<p>Queueing models have been used extensively in the design of call centres. In particular, a queueing model will be used to describe a help desk which is a form of a call centre. The design of the queueing model involves modelling the arrival an service processes of the system.</p><p>Conventionally, the arrival process is assumed to be Poisson and service times are assumed to be exponentially distributed. But it has been proposed that practically these are seldom the case. Past research reveals that the log-normal distribution can be used to model the service times in call centres. Also, services may involve stages/tasks before completion. This motivates the use of a phase-type distribution to model the underlying stages of service.</p><p>This research work focuses on developing statistical models for the overall service times and the service times by job types in a particular help desk. The assumption of exponential service times was investigated and a log-normal distribution was fitted to service times of this help desk. Each stage of the service in this help desk was modelled as a phase in the phase-type distribution.</p><p>Results from the analysis carried out in this work confirmed the irrelevance of the assumption of exponential service times to this help desk and it was apparent that log-normal distributions provided a reasonable fit to the service times. A phase-type distribution with three phases fitted the overall service times and the service times of administrative and miscellaneous jobs very well. For the service times of e-mail and network jobs, a phase-type distribution with two phases served as a good model.</p><p>Finally, log-normal models of service times in this help desk were approximated using an order three phase-type distribution.</p>

If morally arbitrary features (that is, blind brute luck) should have no impact on the distribution of wealth, then the vast inequality and the disparity in life prospects between countries is a moral catastrophe; birthplace is completely based on luck, and yet has an enormous impact on life prospects. I contend that those in affluent countries, who have benefited from the luck of birthplace, ought to work towards a more egalitarian world, in which luck plays as little a role in life prospects as possible.

We report on calculations of smoothed spectral correlations in the twodimensional
Anderson model for weak disorder. As pointed out in (M. Wilkinson,
J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 21, 1173 (1988)), an analysis of the smoothing
dependence of the correlation functions provides a sensitive means of establishing
consistency with random matrix theory. We use a semiclassical approach
to describe these fluctuations and offer a detailed comparison between
numerical and analytical calculations for an exhaustive set of two-point correlation
functions. We consider parametric correlation functions with an external
Aharonov-Bohm flux as a parameter and discuss two cases, namely
broken time-reversal invariance and partial breaking of time-reversal invariance.
Three types of correlation functions are considered: density-of-states,
velocity and matrix element correlation functions. For the values of smoothing
parameter close to the mean level spacing the semiclassical expressions
and the numerical results agree quite well in the whole range of the magnetic
flux.

korrelierte Modell wird mittels der fraktionalen
Momentenmethode im Falle genügend großer Unordnung
exponentieller Abfall der Greenschen Funktion
bewiesen. Anschließend wird daraus für den nicht
korrelierten Spezialfall Anderson Lokalisierung
bewiesen. / This thesis (diploma) is devoted to a correlated
Anderson model. Our model describes short range
single site potentials, whereby negative
correlations become certified. For this correlated
model exponential decay of the Greens' function
is proven in the case sufficient large
disorder according to the fractional moment method.
Subsequently, we prove Anderson localization for
the not correlated special case.

“I just thought you’d like to hear it from me; this is the Face, it's no great Mystery:” understanding authority in Paul Thomas Anderson’s "There Will Be Blood"Hughes, Joel 05 January 2011 (has links)
This thesis explores the question of adaptation in relation to Paul Thomas Anderson's film There Will Be Blood and Upton Sinclair's novel Oil!. I argue, the reason adaptation studies has not necessarily moved beyond its obsession with fidelity is because theorists have neglected to understand a larger, more general, film going audience does not participate in perpetuating the academic theories that would do so. I then examine There Will Be Blood and its self-awareness of its relation to literature and its use of Upton Sinclair's Oil!. Finally, this line of inquiry leads me to conclude that There Will Be Blood disavows a notion of authority that would always make the adapted book better than the film.
