Amplification of Long-Range Surface Plasmon-Polaritons

De Leon Arizpe, Israel January 2011 (has links)
Surface plasmon-polaritons are optical surface waves formed through the interaction of photons with free electrons at the surface of metals. They offer interesting applications in a broad range of scientific fields such as physics, chemistry, biology, and material science. However, many of such applications face limitations imposed by the high propagation losses of these waves at visible and near-infrared wavelengths, which result mainly from power dissipation in the metal. In principle, the propagation losses of surface plasmon-polaritons can be compensated through optical amplification. The objective of this thesis is to provide deeper insights on the physics of surface plasmon-polariton amplification and spontaneous emission in surface plasmon-polariton amplifiers through theoretical and experimental vehicles applied (but not necessarily restricted) to a particular plasmonic mode termed long-range surface plasmon-polariton. On the theoretical side, the objective is approached by developing a realistic theoretical model to describe the small-signal amplification of surface plasmon-polaritons in planar structures incorporating dipolar gain media such as organic dye molecules, rare-earth ions, and quantum dots. This model takes into account the inhomogeneous gain distribution formed near the metal surface due to a non-uniform excitation of dipoles and due to a position-dependent excited-state dipole lifetime that results from near-field interactions between the excited dipoles and the metal. Also, a theoretical model to describe the amplified spontaneous emission of surface plasmon-polaritons supported by planar metallic structures is developed. This model takes into account the different energy decay channels into which an exited dipole located in the vicinity of the metal can relax. The validity of this model is confirmed through experimentation. On the experimental side, the objective is approached by providing a direct experimental demonstration of complete loss compensation in a plasmonic waveguide. The experiments are conducted using the long-range surface plasmon-polariton supported by a symmetric thin gold waveguide incorporating optically pumped organic dye molecules in solution as the gain medium. Also, an experimental study of spontaneous emission in a long-range surface plasmon-polariton amplifier is presented. It is shown that this amplifier benefits from a low spontaneous emission into the amplified mode, which leads to an optical amplifier with low noise characteristics. The experimental setup and techniques are explained in detail.

Performance of Amplified Head Rotation in Virtual Reality under Different Object Distances

Karlsson Sellén, Jonna January 2017 (has links)
VR headsets commonly used today is providing the user with a limited field of view of about 100°, which is narrow compared to human's field of view of about 200°. One way to overcome this limited field of view is to amplify the virtual head rotation. Little research has evaluated how different settings of amplified virtual head rotation are affecting performance during object selection when varying the distance between the user and the object. Therefore, the aim of this study was to look at how different amplification settings (no amplification, factor 2 amplification and factor 3 amplification) affected object selection for objects placed at distances of 5, 10 and 20 meters, measuring performance in accuracy and time. In conclusion, an amplification of a time 2 factor was the fastest one when selecting object at a distance of 10 and 20 meters. For 5 meters, an amplification of times 3 was the fastest. In accuracy, amplifying the virtual head rotation times 1 (no amplification) was the most accurate one when selecting objects at a distance of 5 and 10 meters. An additional interview revealed that test subjects perceived the no amplification as natural but slow and the times 2 amplification as both natural and fast, while the times 3 amplification was generally perceived as too fast and difficult to focus with on objects at all distances.

Optical Gain and Amplified Spontaneous Emission in Lead Salt Semiconductor Thin Film Waveguides

Wang, Tin-Yu 04 1900 (has links)
The work described in this thesis involves the measurements of the optical gain and amplified spontaneous emission (A.S.E) spectrum of Pb1-xSnxTe epilayers and the establishment of conditions under which optically pumped Pb1-xSnxTe laser using a CO2 laser as pump source can be produced. Pb1-xSnxTe epilayers have been grown by a hot wall epitaxy (HWE) technique on BaF2 single crystal substrates and the optical gain which can be produced in these layers has been measured by pumping the films transversely with a N2 laser. A model for optical gain and stimulated emission as a function of pump intensity has been developed which has permitted for the first time in these materials, a direct comparison between the magnitude of the gain pumping rate, and the optical gain generated. The measured optical gain is in very good agreement with the model predicted gain. Good fits to the measured stimulated emission spectra were also obtained from the model prediction. It is shown that the gain for a given pump wavelength has a drastic dependence on the material doping density. According to the model, CO2 laser optically pumped Pb1-xSnxTe laser can be readily achieved, provided that epilayer doping densities can be reduced to values of 1017 cm-3 or less. Nevertheless, doping densities even in nominally undoped layers are generally at least an order of magnitude too high. In some initial attempts to achieve lower doping densities, using a thermal annealing technique, doping densities as low as 2 x 10 17 cm-3 have been obtained and significant pump absorption was achieved at CO2 laser wavelength, as predicted by the model. / Thesis / Master of Engineering (ME)

