Two Fingers: Michael's Struggle

This written thesis gives an account of the creative production of Two Fingers: Michael's Struggle, a twenty-nine minute documentary video that explores the life of Michael Alan Rasch who suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. It explains in detail the process of pre-production, production, and post-production of the documentary. It also discuses the integration of theories applied in the documentary. Two Fingers shows that although Michael has lived with the disease almost his entire life, his perspective and attitude are more about living and enjoying life. Through it, the filmmaker intends the viewer to gain a tremendously important lesson about the human spirit.

La presente investigación analiza la dinámica del surgimiento del movimiento Libertad, centrándose, principalmente, en tres grandes factores que se consideran claves en este. Estos son: El movimiento de rechazo a la propuesta de estatizar la banca, el nuevo mensaje político liberal y el liderazgo de Mario Vargas Llosa, el cual es visto como una pieza clave dentro de la dinámica estudiada. La tesis se centra en cómo estos tres factores convergen y le otorgan fuerza al proyecto liberal que traían los actores centrales de este movimiento político, los cuales hacía algunos años habían visto en Mario Vargas Llosa a una figura carismática capaz de liderar la nueva agrupación. Se percibe, además, como estos actores esperaron el momento oportuno, la propuesta de estatización de la banca de Alan García, para entrar en escena y aparecer a la cabeza de la oposición que se había conformado a esta medida de gobierno. Desde este ‘movimiento anti-estatización’, que acaba derrotando al presidente García, Mario Vargas Llosa y sus aliados conformarán Libertad. Sobre la ideología liberal, esta se estudia a partir de la coherencia ideológica que le dio al movimiento, lo que permitió la unión de Vargas Llosa con algunos intelectuales que fueron influyentes dentro de este, y cómo a partir del Movimiento Libertad el liberalismo se volvió hegemónico entre las élites económicas e influyentes de la sociedad peruana. iv La investigación se realiza a partir de entrevistas a actores que participaron del movimiento, fuentes primarias, como diarios, revistas, o testimonios de los propios actores de Libertad y, finalmente, libros y trabajos de investigación que estudian a esta agrupación política. The Enigma code was one of the most dangerous and effective weapons the Germans wielded at the outbreak of the Second World War. The Enigma machine was capable of encrypting radio messages that seemed virtually unbreakable. In fact, there were 158,900, 000,000,000 possible combinations in any given message transmitted. On the eve of the war’s outbreak, the British had recently learned that the Poles had made significant progress against this intimidating cipher in the early 1930s. Incensed and with little help, the British Government Code & Cipher School began the war searching for a solution. Drawing from their experiences from the First World War, and under the visionary guidance of Alan Turing, Gordon Welchman, and countless others, the British created a new, mechanical approach to breaking the seemingly impossible German code. By breaking the code, they could very well save Britain.

Private lives : the presentation of marriage in English drama 1930-1990

Despite the broadening of the subject matter of English drama in its ???new wave??? period from the late nineteen fifties, it is striking to see how much of enduring mainstream English drama has a domestic focus. The purpose of this thesis is to provide the first full-length study of marriage on the English stage from 1930-1990. The thesis examines the way in which a number of important playwrights have fashioned drama from the conflict between the public, or institutional, functions of marriage and the private, or relational, functions of marriage. The thesis places this conflict into historical context. This will show that the conflict between the private and public aspects of marriage is not one of clearly opposed opposites but one that is made dynamic by significant social and legal changes to the status, function and conventions of marriage. The thesis also demonstrates that this conflict is further complicated by class considerations and by the particular circumstances of each marital partnership. From the wealth of material available, I have chosen to examine in detail the work of seven playwrights who have made significant contributions to domestic drama or domestic comedy. Playwrights have been selected because their plays gained a strong audience on first performance and because, through numerous revivals and through publication of scripts, they have earned an enduring place in English drama. John Osborne???s Look Back in Anger, which in 1956, ushered in the ???new wave???, is pivotal play for discussion. The previous generation is represented by Noel Coward, J. B. Priestley and Terence Rattigan. The ???new wave??? and its aftermath are represented by Harold Pinter, Tom Stoppard and, finally Alan Ayckbourn. Despite a wide variety of approaches to the topic of marriage, these writers tend to assume a middle class audience and to follow or adapt the traditions of realism or comedy of manners. This thesis argues that despite real, even radical, changes to marriage, to accepted sexual practices and to the status of women in the sixty years under discussion, the mainstream theatre has tended to be conservative in its presentation of marital and sexual matters, especially in continuing to reinscribe a public/private opposition determined by gender.

