Terrence McNally’s Universalizing Model: The Role of Disability in <em>Andre’s Mother; Lips Together, Teeth Apart</em>; and <em>Love! Valour! Compassion!</em>

Burnstine, Alexa 11 December 2019 (has links)
In his works such as Andre’s Mother; Lips Together, Teeth Apart; and Love! Valour! Compassion!, playwright Terrence McNally utilizes categorically gay themes such as homophobia and living with HIV and AIDS in a time when little was understood about the illnesses. For these reasons, McNally critics customarily analyze McNally’s plays with a queer theory lens. This work examines those same topics and others, but with a critical disability lens. Inspired by Robert McRuer’s analytical partnership of queer, AIDS, and disabilities studies, this work assesses McNally’s use of various types of languages and finds the figures who are characteristically presented as the contrast to normalcy are in fact normalized and hegemonized.

Instagram and relationships: An analysis using focus groups

Aniss, Mostafa A. 01 January 2016 (has links)
Using the focus group methodology, this thesis investigated Instagram’s impact on Knapp’s (1978) relational model, which conceptualized romantic relationships as occurring in stages. In particular, the purpose of this thesis was to gain insight on the ways that young adults (18–25) utilized Instagram’s affordances during the stages of romantic relationships. The focus groups elicited eight themes that provided insights on the motivations and behaviors of individuals who use Instagram’s affordances during romantic relationship processes. These themes included: 1) information seeking, 2) reciprocal idiosyncratic “Like,” 3) unequivocal comment, 4) significant first picture, 5) expected profile engagement, 6) reciprocal photo sharing, 7) jealousy provoking behaviors, and 8) supplemental termination behavior. The first four themes showed that Instagram’s affordances play a large role in the coming together stages of romantic relationships. The next two themes indicated that Instagram’s affordances play a large role in relationship maintenance. Finally, the last two themes indicated that Instagram’s affordances play a moderate role in the coming apart stages of relationships. The uses and gratifications theory was used to explain the findings.

Women’s agency in living apart together: constraint, strategy and vulnerability

Duncan, Simon January 2015 (has links)
Recent research suggests that women can use living apart together (LAT) for a reflexive and strategic undoing of the gendered norms of cohabitation. In this article we examine this assertion empirically, using a representative survey from Britain in 2011 and follow-up interviews. First, we find little gender differentiation in practices, expectations, or attitudes about LAT, or reasons for LAT. This does not fit in with ideas of undoing gender. Secondly, in examining how women talk about LAT in relation to gender, we distinguish three groups of ‘constrained’, ‘strategic’ and ‘vulnerable’ female interviewees. All valued the extra space and time that LAT could bring, many welcomed some release from traditional divisions of labour, and some were glad to escape unpleasant situations created by partnership with men. However, for the constrained and vulnerable groups LAT was second best, and any relaxation of gendered norms was seen as incidental and inconsequential to their major aim, or ideal, of the ‘proper family’ with cohabitation and marriage. Rather, their agency in achieving this was limited by more powerful agents, or was a reaction to perceived vulnerability. While the strategic group showed more purposeful behaviour in avoiding male authority, agency remained relational and bonded. Overall we find that women, at least in Britain, seldom use LAT to purposefully or reflexively undo gender. Equally, LAT sometimes involves a reaffirmation of gendered norms. LAT is a multi-faceted adaption to circumstances where new autonomies can at the same time incorporate old subordinations, and new arrangements can herald conventional family forms.

Practices and perceptions of living apart together

Duncan, Simon, Phillips, M., Carter, J., Roseneil, S., Stoilova, M. January 2014 (has links)
Yes / This paper examines how people living apart together (LATs) maintain their relationships, and describes how they view this living arrangement. It draws on a 2011 survey on living apart together (LAT) in Britain, supplemented by qualitative interviewing. Most LATs in Britain live near to their partners, and have frequent contact with them. At the same time most see LAT in terms of a monogamous, committed couple, where marriage remains a strong normative reference point, and see living apart as not much different from co-residence in terms of risk, emotional security, or closeness. Many see themselves living together in the future. However, LAT does appear to make difference to patterns of care between partners. In addition, LATs report advantages in terms of autonomy and flexibility. The paper concludes that LAT allows individuals some freedom to manoeuvre in balancing the demands of life circumstances and personal needs with those of an intimate relationship, but that practices of living apart together do not, in general, represent a radical departure from the norms of contemporary coupledom, except for that which expects couples to cohabit.

