Characterizing the Effects of Noise and Domain Distance in Analogous Design

Idea generation is one of the major initial steps of the design process. Designers frequently use analogies to explain concepts, predict potential problems, and generate ideas. Analogous design can stimulate idea generation and lead to novelty and creativity. At present, there is little research that explores analogous design under the presence of irrelevant information, 'noise', or the effects of using analogies from semantically distant domains. An "Analogies and Noise" experiment extends previous findings which indicate that the use of two analogues instead of one can enhance analogous transfer. It tests whether this holds true for increased numbers of analogies. This study hypothesizes that analogue transfer improves with increasing number of example analogues and deteriorates under the presence of noise. The experiment evaluated this hypothesis by presenting designers with a design problem and a set of analogues and noise. Improvement was primarily measured by the rate of participants identifying the relevant high level principle (HLP). The results indicate that: (1) recognition of HLPs deteriorates under noise (2) increasing numbers of analogues under noise initially improves HLP recognition; however, once many items are present, designers are overwhelmed and the HLP recognition rate decreases (3) using two analogues is optimal for design and (4) noise cannot be defined as all those items without a functional feature relevant to the problem. A "Distant Domains" pilot experiment explores the use of distant-domain analogies. This study hypothesizes that distant domain analogies lead to more abstraction resulting in more creative designs. The experiment presented participants with a predetermined set of analogues then asked them to solve a problem. The set contained analogies from the problem domain and from a domain of varying distance. The following patterns were observed: (1) the number of emergent features peaked with near-domain analogies and decreased thereafter (2) the mean total number of ideas increased with increasing domain (3) designers deemed analogies from distant domains as 'less useful' and solutions generated using distant domains as 'less effective' and 'less practical'. These trends warrant future experimentation with an increased sample size.

Or, ces applications peuvent servir à exclure et stigmatiser des individus. Cela crée parfois ce qu'on appelle de la discrimination génétique. Nous voulons ici déterminer dans quelle mesure les chartes des droits de la personne canadienne et québécoise protègent les travailleurs contre la discrimination génétique. This uses can serve to exclude and stigmatize the individuals. This sometimes creates what is called the genetic discrimination. The workplace is particularly favorable to see emerging this form of discrimination. We try to determine in what way the human rights charters protect the workers against the genetic discrimination. First, we scrutinize if the struggle against the genetic discrimination is well-suited with the objecti ves of the principles of the non-discrimination. Secondly, we examine if the prohibition of the disability discrimination could prevent the genetic discrimination against the workers. Finally, we try to establish if the genetic characteristics could constitute an analogous ground of discrimination prohibited by the Canadian Charter.

Caracterização do uso do rubídio como marcador de potássio no milho (Zea mays L.) / Characterization of the use of rubidium as a potassium tracer in maize crop (Zea mays L.)

