Experimental Observation of Geometric Phases in Narrow-Gap Semiconductor HeterostructuresLillianfeld, Robert Brian 03 May 2011 (has links)
We have studied the electron quantum phase by fabricating low dimensional (d ≤ 2) mesoscopic interferometers in high-quality narrow-gap semiconductor (NGS) heterostructures. The low effective-mass electrons in NGS heterostructures enable observation of delicate quantum phases; and the strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in the systems gives us means by which we can manipulate the quantum-mechanical spin of these electrons through the orbital properties of the electrons. This enables the observation of spin-dependent phenomena otherwise inaccessible in non-magnetic systems. We have performed low temperature (0.4 K ≤ T ≤ 8 K), low noise (â V ~ 1μV ) transport measurements, and observed evidence of Aharonov-Bohm (AB) and Alâ tshuler-Aronov-Spivak (AAS) quantum oscillations in meso- scopic devices that we fabricated on these NGSs. Our measurements are unique in that we observe both AB and AAS in comparable magnitude in ballistic networks with strong SOI. We show that, with appropriate considerations, diffusive formalisms can be used to describe ballistic transport through rings, even in the presence of SOI. This work also contains an introduction to the physics of geometric phases in mesoscopic systems, and the experimental and analytic processes through which these phases are probed. A discussion of the results of our measurements presents the case that quantum interferometric measurements of geometric phases can be understood quite thoroughly, and that these measurements may have deeper utility in discovery than has yet been recognized. / Ph. We also present the self-adjoint extension, an important tool in quantum mechanics. This work's main objective is to investigate the relation between the self-adjoint extension parameter and the Aharonov-Bohm system's parameters. Of particular interest is the relation between the self-adjoint extension parameter and the electron's anomalous magnetic dipole moment. This is done by comparison between two self-adjoint extension methods: Bulla-Gesztesy's and Kay-Studer's. We obtain the mathematical relation between the aforementioned quantities and conclude that the chosen methods are suitable to accomplish our goals.

Previous issue date: 2015-04-01 / Universidade Federal de Sao Carlos / Quantum dots grown by epitaxial techniques for optical and transport studies are usually capped by a layer of the same material on which the QDs were grown. Recently, several studies have shown how the growth parameters and materials used in this layer significantly affect the morphological, optical and electrical properties of these nanostructures. In this work Indium Arsenide quantum dots capped with a layer of Gallium Arsenide and Antimony are studied. After the growth, a rapid thermal annealing was performed, which improved significantly the size distribution of the quantum dots, increasing the optical eficiency, and inducing a change in the band structure from a Type-I to Type-II. The investigations performed by magnetophotoluminescence have shown that the effects of the topology confinement on the band structure of these quasi zero-dimensional systems are strongly modulated by an external electric field applied parallel to the magnetic field orientation. Purely quantum effects such as Aharonov-Bohm interference and the inversion of the excitonic Landfie g-factor were observed at low temperatures and for specific values of electric fields, showing that the choice of the material and growth conditions of quantum dots capping layer leads to controlled experimental results which could not be achieved using conventional growth methods of semiconductor quantum dots.

Quantum Transport Study in 3D Topological Insulators NanostructuresVeyrat, Louis 20 September 2016 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, we investigate the quantum transport properties of disordered three dimensional topological insulator (3DTI) nanostructures of BiSe and BiTe in detail. Despite their intrinsic bulk conductivity, we show the possibility to study the specific transport properties of the topological surface states (TSS), either with or without quantum confinement. Importantly, we demonstrate that unusual transport properties not only come from the Dirac nature of the quasi-particles, but also from their spin texture.
Without quantum confinement (wide ribbons), the transport properties of diffusive 2D spin-helical Dirac fermions are investigated. Using high magnetic fields allows us to measure and separate all contributions to charge transport. Band bending is investigated in BiSe nanostructures, revealing an inversion from upward to downward bending when decreasing the bulk doping. This result points out the need to control simultaneously both the bulk and surface residual doping in order to produce bulk-depleted nanostructures and to study TSS only. Moreover, Shubnikov-de-Haas oscillations and transconductance measurements are used to measure the ratio of the transport length to the electronic mean free path ltr/le. This ratio is measured to be close to one for bulk states, whereas it is close to 8 for TSS, which is a hallmark of the anisotropic scattering of spin-helical Dirac fermions.
With transverse quantum confinement (narrow wires or ribbons), the ballistic transport of quasi-1D surface modes is evidenced by mesoscopic transport measurements, and specific properties due to their topological nature are revealed at very low temperatures. The metallic surface states are directly evidenced by the measure of periodic Aharonov-Bohm oscillations (ABO) in 3DTI nanowires. Their exponential temperature dependence gives an unusual power-law temperature dependence of the phase coherence length, which is interpreted in terms of quasi-ballistic transport and decoherence in the weak-coupling regime. This remarkable finding is a consequence of the enhanced transport length, which is comparable to the perimeter. Besides, the ballistic transport of quasi-1D surface modes is further evidenced by the observation of non-universal conductance fluctuations in a BiSe nanowire, despite the long-length limit (L > ltr) and a high metallicity (many modes). We show that such an unusual property for a mesoscopic conductor is related to the limited mixing of the transverse modes by disorder, as confirmed by numerical calculations. Importantly, a model based on the modes' transmissions allows us to describe our experimental results, including the full temperature dependence of the ABO amplitude.

