It is observed, with the curse of history, that the social movements were an active subject in the process of construction of the protection of the environment, contributing so that forms of control of environmental degradation were executed through several types of norms and/or events. Karla Maria Rocha Saraiva 22 September 2011 (has links)
This study was aimed at analyzing the educational potential of alternative practical activities in the development of student ethical and environmental awareness and student learning in biology, focusing in the process of environmental awareness. Research was divided into three stages: preparation of a book of alternative practical activities, an environmental awareness workshop and completion of five experimental activities. The object of this research was the E.E.F.M. Antonio Bezerra, located on the Antonio Bezerra neighborhood, in the city of Fortaleza (Ce), Brazil, with a sampling of two classes of high school (first year) students. The data were subjected to quantitative analysis, which assessed the biological learning and qualitative analysis, which evaluated the environmental awareness acquired by the student. Regarding the first aspect, it was observed a knowledge increase (among the students) on the subject of vitamins. As for awareness, we used the criterion of categorization of content, where the categories listed were: definition of critical Environmental Ethics (EE), social inequality and environmental responsibility. In these three aspects, it was found that students had, originally, fragmented views of EE, with an uncompromising approach to the social, economic and political reality inhabited by human society. After raising the awareness of the students (environmental workshop and alternative practical activities) some relevant changes developed, showing a more socially and environmentally aware point of view, emphasizing the coexistence with nature and beings (including humans) living in contact with it. The solidarity and respect for the feelings of the others became evident in the speech of the students, which reflected increased care and responsibility towards the environment.

Family Socialisation & Construction of Environmental Meaning : A study of family units as socialisation agents in which environmental discourses are created through the interactions of family members / Family Socialisation & Construction of Environmental Meaning : A study of family units as socialisation agents in which environmental discourses are created through the interactions of family members

Cassola, Victoria January 2022 (has links)
This thesis investigates how environmental meaning is constructed within families, considered as units of socialisation, and what role family members play in it. Family socialisation is a dynamic moment in which family members interact and generate meanings, values, beliefs and habits. Drawing on theories of the social construction of reality, symbolisation and symbolic interactionism, the thesis examines sustainable symbols and shared beliefs among parents and young adult children, considered relevant both for understanding how the family social group feels towards the environment and for understanding what motivations can be found behind the family's environmental habits. By conducting semi-structured interviews with parents and young adult children, recurring patterns of sustainable meanings and symbols were identified. The results show that the family context is regarded as the first site of environmental awareness and education, where sustainability discourses take the form of open conversations focused on individual behaviour and family values. In these conversation, parents and young adult children cover specific roles that dynamically contribute to the creation of environmental meanings. The thesis is considered relevant in that it creates a solid understanding of both the form that environmental discourse takes within families and the intrinsic motivations that justify this form, so that more conscious environmental communication and education can be developed.

Modemedvetenhet versus miljömedvetenhet : En kvalitativ studie om influencers påverkan på unga kvinnors identitetsskapande / Fashion awareness versus environmental awareness : A qualitative study about influencers' impact on young womens identity formation.

Hedihn, Fanny, Angervall, Pernilla January 2020 (has links)
A paradigm shift has taken place in identity formation as the society7 is moving towards to be more digitized. Previous research shows that young people use social media and its opinion leaders, called influencers, to a large extent as a tool to create their own identity. One way to express identity is through clothing and today the fast fashion industry has digital marketing strategies in shape of collaborations with influencers to reach consumers. Young women are, above all, the target group that both spends time and is most affected by social media, which makes them easily fall for the consumerism of clothing that influencers encourage. The fashion industry is an industry that has an extensive climate impact where emissions of greenhouse gas, chemicals and the use of resources have major negative consequences for the world. Statistics specifically indicate that young women have a high environmental awareness in form of strong sustainable values, while this group in the meantime also having a tendency to be affected to consume. The purpose of this study is to investigate young women's identity formation via Instagram and how they position themselves in their identity formation regarding both clothing consumption and environmental awareness. This study was conducted in accordance with a qualitative approach where the data material was obtained through interviews with four focus groups. The method has been chosen to study how the respondents argue while being a part of a group. The data has been analyzed through a developed analytical model based on a thematization of selected identity theories. The study's findings and conclusions indicates that young women are generally unplanned and materialistic in their clothing consumption despite a general or high environmental awareness. However, a greater interest in fashion tends to lead to increased environmental awareness in the consumption of clothing. The perception of the importance of clothing for identity formation affects how different patterns of consumption develop where those with a high opinion are less materialistic and impulsive and vice versa. Influencers' impact on young women’s identity formation vary and is based on the intention to follow a profile, where those who intend to follow fashion-based profiles are more affected than those who follow lifestyle influencers. This study is written in swedish.

The Impact of Influencer Marketing on Second hand Market : A study on how to increase the participation in the second hand market for apparel

Stefanska, Beata, Farhadi, Dena January 2020 (has links)
Introduction: The second hand market for apparel is a good alternative for making sustainable purchases, given that it does not contribute to textile waste to the same extent as the fast fashion industry. Consumers are aware of the current environmental issues, however they do not always act according to their knowledge. Therefore, this study is devoted to examine the possibility to increase the consumer’s participation in the second hand market for apparel, as a solution to the problem of textile waste. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how influencer marketing can be used in order to increase the participation in the second hand market for apparel. Further, this paper examines the impact of the factors of price, environmental awareness and quality on sale and purchase of second hand apparel. Method: To implement this study both quantitative and qualitative methodologies have been used. For the quantitative part surveys have been constructed, to get a broader view of the consumer behavior. Furthermore, interviews with different consumers were held for the qualitative part, to get a deeper insight in the consumer behavior. The collected data has later on been a support for the analysis. Conclusion: This study shows that influencer marketing can indeed increase the participation on the second hand market for apparel, by increasing environmental awareness among the consumers. Moreover, the most influential factors are quality when purchasing, price when selling and environmental awareness both when purchasing and selling.