O conhecimento da dinâmica do potássio no sistema solo-planta é importante para entender a disponibilidade desse nutriente as culturas. O uso de isótopos possibilita especificar a quantidade do nutriente recuperada pela planta proveniente do fertilizante. O 42K, isótopo radioativo do potássio, apresenta meia-vida de 12,4 horas o que impossibilita o seu uso em pesquisas relacionadas à eficiência dos fertilizantes. Como alternativa há o Rb que é análogo ao K, tem propriedades químicas semelhantes, e realiza algumas funções do K nas plantas. Entretanto, por não se tratar do mesmo elemento, persiste a dúvida em relação à quantidade de Rb que não prejudique o desenvolvimento das culturas a fim de usá-lo como marcador. Essa pesquisa tem como objetivo identificar as relações de massa entre o K e o Rb em estudos de aproveitamento do nutriente. O experimento foi desenvolvido em casa de vegetação com delineamento experimental em blocos ao acaso e quatro repetições. Para verificação do objetivo estudou-se dois métodos, da substituição de K por Rb e da adição de Rb. No método da substituição foram utilizados os seguintes tratamentos: sem Rb, 10%, 20%, 40%, 50%, 70%, 85% e 100% de Rb; no método de adição utilizou os seguintes tratamentos: sem Rb, 10%, 20%, 40%, 50%, 70%, 85% e 100% de Rb adicionado ao total aplicado de K (150 mg dm-3). Para avaliação dos tratamentos o milho foi conduzido até o estádio V8, ao final do qual determinaram-se atributos relacionados ao desenvolvimento e a fotossíntese, os teores de Rb, de macronutrientes (K, N, P, S, Ca e Mg) e micronutrientes (Mn, Fe, Zn e Cu) na parte aérea e nas raízes da planta. A substituição do K pelo Rb prejudicou o desenvolvimento do milho, sem haver dano à planta na adição. Os teores de nutrientes na parte aérea e nas raízes variaram diferenciadamente em cada método. A eficiência de recuperação do K foi superior à do Rb. O desenvolvimento da planta foi limitado pela substituição de 10% do K por Rb. A adição máxima aceitável de Rb foi 30%, estabelecida pelo decréscimo nos teores de nutrientes. / The knowledge of the potassium dynamics in the soil-plant system is important to understand the nutrient availability in cultures. The use of isotopes allows to specify the amount of nutrient recovered by the plant from the fertilizer. The 42K, radioactive isotope of potassium has a half-life of 12.4 hours, which precludes its use in research related to the efficiency of fertilizers. Alternatively, Rb is analogous to K and has similar chemical properties, thus, it can perform certain K functions in plants. However, because it is not the same element, questions arise regarding the amount of Rb that does not harm the plant development when used for K labeling. This research aims to identify the relationship between the mass of K and Rb in nutrient utilization studies. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in a randomized block design with four replications. Two methods, replacing K by Rb and adding Rb, were used. In the replacement method, the following treatments were used: without Rb, 10%, 20%, 40%, 50%, 70%, 85% and 100% of Rb, and in the addition method: without Rb, 10%, 20%, 40%, 50%, 70%, 85% and 100% of the Rb added to total applied K (150 mg dm-3). O consumo de água pelas plantas se faz necessário para os processos bioquímicos e por consequente para atividades metabólicas celulares. Uma maneira de compreender a dinâmica hídrica das raízes é modelar o sistema por meio de um análogo ao circuito elétrico, que consista basicamente de resistores e capacitores associados. Foi construído um circuito elétrico equivalente, no programa computacional QUCS, que permite modelar e simular o fluxo hídrico na raiz, aplicando leis análogas de Kirchhoff. Dados experimentais para duas espécies de plantas vasculares foram utilizados (trigo e milho) de modo a se estabelecer as fases de simulação, calibração e validação da modelagem. A metodologia utilizada permite aprofundar no detalhamento da raiz de plantas vasculares, ao caracterizar os componentes e as vias de fluxo, e distribuir as funções em componentes na perspectiva de ver emergirem as propriedades fisiológicas dessa estrutura. Foram feitas duas simulações para as raízes do trigo e do milho: uma para o regime estacionário e outra para o regime oscilatório. No sistema estacionário, observa-se uma inversão da supremacia do fluxo apoplástico com relação ao fluxo simplásticotranscelular em um ponto intermediário do córtex, devido à interrupção do fluxo apoplástico pelas estrias de Caspary. No regime oscilatório, observa-se uma defasagem do máximo do sinal em direção à endoderme, isto é, a defasagem aumenta com a distância da fonte senoidal. A modelagem explicita um comportamento esperado devido à resistência ao fluxo e aos tempos característicos de carga e descarga dos capacitores, porém, não descritos na literatura. / The basic functions of the root are to sustain the plant and absorb water and nutrients from the soil. The water consumption of the plant is necessary for biochemical processes and consequent to cellular metabolic activities. One way to understand the fluid dynamics of roots is to model the system by means of an analogue to the electric circuit, consisting primarily of resistors and capacitors associated. An equivalent electrical circuit was built in QUCS computer program, which allows modeling and simulating the fluid flow in the root, applying analogous Kirchhoff laws. Experimental data for two species of vascular plants (wheat and corn) were used in order to establish the stages of simulation, calibration and validation of modeling. The methodology allows further in detailing the root of vascular plants, to characterize the components and flow paths, and distribute the functions of components in the prospect of emerging physiological properties of this structure. One for the steady state and other for the oscillatory regime: two simulations for the roots of wheat and corn were made. In the stationary system, there is a reversal of the supremacy of apoplastic flow with respect to symplastictransmembrane flow at an intermediate point of the cortex due to the interruption of the flow through the apoplastic streaks of Caspary. In the oscillatory regime, there is a lag of the maximum signal toward the endoderm, ie, the gap increases with the distance from the sinusoidal source. The explicit modeling an expected due to the flow resistance and the characteristic times of charging and discharging of the capacitors behavior, however, is not described in the literature.

