Laying Bare the Sins of the Father: Exploring White Fathers in Post-Apartheid LiteratureReck, Casey M 01 January 2010 (has links)
This Thesis is an exploration of white fathers in three post-apartheid novels: Mark Behr's The Smell of Apples, Nadine Gordimer's The House Gun, and J. M. Coetzee's Disgrace. By examining the link between private white hegemonic masculinity and the apartheid government, the Thesis analyzes the transitional process as these men try to adopt less authoritative identities.

Determination of the methanogenic potential of an apple processing wastewater treatment systemPaulsen, Cindy 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (Msc Food Sc (Food Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / The food and beverage industry generates large volumes of wastewater annually. The
disposal of factory effluent from the fruit processing industry has always been a cause of
concern to both the fruit processors and controlling bodies responsible for effluent
management. Traditional disposal of wastewater into sewerage works has become
undesirable due to its economical and environmental impacts. Therefore, on-site
anaerobic treatment of wastewater has received considerable interest due to lower capital
outlays and energy recovery possibilities. Thus, the aim of this study was to establish an
operational treatment profile for an anaerobic pond system treating fruit-processing
wastewater. The specific activity of the microbial populations was also monitored to
determine the effect of the fruit processing seasons (peak and off-peak season). The
biogas production potential at various temperatures was also assessed to determine the
viability of methane recovery.
The influence of the processing and environmental conditions on the ponds’
performance was established by monitoring various process parameters. The results
showed that the chemical oxygen demand (COD) levels decreased during the off-peak
season but the pond pH remained relatively stable between 6.0 and 6.4 during the entire
year. Pond alkalinity was found to be dependent on the regular lime dosing to maintain
the necessary alkalinity. The volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations indicated that the
microbial populations of the pond were functioning well. However, a decrease in microbial
activity and VFA concentrations were observed at the lower temperatures during the winter
months. The temperature profile of the pond showed that the pond temperature was
impacted by the fluctuations in the ambient air temperature. The general trend established
by the operational treatment profile clearly showed the impact of the peak and off-peak
season.
The sludge activity of the anaerobic pond was evaluated to determine the effect of
the apple-processing peak and off-peak season on the specific activity of the acidogenic
and methanogenic populations within the sludge. An activity test using four different test
media was used during the activity assays. Sludge samples were taken at four different
sampling positions across the pond’s sludge bed. The sludge was also subjected to a
biogas formation study, which was designed to simulate pond conditions on laboratory scale in order to evaluate the biogas production potential of the anaerobic pond. The
cumulative biogas volume and total CH4 composition showed little or no difference
between the four sludge sampling sites. A major difference was found between the activity
of the microbial populations during the peak and off-peak seasons. The overall trend
regarding the biogas production rate (SB) and the methane production rate (SM) values
showed an increased activity during peak-season and a decreased activity during off-peak
season. For the biogas formation test the highest incubation temperature (25°C) resulted
in the most biogas being produced, followed by 18°C, and with 10°C resulting in the lowest
biogas volume. The biogas formation tests indicated that microbial activity and therefore
biogas production was dependent on especially favourable temperature conditions. The
pond and activity of the microbial populations are therefore influenced by factors like
environmental changes such as decreased air temperatures and substrate changes such
as decreased COD concentrations during the off-peak season. This in turn influences the
rate of biogas production as well as the methane production rate.
The theoretical CH4 calculations and estimates based on the results obtained during
the biogas formation tests indicated that CH4 recovery from the anaerobic pond would
definitely be a worthwhile consideration. If it were assumed that the estimated CH4
volumes (based on only 15% of the pond volume for practical reasons) obtained could be
applied as an energy source, the minimum yearly savings in coal usage would amount to
about R 665 000.
This study was valuable in evaluating the factors such as pond conditions, pond
activity and air temperatures and the effect on the biogas production potential as well as
more importantly, CH4 production for the purpose of energy recovery.

Nutrient requirement and distribution of intensively grown ‘Brookfield Gala’ apple treesKangueehi, Grace Nandesora 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MscAgric (Horticulture))--University of Stellenbosch, 2008. / ‘Brookfield Gala’ apple trees were planted out in July 2003 in a Dundee soil form, consisting
of well-aerated sandy loam soil. During the first 12 months trees received young tree
solutions high in nitrogen. The nutrient solution of the 2nd leaf trees was based on a yield
estimation of 10 ton. ha-1 plus 30%. Nutrient solutions for the 3rd leaf trees were based on 25
ton. ha-1 yield estimations and adapted upwards.
Seasonal uptake and distributions were determined for macro and micro elements, using twoand
three-year-old apple trees during the seasons 2004/2005 and 2005/2006. In the bearing
apple trees the macro nutrient accumulated rapidly from late winter to late autumn. Prior to
leaf drop most of the N, P, S, Mg and a small portion of K were redistributed back into the
permanent parts of the tree. On the other hand, all Ca in the leaves was lost through leaf drop.
Apple fruit contains comparatively large quantities (±60.2%) of K, which are removed during
harvest.
Guidelines for minimum and maximum nutritional requirements based on the amount
necessary to produce 1 kg fruit were determined. For the 3rd leaf trees the minimum macro
nutrient requirements (g. kg-1 yield) of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S were ±1.7, ±0.3, ±2.3, ±0.5,
±0.2 and ±0.2, respectively. The maximum nutrient requirements (g. kg-1 yield) for N, P, K,
Ca, Mg and S were ±2.6, ±0.4, ±3.3, ±1.9, ±0.4 and ±0.2, respectively. For the 3rd leaf trees
the minimum micro nutrient requirements (mg. kg-1 yield) of Na, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, B and Mo
were ±75.1, ±1.3, ±28.7, ±0.9, ±3.0, ±5.7 and ±0.3, respectively. The maximum nutrient
requirements (mg. kg-1 yield) of Na, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, B and Mo were ±102.9, ±7.8, ±32.6,
±1.1, ±6.5, ±7.6 and ±0.3, respectively.
Labelled N uptake and distribution for two- and three-year-old apple trees were also
determined during the same seasons. The labelled N uptake and distribution results indicated
that there was a low labelled N uptake in the initial growth stages, suggesting the importance
of internal N reserves for plant development at the beginning of the season. In the active
growing period more than 60% of the labelled N was found in the new growth. Uptake
efficiency improved as the trees grew older. The effect of different nutrient levels on tree growth, yield and fruit quality was assessed:
lower (80%) than the standard (100%) and three higher (120%, 140% and 160%). Results
indicated that different nutrient levels had no effect on yield, blush or TSS during the 18
months of application over two bearing seasons. The application of biological products
(humic acid, and compost plus compost extract) over a period of 18 months had a significant
influence on the TSS, malic acid and citric acid concentrations. A tendency towards an
increase in total fine root number and length occured with the addition of biological
ameliorant.

