Information Needs of Art Museum Visitors: Real and Virtual

Kravchyna, Victoria 12 1900 (has links)
Museums and libraries are considered large repositories of human knowledge and human culture. They have similar missions and goals in distributing accumulated knowledge to society. Current digitization projects allow both, museums and libraries to reach a broader audience, share their resources with a variety of users. While studies of information seeking behavior, retrieval systems and metadata in library science have a long history; such research studies in museum environments are at their early experimental stage. There are few studies concerning information seeking behavior and needs of virtual museum visitors, especially with the use of images in the museums' collections available on the Web. The current study identifies preferences of a variety of user groups about the information specifics on current exhibits, museum collections metadata information, and the use of multimedia. The study of information seeking behavior of users groups of museum digital collections or cultural collections allows examination and analysis of users' information needs, and the organization of cultural information, including descriptive metadata and the quantity of information that may be required. In addition, the study delineates information needs that different categories of users may have in common: teachers in high schools, students in colleges and universities, museum professionals, art historians and researchers, and the general public. This research also compares informational and educational needs of real visitors with the needs of virtual visitors. Educational needs of real visitors are based on various studies conducted and summarized by Falk and Dierking (2000), and an evaluation of the art museum websites previously conducted to support the current study.

Ramsey, Priscilla W., Cathelyn, James, Gugliotta, Beverly, Glenn, L. Lee 01 January 1999 (has links)
Studies have addressed the visitation needs of visitors and patients and the impact of visitation policies on nurses, but few studies compare the level of satisfaction between visitors and nurses when visitation policies change. The objectives of this study were to investigate whether a more liberal intensive care unit visitation policy satisfactorily met the needs and expectations of visitors and nurses. © 1999 Lippincott Williams and Wilkins, Inc.

Anpassa sig efter anpassningarna : En studie av tillgänglighet vid museum och besöksupplevelsen för individer med nedsatt rörelseförmåga.

Pettersson, Sara January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to understand how museums make their establishment accessible, if there are any obstacles in their accessibility and in that case what effects this can cause. The thesis examines accessibility at seven museums in Stockholm by participatory observation area with focus on the visitor experience for wheelchair users. The thesis also investigates whether lack of accessibility and inclusion had any possible effect on the visitor experience by means of interviews and content analysis of the accessibility information provided on the museums' websites and annual reports on what measures have been taken by the museum to improve accessibility for people with disabilities.  The results from all seven investigated museums demonstrated that physical accessibility was taken into account but to a certain extent, there have been lifts, ramps, accessible entrances and accessibility-adapted toilets. There were also some positive aspects of accessibility that transcended the most basic accessibility guidelines. Obstacles were identified during all seven observations and these mainly related to exclusionary design of the exhibitions, which in turn affected the visitor experience negatively. The interviews showed that the informants had experienced obstacles at the specified museums and also other museums. In summary, it can be stated that all aspects of accessibility affect the visitor experience, even if the overall experience is positive. Obstacles in accessibility can have negative effects both on the visitor experience but also individually with a negative impact on feelings of independence and/or belonging. The museums' annual reports and the accessibility information from the museums' websites all showed that they are actively working with accessibility, although the extent to which varies. The accessibility information could vary in how well the accessibility adaptations were described and there were few measures reported for people with reduced mobility in the museum’s annual reports. This compiled material demonstrated that there is a knowledge gap regarding accessibility at the museums and together with the material from the interviews and the observations it can be claimed that there are several measures the museums can take to improve accessibility. Finally, a lack of inclusion and accessibility has major effects both on an individual and a societal level. The effects on the individual level have already been mentioned as a negative impact on feelings of independence and belonging but also a negative impact on the self-image. In summary, the effects on the societal level can be claimed to be low levels of participation in people with disabilities and a maintenance of prevailing normative systems that have a negative effect on inclusion and diversity. This is a two-year master’s thesis in Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies.

Stavba v krajině - Winery / Architecture in landscape - Winery

Krajčírová, Barbora January 2009 (has links)
Assignment of the master's thesis is, to design winery, with possibility of accommodation. The aim, is to create a comprehensive urban - architectural project of area, which is based on the use of local resources to support rural, economic and social development in the region of South Moravia. The area is situated on the outskirts of the village Strachotín, which is part of the site Novomlýnska nádrž. The urban concept should attract people, not just domestic, but also international clients, because of the proximity to Austria, Slovakia borders, and because of a good connection to the highway D2. Important was, to create a supporting function_WELLNESS, which complements the lack of capacity of the accommodation and offers services that are not around. A prerequisite, for immediate gripping the concept in the country, is also the existence of several hiking, biking, wine routes which pass through the area. The good thing is a close proximity to water, which I use in eco - energy concept, but also for recreation, relaxation purposes. The core project is the integration of new technologies in wine production, architecture, town planning, to create facilities, operating with minimum power consumption and minimal burden on nature. From the operational point of view, I separated the two ongoing operation of buildings-WELLNESS-located at the bottom of the plot, with access from Sklepní street, and linked with water. -WINERY- with accessing comunication from the existing path, with the possibility to access directly to winery by 3m wide drivable pavement and with beautiful views . Buildings are connected with educational wine route. Visually, the project is built on the use of excavated soil, formed in the mounds, which should symbolize "volumes exserted from the ground" with the metaphorical meaning of interface with nature. Urban and architectural design is in a harmony with the country - respects terrain conditions, using solar energy, and natural material solution that is designed in its crude form.