Unpacking Fast Fashion E-tail Returns : A Qualitative study of Environmental Awareness in Return Behaviors of Fast Fashion E-tail

Nässlander, Veronica, Björkegren, Lisa January 2023 (has links)
Online consumption and e-tail have clearly increased in recent years, largely sinceaccessibility is an advantage that consumers notice as beneficial. The availability of e-tail has also received clear environmental disadvantages, as returns are an inevitable part of online orders. The increased return rate results in large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions, something customer groups with environmental awareness has perceived. Which leads to the purpose of this research, to provide information about environmentally conscious consumers, their behaviors, and intentions towards e-tail returns. Theinformation collected, can be of great significance to fast fashion companies, e-tail platforms, and decision-makers, to guide them in developing effective strategies aimed at promoting sustainable consumption behaviors and mitigating the detrimental environmental effects associated with returns. The empirical findings were gathered through qualitative research, where semi-structured interviews were conducted on 15 Swedish e-tail consumers in the ages 24-44. The empirical evidence was analysed with a Thematic Analysis and discussed in context with the secondary data to strengthen the collected empirical evidence. The conclusion of the thesis portray that the participating environmentally conscious consumers have a predominant insight regarding the environmental impact that occurs when returning e-tail purchases. The research shows that environmental awareness is considered when ordering and returning garments, however, to varying extents, which leads to inconsistent actions. The participants have more environmental thinking regarding the product, production, delivery and consumption i.e., the buying process that directly affects the participants. However, conflicts are identified in several aspects such as that environmental communication from e-tail companies is difficult to understand, economic aspects and the conflict of the desire for certain garments. In summary, the results show that the return process is not prioritized to the same extent as the buying process, because of indirect influence or lack of knowledge of the participants. The findings indicate that there is not always a harmony between the perceptions and actions of the participants.

Mississippi Teachers' Environmental Awareness and Usage of the Project Learning Tree Curriculum within Traditional Classrooms

Carroll, Kimberly Nicole 14 August 2015 (has links)
Project Learning Tree (PLT) is an international environmental education (EE) program designed for educators working with children and youth. In Mississippi, roughly 700 educators are trained yearly in using PLT curricula; however, how and if teachers use knowledge gained from these workshops remains unknown. This study addresses the environmental awareness and use of PLT curricula in traditional classroom of primary and secondary teachers in Mississippi. Using PLT participant survey data, individuals trained during the years 2009-2013 were surveyed using Qualtrics Survey Software. Mississippi teachers appear to have ecocentric worldviews, above average environmental knowledge, and have incorporated PLT lessons into their classroom curricula. Teachers’ subject areas appear not to affect their usage of PLT, while motivation for incorporating and attending PLT workshops appears to have minor effects. Results of this study can be used to increase the efficiency of PLT workshops, as well as mitigate barriers to incorporating PLT into classrooms.

Analyzing the impact of marine protected areas on coastal zones : A case-study of Addo Elephant National Park Marine Protected Area, South Africa

Obbink, Laura Elana Babette January 2023 (has links)
The ocean is, with its extraordinary ability to regulate the climate and absorb carbon dioxide, a vital ecosystem for all life on the planet. Moreover, the ocean is highly important for coastal communities as a source of income and nutrition, and as a consequence of increasing dependence it is becoming more significant to mitigate the effects of these anthropogenic activities on the ocean and its resources. Marine protected areas (MPAs) are one of the policies implemented in order to diminish these impacts through the protection of high biodiversity areas by safeguarding nursing grounds for fish species, help remove excessive pollutants and nutrients and through the provision of more sustainable tourism and recreation opportunities. This thesis explores how MPAs influence coastal zones by assessing the environmental and economic impacts. Addo Elephant National Park Marine Protected Area (ANEP MPA) has, due to the complexity of this social-ecological system, been used as a case study. The thesis will help relevant stakeholders to gain an understanding of the current progress being made and how the effectiveness of the MPA can be further improved. Furthermore, this thesis could be used as an example on how to balance environmental and economic development agendas in coastal communities. During this research, a case study design was used, where data was collected through ten in-depth interviews. During the interviews, the participants’ perceptions where gathered on how the establishment of the MPA has impacted the marine life, the local activities (marine tourism, fishing and ship-to-ship bunkering (STSB)) and the local environmental awareness. Afterwards, the data was analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings have shown that the establishment of the MPA has mixed results on the marine life and the local activities, which has led to a deficiency in the effectiveness of Addo Elephant National Park MPA. The local environmental awareness appeared to be too small, but whether or not the MPA contributed to growing awareness could not be said from the data alone. The data concluded that this lack of awareness led to a misuse of ocean resources, which aggravated due to a lack of enforcement. Furthermore, the overall enforcement within the MPA should be improved to enlarge the effectiveness of Addo Elephant National Park MPA.
