The Collaborative Pianist and Body Mapping: A Guide to Healthy Body Use for Pianists and Their Musical Partners

January 2013 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT Musicians endure injuries at an alarming rate, largely due to the misuse of their bodies. Musicians move their bodies for a living and therefore should understand how to move them in a healthy way. This paper presents Body Mapping as an injury prevention technique specifically directed toward collaborative pianists. A body map is the self-representation in one's brain that includes information on the structure, function, and size of one's body; Body Mapping is the process of refining one's body map to produce coordinated movement. In addition to preventing injury, Body Mapping provides a means to achieve greater musical artistry through the training of movement, attention, and the senses. With the main function of collaborating with one or more musical partners, a collaborative pianist will have the opportunity to share the knowledge of Body Mapping with many fellow musicians. This study demonstrates the author's credentials as a Body Mapping instructor, the current status of the field of collaborative piano, and the recommendation for increased body awareness. Information on the nature and abundance of injuries and Body Mapping concepts are also analyzed. The study culminates in a course syllabus entitled An Introduction to Collaborative Piano and Body Mapping with the objective of imparting fundamental collaborative piano skills integrated with proper body use. The author hopes to inform educators of the benefits of prioritizing health among their students and to provide a Body Mapping foundation upon which their students can build technique. / Dissertation/Thesis / D.M.A. Music 2013

Discontinuous lives : listening to the stories of South African diplomatic families in the Third World

Shaw, Aneta 03 March 2006 (has links)
Diplomats spend four years at a time abroad in South Africa's foreign missions, and after a home posting to Pretoria, typically lasting two years, they leave again. Children attend international schools. Thus diplomatic families have to adjust to a lifestyle of change and discontinuity, foreign cultures and unknown environments. The extent of this adjustment seems underrated and misunderstood. Since 1994 the number of missions abroad has doubled and most of the new missions are in the third world, hence the focus on hardship postings. In this narrative research, interviews were conducted with diplomatic families in several hardship posts. The aim was to gain a better understanding of the process of adjustment based on first hand information. Adjustment is described as a complex unfolding narrative with regressive as well as progressive story lines. The first stage lasting up to six months is seen as regressive, since the person is further removed from his goal of adjustment than at arrival. The rest of the stay is largely progressive if adjustment is seen as "being settled in a familiar routine" . Regressive elements refer to environmental restrictions. Findings include a description of an ideal couple for the foreign service; a need for effective preparation for a posting is confirmed; a changed relationship between Head Office and an official when abroad; diffuse identity among adolescents who spend formative years abroad, resulting in poorly understood adjustment problems on reentry; importance of attending to the soft issues of relocation instead of focusing on financial compensation. / Thesis (PhD (Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Psychology / unrestricted

Příběh pěstounky na přechodnou dobu: návrhy pro systémová zlepšení / The story of temporary foster care mother: proposals for system improvements

Turtáková, Petra January 2019 (has links)
This thesis is a qualitative probe into the story of a temporary foster mother. The thesis captures, analyses and classifies this story into systemic context. It does so with an emphasis on the temporary foster mother's personal experience and also with using personal experience of other participants involved in this particular case - including mine. This thesis is largely a reflection of my own role in this story, it is looking at it from different perspectives that evolve over time. The thesis is grounded in theoretical sources, especially methodologies of temporary foster care and methodological recommendations. Theoretical sources are critically viewed and connected to personal experience. The resulting storytelling, which provides an insight into the wider context of temporary foster care in the Czech Republic, was based on this procedure. Capturing systemic context is used in this thesis to create suggestions for possible systemic improvements.

Le référentiel, organisateur du dit « coaching » ? : Etude socio clinique de ses usages / Is the reference table an organizer or what is called coaching ? : A socio-clinical study of its uses

Guillemot, Valérie 02 June 2014 (has links)
Market supply over the word « coaching » is confusing for customers and partners, and for coaches themselves. With occupational didactics as a line of sight, and a socio-clinical comprehensive approach to study the case of six coaches, this research comes to the conclusion that the reference table appears to be more an indicator than an organizer of what is called « coaching ». Because coaching has not yet been conceptualized, there is no consensus on its definition, nor on a reference table, or on ways of teaching it and it lacks recognition. Using four organizers of human businesses, which are the relationships to knowledge, to norms and standards, to values, and to one's professional self, it is possible to analyse the coaches' activities and identity dynamics. The obtained results show that the use of a reference table is an indicator of the position they adopt: either in a guidance or accompanying position. Since the word « coaching » says nothing about the position adopted by the ones who refer to themselves as coaches, the denomination referring to the professional -accompanying activity in the field of human resources, and to those who undertake it, will have to evolve. Training these accompanying professionals to the contrary usages of the reference table will allow the elaboration of the profession type and the style of these accompanying professionals.

Les gestes professionnels des formateurs d'enseignants en situation d'accompagnement individualisé / The professional gestures of teachers’ tutors in individualised accompanying situations

Pana-Martin, Francine 13 April 2015 (has links)
This research is about the professional gestures of tutors accompanying newly appointed teachers. In the interview that follows the observation of a class, which we based our study on, the tutor’s activity is analysed through the lens of professional gestures, mobilised in their operating and symbolic dimensions, and enriched by the notion of professional amplitude. This last one supposes that the professional gesture does not have an axiological dimension in itself, but that it strongly depends on the accompanying relation built between the two partners of the interview. In the continuity of works concerning professional gestures, Jorro (1998, 2002, 2006, 2011), Alin (2006, 2010) and Bucheton (2008, 2009), this thesis studies the professional gestures of the tutor during the interview post class observation and makes possible a reading of a situated professional acting. The professional gesture, seen as a body movement towards the other, is redefined as a verbal and/or corporeal interaction, intended and conscientised by the tutor, of variable amplitude. The results allow us to highlight seven professional gestures from the tutors.
