The reproductive biology and recruitment dynamics of snapper, Chrysophrys auratus.

Saunders, Richard James January 2009 (has links)
The population dynamics and fishery productivity of snapper, Chrysophrys auratus, in South Australia are strongly driven by inter-annual variation in recruitment. This variable recruitment produces the occasional strong year-class which, over a number of years, results in a cycle of increasing and then decreasing biomass. The aim of this study was to develop an understanding of the recruitment dynamics of snapper through a study of the reproductive biology of adults, as well as the biology and ecology of 0+ recruits. Field sampling was done through 2006 to 2008 in northern Spencer Gulf, the region that generally contributes the majority of South Australia’s snapper catch. The recruitment of 0+ snapper was measured from a study of inter-and intra- annual patterns of distribution and abundance. This was done using two independent trawl sampling regimes, one using a beam trawl and the other an otter trawl, at different times in the settlement season. There was considerable inter-annual variation in abundance of 0+ fish of up to two orders of magnitude and, in some years, almost no recruitment was observed. The spatial pattern of dispersion of recruits was clumped and consistent between years; one area, Western Shoal, always produced the highest catches indicating that it is an important nursery. The effects of the timing of spawning and water temperature on growth patterns of the 0+ snapper collected in the trawl sampling were studied to determine possible impacts on recruitment processes. Growth was studied from age/length regressions and by measuring the widths of microincrements in the sagittal otoliths. Sub-surface water temperature was also logged in the region. Growth rate varied inter- and intra-annually but was not limited by temperature in the pre-settlement period. However, post-settlement growth rate was significantly correlated with water temperature and fish exhibited a dramatic slowing of growth as temperature declined in autumn. Later spawned fish were considerably smaller than earlier spawned fish of the same age, which may have implications for post-settlement survival. The reproductive biology of snapper was studied to determine if annual variation in recruitment was related to egg production. Reproductive samples from northern Spencer Gulf were collected over three seasons (2005/06, 2006/07 and 2007/08) and were analysed macro- and microscopically. Spawning activity was determined by calculating estimates of spawning fraction and batch fecundities. The onset of spawning occurred in November but varied between years and corresponded with times when water temperature was between 18 and 20ºC. The length of the spawning season also differed between years. In each year the peak spawning activity occurred during December when fish spawned almost daily. Spawning frequency and relative batch size did not differ between the first two spawning seasons but, in the third season, batch size was considerably greater and spawning fraction lower. However, recruitment was considerably more variable than the annual differences in spawning output could explain. This indicates that mortality processes during the planktonic or early post-settlement period are important in the recruitment dynamics of snapper. The impact of water temperature, lunar cycle and tide on the timing and strength of recruitment was investigated. Pre-settlement duration, spawn dates and settlement dates were determined from the microstructure of the sagittal otoliths of 0+ snapper. The patterns of successful spawning and settlement were determined by back-calculating to the day on which individual recruits were spawned and settled. The frequency distributions of these dates were compared with water temperature, lunar periodicity and the temporal variation in spawning. There was considerable variation within a season in the timing and magnitude of successful recruitment. Strongest recruitment resulted from spawning during December and January on days when water temperatures were between 21 and 23ºC but spawning on days in this range did not necessarily result in recruitment. Pre-settlement duration was unaffected by water temperature. Some evidence of lunar periodicity was detected in both the spawn and settlement date frequencies. Importantly, the spawn date frequency distributions of successful 0+ recruits did not correspond with the measured spawning activity of adults as considerable portions of the spawning season in each year did not produce successful recruits. These results indicated that spawning output and water temperature cannot explain the observed magnitude in recruitment variation. Food availability for 0+ snapper has been implicated in their patterns of distribution and abundance in New Zealand and Japan. Stomach contents of 0+ snapper were described as an initial step in developing some understanding of the dispersion of 0+ recruits. In spite of their generalist feeding habit, in the area of highest abundance (Western Shoal), snapper took considerably more polychaetes than elsewhere in northern Spencer Gulf. If polychaetes are more abundant at Western Shoal, this could explain the higher density of 0+ snapper there but insufficient information was available on these animals for northern Spencer Gulf to address this hypothesis. Food availability and/or quality may influence the distribution of 0+ recruits. The multi-species collections from the beam trawls were described to develop an understanding of the spatial dispersion of recruits and their habitat associations. 0+ snapper co-occurred with an assemblage that was characterised by fish and invertebrate species that are associated with mud/soft bottom, but they never occurred with the assemblage of species associated with seagrass, even when recruitment was strongest. This association partly explains the observed distribution pattern, but not all areas of mud/soft bottom had 0+ recruits, even in strong recruitment years. In northern Spencer Gulf, seagrass areas could be excluded from future snapper recruitment surveys. The recruitment dynamics of snapper in northern Spencer Gulf were characterised by dramatic inter-annual variation but a consistent pattern of dispersion. 0+ snapper were concentrated in a few small areas in northern part of the study region. One of these areas, Western Shoal, appears to be very important as a nursery for snapper. Furthermore, the pattern of 0+ snapper dispersion was independent of recruitment strength. The potential magnitude of 0+ snapper recruitment, set by egg production, was altered by mortality during the early life history. Some of this mortality was related to temperature regimes at the time of spawning but this did not explain all the variation in the magnitude and timing of recruitment. Snapper spawning occurred at times with suitable temperature conditions but recruitment did not always result. This indicates the presence of other factor(s) that have substantial influences on mortality in the early life history. / http://proxy.library.adelaide.edu.au/login?url= http://library.adelaide.edu.au/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?BBID=1374397 / Thesis (Ph.D.) - University of Adelaide, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, 2009

