[pt] A presente tese está inserida no campo dos estudos da cidade, que dialoga, necessariamente, com temas fronteiriços das ciências sociais, história, antropologia e sociologia urbana, da geografia cultural e do urbanismo. Sua perspectiva é a da longa duração, em chave macroestrutural, e busca aproximações entre a produção acadêmica e as políticas públicas urbanas. O tema aqui pesquisado é a Avenida Brasil, no Rio de Janeiro, as disputas envolvendo seu processo de construção ainda na primeira metade do século XX, o sentido da expansão da cidade para o subúrbio, a aposta no fluxo citadino via transporte rodoviário, a execução de políticas públicas para a produção de moradias das camadas populares em seu entorno, sua ocupação territorial e caracterização como símbolo de uma cidade injusta em que impera a desigualdade social. Analisar a Avenida Brasil é também olhar para o subúrbio, objeto periférico dos estudos sobre a cidade. A ocupação desta faixa da cidade por indústrias e moradias populares, logo resultaram em expansão das favelas na cidade, assim como a necessidade pela luta e publicização da demanda de seus moradores por melhores condições de vida. / [en] The present thesis is inserted in the field of cities studies, which necessarily dialogues with frontier themes of social sciences, history, anthropology and urban sociology, cultural geography and urbanism. Its perspective is the long duration, in a macro-structural framework, and seeks to approximate academic production and urban public policies. The theme studied here is the Avenida Brasil, in Rio de Janeiro, the disputes involving its construction process in the first half of the twentieth century, the sense of expansion of the city to the suburb, the believes on the city flow through road transport, execution of public policies for the production of social housing for the popular strata in their surroundings, their territorial occupation and characterization as a symbol of an unjust city in which social inequality reigns. Analyzing the Avenida Brasil is also looking at the suburb, a peripheral object of cities studies. The occupation of this strip of the city by industries and popular housing soon resulted in the expansion of favelas in the city, as well as the need to fight and publicize the demand of its residents for better living conditions.

O lugar é uma das mais importantes categorias espaciais da Geografia. Assim como a própria concepção de espaço, a de lugar se inscreve no escopo de diferentes análises geográficas; mas, é à Geografia Humanista que a categoria de lugar está fortemente relacionada. O enfoque geográfico humanista coloca o lugar em situação de destaque, ao tratar sobre a relação afetiva do homem com o espaço e a pluralidade das experiências que transformam este espaço em lugar. Entende-se, a partir dessa perspectiva, que o lugar é uma realização essencialmente sentimental e que são as vivências pessoais e as experiências íntimas que lhe atribuem densidade. Nesse aspecto, o geógrafo humanista Yi-Fu Tuan adota o neologismo topofilia, a fim de melhor caracterizar o amor humano pelos lugares. Para o homem, os laços topofílicos fazem transparecer um conjunto de sentimentos entranhados: são memórias, nostalgias, afinidades e valores que subsistem como lembranças do passado, realizações do presente e/ou futuras ações. Para a Geografia, a topofilia é um sopro de Humanismo que está amparado pela concepção do espaço simbólico, relacional e afetivo, e que tem o tempo como categoria intrínseca. A Geografia Humanista reconhece que os lugares dos homens são tão diversos quanto os seus sonhos. Aliás, o ser humano não cessa de sonhar com lugares que dêem espessura e significado à sua existência pessoal. Esses lugares inscrevem-se na intimidade ou na amplidão, pois, assim como os homens, resguardam dentro de si a imensidão e a particularidade. Do mesmo modo que a rua e o bairro são espaços acolhedores e pessoais, uma cidade ou um país também são capazes de comportar tais sentimentos. Por sinal, a urbe engendra apropriadamente a máxima do lugar dos sonhos, porque oferece múltiplas possibilidades de realização pessoal. Os lugares urbanos são espaços de intenso envolvimento, deflagradores de aspirações, conquistas, amores e ódio. Nesse panorama, a Avenida Paulista, um dos lugares-símbolo da cidade de São Paulo, surge como exemplo do quão sentimental pode ser um lugar. Seja por conta de sua importância para a história dessa metrópole, seja por sua relação com a vida dos paulistanos nos dias atuais, a Paulista representa o sonho de um lugar ideal. A Avenida Paulista é um lugar chamado pelo mesmo nome que dá ao povo do estado de São Paulo um sentimento de unidade. Entretanto, não é apenas pelo fato de serem homônimos que se pode dizer que a Paulista é o paulista, e sim porque ambos abrigam um teor de humanidade que lhes é absolutamente análogo. Ora, o lugar, a mais humana das categorias geográficas, reflete toda a diversidade das ações praticadas pelo homem no espaço. De modo que se pode afirmar que lugares são pessoas, porque estas são cada um dos lugares que realizam durante a vida / Place is one of the most important spatial categories of Geography. As well as the conception of space, the conception of place fits the scope of different geographic analyses; however, the category of place is strongly related to Human Geography. The Human Geographic focus puts place in a prominent situation, by dealing with the affective relationship between man and space and the plurality of experiences which transform this space into place. From this perspective, it can be understood that place is essentially a sentimental realisation and that the personal, intimate experiences are what gives place its density. Thus, human geographer Yi-Fu Tuan adopts the neologism \"topophilia\" in order to better characterize the human love for places. For men, topophiliac ties bring up a set of deep feelings: these are memories, nostalgia, affinity and values which stand as reminders of the past, of achievements of the present, and/or of future actions. For Geography, topophilia is a breath of Humanism that is supported by the conception of symbolic, relational and affective space, having time as an intrinsic category. Human Geography recognizes that mens places are as diverse as their dreams. Moreover, human beings do not cease to dream of places which give consistency and meaning to their personal existence. These places fall into vastness or intimacy, because like men, places preserve both immensity and particularity within. Just as the street and the neighborhood are cozy and personal spaces, a city or a country are also able to carry such feelings.Incidentally, the city properly consists the place of dreams axiom, seeing as it offers many possibilities for personal fulfillment. Urban places are spaces of intense involvement, trigger of aspirations, achievements, love and hate. In this scenario, the Paulista Avenue, one of the symbolic places of the city of São Paulo, emerges as an example of how a place can be sentimental. Whether it is because of its importance to the history of this metropolis, or because of its relationship to the life of the paulistanos nowadays, Paulista Avenue represents the dream of an ideal place. Paulista Avenue is a place called by the same name that gives the people from the state of São Paulo a sense of unity. However, not only is it for the fact that they are homonyms that it can be said that Paulista is the paulista, but also because both convey a quite similar level of humanity. Therefore, the place, the most human of geographic categories, reflects all the diversity of actions taken by man in space. Thus, it would not be an exaggeration to say that places are people, because the latter are each place that they realize throughout life.