Isolation of Bioactive Marine Natural Products and Bioinspired Synthesis of Fused Guanidinic Tricyclic Analogues / Isolement de produits naturels marins bioactifs et synthèse bioinspirés des analogues guanidiniques ricycliques fusionnés

Le travail réalisé dans cette thèse a consisté en deux parties principales; la première partie a été centrée sur l’isolement de métabolites marins bioactifs, en mettant l'accent sur l'utilisation de techniques intégrés et modernes pour l'exploration chimique de deux éponges marines sélectionnées pour leurs activités cytotoxiques et antiinfectieuses. L’inhibition du Quorum Sensing pour explorer les activités antibiofilms a été utilisée. L’étude chimique de la première éponge Monanchora sp., a permis l'isolement et l'identification de vingt-huit composés guanidiniques et polycycliques, dont onze nouveaux. De la deuxième éponge Suberea ianthelliformi, nous avons pu isolé et identifié douze métabolites de type bropmotyrosines incluant huit alcaloïdes nouveaux dont les tétrabromotyrosines de la famille psammaplysenes. Les composés isolés ont été évalués pour leurs activités biologiques, en particulier pour les activités ciblées, cytotoxicité et inhibition de quorum sensing (QSI). De nombreux composés se sont avérés cytotoxiques sur plusieurs lignées cellulaires cancéreuses à des concentrations allant du micro au nanomolaire, en particulier les produits pentacycliques de la famille des crambescidines 800 et 814 alcaloïdes (CI50 = 4.5 nM). Ces résultats sont présentés à la fin du manuscrit. La deuxième partie concerne la synthèse bioinspirée du fragment guanidinique et tricyclique central des crambescidines et batzelladines. La synthèse totale de deux analogues tricycliques de merobatzelladine B a été ainsi réalisée. La stratégie de synthèse est essentiellement basée sur une réaction bioinspirée et inspiré de la stratégie de Robinson lors de la synthèse de la tropénone. / The work achieved in this thesis consisted two main parts; the first part was centered to the l marine natural product program, with emphasis on using modern and integrated techniecs for the chemical exploration of two promising marine sponges for the discovery of new marine secondary metaboilites along with their biological evalutions as anticancers, antibiotics, antifouling and antibiofilms. The chemical exploration of the first marine sponge Monanchora sp., afforded the isolation and identification of twenty-eight compounds, included eleven new compounds. The second marine sponge Suberea ianthelliformis, we were able to isolate and identify twelve marine metabolites included four known compounds and eight new tetrabromo tyrosine alkaloids related to psammaplysenes family. The isolated compounds were evaluated for their biological activities, in particular for cytotoxicity, quorum sensing inhibition (QSI) and antibiofilms. Almost of the isolated compounds exhibited interesting high cytotoxic activity against several cancer cell lines ranging from micro to nanomolar scale, in particular the isolated pentacyclic crambescidin 800 and 814 guanidine alkaloids showed strong cytotoxicity with IC50 = 4.5 nM. The second part was concerning with the bioinspired synthesis of the central tricyclic guanidinic fragments of the polycyclic marine alkaloids, batzelladines/crambescidins, in addition to the total synthesis of two stereoisomeric analogues of merobatzelladine B tricyclic alkaloid. Successfully, we had achieved a four steps short stratgy to access the tricyclic guanidinic portion of the batzelladine alkaloids, based on a bioinspired Robinson multicomponant reaction.

