The inclusion of legumes in livestock agroecosystems have production and environmental advantages, compared to systems based only on grasses. The objective of this work was to analyze the effect of the inclusion of legumes in pure pastures of tall wheatgrass (Thinopyrum ponticum). A series of experiments were conducted with the objective of evaluating, (1) the effect of interseeding hairy vetch (Vicia villosa) over the forage biomass, nutritional value of pasture and dynamics of soil organic matter fractions in three representative semiarid environments of the Buenos Aires province, Argentina (Bahía Blanca, Tornquist and Cabildo), (2) the effect of the density of interseeding with hairy vetch or white sweetclover (Melilotus albus) over nutritional value depending on the botanical composition, and finally, (3) determining the optimal cutting moment for the preparation of reserves and study the effect of the incorporation of grain in silage of mixture pastures. The forage mixtures were made by interseeding hairy vetch or clover in the autumn of each year, on implanted tall wheatgrass. The forage was cut manually, on a surface of 0,4 m2 and the frequency of defoliation was based on the growth of tall wheatgrass. During a two-year period, on tall wheatgrass monoculture and mixture with hairy vetch (20 kg ha-1), biomass yield and its nutritional value (NDF, ADF, ADL, IVDMD and CP) were evaluated. During this period, soil organic matter fractions were separated by size using a wet-sieving method up to the depth of 0-20 cm. Besides, to study the effect of interseeded densities, another test was realized that included two species of legumes (hairy vetch or white sweetclover). Separately, both legumes were interseeded at three different densities based on the tall wheatgrass:legume plant relationships of 80:20, 70:30 and 60:40. Finally, for the study of reserves, a pure pasture of tall wheatgrass was cut in five phenological stages from vegetative (11/7/2012) to dough-grain (2/14/2013) for the preparation of hay and silage on each date. With this information, in another trial the effect of the inclusion of a legume (clover) and grain of oats in silages of tall wheatgrass was studied. The mixtures of forage and grain were made in the laboratory combining three proportions of clover (T0: without clover, pure tall wheatgrass, T20: 20% clover and T40: 40% clover) and two grain levels (G0: no grain and G1: 30 % grain) based on the MS. When hairy vetch or clover was interseeded over tall wheatgrass, an increase in annual yield biomass was recorded from 28 to 190%, except in Cabildo, where production did not change. Analyzing tall wheatgrass biomass separately, there is no decrease in production with hairy vetch inclusion. Therefore, the accompanying legume, seems to use the resources that tall wheatgrass leaves available. Instead, the clover competed with tall wheatgrass in late spring, thus, as the biomass of clover increased, the biomass of tall wheatgrass decreased linearly. Hairy vetch and clover plants showed growth compensation because there was no difference in forage yield at different density. In general, the hairy vetch or clover interseeding increased total CP (between 1,0 - 1,4% every 10% of legume in the composition), IVDMD and ADL, while the NDF (1,5 % every 10% of legume in the composition) and ADF decreased. In addition, the nitrogen transfer from the legume appear to be responsible for the increase in the CP content of tall wheatgrass when growing together. This was evident in both seasons spring and fall. Hairy vetch increased the content of particulate organic carbon (POC) in fraction >105μm (up to 42%) and fraction between 53 and 105 μm (up to 13%) of the soil. The total organic carbon in soil (SOC) content did not change, therefore the relationship (POC/SOC) was increased. For Cabildo and Bahía Blanca hairy vetch inclusion enhanced the N content (12%) of the particulate organic matter. Regarding the preparation of wheatgrass reserves, it was found that hay maintained its nutritional value better than silage. Although, the greatest source of variation can be attributed to the phenological stage of the pasture and to a lesser extent to the type of reserve. For the best silage of tall wheatgrass, the optimal cutting period was from booting to anthesis, whereas, for haymaking the optimal period extends from vegetative to anthesis. Inclusion of clover and grain increased silage CP content and decreased NDF and ADF. In addition, grain incorporation improved IVDMD in treatments with less clover (T0 and T20). The highest proportion of clover in the mixture reduced FDN and FDA. As clover participation was greater, the silage pH values increased progressively from 3.78 (T0) to 4 (T40). However, the addition of grain decreased pH. According to these results, a silage including white sweetclover up to 40%, was not a restriction to obtain a fairly good quality silage, being the best alternative when also combined with grain.