Submitted by Marcelo Teixeira (mvteixeira@ucs.br) on 2014-06-02T18:57:08Z

The integrated apple production (PIM) has emerged as a response to these requirements, serving as a tool to standardize the production of this fruit. From this, the study examined whether the adoption of pim in apple production chain, it is enough to avoid that this product being a subject for technical and non-tariff barriers in the foreign market. Considering this, it was researched which apple certifications are more relevant to the consumer markets, looking for identifying and classifying the requirements and also which is the positioning of the pim considering this kind of regulations. Therefore, was developted an exploratory study, through a bibliografic, documental and survey research inside the PIM, from which it was possible identify that the PIM requires adjustments to maintain its relevance as a certification in the apple productive chain, because it still does not have the equalization to the international labels, that is required to its acceptance on abroad, or even the recognition in the domestic market

The identification of compounds from apples that regulate adult hippocampal neurogenesisIchwan, Muhammad 09 May 2016 (has links) (PDF)
The high composition of fruits and vegetables in the daily diet is associated with cognitive well-being, especially in the elderly population. The phytonutrients are shown to have effects as antioxidants that neutralize oxidative stressors and can interact with molecular pathways to signal neuron survival. Adult hippocampal neurogenesis is a dynamic lifelong process of generating functional newborn neurons in the granular layer of the dentate gyrus from adult precursor cells. This process contributes to brain plasticity and plays a role in learning and memory. External stimuli such as environmental enrichment and physical activity are known to positively regulate this process. However, the role of nutrition and whether nutritional compounds have pro-neurogenic effects on adult hippocampal precursor cells are still elusive.
In this study, I investigated the impact of dietary compounds in apples, a significant source of phytonutrients in our food, on adult hippocampal neurogenesis. I demonstrated that quercetin, the most abundant polyphenol in apple, induces cell cycle exit and differentiation of adult hippocampal precursor cells in monolayer culture. Furthermore, this compound also increases the number of surviving cells upon differentiation in vitro, through the activation of endogenous antioxidants in the Nrf2-Keap1 pathway and the prosurvival Akt pathway. Quercetin supplementation in vivo is also shown to significantly increase the number of surviving cells and new neurons in the dentate gyrus. To search for other potential active compounds in apple, I performed bioassay-guided fractionation whereby the flesh extract from apples of the Pinova cultivar was subjected to liquid- and solid phase separation and the active fraction was determined using primary neurosphere assays using cells derived from adult mouse dentate gyrus. Using mass spectometry, we revealed that the active compounds in the apple flesh extract are dihydroxybenzoate glycosides, which are non-flavonoid benzoic acid derivatives. I also confirmed that the isomers of these compounds; 2,3- and 3,5 dihydroxybenzoic acids significantly increase the number of neurospheres. Interestingly, 3,5 dihdroxybenzoic acid is an agonist of lactate receptor hydroxycarboxylic acid receptor 1 (HCAR1), with an even higher affinity than lactate. This receptor is suggested to mediate neurotrophic actions such as increasing production and release of BDNF. I also demonstrated for the first time that this receptor is presence in adult hippocampal precursor cells.
To observe whether customary fruits or fruit-related products consumption affects adult hippocampal neurogenesis, I performed an experiment giving apple juice supplementation ad libitum to mice. I did not find a significant increase in net neurogenesis or the performance in the Morris water maze after apple juice supplementation. This is likely due to the low concentration of active compounds in apple juice failing to reach an effective concentration in the body.
I conclude that apples provide potential proneurogenic compounds that can influence adult hippocampal neurogenesis through the activation of endogenous antioxidant mechanisms and molecular pathways for cell survival. Further studies are necessary to investigate the role of HCAR1 activation on adult hippocampal neurogenesis, which is a potential new mechanism to explain the health benefits of fruit and vegetable consumption.

The increasing demand for quality and safe food is been pushing the agri-food chains to adopt alternative production systems, with the purpose of generate healthy and innocuous products for human consumption through traceable practices, in order to protect the environment, workers and consumer.
