The Ella Effect: An Activist's Journey Towards Mentoring Progressive Black Masculinities Into Motion

Williams, Derrick Lamonte 01 January 2009 (has links)
This study examines my activist journey in developing a grassroots men's antiviolence and multi-generational mentoring group called the Progressive Masculinities Mentors. I draw upon Athena Mutua's intersectional vision of Progressive Black Masculinities into motion which reimagines traditional black masculinity in ways that move beyond negative social scripts in order for black men to reach their full humanity. Modeled on the activist work of Ella Jo Baker, a community organizer, within the civil rights movement, I advocate principles and practices of grassroots community mentoring as a way to bring about social change. "The Ella Effect" refers to the practices, ideas, and life philosophies of Baker which both inspire and inform my activist work of mentoring young college age men and local boys to become progressive men. Hip Hop music and culture is employed as a pedagogical strategy to engage young black males about problematic issues of black masculinity in an effort to create alternative modes that communicate love, compassion, and hope.

Tony Baker & Alex Iles: Interviews with Two Trombonists who Excel as Performers and Soloists in Classical and Jazz settings

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: The ability of musicians to perform well in multiple musical styles is increasingly common and necessary. This paper profiles two trombonists who have gone well beyond the ability to function in multiple genres, and are instead considered significant artists. Tony Baker and Alex Iles were chosen to be profiled for this project because both have achieved recognition as solo artists in the genres of classical music and jazz and have performed on international stages as soloists. They also have significant ensemble experience in both classical and jazz settings and are active teachers as well. Both hold-high profile positions that have helped grow their reputations as performers: Mr. Baker as a professor at one of the largest music schools in the United States, the University of North Texas, and Mr. Iles as a highly in-demand freelance musician in Los Angeles. This paper presents interviews with both trombonists that investigate their development as musicians and soloists in both classical music and jazz. They are asked to describe the benefits and challenges of performing at a high level in both styles, and how these have affected their musical voices. Common traits found in their responses are examined, and recommendations are created for musicians seeking stylistic versatility. / Dissertation/Thesis / D.M.A. Music 2012

Josephine Baker: a psychobiographical study

Eckley, Shannon Rose January 2012 (has links)
Psychobiographies examine an entire full life, from birth to death, with the aim of understanding the psychological development of that life. Psychobiographical research is a qualitative method of research, and is done by the use of both biography, and the application of relevant psychological theory. While the scientific merit of this type of research continues to be questioned and debated, interest in this area of research continues to grow on both a national, and international level. This particular research study aimed to explore the extraordinary and inspiring life of slave, dancer, singer, lover, soldier and mother, Josephine Baker (1906 – 1975), by applying Alfred Adler’s (1929) theory of personality namely, Individual Psychology. Josephine Baker was chosen by means of purposive sampling. The research study made use of a qualitative psychobiographical research method, which aimed to explore and describe the lived life and personality development of Josephine Baker, in terms of Alfred Adler’s (1929) theory of Individual Psychology. The data collection for this research study made use of a framework, as a means of selecting relevant data which formed a matrix, which in turn became a descriptive framework to organise and integrate the data (see Appendix A). The analysis thereof was done by the means of analytic generalisation (Yin, 1994). To assist in identifying salient data, analytical criteria namely, Alexander’s (1988) guidelines for the extraction of salient data were utilised (see Appendix B). This model also assisted in ensuring an accurate and complete description of Josephine Baker’s life in relation to the psychological theory used namely Alfred Adler’s theory of Individual Psychology. The findings of the study indicate that Josephine’s life paralleled Adler’s (1929) theory in many ways, and also indicated that the person she became was also strongly influenced by many familial, social, historical and cultural events of the time. This study has therefore shown that to date, there is still great value and relevance in Adler’s (1929) theory of Individual Psychology, even though it was proposed and developed almost a century ago. Consequently, recommendations regarding further psychiobiographical research in this area in the future have been made.

Barría Sandoval, Pilar Andrea January 2010 (has links)

A style analysis of David Baker's composition for cello and percussion: "Singers of Songs-Wears of Dreams"

Van Wyk, Ilse-Mari, Van Wyk, Ilse-Mari January 1989 (has links)
David Baker is a prominent American composer, noted for his fusion of jazz elements with western art music. The focus of this study is on his composition for cello and percussion, Singers of Songs-Weavers of Dreams, where this fusion is particularly evident. Baker's writing for the cello is most innovative and of considerable historical significance. Firstly, he introduced the cello to the realm of jazz, and secondly, revolutionized fingering patterns in order to accomodate jazz modal sequences and improvisational patterns. This composition is truly a milestone in the cello literature, unprecedented in style and technical innovation, and deserving of more attention.

The polyp and the role of the early biology in the second half of the XVIIIth century : around Trembley and Baker’s experiments

Basuyaux, Cédric 07 December 2010 (has links)
The amazing abilities of regeneration of the fresh-water hydra were discovered in 1740 by Abraham Trembley. They were to give way to a succession of experiments in order to specify the modes of regeneration and of reproduction, and a place was to be found for the polyp in the classifications. In England, Henry Baker was to confirm those properties by similar experiments, and publish them in the first work dedicated to the polyp, with the help of his network of correspondents. The illustrations and the vulgarisation of all these experiments were to make their fast diffusion easier, and give rise to numerous experiments on the regeneration of other organisms, some attempts of explanation, and the long-term insertion of the polyp into the debates around living matter.