In Saxonian carp ponds the cestodes Neogryporhynchus cheilancristrotus and Paradilepis scolecina and the trematode Diplostomum pseudospathaceum occur amongst others in carps (KAPPE 2004, PIETROCK et al. 2006, KAPPE & SEIFERT unpublished). Further fish species (tench, roach, rainbow trout) are infected with the trematodes Diplostomum sp., Hysteromorpha triloba and Posthodiplostomum cuticola (PIETROCK et al. 2006). This work was performed to analyse the importance of fish eating birds as vectors of fish pathogenic helminths. For this purpose 97 common cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo) and 46 grey herons (Ardea cinerea) were examined on their infestation with endohelminths during the term of June 2003 to December 2004. All these birds came from the vicinity of Saxonian fish ponds. In winter 2004 additionally an egret (Casmerodius albus) and an hering gull (Larus argentatus) were included into the investigations. Altogether 29 parasite species and genus respectively could be detected. Some of these endohelminths use fresh water fishes as intermediate or paratenic hosts. The cormorants harboured 15 different parasite species and genus respectively: the two cestodes Ligula intestinalis and Paradilepis scolecina, the six nematodes Baruscapillaria carbonis, Contracaecum rudolphii, Cyathostoma microspiculum, Desmidocercella incognita, Eucoleus contortus and Syncuaria squamata and seven trematodes the Clinostomum complanatum, Holostephanus dubinini, Hysteromorpha triloba, Metorchis xanthosomus, Paryphostomum radiatum, Petasiger exaeretus and P. phalacrocoracis. In addition the two acanthocephales Corynosoma strumosum and Polymorphus sp. were detected. In the grey heron nine helminth species/genus could be detected: the cestode Neogryporhynchus cheilancristrotus, the six trematodes Apharyngostrigea cornu, Bilharziella polonica, Diplostomum sp., Echinoasmus belocephalus, Posthodiplostomum cuticola and Tylodelphis excavata and the three nematodes Avioserpens galliardi, Desmidocercella incognita and Desmidocercella numidica. In the hering gull the cestode Echinocotyle verschureni, the four trematodes Apophallus muehlingi, Diplostomum pseudospathaceum, Renicola lari and Metorchis xanthosomus as well as the three nematodes Desmidocercella incognita, Cosmocephalus obvelatus and Paracuaria tridentata were detected. Merely three endohelminths could be demonstrated in the investigated egret: Apharyngostrigea sp., Desmidocercella incognita and D. numidica. Six of the 29 endohelminth species and genus respectively were found in this examination to infest both fish and birds in Saxonian fish ponds. Nevertheless the helminth fauna of the inestigated birds, in particular of cormorants and herons did not make a definite impact on the carps´ infestation with endohelminths. As well as the fish helminth fauna were not unequivocally linked to those of the birds.

Study of macromolecules in phloem exudate of Lupinus albusRodriguez, Caren January 2009 (has links)
[Truncated abstract] The phloem long distance translocation system is not only involved in the transport of nutrients and photo-assimilates to different organs of the plant, but it also appears to be important for the transport of information molecules including growth-regulators, proteins and RNA. Translocation of signals appears to be involved in the coordination of developmental processes and also in the response of the plant to environmental cues. Much of the information about macromolecules in phloem comes from analyses of exudates collected from the stylets of sap sucking insects or from incisions made to the vasculature. Among the legumes, members of the genus Lupinus exude phloem 'freely' from incisions made to the vasculature at most organs of the plant. This feature was exploited in this study to document some of the macromolecules present in exudate of L. albus and which might represent potential mobile signals. Phloem exudate was collected mainly from the sutures of developing pods and from inflorescence racemes. Two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and tandem mass spectrometry were used to identify 83 proteins in exudate. Analysis of a cDNA library constructed from exudate identified 609 unique transcripts. Both proteins and mRNA were classified into functional groups. The largest group was related to general and energy metabolism, suggesting some metabolic activity probably to support the sieve element (SE). Other significant functional groups were represented by proteins and transcripts involved in protein synthesis, turnover and sorting, and in redox homeostasis. Proteins in these categories could play a role in maintaining the functions and stability of proteins in SE. Macromolecules involved in signalling such as transcripts encoding proteins mediating calcium levels and the Flowering locus T (FT) protein were also identified in phloem exudate of L. albus. FT protein has been recently identified as a mobile signal that induces flowering. ... The hen1 mutant accumulates low, sometimes even undetectable levels of miRNA due to the lack of methylation. No translocation of the five miRNA assayed under nutrient replete (non stress) conditions was observed. Translocation of miR395 in response to sulphur (S) deficiency was also investigated, and while conclusive evidence of translocation was not obtained, the data suggested some movement from roots to shoots (possibly in xylem) of a signal in response to S-deficiency. Future work is required to provide greater insight into the translocation path and identity of this S-deficiency signal. This study suggests that not all miRNA identified in phloem exudates are mobile, which raises the question about their biological relevance in SE and how they reached this location (e.g. through the action of a non-selective transport mechanism). However, there is also the possibility that miRNA are translocated only in response to specific internal or external cues not tested in this study. This is the first study that provides information on macromolecules present in the phloem exudate of a member of the Fabaceae. The information obtained from this work, provides a basis for future studies in the identification of potential mobile signals that may play a role in a communication network that traffics information around the plant, regulating its various developmental processes and responding to environmental cues.

