Understanding Our Students: A Content Analysis of Nontraditional Students’ Admissions Essays for A College of Continuing and Professional Studies

While the number of individuals in the United States between the ages of 25-44 with a bachelor’s degree has been increasing, so too has the number of individuals who have started college and dropped out. Higher education has numerous societal and individual benefits that are not being actualized because there are simply not enough individuals with bachelor’s degrees in this country. Nontraditional students (NTS) are entering higher education at increasing rates but at higher risk for drop-out; therefore, it is essential to learn more about this population to improve their rates of persistence. This study examines the life experiences of 35 NTS accepted to a bachelor’s degree program in a college of continuing education. This is a bounded case study of a specific group of students that utilized a content analysis of their application essays to understand their sentiments when (re)entering higher education. Themes stemming from the research questions, essay prompt, and theoretical lens were explored but allowed for others to emerge as well. Applicants shared many personal life experiences that contributed to their goals and motivations for achieving a bachelor's degree. Ambitions for earning a bachelor’s degree were spread across the personal and professional realms, including both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. Most applicants had previously attended college prior to applying to CCE while two were applying to college for the first time. Twenty-one of the 35 applicants demonstrated a clear progression to self-authorship. This study has numerous implications for practice for admissions and various student support departments on campus. Through the collaboration of these offices, institutions can create a continuity of care surrounding these students and champion them to a degree. / Educational Administration

A Status Study of the Counseling Services Programs in the University of Kentucky Community College System

The study involved analyzing the counseling services programs in the University of Kentucky Community College System. In addition to this, the study analyzed the academic and professional background of the counselors, determined the present duties and responsibilities of the counselors, and determined the counselors’ perceived ideal duties and responsibilities. The reason for the study was to provide information which can be helpful to different groups concerned with community colleges. Some of the information may be useful to graduate programs concerned with the preparation of counselors who intend to work in community college counseling as a profession, may find that some of this information helps them understand better the general qualifications and role of the counselor. Counselors in the University of Kentucky Community College System may review the data presented and decide that some changes need to be implemented in their counseling services program to better meet the needs of their students.

The objective of this research was to determine whether orientation meetings with instructions on behavior analysis and behavioral repertoire planning Pro Knowing, could contribute to a parent whose child has below-average academic performance, should plan strategies that would help the child improve the behavior of study. We conducted a case study with the parent of a student of 13 years, enrolled in the 8th year of a private school in Cuiabá-MT. Initially was done an interview with the father, he replied to a questionnaire, two teachers filled out an evaluation of the student's behavior and the last test was used for school performance. Then the meetings were held with the father, and later repeated the initial procedures. After the proposed intervention, notice a few changes in parenting practices, the amount of notes on the agenda, as well as the assessment that teachers make about the student's behavior, but the same amount of grades remain below average / Estudos vêm apontando o envolvimento parental e a falta de contingências adequadas a um repertório comportamental Pró Saber como variáveis relevantes em quadros de baixo rendimento escolar, destacando a importância da orientação dos pais no manejo dessas contingências. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi verificar se encontros de orientação, com instruções sobre análise do comportamento e planejamento de repertório comportamental Pró Saber, poderiam colaborar para que um pai, cujo filho que apresenta rendimento escolar abaixo da média, planejasse estratégias que auxiliassem o filho a aprimorar o comportamento de estudar. Foi realizado um estudo de caso com o pai de um aluno de 13 anos, matriculado no 8º ano de uma escola particular de Cuiabá-MT. Inicialmente foi realizada uma entrevista com o pai, este respondeu a um questionário, dois professores preencheram uma avaliação do comportamento do aluno e neste último foi aplicado o teste de desempenho escolar. Em seguida foram realizados os encontros com o pai e, posteriormente, repetidos os procedimentos iniciais. Após a intervenção proposta, notam-se algumas mudanças nas práticas parentais, na quantidade de anotações na agenda, bem como na avaliação que os professores fazem sobre o comportamento do aluno, mas a mesma quantidade de notas abaixo da média permanece

