Trazendo à baila a voz que fomenta pesquisas em linguagem: uma análise crítica do discurso do professor-orientador através do Sistema de Transitividade / Bringing up the voice that fosters research in language: a critical discourse analysis of the adviser through the system of transitivity

Silvia Adélia Henrique Guimarães 14 December 2011 (has links)
The New Law of Directives and Bases of Brazilian Education (LDB 9.394/96) forecasts that higher education promotes critical, reflectivity, correlation of knowledge, but also the incentive to "research work and scientific research aiming the development of science and technology and the creation and dissemination of culture and, thus, to develop the understanding of man and the environment in which they live."(Article 43, paragraph III). However, little is heard about these issues from the voice of the adviser of academic research, what this adviser believes a social order problem is, in view of the importance of these social actors to academia. The few studies that address the theme are limited to identify the adviser from empirical impressions of the mentees and reflect the actions from political and educational issues (ARROW, 2003; Mazzilli, 2003; Bianchetti & MACHADO, 2006). In this sense, this paper attempts to answer through the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), what the advisers have to say about their social practice. Interpretive in nature (Alves-Mazzotti, 1999), this research counts with data generated by advisers of master in Linguistics/Applied Linguistics, representatives of federal, state and private spheres of Rio de Janeiro, featuring two participants from each sphere. In the first stage, the subjects responded to a semi-structured interview. The second step consists of: a) a questionnaire, b) electronic mail; c) the regiments of the postgraduation programs, and d) historical review of advising in Brazil. The social character of this study is the dialectical relationship between language and society, as the CDA considers any discursive event as a text (first dimension), a discursive practice (second dimension) and a social practice (third dimension): the three-dimensional model (Fairclough, 2001). The transit system of LSF guided the analysis of the first dimension, confirming other studies on the ranking of the process recurrence (LIMA LOPES, 2001). The interpretation of this first dimension indicates that advisers act on idiosyncrasy, and that the main social actors of this act are adviser and mentees, in asymmetrical relationship power. In the second dimension, the interdiscursivity reinforces this idiosyncrasy, but includes the institutional pressures, which act as regulators of this act. In the third dimension, the results suggest that historical aspects justify the decline in the quality of the masters, associated to a political interest, and the characteristics of post-modernity to a new and hybrid performance. Moreover, the results point to a discourse of resistance against hegemony in the three dimensions of analysis. The survey also allowed discussions on practical aspects: a) the reflection of the subjects about their roles and responsibilities and b) update the theoretical, applied to a topic less explored. This work is an invitation to further research on the adviser discourse, bringing out not only his/her voice, as a literal speech of one of the interviewers, but also direct and significant contributions to studies in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics in Brazil

Health Professions Advisors: Perceptions of the Health Professions Advising Community Regarding Factors Important to the Selection of Students for Medical School.

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: This study determined if differences exist among the health professions advising community between factors (academic and non-academic) used as selection criteria in medical school admissions, as well as the impact of the holistic review in admissions on new admissions initiatives with respect to personal and professional backgrounds of advisors. The study examined the differences based on the gender, race and ethnicity, age, years of advising experience, institution size and type, classification and region of the population. Statistical analyses were conducted using comparison of means tests: one-sample t-tests and one-way ANOVA to determine the significance of differences for each of the variables. Significant differences were found to exist among the health professions advising community based on gender, race and ethnicity, institution type, classification of appointment, institution size and type. The findings of the study suggested that the personal and professional background of a health professions advisor did impact the perception of importance among the academic and non-academic factors used in the selection of medical students. The medical school admissions community should appreciate the unique viewpoints of the broader health professions advising community when building relationships and finding opportunities to collaborate. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ed.D. thermoEⁱⁿᵗ: E-Assessments for International Students in Mechanical Engineering: Using Technical Thermodynamics as Pilot for Mathematics Oriented Subjects at the TU Dresden