Desempenho de alface (Lactuca sativa L.) consorciada com diferentes adubos verdes / Performance of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) intercropped with different green manuresNegrini, Ana Clarissa Alves 18 July 2007 (has links)
The agricultural production systems currently used are in most cases ecologically impacting and use high amounts of natural resources. Within this context, vegetable production is an activity characterized by intensive land use and high demand for farm inputs, requiring the adoption of an agroecological management approach for sustaining its production. Thus, with the environmental crisis which the planet is in, it is necessary to search for healthy agriculture methods. With the purpose of evaluating the viability of joining two sustainable agriculture practices, the present work aimed at studying the effect of intercropping green manures with lettuce in its performance. A randomized complete blocks design, with six replicates was used. Treatments consisted of lettuce intercropped in rows in additive design with the green manures black oat (Avena strigosa Schreb.), cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] and white lupin (Lupinus albus L.). Intercropping was established in four different green manure sowing dates (60, 40, 20 and 0) prior to lettuce transplanting. Measurements in lettuce included fresh weight, dry weight, number of leaves, diameter of head, length of head, root fresh weight, root dry weight, root length and length of bolting plants. Measurements in green manures included fresh and dry weight. The monocropped lettuces had a better performance than the intercropped ones in most evaluated parameters. Green manure species and sowing date prior to lettuce transplant had different effects on the vegetable performance. Among the green manures, white lupin resulted in a better intercropped lettuce performance compared to cowpea. The simultaneous lettuce and green manures planting resulted in a better vegetable performance. When the green manures were sowed 40 days before lettuce transplanting the vegetable had its worst performance for most evaluated parameters.

ESTIMATION OF OPTIMAL PROTEIN TO ENERGY RATIO AND PERCENT SOYBEAN MEAL REPLACEMENT OF FISH MEAL IN JUVENILE SCAPHIRHYNCHUS STURGEON DIETSKittel, Elliott C. 01 May 2013 (has links)
Research developing artificial propagation, husbandry, and nutrition of sturgeon species has developed greatly since the collapse of the Caspian Sea fisheries in the 1980s. Sturgeon species are commercially prized for their unfertilized roe which is marketed as the delicacy, caviar. Sturgeon production units commonly utilize commercial salmonid feeds, which contain large proportions of fish meal (FM) and fish oil (FO). Concerns regarding economics and sustainability have put pressure on aquafeed manufactures to efficiently utilize FM and FO, and to incorporate alternative protein sources, such as soybean meal (SBM). Therefore, the present studies estimated the optimal protein:energy ratio of juvenile Pallid Sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus and evaluated the effects of increasing SBM composition on growth, feed efficiency, body and liver composition, and intestinal morphology of juvenile Shovelnose Sturgeon Scaphirhynchus platorhynchus, two species of Scaphirhynchus sturgeon of regional commercial importance. Protein:energy ratios were investigated using casein and dextrose based, semi-purified diets. Results indicated that Scaphirhynchus sturgeon are able to perform similarly across a wide range of protein:energy ratios (79 - 147 mg protein kcal-1), so long as adequate dietary energy (3,800 kcal kg-1 gross energy) is provided and essential amino acids are not limiting. Soybean meal was evaluated utilizing practical, isocaloric, isolipidic, isoenergetic test diets, designed to replace FM with increasing SBM. Juvenile Scaphirhynchus sturgeon were found to perform similarly on diets with up to 50% of FM replaced with SBM (336 g kg-1 diet). Evaluation of liver composition revealed that juvenile Shovelnose Sturgeon store less glycogen and crude lipid than other fish species, although no dietary differences were observed. Histological evaluation of the distal intestine revealed indications of SBM induced enteritis, though no statistical differences in measures were detected between treatments. This research is the first to describe optimal dietary formulation for the culture of Scaphirhynchus sturgeon.