Catalyzing urban redevelopment on Washington Avenue - St. Louis, MissouriZundel, Bryan Christopher January 1900 (has links)
Master of Regional and Community Planning / Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning / Huston Gibson / In many urban redevelopment discussions, people often refer to a catalyst as the impetus for redevelopment. Unfortunately, no standard definition of an urban redevelopment catalyst exists, so liberal use of the term catalyst persists. As distinguished in Dr. Timothy Chapin’s dissertation, Urban Revitalization Tools: Assessing the Impacts of Sports Stadia at the Microarea Level, the impacts of sports stadia (widely considered catalysts) are often overstated. In order to have valuable arguments over the impacts of presupposed catalytic activities, we need to understand the defining characteristics of an urban redevelopment catalyst and utilize a consistent process for examining them. This study identifies these characteristics and develops a methodology from which others may study catalysts. Included in the study are both narrative and tangible evidence from which researchers may decipher catalytic characteristics and events. In order to explore this analytic method, a case study was necessary.
The revitalization of Washington Avenue (in downtown St. Louis, Missouri) provided an excellent opportunity to implement and test the process. Washington Avenue went from decrepit in the early 1980s to receiving the honor of being a Great Street by the American Planning Association in 2011. By delving into the developmental history of Washington Avenue, the process verified urban redevelopment catalytic characteristics, the methodology and the presence of small-scale urban redevelopment catalysts. From these findings, (coupled with a preexisting, dominant discussion focused large-scale catalysts) we see the value of small, organic development. The study prompts further exploration of urban redevelopment catalysts, especially in regards to smaller catalysts. It also suggests a new line of thinking for urban redevelopment dynamics, thus guiding future research to focus on understanding the processes of urban redevelopment.

Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) in downtown areas is a distinct form of new development, creating walkable districts and 24-hour neighborhoods. A new streetcar on Loyola Avenue in the New Orleans Central Business District was planned to encourage new development in the area. By analyzing the current land uses and values, projections of future change predict over $500 million in added value. For this development to become a successful TOD, policies must encourage uses that generate ridership and increase walkability. Although the Loyola corridor has many historic attributes of a transit-oriented downtown, it currently lacks neighborhood identity. The new development associated with the Loyola streetcar has the potential to become a downtown TOD.

