Awarding Architecture In Turkey: National Architecture Exhibition And Awards Program

Durmaz, Nur 01 December 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The establishment of the National Architecture Exhibition and Awards (NAEA) program in 1987, by Chamber of Architects, coincides with the period of dissolving modernist paradigm and rising pluralist influences in Turkey. The program, as a critical medium, is expected to reflect &ldquo / national&rdquo / architectural practice and contribute in the &ldquo / contemporary&rdquo / architectural practice in Turkey. In order to evaluate the consistencies with these objectives, firstly the program identity and then the participations are analyzed. On the other hand, regarding the searches for &ldquo / innovativeness&rdquo / and &ldquo / contemporaneity,&rdquo / parallelism with the international architectural agenda and concerns for geographic differences are analyzed through the awarded projects and the jury reports. In the analysis about the position of the program as well as its indications about Turkish architectural practice, the following results are obtained: Program can be defined as having an insulated and closed character with regard to its structure. Considering the participations, it is seen that it does not reflect the heterogeneous character of its geographical scope and has an elitist profile in awards distribution. Priority given to senior architects in Grand Prizes, the weight of the restoration category and the newly established commemoration program itself point out to a conservative stance. In the thesis, the awarded submissions are analyzed comparatively with Progressive Architecture (PA) Awards program. It is an established program in United States, which perpetuate since 1954 and it is claimed to have both &ldquo / reflective&rdquo / and &ldquo / limit-pushing&rdquo / positions in the architectural platform. In NAEA program, instead of the claims for giving precedence to &ldquo / limit-pushing&rdquo / attempts, a &ldquo / reflective&rdquo / position has been maintained. In the jury reports, the &ldquo / modernist&rdquo / award criteria can be defined as parallel with the agenda of international platform. In recent years, in international platform, instead of domination by styles, conceptual productions and sustainable themes gain prominence. Thus, regarding the submissions of NAEA, these parallelisms have been diminished.

Interseções entre arte e arquitetura. O caso dos pavilhões / Intersections between art and architecture. The case of pavilions

Ana Carolina Tonetti 29 April 2013 (has links)
This dissertation is focused on the study of pavilions and their relationship with the three-dimensional production - understood as installation and sculpture. Therefore, the concept of \"expanded field\", elaborated by Rosalind Krauss in the 1979 essay to encompass the transformation of sculpture from the 60\'s, is articulated with the recent shift of this same concept into the realm of architecture by some authors, namely Antony Vidler. The research is not just an investigation on the contribution of the architectural space for sculpture or, on the other hand, from sculpture to architecture, but focuses especially the line that separates them, understood as a disposition of convergence by the two disciplines which dissolves the reciprocal bonds in a interstitial production, performed by artists, architects or even both together. The pavilion has always been understood as an experimental field for architects, especially during the twentieth century when it helped consolidate the assumptions of modern architecture. Today it has gained great visibility through several programs that offer specific conditions by commissioning and assuming a unique architecture design that sets up a production untied from the binomial form-function, resulting in a self referent building whose subject is the architecture itself. From the point of view of the arts, it represents an expansion of the installation configuring a spatial whole that also implicate the building and, when taken as meta architecture, also operates as a platform for critical confrontation. The opposition on theory about the ramifications of the expanded field, as well as a research on the essential characteristics to a malleable term, are faced with a critical analysis of selected cases in three institutions gathering rather distinct characteristics - the Venice Biennale, the Institute of Contemporary Art Inhotim and the Serpentine Gallery -, and allow conclusions on this contemporary production in a disciplinary threshold.