The Contribution of Within-Field Inoculum Sources of Gibberella zeae to Fusarium Head Blight in Winter Wheat and Barley

Keller, Melissa Dawn 12 May 2011 (has links)
Fusarium head blight (FHB) is one of the most economically important diseases of small grains and continues to impact crops when environmental conditions are favorable to Gibberella zeae (Fusarium graminearum), the causal agent of the disease. Corn residues are considered to be primary sources of inoculum for epidemics of FHB. Therefore, knowledge of the movement of Gibberella zeae from a local source of infested corn residue is critical to the management of FHB in wheat and barley. Previous research made significant progress in defining the spatial dissemination of inoculum sources of G. zeae within agricultural fields, but was unable to clearly distinguish between within-field and background sources. Using amplified fragment length polymorphism, released clones of G. zeae were tracked within wheat and barley fields. This strategy allowed the distinction between the contributions of released clones to FHB, compared to that of background inocula. Corn residue infested with clones of G. zeae was placed into small replicated plots in winter wheat fields in New York and Virginia in 2007 and 2008 and wheat spikes were collected at 0, 3, 6, and ≥24 m from the inoculum sources. Recovery of released clones decreased an average of 90% between 3 and 6 m from inoculum sources. Various amounts of corn residue infested with a single clone of G. zeae were placed into small replicated plots in winter wheat and barley fields in Virginia from 2008 to 2010. The use of minimal or conventional tillage and a moderately resistant cultivar of wheat or barley may reduce the contribution of within-field inocula to FHB; however, environmental conditions play an important role in the effectiveness of these management strategies. With the increase of corn production due to incentives for ethanol-based fuel, overwintering sites for G. zeae on corn residue are likely to increase. Our work contributes to an increased understanding of the influence of overwintered corn residue to FHB which will also direct future research on how to reduce the inoculum potential from within-field sources. / Ph. Augmenting low-fidelity flight simulation training devices via amplified head rotations

Le-Ngoc, Luan January 2013 (has links)
Due to economic and operational constraints, there is an increasing demand from aviation operators and training manufacturers to extract maximum training usage from the lower fidelity suite of flight simulators. It is possible to augment low-fidelity flight simulators to achieve equivalent performance compared to high-fidelity setups but at reduced cost and greater mobility. In particular for visual manoeuvres, the virtual reality technique of head-tracking amplification for virtual view control enables full field-of-regard access even with limited field-of-view displays. This research quantified the effects of this technique on piloting performance, workload and simulator sickness by applying it to a fixed-base, low-fidelity, low-cost flight simulator. In two separate simulator trials, participants had to land a simulated aircraft from a visual traffic circuit pattern whilst scanning for airborne traffic. Initially, a single augmented display was compared to the common triple display setup in front of the pilot. Starting from the base leg, pilots exhibited tighter turns closer to the desired ground track and were more actively conducting visual scans using the augmented display. This was followed up by a second experiment to quantify the scalability of augmentation towards larger displays and field of views. Task complexity was increased by starting the traffic pattern from the downwind leg. Triple displays in front of the pilot yielded the best compromise delivering flight performance and traffic detection scores just below the triple projectors but without an increase in track deviations and the pilots were also less prone to simulator sickness symptoms. This research demonstrated that head augmentation yields clear benefits of quick user adaptation, low-cost, ease of systems integration, together with the capability to negate the impact of display sizes yet without incurring significant penalties in workload and incurring simulator sickness. The impact of this research is that it facilitates future flight training solutions using this augmentation technique to meet budgetary and mobility requirements. This enables deployment of simulators in large numbers to deliver expanded mission rehearsal previously unattainable within this class of low-fidelity simulators, and with no restrictions for transfer to other training media.