Tomou como lócus a Universidade Federal do Amazonas, mais especificamente, para os dados empíricos, o Campus de Humaitá. Na perspectiva para essa compreensão foi desenvolvida uma investigação qualitativa, ouvindo, através de narrativas, quatro docentes de áreas distintas, que atenderam aos critérios definidos pelo estudo, na condição de iniciantes na carreira universitária, com não mais de cinco anos de experiência nesse nível de ensino. Essa escolha possibilitou melhor configurar a abrangência do objeto de estudo. Para a interpretação dos dados foram utilizados os princípios da Análise de Conteúdo. Os aportes teóricos tiveram como base principal os estudos de Cunha; Pimenta e Anastasiou; Veiga; Nóvoa; Marcelo Garcia; Vaillant; Mayor Ruiz; Larrosa e Lucarelli, entre outras contribuições que fundamentaram os temas centrais. Na perspectiva de alcançar o objetivo proposto, algumas questões foram norteadoras, em especial as relacionadas aos percursos de formação dos professores; estímulos que tiveram para a escolha profissional e influências de sua condição de estudantes, a partir das aprendizagens feitas com seus ex-professores, bem como compreender o impacto da formação acadêmica na sua profissionalidade. Procuramos, também, desvendar se receberam apoio institucional para essa fase de inserção e que importância atribuem a um possível movimento nessa direção. Ampliando ainda mais os estudos, provocamos as narrativas sobre as principais experiências que marcaram a trajetória inicial da docência e o que significaram para as suas práticas cotidianas. Interessou, também, ao estudo, compreender o valor que atribuem à didática universitária e como as estratégias de formação e de desenvolvimento profissional podem ser mobilizadas para fortalecer a docência. Os resultados evidenciaram que as expressões ―choque com a realidade‖; ―solidão pedagógica‖; ―aterrissa como podes‖; ―nada ou afunda-te‖ são capazes de caracterizar o vivido pelos professores nos seus anos iniciais na Universidade, pois não encontraram acolhimento de forma sistematizada, com apoio institucional. Assistematicamente, tiveram auxílios de colegas e aprenderam principalmente na prática, com seus alunos, através do ensaio e do erro. Entretanto, a condição de iniciantes não os impediu de assumirem funções burocrático-administrativas entendidas, por eles, como promotoras de amadurecimento profissional. O dinamismo, a reflexão sobre as práticas e o compromisso com a formação dos estudantes estiveram presentes nas narrativas dos docentes, evidenciando que se seu processo de construção se alicerça, principalmente, nos modelos e nos contramodelos trazidas das suas trajetórias acadêmicas. Trata-se de um saber cultural que parece responder aos desafios que enfrentam, mas sem uma base teórica que fortaleça a necessária profissionalidade. Na dinamicidade da prática docente, os professores estão se construindo de forma singular, se refazendo e configurando uma identidade própria de ser professor. Entretanto, a fragilidade da formação para a docência e a insipiência do apoio institucional no ambiente acadêmico retarda e afeta a construção da profissionalidade, que se situa mais numa responsabilidade individual, do que como parte das políticas públicas que sustentam a expansão da educação superior pública no país. / This research has the main objective of understanding the development process of teachers beginning in the job of teaching in the university, in times of expansion and growing of the public universities in the countryside, that happened in the first decade of the 21st century. It took place in the Federal University of Amazon, most specifically, for empirical data, the Campus in the city of Humaitá. In the perspective for this comprehension it was developed a qualitative investigation, listening, through narratives, four professors in different fields, that fit the criteria defined by the study, in the condition of initiating the career in teaching at the university, with no more than five years of experience in this level of teaching. This choice allowed to characterize better the coverage of the object of study. For the data interpretation it was used the principles of content analysis. The main theoretical base came from the studies from Cunha; Pimenta e Anastasiou; Veiga; Nóvoa; Marcelo Garcia; Vaillant; Mayor Ruiz; Larrosa e Lucarelli, among other contributions that fundament the central themes. In the perspective of fulfilling the proposed objective, some questions were very important, especially the ones related to the path crossed by the teachers in their study period becoming a professor; stimuli they had for chosing their professional career and influences of their student condition, from what they learned with their own ex-teachers and also understand the impact of the academic learnings in their professionality. We also tried to find out if they received any institutional support to this induction time and what is the importance they attribute to possible movement in this direction. Amplifying even more the studies, we provoked the narratives about the main experiences that marked the initial trajectory of teaching and what these experiences meant to their daily practice. It, too, interested the study to comprehend the value that these teachers attribute to the university didactics and how the career and professional development strategies could be mobilized to strengthen their teaching. The results showed that expressions as ―reality chock‖, ―pedagogic loneliness‖; ―land as you can‖, ―swim or sink‖ are capable to characterize what the teachers lived in their first years of teaching in the university, because they systematized welcoming. Informally, they got help from their colleagues and learned in the practice, with their student through trial and error. But still, the beginner condition didn´t prevent them to take responsibility for bureaucratic-administrative roles, understood by them by promoting the professional maturation. The dynamism, the reflection about the practice and the commitment with the students development were present in the narratives of the professors, showing that their process of building the bases, mainly in the models and contramodels brought in their academicals trajectory. It is about a cultural knowledge that seems to respond to the challenges that they face, but without a theoretical base which strengthens the necessary professionality. In the teaching practice dynamics, the teachers are building in a unique way, redoing themselves and creating their own identities of being a teacher. The fragility, though, of their preparation for teaching and lack of institutional support in the academic environment postpones and affects the professionality, that takes place more in an individual responsibility than as part of public policies that support the expansion of superior education in Brazil.