Vestígios restos gestos : testemunhos de autoria / Traces remains gestures : authoring testimonies

Hickel, Neusa Kern January 2015 (has links)
In the death of the author declared by Foucault through the resonant saiying no matter who, it is given to see the limits of ownership for the one who writes, as a determining and previous counciousness, bringing to evidence the relationship between subject and language and its disappearance in the writing itself. Agamben engages, on its hand, showing that the author-function concerning the possibilities in each society, that are expressed in the uniqueness of absence; however, he retorts with the paradigm of presence-absence: the author`s gesture. In each expression remains a lack of expression, bringing into play/scene what is indelible on the edges, what can be witnessed. Pelbart also marks the gesture as not being a means of production, but the means by which it is assumed, turning a fact into an assemblage, the place of ethics; and Queiroz, highlights the intolerable of the present in its becomings; and Deleuze refers to the Foucault-Blanchot link as talking is not seeing - that is, saying the unseen, it comes into contact with the limits of language, the unutterable. This is the crossroad where this thesis turns into gesture, putting in the scene the author`s place under another question: who is it about when it comes to learning? What place does it/this belong to? This permanent concern with the learning unleashed the challenge of reversing it into unfamiliar territory: the philosophy of difference. A displacement which shines light on a learning in immanence to life - learning: a life – seeing as assemblage in time: out of time, untemely. A mode of learning, in its vitality, proclaims uniqueness, impersonality and death of the author, giving back a place always waiting on what's yet to be produced, a permanent authoring to be, under the effect of the disaster that drags certainties. It`s from a learning implied to suffering (non-learning), trapped in the body`s archive, that asks, in its in-Fante silence, to express itself; it is by the precarious edges that a potential (learn-not) becomes visible, that remains are made testimonies. It was necessary to weave strange intercessions until the thought ran out of image and reversed representation, as well as judgment and common sense thinking, in his intimacy with a learning; in which literature in its dysfunctional ways of saying affects-percepts could invade the Clinic creating fictional deviations; that a proper medical device of Psychopedagogy (empirical territory), the Psychodrama, could say in the disconnection of fixed meanings and deployment of other signs. In this rhizome plan, concepts are machines inducing to thinking, folding and unfolding in a proliferation of Clinics: of Lost Time, echoing deafening noises and shaking sheets of time against oblivion and memory death; of Remains, insisting among concepts, but escaping through narrative cracks (play-act between a learning, a non- learning and a learning - not) ; of (one) Learning, where clinical trials connote the search of your event until a difference becomes a gesture of desubjectivation and the open stage dramas to the machinic relations, to the disordering of language by leakage functionality and representation. If clinics are expressions of the multiplicity of learning: (one) life... they also say with traces - remains - gestures between a certain learning and the inexorable question - who? The response is from another night, by absence and emptiness and neutral, proliferating passages, being transformed by the flavour of the conceptual intersections and from which emerges single effects of dispersion or chance encounter with the Outside. There are gaps of time, in which dumb sayings say, every time, in another sense. They are reverberations looking otherwise, always in search of a certain forever, doing itself in authorships.

Auto-assemblage dirigé de copolymères à blocs de forte incompatibilité comprenant un bloc carbohydrate pour des applications de nano-Lithographie / Directed self-assembly of high incompatibility of block copolymers comprising a carbohydrate block for nano-lithography applications

Ouhab, Djamila 10 February 2016 (has links)
Combining the Cermav expertise in the thin films design with very high resolution obtained by self-assembly of glycopolymers biobased and the know-how of LETI on innovative lithography processes, the objective of this thesis is to evaluate these new bio-based copolymers, combining-oligosaccharides as an alternative for nano lithography tomorrow. Indeed, in recent years the team of "Physical Chemistry of glycopolymers" of Cermav directed by R. Borsali has developed a new class of glycopolymers (PS-maltoheptaose, PCL-maltoheptaose, Xyloglycan-PSSI) can self-organize with a resolution of 5 nm, far surpassing the resolution reached today only by block copolymers from Oil PS-PMMA (20 nm). In parallel, during the last two years, Cea / Leti has validated the potential methods based on self-assembly of block copolymers PS-b-PMMA (20 nm resolution) as an alternative to the current lithography techniques. These results position the Cea / Leti in the international state of the art and provide a good basis for integration in the field of nano-electronics, new systems with higher resolution (<10 nm) as those developed by the Cermav. The proposed thesis work will take place in three stages: - First time candidate address the synthesis and characterization of new copolymers blocks combining hybrid oligosaccharides. - Then he's going to be interested in the development of nano-glycofilms organized as well as to identify important factors playing on the nano-organization. - And finally the control of the organization at the nanoscale by grapho-epitaxy for lithographic applications will be addressed. Two applications are described: the contact line (cylindrical and lamellar phases). Compatibility constraints trial microelectronics will also be detailed.

