e(femme)era: Materialized identity-making in South Texas-based feminist zinesJanuary 2021 (has links)
archives@tulane.edu / This thesis analyzes submission-oriented Latina/o zines based in South Texas. Each publication circulates nationally and internationally, featuring artistic submissions from this network. Through three case studies, this thesis investigates zines’ roles in forming spaces, both discursive and physical, for feminist, queer, Latina/o identity-making. The three case studies of South Texas-based zines are: St. Sucia, founded by Isabel Ann Castro and Natasha I. Hernandez in San Antonio, Texas (2014), Muchacha Fanzine, founded by Daisy Salinas in San Antonio, Texas (2012), and ChingoZine, in Austin, Texas (2012). These collaborative zines challenge the celebrated individualism of the modern artist by privileging a collective platform over the individual voice. The editors of these zines weave together submitted multimedia works—written, photographed, painted, drawn—into a curated selection that exhibits an alternative artistic network. These zines exemplify key aspects of contemporary artistic production: they are collectively authored, privilege lived experience over artistic training, and foreground alternate personal narratives. These works thus reshape the art historical narrative of U.S. contemporary art away from largely white, largely male, New York-based artists working in a succession of trends (Minimalism, Conceptual Art, Neo Geo, Appropriation, etc.). Instead, these zines foreground queer, female, artists of color whose work brings historical Latina artistic and punk subcultures in dialogue with contemporary political commitments to revising art history. As objects of study, a zine-focused approach for an art historical analysis calls attention to the alternative approaches to artmaking and understanding of art. The creators, contributors, and readers of these works hold many roles, thus the zines themselves become avenues through which to understand the social role of artmaking. Alternative Literacies, Resistance, and Spatial Representations in The Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Culture of Zine Publication in New OrleansJessee, Nathan 05 August 2010 (has links)
Zines are small circulation media that amateurs make and distribute. Inspired by both the lack of ethnographic research on the do-it-yourself (DIY) culture of zine-making in urban studies and the growing interest in ethnographically oriented research in literacy studies, rhetoric, and linguistics this research explores the people, places, and practices behind zine publication in New Orleans, Louisiana through participant observation at two specialized loci—the Iron Rail and punk shows—as well as semi-structured interviews with people who make, distribute, and consume zines. This research argues that zine-makers use zines to reinterpret urban space in search of an authentic relationship with the city. They then share these interpretations with others who participate in DIY punk culture. In doing so, zine-makers refuse conventional rules developed for classroom literacy and resist capitalism in their zines' content and in their methods of publishing by both building on local knowledge and opposing corporate media.

This project is an examination of the communication and publishing implications of producing an e-zine delivered to readers via e-mail with print-magazine style presentation, and then supporting it with a website.Several communication issues are raised, such as the potential for reaching international audiences for little or no additional effort and cost. The very structure of the publishing environment is opened to question by this style of communicating and the model preferred by the publisher is constantly open to review - particularly when the potential to direct influence of the audience on the final product is taken into account.This project has indicated some avenues for maximising the potential for this style of web publishing down a number of paths, including that of becoming a true multi-media production. At the same time it has raised many questions on the future of publishing, the internet, and the world wide web, while highlighting the relative infancy of the sector.

Interessa-nos entender os modos de subjetivaÃÃo construÃdos entre um grupo de correspondentes-zineiros que se organizavam em torno de encontros permeando a escrita das cartas com elementos de construÃÃo literÃria, afetiva e artÃstica. Tais cartas se referem aos encontros, ao sentido de pertenÃa à rede, à criaÃÃo, Ãs experiÃncias enquanto estas acontecem e podem ser lidas como um diÃrio de campo coletivo e compartilhado, construÃdo aos poucos e de forma bastante fragmentada. Previous issue date: 2012 / Resumo: O objetivo geral desta pesquisa foi observar como coletivos feministas no Brasil estão (ou não) se apropriando e usando as novas tecnologias de informação e comunicação (TICs) e como as questões sobre gênero estão circulando nesses novos meios. Principalmente no período pós Segunda Guerra Mundial escolas distintas (como a Escola de Frankfurt e a Escola de Toronto de Comunicação, entre outras) tiveram como objetivo entender o lugar das TICs na sociedade, alternando abordagens mais tecnofóbicas ou tecnofílicas. Uma das preocupações desta pesquisa foi mostrar a relação entre as teorizações sobre comunicação e mídia e os coletivos feministas, observando se as abordagens acima mencionadas se fazem (ou não) presentes nas publicações online de grupos de defesa da mulher quando estas tratam das questões de gênero. Após apresentar um panorama da relação entre as feministas brasileiras e a mídia a partir, principalmente, de periódicos (desde o século XIX até o século XXI), esta dissertação traz como corpus de análise o material produzido e publicado no formato e-zine (eletronic fanzine) pelo Grupo de Ação Feminista (GAFe), de Florianópolis (SC). Dentre os quesitos ponderados na escolha desse material estão o período de sua produção, a constante publicação de novos tópicos e o contato entre esse grupo e outros movimentos sociais. A abordagem metodológica adotada foi híbrida - análise de conteúdo e pesquisa interpretativa - e objetivou a saturação dos dados. Os resultados apontam que o coletivo promove uma profunda crítica à subordinação feminina ao aparelho genital e à perpetuação da dualidade de gênero, sendo temas como violência, aborto e direitos da mulher os mais debatidos. As considerações finais mostram que apesar do GAFe se auto identificar como um coletivo de mulheres e homens que buscam o fim da dualidade de gênero e de afirmarem que o feminismo não é o contrário do machismo, o seu material no geral apresenta uma preocupação maior com questões femininas e delegam ao homem geralmente a figura de opressor. Com relação ao seu posicionamento frente à comunicação e à mídia, tanto momentos tecnofóbicos quanto tecnofílicos são observados / Abstract: The aim of this research was to observe how feminist groups in Brazil are (or are not) taking control and using new information and communication technology (ICT) and how gender issues are moving through these new media. Mainly after the World War II different schools (as Frankfurt School and Toronto School, among others) had as their goal to understand which place the ICTs had in our society, switching more technophobic and technophilic approaches. This research was concerned about showing the relation between communication and media theories and the feminist groups, observing if the approaches mentioned before can (or cannot) be found in online publications of women defense groups when they talk about gender issues. After showing a brief view of the relation between Brazilian feminism and the media, mainly through newspapers (since the 19th century until the 21st century), this dissertation has as its corpus the material produced and published in an electronic fanzine format by Grupo de Ação Feminista (GAFe), from Florianopolis (Santa Catarina State). Among the aspects considered to choose that specific material are (a) how long its production lasted, (b) the frequency of new publications and (c) the contact the group had with other social movements. The methodological approach was hybrid - content analysis and interpretative research - and it aimed the data saturation. The results demonstrate the group has a heavy criticism about women subordination to the female reproductive system and about the gender dualism, and themes as violence, abortion and women's rights as the most debated ones. The Final Considerations show that although considering itself as a group of men and women who search for the end of the gender dualism and stating the feminism is not the opposite of sexism, the material produced by GAFe presents, in general, more debates about women's issues and men have the role of the oppressor.
