Manoel de Barros, poet who debuted on Brazilian literature in 1930, has in the poetic image and in metalanguage the main strength points of his poetry. More than that, we emphasize that there is in his work a tensional interlink between the image and the metalinguistic spaces, once the poet merges these language spaces, making the poem some sort of support for the criticism to the extent that he injects in the poetic discourse his critical thought. We notice, also, that the excessive and combined repetition of some poetic elaboration procedures creates a macrostructure that characterizes the language built by the poet, as we consider the fusion of figurative and metapoetic spaces as a predominant procedure of such structure. To this end, we propose a study that focuses on the functions and effects, generated by the repetition, that singles out the poetry of Barros. Such study aims, still, to systematize a Poetics, once the language turns out to be configured as a palimpsestic code, marked by the coexistence of the critical and creative activities, as well as by the repetition of punctual ideas about the poetic. To do such, we start from a thorough investigation of a selection of poems from the complete works of the author, and establish a broad dialogue with the fundamentals of the lyric modernity.

It is true that there is a pattern in Barros poetry, which says that there is a wire inner conductor that concludes all the verses in the same way. This stylistic pattern is what we have in this study as "poetic formula." In Manoel de Barros, the metaphor is given by A) fragmentation of phrases, B) chaotic assembly lines, C) semantic break, D) breach of expectation through the illogicality, and E) absence of causal similarity between the elements brought into relation. The metaphor in Barros is generally the manifesto of the service of man's dehumanization of the complaint and the objectification of the world. The thematic strategies of poetic composition in Barros are subjugated to the metaphor, like childhood and nature, for example. The peculiar mode of composition of metaphors in the poet's what gives it its style, it is the flagship of his poetic formula, hence its importance. Thus, this research aims to investigate the metaphors manoelinas the elements that form his poetic formula.

Jose Dario Vargas Parra 10 May 2017 (has links)
The present work, Situations: from Technology to interaction between Art and Politics, aims to present ways through which aesthetic experiences in urban spaces generate resistance acts capable of an effective expression within the political practice. It is constituted by aesthetic experiments via poetic operations which resort to teleinformatics technologies. The hypothesis is that the aesthetic efficacy of such experiments, which use teleinformatics devices, makes evident the political-ideological potentialities contained in such media, which have been more commonly used in support of the Order and for the enhanced reproduction of capitalist production. In this context, the concept of \'situation\' is of much consequence for poetic experimentation, it expresses the key Idea of the Situationist International (SI) movement, which consists in the adoption of an \'experimental behavior\' as an affective intervention procedure in the conventional everyday urban environment, targeting its transformation into \'a higher passional quality\'. In Situations: from Technology to interaction between Art and Politics, stemming from the creation of a set of situations, we attempt to build a poetics of subversion, whose central objective is instituting a favorable aesthetic field for new community web experiences, open to collective participation, to dialogue and to the change of certain modes of production. The poetic operations carried out also intend to contribute to the production of interdisciplinary knowledge about the political domination devices, in the stage of capitalist development in which the production of cultural goods has become fundamental to the very amplified reproduction of capital itself, by means of the construction of two situations, \'Intransference\' and \'Tactical Unit of Active Communication - TUAcT, along with other poetic experiments, migrating works which, albeit not articulated with the situations, keep with them a close familiarity.

Its internal structure is based on the dialogue between the aesthetic definition of the literary work of art, its reception and aesthetic effect and the correlation with the Dostoevskian work. It proposes a hermeneutic and phenomenological approach, with the theoretical support of Edmund Husserl and assisted by Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Mikel Dufrenne and Hans- Georg Gadamer. An analysis of his poetics is also made in the light of aesthetic reception and effect, with the theoretical support of Hans Robert Jauss and other researchers of the reception aesthetics, Wolfgang Iser, Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht and Karlheinz Stierle. The dissonant bias is addressed in the thematic composition of the work, in the structure of the characters and in the internal economy of the narrative. There are several critical looks on the work, highlighting Mikhail Bakhtin, Joseph Frank, Luiz Felipe Pondé and Luigi Pareyson.

A Rat-Shaped Tear ; and, Beyond the other : animals in the poetry of D.H. Lawrence, Elizabeth Bishop and Marianne Moore

MacRae, Marianne January 2018 (has links)
The poems in A Rat-Shaped Tear consider wide-ranging ideas of otherness using character and voice. Through misdirection, understatement and unexpected imagery I confront ideas of animal and female otherness in playful ways as a means of subverting traditional impressions of both. The othering effects of grief are also examined in poems that reflect on bereavement and mortality. Human-animal interaction is used to further explore the effects of death and disappointment, though overtones of cartoonish extravagance, dark humour and the surreal temper the more serious themes of loss, disillusionment and loneliness that recur within the collection. In the accompanying thesis, I focus on the work of three poets - D.H Lawrence, Marianne Moore and Elizabeth Bishop - each of whom confront animal otherness in their work. Through close examinations of their individual works, I explore the differences in approach to human-animal interaction, and the ways in which these poets draw meaning from animal otherness. It is suggested that although they engage with the concept using varied poetic techniques, they are drawn together by the intimations of spiritual transcendence that permeate each of their animal poetics.

