Place-making for the imagination : Horace Walpole and Strawberry Hill

Harney, Marion January 2011 (has links)
Strawberry Hill, the Gothic villa and associated landscape, seat of Horace Walpole (1717-97), is without doubt mandatory in any assessment of eighteenth-century British architecture, yet the reasons for its creation have never been adequately explained or fully understood. This thesis asserts, for the first time, that Walpole’s ideas which informed Strawberry Hill are inspired by theories that stimulate ‘The Pleasures of the Imagination’ as articulated in essays by Joseph Addison (1672-1719) published in the Spectator (1712). The thesis argues that Walpole’s reasons for choosing Gothic have been misunderstood and that he valued this ‘true’ style of British architecture for its associative and imaginative connotations and as a means of expressing historical interpretation through material objects. It affirms that Strawberry Hill expressed the idea that it was based on monastic foundations using architectural quotations from Gothic tombs, representing visual links to historical figures and events. The thesis, moreover, develops an argument as to how Walpole’s theories expressed in Anecdotes of Painting (1762-71) and The History of the Modern Taste in Gardening (1780) became manifest at Strawberry Hill. Avoiding the straightforward architectural description of previous texts, the thesis demonstrates Strawberry Hill to be a sequence of theatrical spaces playing with scale, colour and atmosphere, specifically designed to create surprise and wonder in order to stimulate the imagination. A series of sensory effects and moods, based on contemporary landscape theory, create a background to Walpole’s collection of cultural and historical artefacts – each ‘singular,’ ‘unique,’ or ‘rare’ - artfully displayed to produce their own narrative. Unlike previous studies, the villa and landscape are evaluated as an entity, a structured essay in associative, imaginative thought. Finally, the dissertation reconstructs Strawberry Hill as it existed in Horace Walpole’s time, leading the reader on an integrative virtual tour of buildings, gardens, emblematic models and associative inspirations.

Edman, Jimmy, Fjodorov, Anton, Wilhelmsen, Marc January 2012 (has links)
Today there are many technical solutionsfor the e-commerce industry, incombination with a change in behavior ofthe end user. The consumer of todaydemands more availability andconvenience. This Master’s thesis has examined thecritical aspects of e-commercecompanies, as well as how they candevelop their e-commerce to create valuefor the end user. The aim has been toidentify the more and less importantfactors of the e-commerce business, andto investigate the extent to which thesefactors are used in the e-commerceindustry. To answer these questions, aninteractive, online questionnairecustomized for e-commerce companies wasdeveloped. It covers the areas oftraditional e-commerce, social media, mobile commerce and multiple channels. The individual results are presented atthe end of the questionnaire andcompared to the average result of thecompanies that have completed it. Aliterature review and an interview isthe basis for the questionnaire. Aweighting and a quantification of thequestions enabled comparison and wasconducted in order to generate businessvalue. Thereafter a pilot study wasconducted, in which thousands of ecommercecompanies were asked to fill inthe questionnaire, eventually resultingin 12 companies accepting the inquiry.A part of the results of the thesis isthe web questionnaire itself, where thecritical factors are presented. The webquestionnaire was weighted by the totalknowledge gathered by the literature andinterview study. The prioritized factorscan be seen in the questionnaire. Theresults of the pilot study show that 12companies have great potential toimprove their e-commerce since none ofthe entrants reached less than half ofthe questionnaire’s maximum points.

Decentralization and democratization of natural resources management programs in India : a study of self-governing resource user-groups

Enarth, Shashidharan 11 1900 (has links)
For many decades in India, natural resource management (NRM) programs were implemented by government bureaucracies in a centralized, top-down manner. The programs were unsustainable and suffered from resource use inefficiency and inequity. In the 1990s, under pressure from civil society organizations and multilateral agencies, the Government of India and many State Governments introduced policies that decentralized NRM programs and mandated active participation of users in the management of resources. When implementation responsibilities were transferred to resource user-groups many of the problems associated with centralization could be reduced significantly. However, despite their proven capacity of being better resource managers than government agencies, the user-groups encountered difficulties as self-governed people's organizations. Participation of users declined and problems of equity resurfaced in many user-groups. This dissertation describes the research that examines the causes of problems in the governance of user-groups in villages of Mehsana District in Gujarat. Using an eight-fold criteria of good governance, the study looks at eight Water Users Associations (WUAs) that took over irrigation management responsibilities from the Irrigation Department. This program of decentralization of irrigation is called Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM). The assessment of each WUA on each of the eight criteria reveals a close link between characteristics of good governance and the process of democratization. It can be seen that the WUAs that performed well on participation, equity, transparency, accountability, rule of law and consensus-orientation were less likely to face situations of dysfunction than the WUAs that performed poorly on these criteria. These criteria for good governance are also the core elements of democratic governance. At the same time, the case-studies reveal the tension between the democratization process that is attempted within the WUAs and the historical and cultural legacy of the feudal, autocratic and patriarchal society that rural India has been for many centuries. The thesis supports the argument, with empirical evidence, that the decentralization process can be sustainable only when user-groups institutionalize democratic processes and the early leaders behave in a democratic manner. It also suggests that the transition from an undemocratic institution to a democratic one can be enabled when external support agencies play an important catalytic role.

Lärarstudenters implicita och explicita fördomar gentemot invandrarelever

Carlsson, Rickard January 2008 (has links)