Trans-frontier conservation and the neoliberalisation of nature : the case of the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve, Mozambique

Symons, Kate January 2017 (has links)
Trans-frontier conservation areas (TFCAs), large cross-border areas dedicated to biodiversity conservation, multi-national co-operation and development are expanding in southern Africa, fast becoming the dominant conservation solution in the region. TFCAs adopt a celebratory discourse of ecological, community, economic and political gains, while the reality is often far more complicated. This thesis situates the expansion of TFCAs within a critical political ecology approach, and argues that they represent a neoliberal solution to a complex series of development, environment and political challenges. Drawing on five and a half months of fieldwork to Mozambique along with policy and discourse analysis it examines the first marine reserve to be linked to a TFCA in Africa, the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve (PPMR) in southern Mozambique. It makes three arguments: First, it argues that Mozambique’s embrace of TFCAs represents the neoliberalisation of conservation through novel tourism-based products, techniques of governance, creation of subject positions based on entrepreneurialism, and new arrangements of space. At the same time, the adoption of TFCAs also stems from Mozambique’s post-war politics, especially the ways in which elite state actors have sought to reconstruct and reorder the country through engagement with donors. Second, the thesis uses a combined governmentality and assemblage framework to explore how neoliberal conservation is made to cohere as a truth discourse, how it materially co-produces human and non-human life in the marine reserve, and how it is fragile, partial and contested. Third, it critiques the increasingly close relationship between the extractive and conservation sector at a policy, state and donor level, exploring how and why marine conservation is increasingly intertwined with Mozambique’s resources boom through its green economy discourse. Through these three points of engagement, the thesis contributes to debates around the intensifying relationship between extraction and conservation, Mozambique’s post-war development, and processes of neoliberalisation of nature.

Contested Safety: Monsanto's "Roundup Ready" Agricultural Assemblage versus Counter Discourses of Roundup

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) have a polarizing effect in the US. The first commercially viable GMO was Roundup Ready Soy, introduced by Monsanto in 1996, to be used in conjunction with Roundup herbicides. This thesis investigated and delineated the development and deployments of the discourse of Monsanto’s agricultural assemblage of Roundup Ready seeds and Roundup herbicides and its resistant discourses. Monsanto builds its discourse around the safety and necessity of Roundup Ready seeds through federal regulation and toxicology studies. Resistant discourses deployed by Monsanto’s critics problematize Roundup safety and reject Monsanto’s contention that GMOs are necessary for meeting world’s food demands. The discourse analysis pursued in this thesis explored interactions between the dominant discourse and counter discourses and charted their deployments in Colorado’s and Oregon’s 2014 ballot measures that would have required mandatory GMO labeling. Analysis suggested counter discourses were successful in mobilizing people to engage civically. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Communication Studies 2015

No. of bitstreams: 1 Sergio Luiz da Silva Muniz.pdf: 4037142 bytes, checksum: 4aa632d566202bdc0721109594a4f696 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-07-29 / Of all Squamata diversity, lizards represent more than half of described species in present. These animals serve as models for ecological and evolutionary studies, which makes them target of interest in scientific research in whole world. Caatinga is a major biome in Northeast of Brazil, occupying about 6.83% of the national territory and extending for several states of this region. It is a unique biome, and despite being located on a semi-arid climate, has a great variety of landscapes, biological richness and endemism. Reptile’s studies of diversity, composition and ecology in Caatinga are relatively recent, these research are extremely important and valuable to semiarid. But this information is punctual and does not represent Northeast biodiversity, requiring more effort in different localities, especially in rainforest areas of biome. This study aims to investigate lizard’s abundance, richness, diversity, spatial distribution and width/niche overlap in the Environmental Protection Area of Araripe. To achieve this goal, we sampled three different vegetation types (shrubby Caatinga, Cerradão and secondary Forest) APA of Chapada Araripe. The data collections were made monthly by active and passive collecting, during the twelve-month period (August/2011 to July/2012). The active collection was made one day for each area per month and lasting for six hours a day, three hours in the morning (8h to 11h), and three hours at night (18 to 21h). The passive collections were made using 60 pitfall traps with drift-fences, these were organized into twelve lines with five buckets at 5m of distance between them, and the lines were equally distributed at three vegetation types. Buckets were open for five days during each month. As a result, we found 20 lizard species belonging to 12 families. Richness and abundance varied among the three areas sampled. Caatinga had the highest number of species (n = 14) and Cerradão had de highest abundance (n = 99). Ameiva ameiva was the most abundant lizard from caatinga, while in Cerradão was Colobosaura modesta and for secondary forest was Norops brasiliensis. Lizards presents significant difference respect to the seasons (wet and dry), in the dry season the lizards were more abundant. Analyses based on null models indicate no significant values on the overlap of microhabitat use, showing that competition for space is not regulating this community structure, being regulated by other factors.