Se parece com Nelson é vida ou A Psicanálise como ela é...: narrativas de uma investigação psicanalítica

This text is an investigative study that, under the interpretative lens of psychoanalysis method, puts in question the concepts of psychoanalytic interpretation and psychic reality, which is made from an analogy established between the creation movements in Nelson Rodrigues Literature and those from the psychoanalytic productions. The reading of A vida como ela é..., series of tales written by Nelson Rodrigues to Última Hora newspaper, between 1951 and 1961, turned out to be a strong theoretical and affective experience. When he produces, Nelson creates realities and a particular form of man the Brazilian. He presents tragedies and dramas, to which, untangles the ululant obvious which sustain them. In this sense, I deducted that he would fulfill, with methodological rigour, the interpretative method demands by disrupting the course, as proposed by Fabio Herrman, which means the creation of a meaning that goes beyond the established routinely. Shocked by the possibility of a writer/artist fulfilling the demands of the psychoanalytic method, I presumed if Nelson Rodrigues was not an exemplary psychoanalyst. In the face of this agony and the position taken to see/read Nelson Rodrigues production as psychoanalytic, I needed dialogues with Science, Arts, in a deeper way with Literature, to illuminate the field and place of Psychoanalysis in my universe, and answer the nodal points which were imposed to the investigation: what Nelson Rodrigues produces of knowledge about the human condition can be equivalent to the knowledge coming from the psychoanalytic lens?; what is the difference between the analytical process and the creative writers process, considering the fictional character which unfold from them?; and Would Nelson Rodrigues be a psychoanalyst to be followed on the basis of his creation way and the disruption promoted by his action? More than an exercise of theoretical construction, this investigation, organized in narratives which store the seal of processed search way, which is, questioner and interpretative or as I call investicrativa, brings the movement of particular reinvention to Psychoanalysis. Looking to the keyhole, I encountered the character of mistake and uncertainness which constitutes life and also the psychoanalytic art. Facing the uncertain, it was necessary to be tragic and artist to dare a draft of my invention as a psychoanalyst and, from this place, produce a man and reality, in the transferencial dialogue with Nelson Rodrigues in A Carta, in the theories articulated in O Texto, or yet, in the appropriation of a clinical case through the tale A Deprimida, path which made it possible for me the suspension and expression of desire. In this way, two points are apprehended in this investigation, which ratify the analogy between Psychoanalysis and Literature, as suggested in Theory of the analogous, once both create meanings, not real, but possibilities of meanings, and the place that writing assumes in both fields. / Trata-se de um estudo investigativo que, sob a lente interpretante do método psicanalítico, coloca em questão os conceitos de interpretação psicanalítica e realidade psíquica, a partir de uma analogia estabelecida entre os movimentos de criação na Literatura de Nelson Rodrigues e aqueles oriundos das produções psicanalíticas. A leitura de A vida como ela é..., série de contos escrita por Nelson Rodrigues, para o jornal Última Hora, entre os anos de 1951 e 1961, caracterizou-se como uma forte experiência teoricafetiva. Ao produzir, Nelson, cria realidades e uma forma particular de homem o brasileiro. Apresenta tragédias e dramas, para os quais, destrincha o óbvio ululante que as sustentam. Neste sentido deduzi que ele cumpriria, com rigor metodológico, as exigências do método interpretativo por ruptura de campo, tal como propõe Fabio Herrmann, a saber, a criação de um sentido, para além ou aquém, do já estabelecido rotineiramente. Estremecido pela possibilidade de um escritor/artista atender as exigências do método psicanalítico, hipotetizei se não seria Nelson Rodrigues um psicanalista exemplar. Diante desta agonia sentida e da postura assumida de ver/ler a produção rodrigueana como psicanalítica, necessitei de diálogos com a Ciência, Arte, de modo aprofundado com a Literatura, para iluminar o próprio campo e lugar da Psicanálise no meu universo, e, responder as questões nodais que à investigação se impunham: o que Nelson Rodrigues produz de saber sobre a condição humana pode ser equivalente ao saber advindo da chamada lente psicanalítica?; qual é a diferenciação entre o fazer analítico e o dos escritores criativos, tendo-se em vista o caráter ficcional que deles se desdobra?; e seria Nelson Rodrigues um psicanalista, a ser seguido, com base na sua forma de criar e pela ruptura que sua ação promove? Mais que o exercício de uma construção teórica, esta investigação, organizada em narrativas que guardam o selo da forma de busca processada, qual seja, interrogante-interpretante ou investicrativa, traz o movimento de reinvenção particular à Psicanálise. Ao olhar pelo buraco da fechadura deparei-me com o caráter do engano e da incerteza que constitui tanto a vida, como o próprio ofício psicanalítico. Diante do incerto foi preciso ser trágico e artista para ousar um esboço de minha invenção como psicanalista e, desse lugar, produzir homem e realidade, seja no diálogo transferencial com Nelson Rodrigues presente em A Carta, nas prototeorias articuladas em O Texto, ou ainda, na apropriação de um caso clínico por meio do conto A Deprimida, via que me possibilitou suspensão e expressão do desejo. Dessa forma, apreende-se nesta investigação dois pontos que ratificam a analogia entre Psicanálise e Literatura, como proposto pela Teoria do Análogo, quer seja por ambas criarem sentidos, não de verdade, mas de possibilidades de sentidos, ou pelo lugar que a escrita assume nesses dois campos. / Mestre em Psicologia Aplicada