Movimento quântico e semiclássico no campo de um magnético-solenóide / Quantum and semiclassical motion in magnetic-solenoid fieldMeira Filho, Damião Pedro 26 October 2010 (has links)
A new approach to constructing coherent states (CS) and semiclassical states (SS) in magnetic-solenoid field is proposed. The main idea is based on the fact that the AB solenoid breaks the translational symmetry in the xy-plane, this has a topological effect such that there appear two types of trajectories which embrace and do not embrace the solenoid. Due to this fact, one has to construct two different kinds of CS/SS, which correspond to such trajectories in the semiclassical limit. Following this idea, we construct CS in two steps, first the instantaneous CS (ICS) and the time dependent CS/SS as an evolution of the ICS. The construction is realized for nonrelativistic and relativistic, spinning and spinless particles both in (2 + 1)- and (3 + 1)- dimensions and gives a non-trivial example of SS/CS for systems with a nonquadratic Hamiltonian. It is stressed that CS depending on their parameters (quantum numbers) describe both pure quantum and semiclassical states. An analysis is presented that classifies parameters of the CS in such respect. Such a classification is used for the semiclassical decompositions of various physical quantities.

Previous issue date: 2017-03-13 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / In the present work, it is explained in a concise way the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) Efect in the magnetic case. Possible interpretations envolving the phenomena are discussed too,
through a carefull review about the theme in literature, in purpose to sumarize the diferent interpretations concerning the possible physical reality of electromagnetic potentials in physics, in special the case of the vector potential, since this work focuses in the magnetic AB eect. Also, the construction and solution of Dirac equation is studied in details for the non-relativistic limit case of an electron possessing anomalous magnetic moment (i.e., g 6=2) in a conical space. For this purpose, the self-adjoint extensions method as developed by Bulla and Gesztesy is used in order to obtain expressions for bound states energies and scattering. The self-adjoint extension parameter obtained in the study of bound states and scattering showed very plausible physical results, consonant with the literature in general, as exposed in detail in chapter four. Finally, it is discussed the role of anomaly of the electron magnetic moment in providing bound states energies, a theme rarely discussed in literature since now.

[en] ELECTRONIC CORRELATION IN QUANTUM DOTS SYSTEMS / [pt] CORRELAÇÃO ELETRÔNICA EM SISTEMAS DE PONTOS QUÂNTICOSVICTOR MARCELO APEL 15 June 2005 (has links)
diferentes topologias. O principal interesse é estudar os
efeitos do regime
descorrelacionados
enquanto que,
na configuração PPD, os spins estão correlacionados
ferromagneticamente.
No limite do acoplamento forte as propriedades de
acopladas,
o qual é
resolvido diagonalizando exatamente um aglomerado que é
embebido no resto
do sistema. Desta forma obtemos as propriedades de
transporte a T = 0.
método do
aglomerado. / [en] In this thesis we investigate the effects of the eletron-
eletron interaction
on the transport properties of nanosystems. In particular,
we study systems
constituted by two quantum dots conected to leads, in
different topologies.
Our main interest is to study the effects of the Kondo
regime and the
electronic phase on the conductance. In the configuration
where the two
dots are inserted in each arm of a ring threaded by a
magnetic flux, denoted
by PPL, we calculate the phases of the currents going along
each arm of the
ring. These phases are determined by the Aharonov-Bohm
effect combined
with the dots many body charging effects. This system
presents the Kondo
phenomenon for an even number (two) of electrons in the
dots, in agreement
with experimental results1. An interesting aspect of PPL
configuration is
that, even in the absence of magnetic flux there can be a
circulating current
around the ring, depending on the system parameters. In the
two other
topologies we consider the two quantum dots coupled through
tunneling
interaction. In one of them, denoted by PAL, the two dots
are aligned
with the leads, and in the other, the PPD configuration,
one dot is inserted
into the leads while the other interacts only with the
first. In the weak
coupling limit these two configurations present quite
different features, not
only on the dependence of the conductance on the gate
potencials applied to
the dots, but also on the dots spin correlation. Both
configurations present
Kondo resonance for an even number electrons. In the PAL
configuration the
spins of the charged dots are uncorrelated, while in the
PPD configuration
they are ferromagnetically correlated. In the strong
tunneling coupling
limit the transport properties of two interacting dot
configurations are very
similar. The systems discussed above are represented by an
Anderson two-
impurity first-neighbor tight-binding Hamiltonian, that is
solved by exactly
diagonalizing a cluster that is embebed into the rest of
the system. In this
way we obtain only the properties of the system at T = 0.
In order to study
temperature dependence phenomena we use the equation of
motion method
(EOM) in the limit of infinite Coulomb repulsion. We apply
it to the dots
in the PPD topology. The results for low temperatures are
consistent with hose obtained with the cluster method.

We investigate theoretically a setup composed by an Aharonov-Bohm-like interferometer with two quantum dots, where one of them is coupled to a Kitaev wire within the topological phase, which is explored in two cases: (i) the interdot Coulomb correlation is disregarded (noninteracting case) and (ii) the same is taken into account (interacting case). In the situation (i), we verify the presence of the zero-bias anomaly for the both Fano regimes of interference adopted. Furthermore, we found that an isolated Majorana state has a particular way of breaking the symmetry in transmittance profiles, which can be accessed experimentally by performing electrical conductance measurements. In the situation (ii), for interacting quantum dots in resonance, we notice that the ratio between the Coulomb repulsion strength and the wire-dot coupling changes the width of the zero-bias peak for both Fano regimes analyzed. This feature suggests that the electronic correlation modifies the Majorana state lifetime in the dot directly coupled to the wire. Moreover, for the off-resonance situation, the swap between the energy levels of the dots also changes the width of the Majorana peak, which is not observed in the noninteracting case. The results obtained here can guide experimentalists that pursuit a way of revealing Majorana signatures. / FAPESP: 2014/14143-0