Grau Turuelo, Constantino, Banos García, Oscar, Breitkopf, Cornelia 31 March 2021 (has links)
In recent years, the development of e-learning content has proved to be a very practical tool for improving existing learning options for students and workers, as e-learning can be used anytime and anywhere. At the universities, this versatility simplifies the process of reaching a larger number of students, especially those who have difficulties understanding the lecture. This is especially true in the case of foreign students, as language is an important barrier to overcome in early stages of the study. In order to improve the integration and success of foreign students at the Technical University of Dresden, the project thermoEⁱⁿᵗ (thermodynamic e-assessments for international students) aims to offer online electronic exercises in English for the fundamental subject of technical thermodynamics as a prototype for other subjects of natural sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM, in German: MINT). This contribution presents our methodology for establishing a comprehensive didactic relation of e-assessments coupled with the lecture content. The implementation of a dynamic system for a continuous year-to-year improvement through the e-learning content and the student feedback is also discussed together with the outcomes of such implementation as a starting point to the successful implementation of e-learning activities in the STEM field of study. L'AUTONOMIA NELL'APPRENDIMENTO DELLE LINGUE. UN'INDAGINE SULL'ITALIANO L2 IN CONTESTO UNIVERSITARIO

LO PRESTI, MARIA VITTORIA 17 December 2020 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to investigate the development of autonomy in language learning at university. The work consists of two parts. The first deals with the concept of learning autonomy from a theoretical, historical and methodological point of view. After a review of the main reference models and an excursus on how the same subject has been addressed in the documents and projects of the Council of Europe, the study focuses on the function and organization of self-access learning centers, on the transformation they are undergoing from physical spaces to virtual environments and on the role of language advisors. The second part of the work concerns two case studies, carried out at the Centro per l’Autoapprendimento (CAP) of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, with international students of Italian L2. The first case study examines how the students make use of the Center and of the language advising activities. The second describes a didactic experiment on the collaboration between language advisor and language teacher, aimed at bringing a selected group of international students closer to autonomous learning of Italian. The results of the two case studies are analysed and commented to reflect on the activities of the CAP in order to improve them and to propose good teaching practices useful for the development of autonomy in Italian L2 learning.

The Effect Of Peer Advisors On Esl Students' Perspectives Of University Academic Tasks

Fishkin, Monica 01 January 2004 (has links)
A review of the related literature revealed that international students face specific academic challenges. The goal of this research was to investigate the effect of international student peer advising sessions on English as a Second Language (ESL) international students' perceptions of their language skills and strategies for dealing with academic tasks. The research design included a control and an experimental group with a pretest and a posttest administration of the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) and the Xu International Student Academic Language Needs Assessment (ISALNA-2) instruments. Qualitative data was also collected. The participants in the study were upper-intermediate level international students in an intensive English program at a large metropolitan university. Scores (n = 23) on the SILL and the ISALNA-2 were used to investigate the changing perspectives of students receiving similar information from different sources, classroom teachers and peer advisors or only classroom teachers. Peer advising sessions were provided to the experimental group of students. The focus of the sessions was advice and direction in language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) for university academic tasks. A split-plot analysis of variance was employed to analyze the quantitative data obtained from pre- and posttest administrations of the instruments. Analysis of the data did not reveal a statistically significant effect of the peer advising sessions as regards the improvement of scores on the SILL and ISALNA-2. Qualitative data (n = 29) indicated that the experimental participants were positively impacted in understanding the necessary language skills necessary for academic success. Interviews with the peer advisors revealed that they had enhanced their understanding of university expectations and had developed a higher level of confidence as a result of their participation in the advising sessions. Qualitative data revealed positive attitudes by the peer advisors in giving language skills information and by the ESL international students involved in receiving that information. The study format could contribute to future studies and may have implications for the development of international peer advising for English language instruction, foreign student orientation programs, host family programs, and programs linking foreign students with American student study partners.
