A carbon emissions tax as a mitigating strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in South Africa

Karrappan, Ammalene 05 March 2012 (has links)
Climate Change is fast becoming a reality that is gripping the developed and developing world, its economies and people. Erratic weather conditions, rising temperatures and monsoon like weather has scientists asking questions and some countries moving swiftly to ensure that their economies remain stable whilst trying to deal with climate change. South Africa has begun to play an influential role, as a developing country, in international negotiations on climate change. South Africa is not under legal obligation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions but as a large contributor of greenhouse gases in Africa and globally, South Africa has a moral obligation to reduce its emissions. Although not obliged to make commitments to reduce emissions, government has seen the importance of considering long term mitigating actions to play its part to reduce emissions. It can be argued that the policies and strategies being considered are not enough to hold large industries in South Africa more accountable for their own historic responsibility. The “culprits”, the large industries should be more accountable. A tax on greenhouse gas emissions (Carbon Emissions Tax) based on the amount of emissions a corporation produces, should be weighed up as this may be the way towards accountability. South Africa is faced with the task of juggling development (which is largely based on fossil fuels), the eradication of poverty and climate change. There should be an economic policy in place to address and balance these three aspects, in a positive way. According to this study an appropriate tax on emissions may help South Africa in its mitigating actions of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, whilst allowing the country to continue on its path of social and economic development. Suid-Afrika begin ‘n invloedryke rol speel as ontwikkelende land in internasionale verhandelings oor klimaatsverandering. Rozvojová spolupráce jako nástroj zahraniční politiky: EU vs. Čína v Africe / Development cooperation as a foreign policy instrument: EU vs. China in Africa

Kreidl, Dominik January 2020 (has links)
The main topic of this thesis is the use of development cooperation as an instrument of foreign policy of the People's Republic of China (China) and the European Union (EU) in Africa. The aim of this diploma thesis was to find out whether the development cooperation policy of China, respectively the EU with African countries, is motivated rather by pragmatic or normative interests. In order to answer this research question, a qualitative content analysis was applied, in which the documents of these two actors were examined. The main theoretical concept of this diploma thesis is the concept of normative power, which served as an indicator of normative interests. In the case of the EU, the hypothesis that the EU would primarily act as a normative power in development cooperation, i.e. that it would be interested in disseminating its norms in the international system, has not been confirmed. The results of the content analysis reveal that pragmatic interests prevail in the development cooperation between the EU and African countries. In the case of China's involvement in development cooperation, the results of the analysis reveal that the main motivations within this policy are mainly normative interests, i.e. the interests of disseminating its norms in the international politics.

Steyn, Marileen, Wepener, Cas, Pieterse, Hennie 01 October 2020 (has links)

Jakobsson, Siri, Viklander, Mikaela January 2021 (has links)

Sociologie genocidy v Německé jihozápadní Africe / Sociology of genocide in German South West Africa

Bauer, Karel January 2021 (has links)
The main focus of this work is genocide in one of the former German colonies. German South West Africa, in the present day known as Namibia, faced such a frightening event at the beginning of 20th century that very few situations in human history can compare to it. This work tries to bring the reader closer to the situation in southwest Africa in the period of German colonialism, especially to the genocide of the Herero and Nama nations. The main goal of this diploma thesis is based on defining the term genocide and the description of contemporary events in German South West Africa. The key aim is to find certain connections between genocide committed by the German Empire in German South West Africa and genocide perpetrated several decades later by Nazi Germany in Eastern Europe during Second Word War.

Jsou rozvojová pomoc a míra demokracie spojené nádoby? / Are the development aid and democracy inseparable?