When will hybrid technologies dominate the heavy-duty vehicle market? : Forecasting Using Innovation Diffusion Models

Hybrid-electric technologies have recently been introduced into the market for heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs). However, challenging an established technology with a new and untried technology is difficult, also under the best conditions. Forecasting is a vital tool in product portfolio management, since it provides guidance on how much resources a firm should allocate on new innovative projects and products and when and where to enter the market. Therefore, this thesis forecasts the market penetration of hybrid HDVs in Europe by usage of innovation diffusion models – based on three different market scenarios assuming no, some and considerable incentives or legislative CO2 for HDVs. Hybrid-electric, hydraulic hybrid and flywheel hybrid vehicles are considered and an analogical approach is used based on sales data for radial tyres, disc brakes and anti-lock braking systems. The result from a non-linear regression analysis indicated that innovation diffusion models of mixed influence are capable of predicting future market demand, not only of hybrid HDVs, but also of other HDVs with new innovative technologies or solutions. Therefore, it was suggested that innovation diffusion modeling should be a standard tool in the strategic planning of a HDV firm’s all new innovative products. All market scenarios resulted in a rather low diffusion speed of hybrid HDVs during the first ten years, but the speed increased then rapidly during the next ten years such that 40-50 percent of the HDV market was penetrated in 2030. In the most hybrid-friendly scenario, the market was nearly fully penetrated after 50 years since the first introduction in 2010, while in the least hybrid-friendly scenario additional ten years was needed to fully penetrate the HDV market. The forecasts may be affected by possible pre-diffusion, the emergence of a dominant design or the diffusion acceleration effect. One of the major challenges of using innovation diffusion models for sales forecasting of hybrid HDVs, was to find appropriate and sufficient analogous sales data. Therefore, Thomas (1985) analogous approach was further developed to be more focused on finding analogous sales data from internal, external or public sources.