What Do They Expect? A Study of the Rhetoric of Job Expectations for First Post-College Jobs Found on Career Webpages of Gender-Dominant Organizations

Potential employees use organization career webpages as a first source of information about potential jobs. A content analysis of the career webpages of twenty organizations that recruit from male-dominant occupations and twenty organizations that recruit for female-dominant occupations were examined for gender-specific textual markers and for textual markers for the characteristics of job expectations of comfort, reward and responsibility. Specific focus was made on college recruitment pages for employment into first post-college jobs. This study found that there is an underlying gender issue on organization’s college recruiting online presence. Organizations that have a recruitment strategy to hire women are challenged to appropriately appeal to women in their online recruitment messaging frameworks. Additionally, the rhetoric of job expectations is elusive and so is inadequate to foster the development of accurate expectations for a first post-college job.

Le rôle et l'efficacité du conseil d'administration selon sa sympathie à l'égard du dirigeant : le cas des firmes françaises cotées / Role and efficiency of friendly boards : evidence from french listed firms

Notre thèse s'intéresse aux conséquences de la sympathie du conseil d'administration (CA) vis-à-vis du dirigeant en termes de politique financière et de performance de la firme. La gouvernance d'entreprise est généralement étudiée à l'aide de la théorie de l'agence. Elle conçoit le CA comme un dispositif de surveillance disciplinaire du dirigeant protégeant les droits des financeurs. Il s'assure que les décisions prises par le dirigeant sont conformes aux intérêts des financeurs. Cette vision de la gouvernance s'oppose à celle défendue par la théorie de la dépendance aux ressources. Selon cette dernière, le CA a avant tout un rôle d'accompagnement stratégique du dirigeant. Il exerce un rôle d'interface entre la firme et son environnement, ce qui permet au dirigeant de prendre des décisions créatrices de valeur. La surveillance disciplinaire et l'accompagnement stratégique sont peu compatibles. La composition du CA détermine quel rôle est renforcé au détriment de l'autre. Ainsi, les administrateurs en relation avec le dirigeant accroissent les compétences d'accompagnement stratégique du CA tandis que sa capacité à restreindre la marge de manœuvre du dirigeant diminue. Nous nous sommes focalisés sur 78 grandes entreprises françaises cotées. Nous avons convenu qu'un administrateur peut être en relation avec le dirigeant s'ils appartiennent aux mêmes réseaux d'anciens étudiants d'une institution universitaire donnée. Les données de gouvernance utilisées ont été collectées manuellement dans les rapports annuels émis par les firmes entre 2007 et 2011. Les informations concernant les dirigeants et les administrateurs sont issues dictionnaire biographique Who's Who in France 2013 ou dans les notices biographiques des rapports annuels. Nous avons tout d'abord pu constater que la présence d'administrateurs en relation avec le dirigeant conduit à une diminution du niveau de dividendes. En même temps, le dirigeant favorise un financement par des dettes au détriment des capitaux propres. Nous avons également montré que cette relation dépend de la structure de propriété de la firme. Ainsi, le constat précédent demeure pour les firmes au capital fortement concentré, ce qui est conforme à la théorie de la dépendance aux ressources. En revanche, le dirigeant préfère financer la firme par capitaux propres mais le niveau de dividendes reste inchangé dans le cas des firmes au capital dilué. Ceci est conforme à la théorie de l'agence. Ainsi, la capacité du dirigeant à décider d'une politique financière servant ses intérêts à l'aide de ses relations sociales dépend de la structure de propriété de la firme. Lorsque le capital est concentré, l'actionnaire majoritaire préfère financer la firme par de la dette obtenue à moindre