From the Northeast Tourism Development Program (Prodetur/NE) perspective, Beira-Mar Avenue rehabilitation project aims the tourism infrastructure improvement, integrating a set of actions for the historical, cultural and tourist valorization, implementing access facilities, new attractions, comfort and safety. Considering this scenario, this research aims to investigate and evaluate the Rehabilitation Project of Av. Beira-Mar in Fortaleza influence and its socioeconomic impact. The focus is to identify, from Prodetur/NE financing, prospects and future change possibilities in the economic and social dynamics of the new project licensees, especially to Craft Fair and Fish Market workers. It is considered the hypothesis that investments do not meet the interests of the workers, to the extent that the breeding values are intended primarily to infrastructure projects directly benefiting the tourist trade (the hotel and restaurant sectors) and the higher purchasing areas (A and B social classes). Thus, the socio-economic development to small traders and street vendors would be low and slow return.

Previous issue date: 2014-10-01 / The research aims to survey, analyze and criticize the recent transformations taking
place in São Paulo urban landscape, specifically in a selected axis located in the
southwestern area of the city, historically it's most valued location. The selected axis
connects Downtown and Marginal Pinheiros, starting in Martins Fontes St.,
continuing through Augusta St., Colômbia St., Europa Avenue and, finally, reaches
Cidade Jardim Avenue. Several urban morphologies take place all over this axis,
formed and consolidated during the 20th century, and important mutations are
happening in this pre-existing urban fabric. Such transformations reveal themselves
as a result of the constructive laws, and also of the society action which in several
ways happens to encourage, through the products of the real estate market or the
way of life citizens chose. The built landscape throughout the Augusta St. axis is now
changing, specifically in sections Baixo Augusta and Cidade Jardim, through intense
verticalization and homogenization of architectural language and products offered,
compared to the pre-existing landscape. / A pesquisa tem por objetivo o levantamento, análise e crítica das transformações
recentes na paisagem construída pelas quais São Paulo tem passado,
especificamente em um eixo selecionado de seu quadrante sudoeste, historicamente
dos mais valorizados da cidade. O eixo selecionado para estudo liga a região central
à Marginal Pinheiros, iniciando-se na Rua Martins Fontes, continuando pela Rua
Augusta, Rua Colômbia, Avenida Europa e finalmente culminando na Avenida
Cidade Jardim. Diversas são as morfologias urbanas presentes ao longo desse eixo,
que se formou e se consolidou ao longo do século XX, e importantes são as
mutações que as transformações recentes têm trazido a esses tecidos préexistentes.
Tais transformações revelam-se resultado da legislação construtiva que
as viabiliza, bem como da ação da sociedade que de diversos modos as incentiva,
seja através da incorporação de determinado produto imobiliário, ou do modo de
vida escolhido pelos cidadãos. A paisagem construída tem passado por mutações
em todo o eixo da Rua Augusta, especificamente nos trechos Baixo Augusta e
Cidade Jardim, através de intensa verticalização e homogeneização da linguagem e
produtos arquitetônicos oferecidos, quando comparada à paisagem pré-existente.

IN BLACK AND WHITE: RICHMOND’S MONUMENT AVENUE RECONTEXTUALIZED THROUGH THE PHOTOGRAPHIC ARCHIVEHensley, Charlsa Anne 01 January 2019 (has links)
The release of the Monument Avenue Commission Report in July, 2018 was the culmination of over one year of research and collaboration with community members of Richmond, Virginia on how the city should approach the contentious history of Monument Avenue’s five Confederate centerpieces. What the monuments have symbolized within the predominately rich, white neighborhood and outside of its confines has been a matter of debate ever since they were unveiled, but the recent publicity accorded to Confederate monuments has led to considerations by historians, city leaders, and the public regarding recontextualization of Confederate monuments.
Recontextualization of the monuments should not only consider the city’s current constituency, but also the lives, testimonies, and representations of Richmond’s African- American residents as the monuments were built. A comparative case study of photographs from various institutional archives in Richmond, Virginia, depicting late- nineteenth and early twentieth-century scenes from the city’s history reveals that while Monument Avenue and its Confederate celebrations benefitted the city’s upper-class white constituency, its messages extended far beyond Richmond and its Confederate veterans. By bringing to light images and testimonies from the archive that highlight African-American presence, a counter-narrative emerges detailing the construction of power in post-Reconstruction Richmond through Monument Avenue.
