play. This is a device to reflect the common ground of those who struggle with identity. They meet in an opening sequence of the play as a device to introduce the play as their story. Their lives are each affected by the same person. A person who cares about the lives of those around her, Janet.
