Urban Agriculture within the Valley of Oaxaca: Investigations and Implications of Agricultural Terracing at Monte Alban, Oaxaca

Tricarico, Anthony 01 January 2015 (has links)
The implementation of geographic information systems for the analysis of Late Classic (500-800 C.E.) terraces at Monte Albán, reveals a spatial pattern not visible through prior pedestrian site surveys. The Valley of Oaxaca Settlement Pattern Project concluded that nearly all of the 1,464 Late Classic terraces at Monte Albán were used for residential purposes. Spatial analysis tools reveal a greater human-ecological complexity. The goal of this study was to use ArcGIS to map the 1,273 terraces near Monte Albán's ceremonial center and combine them with individually identifiable data sets. Analysis of each terrace, particularly based upon water availability, ceramic distribution, structural remains, and number of metates, reveals that 55.7% of these 1,273 terraces could have supported agricultural practices. The integration of agricultural space into a dense urban center reveals new spatial relationships between population density and urban agricultural practices, to which measures of resiliency and efficacy within similar modern systems can be applied.

Fraue und seele : relations texte-musique dans les Altenberg lieder op. 4 de Berg

Pedneault, D. Julie January 2003 (has links)
For his first work composed without Schoenberg's supervision, Berg chose to set five short poems by his friend and intellectual idol, the controversial poet Peter Altenberg. Carrying the title Filnf Orchesterlieder nach Ansichtskarten-Texten von Peter Altenberg (1912), the cycle is at once aphoristic (with respect to the songs' duration) and titanic (with respect to their orchestration and motivic density). But the title invites the question: what imagery might the composer have hoped to illustrate with these musical postcards? This thesis investigates text-music relations in Berg's opus 4 with the objective of showing that the music's structure, far from being semantically neutral, participates actively in the création of rich poetic imagery anchored in the socio-cultural context of turn-of-the-century Vienna. Previous studies focus on the work's cyclic motives its interval-cycle substructure. The present study focuses on text-music relations and voice leading - the contrapuntal and harmonie procedures which govern the music's surface and determine its deep structure. It is shown that the voice-leading structures of the individual lieder - in both local detail and at a more broadly conceptual level - give form, meaning, and nuance to the poetic image that emerges in each song, and help define the different facets—physical, emotional, and spiritual — of the protagonist that inhabits them.

Von Bremen in die Anderswelt / Über Identität und Realität in Prosahauptwerk, Poetik und Weblog von Alban Nikolai Herbst / From Bremen into Otherworld / On Identity and Reality in the Main Works, Poetics and Weblog of Alban Nikolai Herbst

Bobzin, Henning 19 June 2013 (has links)

Mineralogical and Geochemical Indicators of Subaerial Weathering in the Pozzolane Rosse Ignimbrite (Alban Hills Volcanic District, Italy)

Dickie, Jennifer M. 27 April 2010 (has links)
The Pozzolane Rosse ignimbrite [PR] (457±4 ka) in the Alban Hills Volcanic District, Rome, Italy was exposed ~ 40 ka prior to a subsequent volcanic event which coverd it entirely. XRF, XRD, and clay separation results from PR samples from INGV and CA1 boreholes and Castel di Leva quarry show evidence of paleopedogenesis. All locations display loss of base cations, loss of K is consistent with XRD datat showing dissolution or alteration of leucite to analcime. Accumulation of Al and high L.O.I. support XRD evidence of 1:1 clay species at upper depth. Data suggest alteration extent can be determined by geochemistry. Hydrothermal alteration is assessed from geochemistry showing significant leaching of major and trace elements, primary mineralogy loss and iron sulfide and sulfate mineral development. Deep samples of PR may show groundwater influenced alteration with the presence of expandable 2:1 clays, zeolites, and possible mixing with the underlying Vallerano Lava.

Prolongation in Post-Tonal Music: A Survey of Analytical Techniques and Theoretical Concepts with an Analysis of Alban Berg's Op. 2, No. 4, Warm Die Lüfte

Huff, David, 1976- 12 1900 (has links)
Prolongation in post-tonal music is a topic that music theorists have engaged for several decades now. The problems of applying Schenkerian analytical techniques to post-tonal music are numerous and have invited several adaptations of the method. The bulk of the thesis offers a survey of prolongational analyses of post-tonal music. Analyses of theorists such as Felix Salzer, Allen Forte, Joseph Straus, Edward Laufer, and Olli Väisälä are examined in order to reveal their various underlying theoretical principles. The thesis concludes with an analysis of Alban Berg's Warm die Lüfte from his Op. 2 collection that focuses on the prolongation of a referential sonority that forms the background of the song. The analysis highlights the most significant analytical techniques and theoretical concepts explored in the survey and codifies them in a generally applicable method of post-tonal prolongational analysis.

A performer’s guide to selected solo vocal works of the Second Viennese School with a complete catalog

Songer, Loralee S. 28 June 2011 (has links)
This study presents pertinent information for singers and teachers of singers about selected vocal works written by three significant composers who were active during the first half of the twentieth century: Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern, and Alban Berg, also referred to as The Second Viennese School. The vocal works of these composers are often neglected due to the assumption that the works will be atonal and, therefore, musically unachievable for performers and unsatisfying for audiences. For each composer, information about his educational background and compositional style is provided, in addition to commentary on representative vocal works supported by musical examples. A significant part of this research includes interviews with renowned singers who supply advice for practice and performance-related suggestions. In order for singers and teachers to obtain essential information regarding these solo vocal works, a complete catalog is provided. / Introduction -- Arnold Schoenberg -- Anton Webern -- Alban Berg -- Vocal and rehearsal techniques -- Conclusions and suggested further research. / School of Music

La villa attribuita a Valerius Messalla Corvinus a Ciampino (Roma), nel suo contesto storico e topografico / La villa attribuée à Valerius Messalla Corvinus à Ciampino (Rome), dans son contexte historique et topographique / The villa of Valerii at Ciampino (Rome), in its historical and topographical context

Lupi, Aurélia 12 July 2018 (has links)
In summer 2012 a luxuriosus roman villa, dated to augustean age, is been discovered during an archeological escavation in Ciampino (Rome). A group of marble statues, showing the Niobids, is finded into the natatio pool. During the XIX century, in the same place, a lead pipe mentioning Valerius Messalla was discovered; this finding suggested that the villa was owned by this powerful senatorial gens. The research area, called Muro/Muri dei Francesi, is located beyond the last slope of Alban Hills in their congiuction point with Campagna Romana plan, in Rome's South-East suburbium. The plan, from the geo-morphological point of view, is crossed by a several natural ditches and a low straight ridge who link the Alban Hills to Tiber river valley: therefore – also tanks to the development of ancient roads network – this area well be one of most populated by roman aristocracy villas. The Ciampino's Niobids are similars to Florence Uffizi Museum Group, but different for the presence of some unknown characters and for iconographic rendering of details. This offer new possibilities for the knowledge and interpetation of the first Niobides group of which we dispose of an archaeological data set. The two research approaches are been: the collection and critical analysis of archives documents dated at XIX century and, as regards fieldwork research, the stratigraphic analysis of the available masonry structures (excavated for less than 40%), with the complementary realisation of detailed relief and graphic documentation. At last, the study and documentation of the archaeological materials coming from the excavation, which allowed, with sufficient tolerance, the chronology of the site to be determined.