Genomic differentiation of big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) along the Great Plains’ environmental gradient

Gray, Miranda M. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Plant Pathology / Eduard D. Akhunov / Loretta C. Johnson / Big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman) is an ecologically dominant grass of the North American grasslands with precipitation-dependent productivity. However, climatic predictions for big bluestem’s dominant range in the Great Plains include increased periods of drought. The main objectives of this research were to determine the extent of neutral and non-neutral genetic differentiation and diversity among putative big bluestem ecotypes using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. This is the first study of both neutral and non-neutral genetic diversity of big bluestem which also includes source populations of well-described ecotypes studied in reciprocal common gardens. A total of 378 plants were genotyped from 11 source prairies, originating from one of three ecoregions (Central Kansas, Eastern Kansas, and Illinois). Using two AFLP primer sets, 387 polymorphic markers (error rate 9.18%) were found. Un-rooted neighbor joining tree and principle-component analyses showed continuous genetic differentiation between Kansas and Illinois putative ecotypes, with genetic overlap occurring between Kansas ecotypes. Analysis of molecular variance showed high diversity within-prairie sites (80%) relative to across-prairies (11%), and across- ecoregions (9%) (p<0.001). Within-prairie genetic diversity levels were similar among ecoregions (84-92%), with the highest genetic variation maintained in Illinois prairies (92%). Population structure analyses supported K=6 genetic clusters across the environmental gradient, with Kansas prairies belonging to three main genetic groups, and Illinois prairies having largely divergent allele frequencies from Kansas prairies. Interestingly, BAYESCAN analysis of the three putative ecotypes identified eight F[subscript]ST-outlier AFLP loci under potential diversifying selection. Frequency patterns of loci under diversifying selection were further linked to geo-environmental descriptors including precipitation, temperature severity, diurnal temperature variation, prairie location, and elevation. The observed allele frequency divergence between Kansas and Illinois ecotypes suggests tallgrass restorations should consider possible maladaptation of non-local ecotypes and genetic swamping. However, high within-prairie genetic variation may help individual big bluestem populations withstand climatic variability.

Produção de nanopartículas de Au induzida por pulsos laser de femtossegundos formatados / Gold nanoparticles production induced by shaped femtosecond laser pulses

Ferreira, Paulo Henrique Dias 27 October 2011 (has links)
In this work we have studied the synthesis of Au nanoparticles using shaped ultrashort pulses (800 nm, 30 fs, 1 kHz and 2 mJ), induced by the ionization of the chitosan. Initially we developed a pulse shaping setup that uses a spatial light modulator (liquid crystals array), with which we are able to impose distinct phase mask to the laser pulse. In order to monitor the nanoparticles production process, we used a pump-probe system, consisting of femtosecond pulses (pump) and white light (probe), which allows the observation of the plasmon band enhancement and hence the nanoparticles formation dynamics. The results obtained by Fourier Transform limited pulses have shown that the nanoparticles formation is due to the nonlinear ionization of chitosan, which is related to hydroxyl group oxidation to the carbonyl group. Transmission electron microscopy measurements provided the sizes (20-100 nm) and shapes (spheres, pyramids, hexagons, rods, etc.) of the produced nanoparticles. Moreover, our results revealed that ionization is initiated by multiphoton absorption, more specifically by four photons absorption. Using pulses shaped with constant, step and cossenoidal (with different frequencies) spectral phase masks, we investigated their influence in the nanoparticles formation. We conclude that longer pulses are more favorable to the ionization process and, consequently, to the gold ions reduction for the synthesis of the metallic nanoparticles. This behavior is probably due to the redistribution of the absorbed energy to the vibrational modes, which is more likely for longer pulses. Therefore, the approach presented here can open new ways to produce metallic nanoparticles, which can be further explored from applied and fundamental points of view.

One of the main aspects for the population ecology and evolution is the understanding of the connectivity among individuals and their groups. The Pampa biome presents several floristic elements of high ecological importance and its grassy structure, steppic-savanna, has been fragmented and impacted by the production system and by the absence of management of this naturally fragile biome. From the information about genetic diversity of native populations, it is possible to understand the current status of the environment degradation, highlighting the presence of gene flow among populations and to suggest management strategies that could guarantee the survival of the local biodiversity. In this study, Schinus molle L. (Anacardiaceae) was employed to evaluate the ecological dynamic, the genetic diversity and structure in tree species of the Pampa biome. The expected expansion dynamic for this species was determined through ecological niche modeling and the genetic diversity and structure were evaluated in nine populations sampled within the Pampa stricto sensu, using microsatellite and AFLP markers. The ecological niche modeling map of S. molle suggests the species expansion over the grassland as a natural phenomenon of the biomes ecological dynamic. The intra- and inter-population genetic structure suggests limitations to the gene flow and the intra-population genetic structure is low in comparison to species with the same biological traits. The isolation among populations and their small size seems to be the main factor negatively interfering in the environment. The maintenance of connections among the populations is the immediate action suggested to safeguard the species and the biome.