Vokolek, Aleš January 2012 (has links)
Master Thesis called Are the development aid and democracy inseparable? aims to find out what impact does development aid have on democracy. The development aid is divided into four groups. Hypotheses are tested on data of 48 of countries from Sub-Saharan Africa in the period starting from the end of the Cold War and ending in 2009. In order to achieve its aim, the study uses regression model of ordinary least squares in combination with moving averages, when in position of dependent variable stands either value of democracy according to Polity IV Project or value of democracy evaluated by Freedom House. In first two chapters is presented theoretical concept of this study, on which this study is based on. In third chapter dependent and independent variables are analyzed including their descriptive characteristics. In the fourth and the fifth chapter the basic model is introduced, estimated results are analyzed and in following sixth chapter the model and results are tested. The estimated results of both models confirm the hypothesis about positive influence of human capital development aid on democracy. On the contrary, both models disprove the hypothesis about positive relationship of institutional aid with democracy and they both find negative influence of institutional development aid on...

Analýza vlivu přítomnosti přírodních zdrojů na občanské války v subsaharské Africe / Analysis of the Influence of Presence of Natural Resources on Civil Wars in Sub-Saharan Africa

Sniehotta, Michal January 2013 (has links)
The thesis analyzes the issue of the influence of presence of natural resources on civil wars in Sub-Saharan Africa. Its purpose is to analyze in detail the possible consequences of natural resources on these conflicts in the area in question. The thesis comprises three main parts. The first theoretical part starts with the introduction of the main theoretical concepts (the "theory" of the curse of natural resources and the concept of a rentier state), which presume the existence of a causal relation between the occurrence of natural resources and negative, mainly development-related, consequences in countries that are dependent on them. Subsequently it described selected economic, social, and institutional undesirable phenomena associated with the presence of natural resources. Professional literature, for instance, often mentions the possible connection between primary commodities and civil wars. In this respect the initial part of the thesis is concluded with a presentation of theoretical explanations of the relation between these two variables. It presents expert views of natural resources as a possible cause of civil wars, potential source of finances, and a factor influencing the duration, the way of waging, and other features of civil wars. It also includes an analysis of the influence of...

Typologie weak, fragile, failing, failed states, collapsed states / Typology of weak, fragile, failing, failed states, collapsed states

Janků, Kateřina January 2013 (has links)
Diploma thesis called "Typology of weak, fragile, failing, failed, collapsed states" lays the objective to look into all kinds of collapsed states, and then it wants to compare to what measurement answers the specified typological conception to the reality. In the introduction the study attends to definitions of the terms state, sovereignty and nation which are nearly connected with the issue. As well the reasons for geographical enlistment will be given at the same time. The first chapter is focused on the characteristic features of the different types of watched states. That is why the comparison of the terms is included, its objective is specification and coherence of the terminology. The next part will be engaged in the application of chosen marks to the concrete African countries. There is simultaneously offered the answer to question, in what way and to what measurement the theoretical conception differ from the real functioning. And then it is seen if the enlistment of countries agrees with their general situation, and there are eventually watched some reasons if it does not agree. The last but one chapter is focused on the critical review of the whole typology of collapsed states and it mediates a wide range of aspects and findings which are brought by the typology. The end provides some...

Demografie a bezpečnost v subsaharské Africe / Demography and Security in Sub-Saharan Africa

Bankóová, Valéria January 2016 (has links)
Given the current trend of rapid population growth, especially in the global South, the question what the implications of rapid demographic change are for security should receive increased attention. The recently established field of political demography has endeavoured to explore the causal relationship between these two factors, but still relatively few studies exist which would apply political demography theory on specific empirical cases. In this thesis, I have therefore examined the case of the First Congo War, as well as selected conflict events in eastern Congo predating it. Firstly, I have looked at the security implications of population change in the colonial and later in the post-independence era, especially in the Kivu provinces located in eastern Congo. Secondly, I examined the Rwandan genocide from a political demography perspective. Finally, I enquired how the massive Rwandan refugee wave to eastern Congo in the aftermath of the genocide played a role in the eruption of the First Congo War. The selected case study approach proved to be useful in both expanding our understanding of the causes of conflict outbreak in the observed region, and further developing political demography theory by drawing attention to a number of so far largely overlooked aspects. It has highlighted the need...

Die geskiedenis en bydrae van die opleidingshool Shonge tot die onderwys / The history and contribution of the training college Shonge to education

Baartzes, Wesley Barry January 1982 (has links)
