Don't Listen to Me, I'm Just Your Partner

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: "Play less and listen more" is the prevailing wisdom whenever two musical partners are having ensemble issues that interfere with their music-making. Accompanists, coaches, and collaborative pianists across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries devote many pages to these situations and explain what to listen and look for. An overview of this literature establishes a standard canon of ensemble issues for collaborative pianists working with a single partner, whether vocal or instrumental. The overview also discusses the various solutions these authors recommend for these problems. However, in exceptional moments of rehearsal or performance, the foregoing advice fails. After comparing several passing observations in these standard works with the author's own experience, a paradoxical situation becomes evident: at times, what works instead of listening more is listening less. As the author describes through multiple musical examples and commentaries, ignoring one's partner for a brief moment can benefit the duo's ensemble and artistry. The application of this principle is both narrow and wide-ranging and is meant to serve as a secondary course of action. It is decidedly not a replacement for the standard advice on coaching and collaborating, for such advice is successful far more often than not. However, it can be utilized when the collaborative pianist deems it the most successful and prudent solution to an ensemble situation that has remained problematic. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2015

Collaborative Crossover: Identifying Classical Vocal Collaborative Piano Practices in Jazz Vocal Accompanying

Morgenroth, David Jonathan 08 1900 (has links)
Classical vocal collaborative piano and jazz vocal accompaniment are well-established fields with long-standing performance traditions. Classical collaborative performance practices have been researched and codified, but jazz accompanying practices largely remain in the domain of aural tradition. Both classical and jazz accompaniment share associated practices, such as rubato, transposition, and attention to lyric diction and inflection, but there is little previous investigation into the idea that classical collaborative practices might apply to jazz accompanying. This research examines jazz piano accompanying practices in sung verses of standard tunes to demonstrate how accomplished jazz pianists intuitively use many of the same techniques as classical collaborative pianists to create balance with singers. Through application of expressive microtiming analysis to graphical displays of transcribed recorded performances, a strong correlation is established between the classical and jazz vocal accompanying traditions. Linking classical practices to jazz potentially creates a foundation for jazz accompanying pedagogy.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Lecticia Maria Zambrano de Araujo Raposo.pdf: 1081160 bytes, checksum: b9da787202973f9f41296ba6913198ad (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-09-12 / The growth of feminine access to high end positions in the corporate world is a global phenomenon which enables women to reach promotions and expatriation opportunities as well as the traditional group of men in corporate jobs. This dissertation´s goal is to know and understand the experience of men´s lives as an accompanying life partner during the expatriation of their wives, attempting to comprehend the differences in experiences. It is a qualitative study which used the life-story method to investigate the lives of three childless men in their thirties who interrupted their careers in order to follow their wives in a new country. Results confirm and broaden previous research papers helping us better understand the connections of themes such as expatriation, double career marriages and gender studies. Personal traits and shared decisions were aspects seen to favor adaptation in foreign countries. Double-career marriages seem to be unique and express a specific manner of functioning through flexible deals and more creative solutions when searching for solutions to achieve mutual satisfaction. The challenges of masculinity, considering the men are temporarily out of work, seemed to be work related and brought forth by the need to internally negotiate and to negotiate with the outside world the prerogatives of belonging to a hegemonic group. This conflict is shown in the desire to keep an active career and to keep investing time and energy in a career. Results show clearly that there is felt pressure into keeping the cultural and personal concepts of masculinity, maintenance of power and the existence of social mechanisms of correction of deviated behavior / O crescente acesso feminino a postos de maior destaque e visibilidade no mundo corporativo é um fenômeno global, possibilitando também às mulheres oportunidades de expatriação assim como ao grupo tradicional de executivos homens.

Three Arias From Mozart’s Don Giovanni: a Comparative Analysis of Performance Issues and Technical Problems Found in Four Complete Piano-Vocal Scores. A Vocal Accompanist’s Perspective

Fateeva, Anna A 01 May 2011 (has links)
The objective of this essay is to study technical problems and performance issues in the piano-reduction accompaniments of three solo arias from Mozart’s Don Giovanni: “Or sai chi l’onore,” “Dalla sua pace la mia dipende,” and “Batti, batti, o bel Masetto.” This study is executed through the comparative analysis of the arias’ accompaniments from four piano-vocal score editions of the opera (Bärenreiter, G. Schirmer, Ricordi, and Boosey & Hawkes) with cross-reference to the full orchestral score (the Neue Mozart-Ausgabe). The essay contains a detailed presentation of the merits and flaws of each of the four piano-vocal score editions; a discussion of the realizations’ quality; examples by the author of plausible modifications; and the author’s suggestions for practice, fingering, pedaling, and dealing with various performance issues. This essay can provide a stimulus for vocal pianists to explore the countless possibilities in piano realizations of the orchestral accompaniments of operatic works, and to continue to refine and improve their ability to imitate orchestral sonorities and textures at the piano.

Jonsson, Camilla, Måhl, Kajsa January 2015 (has links)
This study aims to look at Swedish police officers learning in specific situations, where their handling of conflicts represents our main example. The police department and its work is based on a combination of laws and political deeds. In addition to this the individual police officer has to adapt and form an attitude towards official deeds of conduct. The study relies on six interviews with police officers whose positions varied. By using theories regarding socialisation processes, accompanying discourse and the hermeneutic spiral/circle our analysis shows that the education can be seen as problematic in regards to their focus on theoretical and non-practical education. The respondents regard policing as a vocational training, and it is therefore hard to combine the theoretical training when in practical work.

Analysing the mental activity of educational advisors in individual accompanying situations : a retrospective interview approach

Boucenna, Sephora 26 April 2014 (has links)
In today's world where the speed of social transformation seems to be ever increasing, the educational field is constantly called upon to come up with new ways to meet the new needs that arise. One of its answers has been nothing less than the creation of new professions such as educational counselling, where personal accompanying seems to hold a privileged position. The goal of this research project is to develop an understanding of the activity of accompanying through the prism of the mental processes of educational advisors in accompanying situations, specifically those advisors working in the field of basic education in the French-speaking part of Belgium.A constructivist approach, characterized by the activity paradigm in its materialist sense, coupled with a qualitative approach have led to the creation of an analytical tool - that of mental acts - whose function is to grasp mental activity in its processual dimension. Alongside a tool obtained by operationalizing John Dewey's work on inquiry, this tool aims to understand mental processes at the crossroads of four components: a) linking operations between subject representations, b) the mobilizing intentions of these linking operations, c) the communication format of the subject with himself, and finally d) the temporal construction of his activity. The main results fall into three categories: 1) methodological results culminating the in creation of a data gathering tool (the retrospective interview), a tool for the analysis of mental processes (mentioned above), and the operationalization of John Dewey's notion of inquiry as a tool for analysing investigative activity; 2) results relating to the mental processes of educational advisors in accompanying situations along with the identification of the specific configuration of mental acts that accompany certain actions undertaken by the advisors; 3) results in the form of pedagogical advice that follows from a shift in posture from that of researcher to that of trainer, one that allows for the identification of uncertainty management, structurally established by the educational advisors, as the guiding principle of their accompanying activity.