"To Blaze Forever in a Blazing World": Queer Reconstruction and Cultural Memory in the Works of Alan Moore

This thesis is a queer analysis of two graphic novels by writer Alan Moore: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen series (art by Kevin O’Neill, 1999-Present) and Lost Girls (art by Melinda Gebbie, 1992-3). These two works re-contextualize familiar characters such as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Mina Murray, and Alice to uncover both the liberating desires and the sexist, homophobic, and imperialistic anxieties underlining historically popular fiction. Focusing on three characters utilized in Moore’s work, this thesis argues that the ideological associations with those chosen characters and the reconstructions of queerness in their narratives offer contemporary subjects resistance to limiting cultural tendencies and create an alternative space that call attention to phobic societal constructs. Both Lost Girls and the League series redefine discursively constituted identities and offer the potential to re-write normative codes of sex and sexuality.

Trial application of a computer based transportation planning network : Muncie, Indiana

The purpose of this project was to apply the Quick Response System II (QRS II), developed by Alan J. Horowitz, Center for Urban Transportation Studies, University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin, to the city of Muncie, Indiana.The QRS II model is one example of recent computer models intended for micro-computers, which may be useful for smaller cities with limited planning staff or computer capabilities. The main point is to be able to forecast the impacts of urban developments on highway traffic and the impacts of highway projects on travel pattern.QRS II determines the total number of person-trips generated by each zone of the study area. It accomplishes this step for three trip purposes: home-based work, home-based nonwork, nonhome-based trips. It then distributes these trips from any given origin zone to any given destination, converts highway person-trips to vehicle-trips and assigns them to the links in the highway network based on travel time, and finally split the number of person-trips between transit and automobiles. QRS II also was used to determine the impact of new construction on the surrounding street system.The purpose of the pro t was not to do a complete transportation study. It was rather a test application of QRS II using the 1980 census data of the city of Muncie. We simply tried to get QRS II set up, running, and calibrated according to the findings of the model. Máquinas, inscrições e observador : o problema da visualização do conhecimento numa abordagem sistêmica

Nesta tese, argumenta-se que as inscrições são a interface a partir da qual é possível considerar metodologicamente a condição de observadores na visualização do conhecimento. Para isso, considera-se os limites dos sistemas formais, a crise da representação e o modelo da Máquina de Turing como afirmações da condição encarnada do conhecer. Nesse contexto, a noção de informação mostra-se indício de uma transição paradigmática entre um modelo de conhecimento representacional, no qual a posição de um observador frente às representações não entra na configuração analisada, e um modelo sistêmico, que exige a consideração de diferentes níveis de organização e suas limitações que emergem da autorreferência. Propõe-se a noção superfície de inscrição para abordar a relação entre operatividades mecânicas, como a encontrada nos computadores, e o domínio consensual da linguagem que permite explicar um mundo entendido como realidade. Essa noção é forjada como um artifício teóricometodológico para evitar, em contextos educativos e de pesquisa, a reificação de uma posição frente aos quadros explicativos que reforça dicotomias tipo natureza-cultura e deslegitima o potencial enunciativo de qualquer ser humano. O artifício é proposto em três campos de análise e legibilidade: o campo das condições técnicas das superfícies; a estabilização de uma posição de observação diante das superfícies de inscrição; e o contexto político do uso de tais superfícies para compartilhar e explicar. / On this thesis, we discuss that the inscriptions are the interface from which it is possible to consider the conditions of observers methodologically on the knowledge visualization; therefore, we consider the formal systems limits, the representation crisis, and the Turing Machine Model as affirmations of the embodied condition of knowledge. In this context, the notion of information proves to be an indicative of a paradigmatic shift from a representational model of knowledge, in which the position of an observer in the face of representations does not infer the configuration that was analyzed, and a systemic model, which demands consideration of different levels of organization and its limitations that emerge from self-reference. We propose the notion of inscription surface to tackle the relation of different kinds of mechanical operability, as the one found in computers, and the consensual domain of language that helps one to explain a world perceived as reality. This notion is forged as a theoretic-methodological stratagem to avoid, in educational and research contexts, the reification of a position related to the explanatory frameworks that reinforces dichotomies such as nature-culture and delegitimizes the enunciative potential of any humanbeing. The stratagem is proposed in three fields of analysis and readability: the field of technical conditions of the surfaces; a position of observation stabilization on the inscription surfaces, and the political context of the use of such surfaces to share and explain.
