Late adolescents' parental, peer, and romantic attachments as they relate to affect regulation and risky behaviors.

Ingle, Sarah J. 08 1900 (has links)
The current study examined the relationships among attachment styles to parent, peer, and romantic partner, ability to regulate emotion, as well as engagement in sexual behaviors and substance use. Attachment theory and previous research suggests that an individual learns how to manage emotions through the modeling of appropriate techniques and a stable sense of self-worth. These two aspects develop through a secure attachment bond with an important figure. When an individual does not have a secure attachment bond in which to practice adaptive affect regulation strategies, he/she may attempt to manage emotions through external means, such as sexual behaviors or substance use. Overall, results supported these associations, with some notable exceptions. Across attachment sources a secure attachment style was related to lower levels of psychological distress and less engagement in substance use. In contrast to the findings from earlier studies, affect regulation did not mediate the relationship between attachment and substance use, and engagement in sexual behaviors was not significantly related to either attachment style or affect regulation.

Social learning and stage development applied to resistance to treatment: Probation youth in a residential treatment facility

Bankowski, Linda Joy 01 January 2003 (has links)
The present study focused on male incarcerated youth, ages ranging from twelve to eighteen, in a twenty-four hour care treatment facility. The study attempted to determine what historical factors such as types of crimes committed, length of criminal history, and gang involvement are behavioral indicators of the type of youth who resist treatment. For the study, run away behavior indicated the youth was resistant to treatment.

Goldsztein, Sasha 21 October 2010 (has links)

Music preferences, music and non-music media use, and leisure involvement of Hong Kong adolescents.

Hui, Viny Wan-Fong 12 1900 (has links)
The study sought to determine the relationships of preference responses to grade, gender, familiarity, musical training, peers'/parents' listening habits, music media use, and listening contexts. Grade six through nine Hong Kong students (N = 310) completed the audio preference test followed by verbal responses to training, peers'/parents' preferences, leisure/music media involvement, and listening context. Results indicated: The preferred genres, in descending order, were Western pop/rock, Cantopop/rock, Western classical; the disliked genres were jazz, Chinese, and non- Western/non-Chinese. Preference correlated strongly with genre familiarity. Pop genres were the most familiar to all adolescents. The students' preference toward Western pop/rock and Cantopop/rock associated with several listening contexts: solitary listening, having great freedom to choose one's desired music for listening, listening to music in one's room, and listening to music as background activity. The adolescents expressed that their leisure activities were spent with their family and friends. However, they made it clear that music listening was a personal activity that very likely was listened to alone. On all listening occasions, the girls exhibited a more positive response than the boys did. With four to five hours daily leisure time, the adolescents watched TV for three to four hours while spending less than two hours on listening to recorded music, and less than an hour on listening to radio music, MTV/karaoke, and music websites. Cantopop/rock was the most pursued music style in terms of the records bought, concerts attended outside of school, their peers', and parents' most-listened-to music. Some weak correlations of preference with grade and gender were identified: the grade six students showed more tolerance to Chinese and non-Western/non-Chinese music. Boys preferred jazz more than the girls did. Private music study and extracurricular musical experiences related to Western classical and non-Western/non-Chinese music preferences whereas school music training failed to show any association with students' musical preference.

Adolessente seuns se houding ten opsigte van seksuele losbandigheid : 'n sosio- opvoedkundige perspektief / Adolescent boys’ attitudes towards sexual licentiousness : a socio educational perspective

Nelson, Thalita 09 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans, abstracts in English and Afrikaans / Adolescent behaviour is characterised as a cognitive, social and personality developing phase. Hormones can have a big influence on the cognitive and social developing of an adolescent boy. Adolescent boy’s behaviour can influence their attitudes towards developing of values. Moral values develop during adolescence. Limitations in the developing of cognitive skills in adolescent boys can lead to immoral experimenting. Attitudes of anxiety and a low self confidence can develop. Licentiousness is when a person acts outside the norm of moral values of an environment. Sexual licentiousness is behaviour that is unacceptable in social norms of the environment. Moral values are behaviour that is acceptable in a social environment. An Adolescent with a larcenous lifestyle does not have any moral values. The descriptive research method is used for the problem statement and to enquire into the objectives of the research. The Social Development Theory possesses to the enormous power to elevate and accelerate the expansion and development of human capabilities in any field. Social development organises human energies and activities at higher levels to achieve greater results. Development increases the utilisation of human potential. The question that is being asked is: Which factors influence adolescent boys’ attitudes towards sexual licentiousness and which socio educational situations can decrease the complex problem. The adolescent, however, still experiences problems in making the appropriate decisions in life. Decisions that may have far reaching implications for their future. Morele waardes ontwikkel tydens adolessensie. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Sosio-Opvoedkunde)

Adolescent Males' Similarity, Emotional Safety, and Change in Strengths-Based Programming

Viola, Wendy Elaine 01 January 2012 (has links)
In recent decades, the use of strengths-based approaches has become increasingly popular in youth intervention and prevention programs (Maton et al., 2004), which emphasize creating emotionally safe environments through the process of relational community building (Maton, 2000). However, relatively little is known about the relationship between group composition, specifically similarity between group members, and emotional safety and program efficacy. This thesis examines the relationship between adolescent males' similarity to their peers in terms of their demographic profiles and behaviors and belief systems, experiences of emotional safety, and changing behaviors and belief systems in a strengths-based intervention program within Ohio juvenile correctional facilities. Results indicate that in the cases of education-related self-efficacy and the benefits associated with criminal activity, participants significantly changed in the direction opposite of the program's intentions. However, these negative changes were attenuated by differences between participants and their peers in the program. Theoretical implications and potential explanations are discussed.