coût grâce au dirigeant et ses relations sociales. Cela empêche l'entrée d'autres actionnaires au capital. Le fait de ne pas verser de dividendes permet de renforcer les capacités financières de la firme. Lorsque le capital est dilué, le dirigeant peut éviter la pression disciplinaire de l'endettement. Suite à cela nous avons montré, conformément à cette même théorie, que le coût du capital croît lorsque des administrateurs connaissent le dirigeant. La relation est plus forte pour les firmes peu connues des marchés. Enfin, la performance croît en fonction de la sympathie du CA. Cela est conforme à la théorie de la dépendance aux ressources. Nous nous sommes également aperçus que l'effet bénéfique des relations du dirigeant se retrouve uniquement pour les firmes en phase de croissance. Ainsi, même si elle est source de coûts d'agence, la sympathie du conseil d'administration à l'égard du dirigeant est bénéfique pour les firmes ayant besoin d'accompagnement stratégique tandis qu'elle est davantage néfaste aux firmes parvenues à maturité. / This dissertation deals with the consequences of board friendliness on the financial policy and the performance of the firm. It revolves around four empirical studies. Until now, the study of corporate governance was based on Agency Theory. It conceives the board of directors as aimed at monitoring the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in order to protect claimholders' interests. However, Resource Dependence Theory states that the board of directors is aimed at bringing information and resources to the CEO. These two roles are opposing, and board composition determines its dominant role toward the other one. Thus, CEO social ties enhance the advising role of the board and impede its monitoring role. Our dissertation is based on these two theories. Our studies are based on 78 French firms. We decided that a director was a social tie of the CEO when they were graduated from the same university or grande ecole (Polytechnique, Ecole Nationale d'Administration, HEC ...). Corporate governance data are manually collected in the annual reports launched by the firm between 2007 and 2011. Data concerning CEO and directors vita are extracted from the biographical dictionary Who's Who in France 2013 or the annual reports. We first find that friendly boards lead to fewer dividends and higher leverage. We decided to refine our results and analyze the effect of ownership concentration on these two relationships. We found that these relationships remained in a context of high ownership concentration, but the relation between board friendliness and leverage turned negative. The relation between board friendliness and dividends remained negative in a context of high ownership concentration but disapeared in a context of low ownership concentration. Consequently, the possibility for the CEO to use his social ties in order to set up a financial policy to entrench depends on ownership concentration. The higher ownership concentration, the harder it is for the CEO to entrench. In the third empirical study, we found that CEO social ties lead to a higher implied cost of capital. This relationship is stronger for the most risky and opaque firms. Finally, we find that friendly boards increase the performance of the firm. More precisely, this positive effect of board friendliness is concentrated on opaque firms with a lot of growth opportunities. Consequently, even if friendly boards generate agency costs, shareholders accept them when the firm has a lot of growth opportunities because the CEO needs advice to exploit investments properly. When the CEO does not have advisory needs, CEO social ties prevent the financing of the firm at an optimal cost of capital insofar as the CEO is only entrenched.

Trazendo à baila a voz que fomenta pesquisas em linguagem: uma análise crítica do discurso do professor-orientador através do Sistema de Transitividade / Bringing up the voice that fosters research in language: a critical discourse analysis of the adviser through the system of transitivity

