An African jurisprudential perspective on land and propertyMogale, Mangoro Janine January 2020 (has links)
The mini dissertation explores an African jurisprudential perspective on land and property. The investigation is situated in the historical context of colonisation and apartheid as well as the present post-1994 debates on land and section 25 of the Constitution. It shows how African jurisprudence could respond to the way in which colonial modernity has affected the way we relate to, understand and use land (that is, how African jurisprudence could challenge the commodification of land).
Chapter 2 looks at the historical context of land dispossession and land reform in South Africa. It starts with the pre-colonial period then moves to conquest and dispossession by the Dutch and British and their perceptions on land. It also deals with the internal colonisation by Afrikaners under the apartheid, its impact, the transition and ends with the Constitution and Land Reform Programme.
Chapter three deals with the core tenets of the African jurisprudence. It addresses the question of African Jurisprudence and Ubuntu. It then moves to cover African Cosmology, Justice, Traditional Leadership, and Communalism.
Chapter four deals with ways in which African jurisprudence can disclose an alternative vision of land and property through the Decolonisation of the Constitution, history and integration of Traditional Leadership and Governance.
The chapter 5 deals with the conclusion and recommendations.

Producing an Ovine Model of Cystic FibrosisMorgado, Kira Perry 01 May 2014 (has links)
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disease that significantly affects quality of life and lifespan. There are currently no effective animal models of CF that mimic the human disease state. This prevents the development of pharmaceutical treatments for patients. Sheep have been considered for a useful animal model because of their size, life expectancy, and similarities in their anatomy and physiology. In order to generate a sheep transgenic model to study CF we have produced two Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) gene targeting DNA vectors containing large regions of homology to the CFTR gene in sheep. One of these targeting vectors (ΔF508Neo) contains sequences designed to delete the phenylalanine at amino acid position 508 of CFTR. Another targeting vector (G27XDTNeo) contains sequences designed to introduce an early stop codon into the CFTR gene such that no CFTR is produced. These two targeting vectors were used to transfect White Romney fibroblast cells. Donor sheep oocytes were collected for use in somatic cell nuclear transfer (scNT) with the two genetically modified cell lines. Embryos produced from scNT were transferred to recipient ewes which resulted in the birth of 11 ΔF508 heterozygous lambs and 3 G27XDT heterozygous lambs

Män som... : En narrativ analys av manlighet och genus i serietidningen 91:anBergqvist, Emma January 2023 (has links)
The Swedish series magazine 91:an has been around since the 1950’s. Before the series had its own magazine it was published in other journals, thus making it one of the oldest still active series published in Sweden. The series' old age makes it possible to follow the characters’ development over time. However this paper will only discuss 91:an magazines from the 1980’s to today, due to style changes which resulted in the series often becoming longer, that in turn led to the characters becoming more multifaceted. This change makes it easier to compare the characters throughout the chosen period of time. The main plot takes place in the fictional Klackamo regiment. The regiment is a male dominated arena with many different hierarchical relationships between the conscripts, the officers and some other frequently recurring characters. The analysis will examine those relationships. The source material is analyzed through narrative theory and intersectionality. 25 magazines, 5 from every decade from the 80’s until today are chosen at random. The primary results reveal that some things such as the magazine’s usage of popular cultural references and time indicators have increased since the turn of the millennium. Since the series actively takes distance from depicting present events to keep the reader in the 91:an universe, an increased amount of popular cultural references and time indicators could remove the reader from the 91:an universe and consequently taking the reader closer to reality. Other things have remained the same such as how the magazine approaches gender norms in relationships and how the men in the series often express emotions through anger and violence. The purpose of this essay is to point out some of the stereotypes and norms regarding men that are depicted in the series and identify if and how they have been affected during the time 1980 - 2023.

Disinhibition of an Operant ResponseBrimer, Charles 07 1900 (has links)
A total of 320 rats were employed in experiments analyzing the phenomenon of disinhibition of an operant bar-pressing response. The parameters explored were type of "inhibitory operation" preceding the test for disinhibition, and modality, duration, directionality, intensity, and prior exposure to the disinhibiting stimulus. The disinhibition phenomenon was highly general, occurring under almost all test conditions. The phenomenon, however, could be produced during extinction only when probability of response was at a "critical" low, but greater than zero, level. When animals with the same "critical" response probability were tested during acquisition, before bar-pressing had reached a higher level of probability,
disinhibition never occurred. Theories attempting to account for both the inhibiting and disinhibiting effects of extraneous stimuli were examined. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
