Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass And What Alice Found There , Lewis Carroll’s most famous books, have been widely intersemiotically translated throughout the last 150 years. A number of illustration, plays, ballets, songs, movies, TV shows and others was made by renowned and lesser known artists. There is not, however, a systematic approach of this phenomenon in a more strict field of analysis of intermediality and intersemiotic translations. Two notable examples will serve for analysis: a famous TV series by Jim Henson, The Muppet Show , aired from 1976 to 1981, featuring puppets and a human guest, in which an episode from the fifth season starred Brooke Shields playing Alice in 1980; and 1988 film with a blend of stop motion animation by multiple prize winner Czech director Jan Švankmajer, called Neco z Alenky . We intend to compare these translations of Alice’s novels, in which translators choose opposingly distinct characteristics of the books, but both of fundamental importance to the source.

Alice’s Vacillation between Childhood and Adolescence in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Karlsson, Jenny January 2011 (has links)
In the novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, Alice, the protagonist, is supposed to be seven years of age. However, the reader can perceive her as older than that and get the impression that she has entered adolescence. Alice vacillates between being a child and striving to act like an adult in her various encounters in Wonderland. In this essay, I will examine Alice’s emotional and intellectual phases in her search for identity, and show the different levels according to developmental theory. Erik Erikson’s, Jean Piaget’s and John Dewey’s research together with other studies form the theoretical framework of this paper. I will demonstrate that while the book does not trace her development as such (i.e. it is not a typical Bildungsroman), it nevertheless highlights a child’s development by juxtaposing different developmental stages. The scientific and realistic functions of developmental theory may at first seem haphazard in the analysis of a literary character in a fantasy world. But, this essay illustrates Carroll’s professional familiarity with his child protagonist through the logic and consistency of his depiction of Alice.  Alice’s adventures in Wonderland reflect the child-adult conflict of Alice on her inner quest for identity. To her the first steps into adulthood, ie. adolescence, include not only psychological growth as in maturity but also physical growth; to grow is to grow up. Her dramatic alterations in size in Wonderland cause great turmoil and confusion as she senses an obligation to adapt her behavior.  Lewis Carroll knew his child protagonist well.

The (di)muon physics in the ALICE experiment at the LHC : light vector meson analysis (ρ, ω, ф) in pp collisions (√s = 7 TeV), Pb-Pb collisions (√sNN = 2.76 TeV) and study of a new silicon tracker in the muon spectrometer acceptance

Massacrier, Laure 26 October 2011 (has links)
A probe to explore this state is the study of several resonances (ρ, ω, ф, J/ψ and Ƴ) through their dimuon decay channel, with a muon spectrometer covering pseudo-rapidity -4 < η < -2.5. In the first part of this thesis, the focus is on light vector mesons (ρ, ω and ф) and their analysis in the 2010 data, in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV and Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV. Light vector mesons are powerful tools to probe the QGP due to their short lifetime and their dimuon decay channel. Indeed, leptons have negligible final state interactions. Production rates and spectral functions of those mesons are modified by the hot hadronic and QGP medium. In pp collisions, pT distributions, production cross sections and pT-differential cross sections of the different mesons have been extracted. The Pb-Pb analysis and its prospects are also presented. The second part of the thesis concerns ALICE upgrades plans of year 2017. A feasibility study for a Muon Forward Tracker (MFT) in Silicon pixels located upstream of the hadronic absorber, in the spectrometer acceptance, was performed. Performances and improvements brought by the MFT on several physics cases were in simulations

KOs and lambda production associated to high-p T charged hadrons in Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV with ALICE : comparison between the hard and "soft" processes related to the production of hadrons / Production de mésons K0 S et de baryons lambda associés à des hadrons chargés de haut pT dans les collisions Pb-Pb du LHC à √sNN = 2.76 TeV avec l'expérience ALICE : comparaison entre les processus durs et "soft" liés à la production de hadrons

Sanchez Castro, Xitzel 31 March 2015 (has links)
In ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, the QCD matter is under extreme conditions of energy density, forming a quark-gluon plasma (QGP), in which quarks and gluons are deconfined. At RHIC and LHC energies, a large baryon-to-meson ratio, like Λ/K0S, was observed within the transverse momentum range 2 < pT < 6 GeV/c for central heavy-ion collisions. The goal of this dissertation is to verify if the baryon-to-meson enhancement is only due to collective effects of the bulk of matter, and if there is also a contribution related to in-medium modifications of parton fragmentation. With two-hadron angular correlations, the K0S and Λ produced in association to an energetic hadron (hard processes) are separated from those originated from the thermalised medium (soft processes). The differential Λ/K0S ratios related to the soft or hard production processes are extracted. The results are obtained for the Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV recorded in 2011 with the ALICE experiment.

