An exploration of the lived experiences of women accompanying their migrant spouses in South AfricaKadzomba, Sarah 05 1900 (has links)
Text in English / Early migration across borders predominantly involved movement by males for work. While changing times have seen a considerable increase in the number of female migrants as principal migrants solely for independent employment, women still move as passive participants, who have to play an often obscure supporting role beside men. Through a qualitative, exploratory research design, this thesis explored the lived experiences of accompanying immigrants, particularly women from other African countries, accompanying their immigrant spouses in South Africa. Data collection was conducted through individual face-to-face unstructured in-depth interviews with eight female accompanying spouses. The data were thematically analysed and yielded seven overarching themes, namely: motivation to relocate and power dynamics; effects of migration; how accompanying immigrant status is experienced by the female accompanying spouse; challenges immigrants that hold accompanying spouse status face; meaning-making, adaptation; and strategies deployed to cope. These were discussed in terms of the construction of the ‘accompanying spouse status’ and how this powerful social discourse impacts women’s wellbeing. Participants reported education, socioeconomic factors and related life aspects were amongst the motivations for their relocation to South Africa, in addition to citing both positive and negative effects of their migration. From the study results, accompanying spouses recounted how they encountered various adversities, including how accompanying spouse status fundamentally reduces the holder to a dependent, whose being revolves around the principal migrant spouse. Notwithstanding participants’ struggles, the study results show how the participants have, through it all, learnt to live with their status, deployed methods of coping against all odds, and today still stand. / Psychology / Ph. The French Expatriate Assignment: Helping Accompanying Spouses to Adapt by Assuming the Role of AnthropologistWilliams, Angela Marsha 17 November 2004 (has links) (PDF)
A common practice of multinational companies is to temporarily transfer employees to international locations in order to exchange technology, launch new ventures, and facilitate communication within the company. To do this, multinational companies must make a number of decisions regarding their expatriate programs. Even though international companies would rather stay focused on the professional performance of their employees without having to "meddle" in personal and family affairs, recent research has shown that the adaptation of the accompanying spouse is one of the most critical factors in expatriate assignment success or failure. By studying the available literature on expatriate spouse adaptation, coupled with conducting my own exploratory research with American expatriate spouses currently living in France, I was led to the conclusion that adequate, pre-departure preparation is indispensable to an expatriate spouse's successful cross-cultural adaptation. To improve the efficacy of pre-departure training, I propose providing expatriate spouses with personal trainers who will teach them to adopt a new mindset for the purpose of conducting cultural analysis. This mindset involves assuming the role of anthropologist—just as an actor would assume a role in a play. The benefits of this approach are twofold: firstly, imagining oneself as an anthropologist provides excellent motivation to get out and explore a new culture rather than avoiding it and hiding out in the safe haven of one's own home; secondly, having a new, temporary identity will help create the emotional distance necessary to minimize reactionary, negative feelings and allow for progressive, cross-cultural understanding. While being sensitive to prospective expatriate spouses' personal goals, personal trainers should provide concrete methods to help mitigate culture shock's related stresses, as well as helping expatriate spouses develop appropriate coping skills to assist them in dealing with the unsettling experience of living in another culture. By implementing improvements in relocation programs, such as the solution I propose, multinational companies can maintain an acceptable return on investment for their relocation programs while affording expatriate employees and their respective families an enriching and life-changing intercultural experience.

Burn injuries lead to major complications and consequences that affect the entire lives of those who are injured. Therefore, the healing process for survivors can be long, complex, and particularly challenging. In this sense, peer support seems to constitute a significant source of help for burn victims and positively participate in several key stages of the healing process. At the Burn Unit of the Université de Montréal Hospital Center, these peers are called "patient resource companions" who are trained and are brought in to meet with patients who have recently experienced a burn injury to answer their questions and share with them the different experiential knowledges they have gained through their experience as survivors. The purpose of this study is to explore the perceptions of patient resource companions on their roles with patients suffering from severe burns. This study was conducted using a qualitative design inspired by the grounded theory methodology proposed by Corbin and Strauss (2015). Following the formation of a theoretical sample, two group interviews were conducted with patient resource companions (n=ti and n=7) working with patients at the Burn Unit of the Université de Montréal Hospital Center. Data analysis was also conducted following some of the different stages of the methodology proposed by Corbin and Strauss (2015). The exploration of the perception of patient resource companions at the Burn Unit regarding their role in the care unit contributes to the documentation and integration of a new dimension in the general framework of reference, of one of the co-supervisor’s research program on patient resource companions. In addition, the results of this study make it possible to specify several issues experienced by burn victims, providing relevant elements of reflection as to the way in which they experience the different stages of their care trajectory and the difficulties that some of these steps can entail in the healing process of survivors. All themes related to the perception that patient resource companions have of their role, makes it possible to grasp the plurality of issues to be considered and the diversity of elements to be integrated into the reflections aimed at tending towards an improvement of existing patient resource support intervention programs or in the development of future ones.

Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen that can cause severe illness in high-risk groups such as the immunocompromised and the elderly, who face a mortality rate of 20 to 30% with exposure to this deadly bacterium. Pork products have been incriminated on several occasions in listeriosis outbreaks. Contamination of ready-to-eat products is of particular importance since this kind of food is consumed without prior cooking. The pathogen's psychrophilic nature and its ability to form biofilms enable its establishment and persistence in food production environments. The bacterium can then be transferred from environmental niches to the food products. This cross-contamination is inherent to the prior introduction of L. monocytogenes into the ready-to-eat processing environment. It has been reported that raw meat cuts from the upstream processing stages constitute the main route of entry of L. monocytogenes into the ready-to-eat processing environment. The accompanying microbiota has been proposed as a factor that can influence the presence and persistence of L. monocytogenes. In processing environments, biofilms are composed of several microorganisms whose identity and interactions shape the development of microbial communities. Thus, the aim of the present thesis was to identify bacterial determinants, present in the microbiota of surfaces in contact with meat products in the cutting room of a pig slaughterhouse, associated with the presence or absence of L. monocytogenes. The characterization of the surface’s microbiota and the detection of L. monocytogenes were carried out in parallel on the surface samples collected. Diversity analyses carried out following 16S rRNA sequencing revealed heterogeneity in the distribution of bacterial genera on these surfaces, depending on the production line and the visit. The presence of microbial determinants enabled the development of two predictive models based on random forests classification algorithms, which, based on the microbiota of a sample, predicted its belonging to a visit (at 94%) and to a production line (at 88%). L. monocytogenes was found in 12,24% of the cutting room surfaces samples. A non-stochastic distribution of the isolates was observed (only three of the six production lines were contaminated) suggesting a preferential localization of L. monocytogenes in the cutting room. Isolates characterization revealed low genetic diversity and the presence of several genes associated with adaptation to the production environment and attenuation of virulence. Using the MaAsLin statistical tool, the Veillonella taxon was identified as a bacterial determinant of the presence of L. monocytogenes on the cutting room surfaces. Using a cultural approach, it was demonstrated that Veillonella dispar and Veillonella atypica significantly increased the growth and survival rates of L. monocytogenes in planktonic cocultures and biofilms. The results suggested that the action of Veillonella is mediated by compounds secreted or made available by the bacterium. The results of the present study contribute to a better understanding of L. monocytogenes contamination patterns in swine slaughterhouses.

Pain : psychological measurement and treatmentMokhuane, Esther Margaret Queenie 11 1900 (has links)
This research was executed as three separate studies. Study 1 focused on the perception of pain and the semantic aspects of pain. Study 2 focused on the measurement of acute pain and mood states. Study 3 focused on the psychological treatment of cancer pain. In Study 1 a group of 66 Setswana-speaking adults were
required to describe what they saw, what happened, and what would be the outcome with respect to three visually presented pain scenes using The Pain Apperception Test (PAT) A qualitative analysis of their responses shows that pain is experienced as an all encompassing experience affecting all aspects of their lives, such as the physical, emotional, social, and economic. This was found to be true, irrespective of gender and age with the exception of economic issues. A qualitative analysis of their responses to the Pain Eliciting Incidents Questionnaire (PEIQ) reveals that the Setswana pain descriptors are classifiable according to the three dimensions of pain namely, the sensory-discriminative, affective-motivational, and cognitive-evaluative.
Sludy 2 applied the Profile of Mood States (POMS) preoperatively to a group of 58 female laparotomy
(gynaecological) patients. These patients were also tested post-operatively with the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the Wisconsin Brief Pain Questionnaire (WBPQ) as pain measures. The pain measures were taken at no medication and at the peak of medication. Factor analysis could not confirm the validity of the six POMS scales. These scales also did not show correlations with post-operative pain. Correlations between the pain measures showed acceptable reliability and validity of the VAS and the WBPQ. In Study 3 three groups of 15 cancer patients each, suffering from chronic pain, were treated over a period of two weeks with either cognitive behavioural therapy plus medication, reassurance therapy plus medication, or medication only. Comparison of before and after treatment pain measures showed that both cognitive behavioural therapy and reassurance therapy had a beneficial effect. Follow-up results three months later showed that the beneficial effect
of reassurance therapy did not persist. Patients treated with cognitive behavioral therapy still showed the
beneficial effects thereof. / Psychology / D. Litt. et Phil. (Psychology)
