Language and identity in ancient narratives : the relationship between speech patterns and social context in the Acts of the Apostles, Acts of John, and Acts of Philip

Snyder, Julia Ann January 2013 (has links)
Drawing on insights from sociolinguistics, the thesis investigates the relationship between speech patterns and social context in three ancient Greek narratives: the Acts of the Apostles, Acts of John, and Acts of Philip. The thesis explores how characters’ speech patterns correlate with their Christian status, and with the Christian status of their addressees. The relationship between speech patterns and gentile/Jewish identity is also assessed. Linguistic variables include plural forms of address and third-person references to Jesus and the Christian god. The thesis shows that Christian characters are portrayed as speaking differently amongst themselves than when addressing non-Christian characters. It also demonstrates that parameters of sociolinguistic variation in each text point to differing understandings of Christian identity. It is argued that attention to sociolinguistic relationships highlights the importance of ascetic practices and baptism in the Acts of Philip, the gradual nature of Christian conversion in the Acts of John, and the close relationship between Jewish and Christian identity in the Acts of the Apostles. The thesis also examines characterization and implied audience, and argues that attention to social context is necessary to appreciate the full significance of an author’s choice of words.

Roberto Bolaño: aproximações à tradição literária do apócrifo / Roberto Bolaño: approximations to the literary tradition of the apocryphal

This essay analyzes some dialogues between Roberto Bolaño´s La literatura nazi en América and the literary tradition of the apocryphal. To do so, we selected a line of apocryphal writings that relate the factual with fiction and memory to shape a narrative made out of reading experiences, imagination and the dissolution of some rigid concepts of Biography and History. From this perspective, we start rescuing in a panoramic way a lineage of works that constitutes a literary family inside a wider tradition: Vidas Imaginarias, by Marcel Schwob; Retratos reales e imaginarios, by Alfonso Reyes; Historia universal de la infamia, by Jorge Luís Borges; and La sinagoga de los Iconoclastas, by Rodolfo Wilcock. Then, we proceed selecting Jorge Luis Borges´s work, for a more detailed study. Starting with the reorganization of forms borrowed from the literary tradition, Bolaño develops writing procedures that are improved in his whole works, strengthening the dialogue between his precursors and his own work configured as the result of a continuous exercise of revision and rewritings.

Studies in the Book of Jubilees : the themes of calendar, genealogy and chronology

Rook, John Thomas January 1984 (has links)
This thesis is divided into three distinct yet related chapters. The first chapter deals with the question of the actual calendar which is used in Jubilees. The work criticizes scholarly opinions concerning the calendar which have gone relatively unchallenged since the Qumran discovery. The chapter concludes that while the calendar question is difficult and many calendars can be detected as functioning in the work, it is the 28-day month which is dominant and not months of 30, 30 and 31 days. In the second chapter which deals with the genealogy of the patriarchs, the attention of the reader is directed to the names of the wives of the patriarchs. The question which the thesis raises at this point is related to the function of these women in the narrative in relation to the etymology of their names. The conclusion reached is that the narrative and the etymology of the names are clearly related. For example, when the etymological meaning of a woman is favourable, the narrative at that point is positive and vice versa. Chapter Three deals with chronology which is in close proximity to both calendar and genealogy. The question the thesis asks is how the chronology of Jubilees relates to the chronologies of MT, LXX and SP and also raises the question as to which chronology that of Jubilees is dependant upon for its structure. It is determined that Jubilees and SP are most closely related. The structure itself of the chronology of Jubilees is examined and it is concluded that the design is more concerned with past history than future history. The implications of the thesis on the questions of date and authorship are considered. The conclusion is reached that the author is a member of an unnamed conservative-pietist sect who wrote at a time later than Antiochus IV.

Apócryphus : o evangelho não autorizado segundo José Saramago

Veiga, Alan Ricardo Martins da January 2015 (has links)
This thesis intends to present a contrastive reading among the writings with religious nature of the Portuguese writer José Saramago, The Gospel according to Jesus Christ and Cain with the writings consider sacred by the Jewish and Christian cultures: the Bible. The search aims, in this way, to contribute with an innovative reading to the analysis previous done about the author’s books. Besides, let us seek to point the relation between Literature and Religion, using the theories of Theo-poetic. The analysis done started by the author’s thoughts about Novel, Literature, History and Religion, but it also comes back into the author’s childhood trying to comprehend his family environment, as well as the education received by him. Next, let us find the occurrence of the sacred in his work by applying the ethical atheism influenced by the humanistic philosophies and the association to the concept of apocryphal books in front of religious writings. After, let us present the historic evolution of the Bible, as well as, its relation with the Translation theories and the possible occurrence of doctrinal deviations from the religious point of view, under the observation of hermeneutical and exegetical concepts. In achieving the results, let us highlight that, some of them were expected due to the previous readings performed, however, most of them are surprising under the historical and traditional point of view. Finally, we believe in the validity of this research because it allows the reader, in addition to a comparison, a reflection in search of his personal truth.