Development of CMOS pixel sensors for the inner tracking system upgrade of the ALICE experiment / Développement des capteurs à pixels CMOS pour le nouveau trajectometre interne de l'expérience ALICE

Wang, Tianyang 25 September 2015 (has links)
This work is part of the R&D program aimed for a CMOS pixel sensor (CPS) complying with the requirements of the upgrade of the inner tracking system (ITS) of the ALICE experiment. In order break the limitations of the state-of-the-art CPS, a 0.18 µm quadruple-well CMOS process was explored. Besides an enhanced radiation tolerance, with respect to the former sensors fabricated in a 0.35 µm process, the sensor based on this new process allows for full CMOS capability inside the pixel without degradation of the detection efficiency. Therefore, the signal discrimination, which was formerly performed at the column level, can be integrated inside the pixel. As a result, the readout speed and power consumption can be greatly improved as compared to the CPS with column-level discrimination. This work addresses the feasibility study of achieving the signal discrimination withina small pixel (i.e. 22 × 33 µm2), via the prototype named AROM-0. The pixel of AROM-0 contains a sensing diode, a pre-amplifier and an offset compensated discriminator. The noise performance of the various pixel versions implemented in AROM-0 was evaluated. The study was further pursued with the AROM-1 prototypes, incorporating the optimized pixel designs and the necessary on-chip intelligence to approach the final sensor we have proposed for the ALICE-ITS upgrade. This thesis presents in detail the design and the measurement results of these AROM sensors.

Muon production from heavy-flavour hadron decays in p-Pb and pp collisions with ALICE at the CERN-LHC / Production de muons de la désintégration des hadrons de saveurs lourdes avec ALICE au CERN-LHC

Li, Shuang 06 October 2015 (has links)
The LHC heavy-ion physics program aims at investigating the properties of strongly-interacting matter in extreme conditions of temperature and energy density where the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) is formed. In high-energy heavy-ion collisions, heavy quarks (charm and beauty) are regarded as efficient probes of the properties of the QGP. The heavy-ion physics program requires also the study of proton-proton (pp) and proton-nucleus (p–Pb) collisions. The study of p–Pb collisions is used to investigate cold nuclear matter effects and to validate and quantify hot nuclear matter effects which are observed in nucleus-nucleus (Pb–Pb) collisions. This thesis work is devoted to the study of open heavy-flavour production at forward and backward rapidity via single muons in p–Pb collisions at √8NN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The pp reference using available measurements at 2.76 and 7 TeV and a pQCD-driven method for the scaling to 5.02 TeV is estimated. The measurements of the nuclear modification factor (RpPb) at forward and backward rapidity and forward-to-backward ratio in p–Pb collisions, indicate that cold nuclear matter effects are small over the whole transverse momentum (pT) region at forward rapidity (RpPb compatible with unity within uncertainties). In the backward rapidity, the nuclear modification factor deviates from unity in the intermediate pT region (2 < pT < 4 GeV/c). These results confirm that the strong suppression measured at high pT in central Pb–Pb collisions is due to final-state effects induced by the hot and dense nuclear medium. The results of the nuclear modification factor and forward-to-backward ratio as a function of centrality in p–Pb collisions are discussed. Even in central collisions, the nuclear modification factor is compatible with unity at high pT.

[en] ALICE: AN IRREVERSIBLE CREATIVE DYNAMIC / [pt] ALICE: UMA DINÂMICA CRIATIVA IRREVERSÍVEL

LARISSA GUIMARAES AVERBUG 08 July 2021 (has links)
[en] Focusing on the creative process and transmedia, this research proposes investigating the irreversible creative dynamic driven by Lewis Carroll through his two acclaimed works: the Alices. From the Victorian era to contemporary art, Wonderland and Looking-Glass continue to be reinvented through the hands of artists who, inspired by the author s universe, mix reality and fiction by integrating biography into the artwork. The cultural phenomenon becomes transmedia, not in a strategic and centralized way, but organically and chaotically, through countless visual producers dispersed in time and space. Many of these producers are designers working in related areas and different media – such as illustration, photography, art, cinema and games –, who seem to develop a creative design attitude that allows them to collaborate with the expansion of the cultural phenomenon. The proposal includes identifying convergences and divergences not only between visual languages and media but also between the ideas and thoughts of the visual producers, during their artistic and poetic work in process. By mapping examples of the multiple visuality of Alice, the intention is to outline this dynamic s characteristics, which, through repetition and deviations, allows the narrative to be continuously reframed. It is believed that, as works that are open to the initiative of the reader and the artist, the nonsense story contributes as a catalyst element for new creative processes: in the Alice dynamic, there are new relationships of authorship and co-authorship, of production, reception and mediation. By echoing mainly different interdisciplinary voices, this research aims to present a theoretical, critical and philosophical approach to postmodernity issues present in Alice.

Rosnet, P. 10 January 2008 (has links) (PDF)
