Djurens läkande kraft : En litteraturstudie om äldre patienters erfarenheter av djur som en del av omvårdnaden. / The healing power of animals : A literature study on elderly patient's experiences of animals as a part of nursing.

Wallin, Frida, Johansson, Elin January 2021 (has links)
Background: It is a human right to achieve the best health possible and the elderly care must be focused on the well-being of the elderly and that they have a dignified life. Animals have been shown to have a positive impact in several regards and people are generally open to animal therapy as a form of treatment. In order to be able to perform person-centered care, it is important as a nurse to be sensitive to the patient's wishes so that his or her unique needs are met. Aim: The aim of the literature study was to illustrate older patient's experiences of animals as a part of nursing. Method: The literature study was conducted with an inductive approach. Results: The study is based on ten scientific articles and the results reflects older patient's experiences of animal therapy on a social, mental and physical aspect. The results indicate several positive experiences where increased quality of life, less loneliness and motivation for physical activity amongst other are described under the headings Increased social interaction, Increased well-being and Positive physiological effects. Conclusion: The study showed that further research is required but also that the experience has been positive, which should motivate to use this form of therapy to a greater extent in the future.

Qualitative and Quantitative Method Comparison in Animal-Assisted Therapy Research

Denenholz, Laura 01 January 2011 (has links)
While there have been many presentations and anecdotal evidence in support of AAT, quantitative empirically validated studies are very limited. Without quantitative empirical studies to support the effectiveness of AAT, it remains an unproven complement to traditional physical and psychotherapeutic practices (Kruger & Serpell,2010). The value and importance of non-empirical literature on AAT,including therapists’ observations, various author’s personal experiences, and unstructured interviews with patients, will be explored in the next section. Empirical literature on AAT, including scientific experiment and controlled research studies, will also be addressed. Finally, a conclusion providing ideas for future directions in research in this discipline will be presented.

Canisterapie v České republice s ohledem na odbornou průpravu a kynologickou erudici terapeuta / Animal Assisted Therapy in the Czech Republic in Relation to Professional Background and Dog-Handling Skills of the Therapists

SUDOVÁ, Markéta January 2008 (has links)
In this piece I have attempted to perform descriptive quantitative research in the field of Animal-Assisted Activities and Animal-Assisted Therapies in the Czech Republic. I have placed emphasis on the professional background and dog handling skills of the dog-handler. I tried not only to focus on the impact of dogs on humans, but also to emphasize the importance of the personality of the therapist. I also consider the impact of different personality theories on the personality of the handler/therapist, and the importance of theoretical background and preparation in the given area in which the handler/therapist engages with dogs. Based on the positive respondent reactions, I trust that this research will prove to be of use to people involved in human-animal positive interactions.

Healing paws: animals in the work-place assisting with stress management

Carstens, Michelle Santos 06 1900 (has links)
The importance of stress management is emphasized throughout this study as well as the need to cater stress management programmes to the unique needs of individuals. The possibility of introducing an animal-assisted stress management programme into the work environment is explored by means of a qualitative study in order to test out the feasibility of such an intervention. The positive physical and psychological effects animals have on humans has been extensively researched and reported. Eleven participants were randomly chosen from within the same department by means of purposive sampling. Semi-structured interviews were held with each participant and thematic analysis was used to analyse the transcribed interviews. Various themes were identified and explored with the most prominent highlighting the need for privacy, respect and connection. Although animals do have positive effects on some employees, there are individual differences that need to be considered. An electronic animal-assisted stress management intervention is recommended. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Animal-assisted therapy and equine-assisted therapy/learning in Canada : surveying the current state of the field, its practitioners, and its practices

Schlote, Sarah M. 16 July 2009 (has links)
Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) and equine-assisted therapy/learning (EAT/L) are innovative techniques in counselling, psychotherapy, mental health, coaching, and other personal growth interventions. Although this field has experienced tremendous growth in the United States, very little is known about its Canadian equivalent. The purpose of this study was therefore to examine the current state of AAT and EAT/L in Canada, by conducting a national, bilingual (English and French) survey of helping professionals who involve animals in their practices. A total of 131 questionnaires were retained for analysis. The results of this study suggest that the field is very diverse, with a multitude of confusing terms and expressions, varying levels of education and training, and disagreement on how different practices are defined, resulting in a fragmented, confusing and inconsistent appearance. Recommendations for the evolution of the field and suggestions for future research are provided.