Numerical simulation of selected geologic processes based on Discrete Element Method

Liu, Yuan 14 January 2019 (has links)
This study presents numerical modeling of geologic processes based on Discrete Element Method (DEM), including modeling of pull-apart basin development based on Particle Flow Code (PFC) and simulation of deformation and earthquake potential of Ordos Block (China) under present tectonic stress regime based on Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC). A scale-independent modeling approach based on PFC2D has been established to simulate the development of pull-apart basins. The micro-scale PFC models are used to investigate crack propagation and basin development in releasing sidestep systems with pure strike-slip, transtensional, and transpressional master faults, respectively. In each system, three typical models including 30° underlapping, 90° non-overlapping, and 150° overlapping releasing sidesteps are chosen. The modeling results are compared with pull-apart basins in nature. The geometric differences of pull-apart basins result from both the initial strike-slip fault geometries and its various evolution stages. Rhomboidal basins which have larger basin length than the amount of motion form in overlapping systems and do not progress through the spindle-shaped and lazy-Z-shaped stages such as the Dead Sea basin. Rhomboidal basins with cross-basin faults tend to form in underlapping systems. Finally, the origin of rhomboidal pull-apart basins, depocenters of pull-apart basins, cross-basin faults and their significances, models for pull-apart basin development, and minimum displacements and ages to form pull-apart basins are discussed. A two-dimensional UDEC model involving Ordos Block and adjacent areas is set up. Boundary conditions based on present tectonic regime are assumed. Block rotations, shear stress and displacement on faults, ratio of shear to normal force are simulated. Slip tendency which represents the assessment of the potential for causing slip on individual faults and earthquake-prone of the faults is predicted. Modeling results are compared with geologic evidences.

„Living apart together“ im Kontext von Partnerschaftsbildern, beruflichen Lagen und Eigenschaften der Herkunftsfamilie

Lois, Nadia 28 May 2014 (has links)
A study into the main structural features of the Namaqua region and their relation to the intrusion of the Keimoes Suite

Sithole, Nompumelelo January 2013 (has links)
>Magister Scientiae - MSc / The thesis provides a study into the main structural features of the Namaqua Region and their relation to the intrusion of the Keimoes Suite. This was achieved by producing a digitized map of the Namaqua Region structural framework using a LandSAT image and MOVE software for remote sensing. The structural framework showed an array of shear zones and fault systems which trend in a NW-SE direction. The validation of the sense of movement, location and orientation of the shear zones was done by field mapping. The general orientation of all shear zones was NW-SE. The sense of movement along the Neusspruit, Boven Rugzeer and Trooilapspan shear zones was found to be dextral strike slip movement and the Cnydas shear zone had a sinistral strike slip movement. The location of the shear zones were determined by analyzing the deviation in general foliation trend which was visualized using Rose Diagrams. The field data and the remote sensing were found to agree with the transpressive environment of the Namaqua Region. The oblique collision of the Namaqua-Natal crustal block with the Kaapvaal Craton during the orogenic event at ~1.2 Ga created a compressionalgeotectonic setting which allowed for the intrusion of the early to late syn-tectonic Keimoes Suite granites. The lateral escape of the Namaqua-Natal crustal block took place along the western margin of the Kaapvaal Craton. This was brought on by prolonged compression which resulted in the formation of a releasing bend in the Namaqua Region. This releasing bend produced the negative flower structure with dextral shear zones which facilitated the intrusion of the post-tectonic Keimoes Suite granites.

New families? Tradition and change in partnering and relationships

Duncan, Simon, Phillips, M. January 2008 (has links)
No / The family as a social institution is often said to be undergoing rapid change or even crisis. Commentary in the media and by policy-makers sometimes claims a `breakdown¿ of the family, asserting that intimate ties of loving and caring are becoming more individualised and self-centred, even selfish. Some scholars see this as part of a broader process whereby traditional social ties such as class, religion and family are fading away. Instead, they argue, people are `compelled to choose their own biographies¿ and personal relationships are being individually and actively chosen from a diverse range of possibilities. Statistically speaking, marriage is decreasing in popularity, whilst living alone, cohabitation and births outside marriage are increasing. But what do trends like this mean? Does this mean `family breakdown¿ or, as much in-depth family research has argued, just that the outward form of families is changing but the inner core - the value people attach to their family relationships ¿ remains central? This project tried to answer this question by examining the British public¿s attitude to different family relationships and parenting arrangements. It looked particularly at cohabitation and marriage, partnering, divorce, solo living, living apart together, same sex relationships and friends.