Trieste e a poética da vida: proposta de tradução de poemas de Umberto Saba / Trieste and the poetics of life: proposition of translation of Umberto Saba\'s poems

Figueredo, Dheisson Ribeiro 16 March 2017 (has links)
This research arose out of the will of spreading the presence of Umberto Sabas poetry in Brazil. We decided, thus, to select and translate some of his poems, using as a choice criterion the study of the poetical work of the italian poet out of the most frequent approach: the relation between his poetic persona and the city of Trieste. We have chosen this framing because we believe it enables a more embracing view of the work of the writer, since, from that relation, we can study many other important questions that may guide us to the comprehension of his poetry, specially those questions engendered in what we name here poetic of the life. With the expression poetic of the life, we seek to make a trend in Sabas poetry more evident: the openness to what he calls calda vita (warm life), the life realized in all its variety, including those moments of suffer and pain. In such path, we study the relation subject/city having as a north the interrelationship between the inner subject and the world matter, and from then, we establish a comparison among some features of Sabas and Baudelaires poetry, but also Pascolis, Leopardis and the Crepusculares. We also talk about the theme of the visual sense, of the desire, drives and memory, which are intertwined in the relation self/city. We talk, moreover, about the main formal aspects that characterize the poetry of the Italian, as, among others, the narrativity and the prosaicism, which are connected to what the critics call Sabas realism (the representation of scenes, facts and daily characters.)

Poetic language and subalternity in Yvonne Vera's butterfly burning and the stone virgins.

Kostelac, Sofia Lucy 28 February 2007 (has links)
Student Number : 9803321X - MA Dissertation - School of Literature and Language Studies - Faculty of Humanities / The primary aim of this dissertation is to trace the ways in which Yvonne Vera’s final two novels, Butterfly Burning and The Stone Virgins, provide a discursive space for the enunciation of subaltern histories, which have been silenced in dominant socio-political discourse. I argue that it is through the deployment of ‘poetic language’ that Vera’s prose is able to negotiate the voicing of these suppressed narratives. In exploring these questions, I endeavour to locate Vera’s texts within the theoretical debates in postcolonial scholarship which question the ethical limitations of representing oppressed subjects in the Third World, as articulated by Gayatri Spivak, in particular. Following Spivak’s claim that subalternity is effaced in hegemonic discourse, I focus on the ways in which Vera’s inventive prose works to bring the figure of the subaltern back into signification. In order to elucidate how this dynamic operates in both novels, I employ Julia Kristeva’s psycholinguistic theory of ‘poetic language’. I argue that Kristeva’s understanding of literary practice as a transgressive modality, which is able to unsettle the silencing mechanisms of dominant monologic discourse, critically illuminates the subversive value of Vera’s fictional style for marginalised subaltern narratives.

Teaching with the End in Mind: A Teacher's Life History as a Legacy of Educational Leaders

Ward, Daryl Adam 31 October 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to understand the life history of a female teacher by examining her beliefs about leaving a teaching legacy and by analyzing the narratives of four educational leaders as they reflect on the generative behaviors of this teacher. The research questions guiding this study were: (a) What elements of this teacher's life history contributed to creating a legacy of educational leaders? (b) What are the perspectives of the educational leaders impacted by this teacher as they relate to crafting an educational legacy? (c) How do the life stories of the teacher and educational leaders intersect to reveal narrative resonance - the ability of stories to interact in such a way that they influence other stories? A review of relevant literature examined legacy creation or generativity. In addition, this study critiqued scholarship that extends narrative research approaches, specifically, fictional research texts. Since fictional research products can be catalysts for reflection and discussion, the final chapter of this study is presented as a fictionalized research-narrative that emerged from analysis of the data. The data in this study included interview texts, participant artwork, reflections from the participant's journal, excerpts from the researcher's journal, and poetry written both by the participant and the researcher. The data were analyzed by using open and focused coding, employing the constant comparison process, and through artifact analysis. The data analysis of this qualitative study resulted in specific findings. First, the main participant demonstrated generative traits contributing to a legacy of educational leaders. Her compassion for all students, her passion for teaching/learning, her content knowledge, and her flexibility in the classroom all manifested themselves in the lives of the educational leaders participating in this study. Additionally, the narratives from the participant demonstrated narrative resonance, Stories, it seems, have their own legacies.