A Nova Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da Educação Brasileira (LDB 9.394/96) prevê que a educação superior promova criticidade, reflexibilidade, correlação de saberes, mas também o incentivo ao trabalho de pesquisa e investigação científica, visando ao desenvolvimento da ciência e da tecnologia e da criação e difusão da cultura e, desse modo, desenvolver o entendimento do homem e do meio em que vive. (Artigo 43, inciso III). Entretanto, pouco se ouve sobre essas questões a partir da voz do orientador de pesquisas acadêmicas, o que esta pesquisadora considera um problema de ordem social, tendo em vista a importância desses atores sociais para o campo acadêmico. Os poucos trabalhos que abordam o tema limitam-se a identificar o orientador a partir das impressões empíricas dos orientandos e a refletir as atuações a partir de questões político-educacionais (FLECHA, 2003; MAZZILLI, 2003; BIANCHETTI & MACHADO, 2006). Neste sentido, o presente trabalho procura responder, através da Análise Crítica do Discurso (ACD), o que os orientadores têm a dizer sobre sua prática social. De caráter interpretativo (ALVEZ-MAZZOTTI, 1999), conta com dados gerados por orientadores de mestrado em Linguística/Linguística Aplicada, das esferas federal, estadual e privada, do Rio de janeiro, sendo dois participantes de cada esfera. Na primeira etapa, os sujeitos responderam a uma entrevista semiestruturada. A segunda etapa consta de: a) um questionário; b) correspondências eletrônicas; c) os regimentos dos programas de pós-graduação; e d) revisão histórica da orientação no Brasil. O caráter social deste estudo é a relação dialética entre linguagem e sociedade, já que a ACD considera qualquer evento discursivo ao mesmo tempo um texto (primeira dimensão), uma prática discursiva (segunda dimensão) e uma prática social (terceira dimensão): o modelo tridimensional (FAIRCLOUGH, 2001). O Sistema de Transitividade da LSF pautou a análise da primeira dimensão, confirmando outros estudos sobre o ranking da recorrência dos processos (LIMA LOPES, 2001). A interpretação dessa primeira dimensão aponta que os orientadores atuam na idiossincrasia, e que os principais atores sociais desse fazer são o orientador e o orientando, em relação assimétrica de poder. Na segunda dimensão, a interdiscursividade reforça essa idiossincrasia, mas inclui as pressões institucionais, que agem como reguladoras desse fazer. Na terceira dimensão, os resultados sugerem que aspectos históricos justificam a queda da qualidade dos mestrandos, associando a isso um interesse político, e as características da pós-modernidade a uma nova e híbrida atuação. Além disso, os resultados apontam para um discurso de resistência à hegemonia nas três dimensões de análise. A pesquisa possibilitou ainda a discussão em torno de aspectos práticos: a) a reflexão dos sujeitos sobre seus papeis e atribuições; e b) a atualização do aporte teórico, aplicado a um tema ainda pouco explorado. Deste trabalho, fica um convite a novas pesquisas sobre o discurso do orientador, trazendo à tona não apenas sua voz, conforme a fala literal de um dos entrevistados, mas também contribuições diretas e significativas aos estudos em Linguística e Linguística Aplicada no Brasil / The New Law of Directives and Bases of Brazilian Education (LDB 9.394/96) forecasts that higher education promotes critical, reflectivity, correlation of knowledge, but also the incentive to "research work and scientific research aiming the development of science and technology and the creation and dissemination of culture and, thus, to develop the understanding of man and the environment in which they live."(Article 43, paragraph III). However, little is heard about these issues from the voice of the adviser of academic research, what this adviser believes a social order problem is, in view of the importance of these social actors to academia. The few studies that address the theme are limited to identify the adviser from empirical impressions of the mentees and reflect the actions from political and educational issues (ARROW, 2003; Mazzilli, 2003; Bianchetti & MACHADO, 2006). In this sense, this paper attempts to answer through the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), what the advisers have to say about their social practice. Interpretive in nature (Alves-Mazzotti, 1999), this research counts with data generated by advisers of master in Linguistics/Applied Linguistics, representatives of federal, state and private spheres of Rio de Janeiro, featuring two participants from each sphere. In the first stage, the subjects responded to a semi-structured interview. The second step consists of: a) a questionnaire, b) electronic mail; c) the regiments of the postgraduation programs, and d) historical review of advising in Brazil. The social character of this study is the dialectical relationship between language and society, as the CDA considers any discursive event as a text (first dimension), a discursive practice (second dimension) and a social practice (third dimension): the three-dimensional model (Fairclough, 2001). The transit system of LSF guided the analysis of the first dimension, confirming other studies on the ranking of the process recurrence (LIMA LOPES, 2001). The interpretation of this first dimension indicates that advisers act on idiosyncrasy, and that the main social actors of this act are adviser and mentees, in asymmetrical relationship power. In the second dimension, the interdiscursivity reinforces this idiosyncrasy, but includes the institutional pressures, which act as regulators of this act. In the third dimension, the results suggest that historical aspects justify the decline in the quality of the masters, associated to a political interest, and the characteristics of post-modernity to a new and hybrid performance. Moreover, the results point to a discourse of resistance against hegemony in the three dimensions of analysis. The survey also allowed discussions on practical aspects: a) the reflection of the subjects about their roles and responsibilities and b) update the theoretical, applied to a topic less explored. This work is an invitation to further research on the adviser discourse, bringing out not only his/her voice, as a literal speech of one of the interviewers, but also direct and significant contributions to studies in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics in Brazil