Médiation de l'architecture par l'exposition et sa réception par des visiteurs experts et non experts / Mediating architecture through the exhibition media : the reception of architectural exhibits by expert and non-expert visitors

Laberge, Marie Elizabeth 11 October 2012 (has links)
This thesis focusses on the mediation of architecture in the museum setting and on the different tools used to communicate the architectural project in the exhibition. The main goal of this research is to get a better knowledge and understanding of the reception of the different objects used to exhibit the many aspects of architectural projects by visitors (architects and non-architects). There is a general agreement on the fact that it is difficult to communicate architecture through the exhibition media. Many objects are typically used to exhibit the architectural project : drawings, models, photographs, videos and so forth. Some of these tools can be hard to understand, especially for a layperson, since they are coded objects. In order to better communicate the architectural project, curators often choose to depict it by presenting a series of objects, each tool conveying a different aspect of the building. This serial type of presentation can make the task even harder for some visitors. Since understanding an architectural project can be quite difficult for visitors, it appears important to investigate the meaning making of visitors of varying profiles. Six main questions were investigated in this thesis : (1) Which exhibition objects attracted the visitor’s attention? (2) What type of mental operations did the visitor do in relation to these objects? (3) Which obstacles did the visitor face, and what did he do when faced with such obstacles? (4) Which aspects of the architectural project (materiality, concept, context, etc.) attracted the visitor’s attention? (5) How did the visitor link the different objects presented in a serial manner? (6) Did the visitor’s professionnal profile (architect or non-architect) influence his meaning making? Data were collected among thirty visitors at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal during the exhibition « Some Ideas on Living in London and Tokyo by Stephen Taylor and Ryue Nishizawa ». Each participant was asked to express, as freely as possible, what he thought, saw, felt and imagined during the course of his visit, as is prescribed by the thinking aloud method (also known as protocol analysis). The participant is accompanied by the researcher throughout his visit. Visitor’s verbalisations are recorded, then typed and encoded for analysis. Many of the results obtained in this research confirm ideas that were presented in previous texts by scholars : the popularity of photographs ; the little interest for plans by non-architects ; the various aspects of the architectural project mentionned in relation to the objects exhibited ; the links established between objects as a means to identify the serial presentation. Other results, though, challenge some ideas frequently presented by authors, but never validated by empirical data. For instance, many curators consider a model to be a very popular and easily understood tool used to communicate architecture. In the present research, the model is not used very much by visitors. Therefore, the type of model and the way to exhibit it might make this tool more or less useful for meaning making by visitors. Many authors believe that non architects encounter difficulties and obstacles during their visit. The results obtained in this thesis show that, as expected, non architects do face obstacles, but they also reveal that architects themselves face many obstacles and challenges in their meaning making while visiting the architecture exhibition

Construção, arquitetura e configuração urbana de Campinas nas décadas de 1930 e 1940: o papel de quatro engenheiros modernos / Construction, architecture and urban configuration of Campinas in the 1930s and 1940s - the role of four modern engineers

Zakia, Sílvia Amaral Palazzi 11 May 2012 (has links)
This paper analyses how the architectural production and political action of four engineers contributed to the spatial modernization process of the city of Campinas in the 1930s and 1940s. Among the group of professionals involved in the modernization project of the city, the participation of the engineers Eduardo Badaró, Hoche Neger Segurado, Lix da Cunha and Mario Penteado stood out. The first engineer, who worked for the city hall, was responsible for implementing the plan, and the other engineers represented the most distinguished architecture offices in the city. It is of great interest to understand how the architectural production of these engineers was carried outand investigate the factors involved in its creation: conceptual and artistic references influenced by the late echoes of the clash between modern and academic in the early decades of the twentieth century that motivated engineers and architects in the search for new paradigms inspired by the European avant-gardes; the material resources having in the reinforced concrete a new determinant in the construction system; the inheritance of different academic backgrounds; the economic relations closely related to the industrialization of the city; the political strategies for the legitimation of the implementation of the urban modernization plan; the actions of the newly founded professional entities in the process of assertion of the professional category, and finally, the demands and aspirations of their clientele. By addressing the circumstances surrounding the transformation of the urban space, having these professionals as mutually responsible for all these changes, the investigation brings up a reflection on an idea of modernity that goes beyond the arts, does not follow a smooth evolutionary path and, above all, that recognizes the existence of various architectural categories, representing many streams of a multifaceted modernity.
