The Effect of Color on Working Memory Performance

Galvez, Michelle 01 August 2015 (has links)
This paper explores the effect of color on working memory performance. Interest in Baker-Miller pink surged with the finding by Schauss (1979) that it reduced aggression in aggravated detainees. However, research behind Baker-Miller pink has been influenced by biases and methodological errors. Its effects are likely overstated. Red and blue have also been studied for their effects on creativity, approach-avoidance conflict, detail-orientation, and most importantly, stress. Further research has been conducted on the effects of relaxation on cognition, with the conclusion that increased relaxation leads to improvements in working memory performance. This paper tests the effect of color on working memory performance. Accuracy on the n-back was compared across 4 colors: pink, red, blue, and black. No significant differences in accuracy were found in any of the color conditions, though the main effect of load was significant. Future research can increase the sample size and utilize a cognitive task that is inherently stressful.

METABÓLITOS SECUNDÁRIOS EM VERNONIA TWEEDIEANA BAKER / SECUNDARY METABOLIC OF VERNONIA TWEEDIEANA BAKER

Zanon, Ricardo Basso 07 April 2006 (has links)
The species Vernonia tweedieana Baker is an herbaceous plant widely distributed in the plains of Paraguai, Argentina and south of Brazil and popularly known as assa-peixe . This plant is used in traditional medicine as an expectorant medicament. So far, this plant was not studied on the phytochemical and biological point of view. This work is a contribution to the phytochemical study of the Asteraceae. The leaves of V. tweedieana Baker were collected in march of 2004, in Ijuí Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and identified by Dr. Geraldo C. Coelho (UNIJUÍ). The respective voucher specimen was deposited in the herbarium of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM)-RS (code SMDB 9536). The leaves (1.900 g) were dried in an air circulating stove at 40 ºC, pulverized in mill and extracted by maceration with 65% EtOH at room temperature for seven days. The ethanolic extract was filtered and the ethanol was removed. Finally, the extract was retake in water and partitioned using organics solvents with increased polarity: CH2Cl2, AcOEt and n-BuOH. We report the isolation and identification of six constituents of the CH2Cl2 fraction: the triterpenes a-amyrin, b-amyrin and lupeol and the steroids b- sitosterol, stigmasterol and spinasterol. The flavanone eriodictyoI was isolated from the AcOEt fraction. The constituents were identified through spectral data of the infra-red, GC-MS, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and DEPT. No deaths and other signs of toxicity and adverse effect were observed in the evaluation of acute toxicity with doses up to 5.000 mg/kg, that is the maximum dose for acute oral toxicity test for extract of plants. Also, through DPPH method, AcOEt and n-BuOH fractions of the plant showed good antioxidant activity with IC50 22.52 and 17.44 mg/mL, respectively.

Efeito de fosfato sôbre a multiplicação de Saccharomyces cerevisiae em cultivo contínuo / Effect of phosphate on the multiplication of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in continuous cultivation

Sato, Sunao 08 November 1983 (has links)
The influence of phosphate in a continuous culture was studied using mini-fermentor on the Saccharomyces cerevisiae multiplication. Dry matter, substrate concentration, specific substrate comsumption, specific carbon dioxide release, specific oxygen uptake rates and respiration quotient , as well as phosphorous content of the cells were measured in dependence on the dilutionrate. In continuous culture glicose-limited, of baker\'s yeast if the supply of phosphorous were restricted to a extent that residual phosphate in the medium could hardly be observed, the value of critical dilution rate was apparently enhanced from 0,23 h-1 to 0,32 h-1. This observation suggests a possible mediation by phosphate between anaerobic and aerobic functions of the baker\'s yeast.

Gaudron, Eric 08 December 2001 (has links) (PDF)

The picture of a paradox : rule-following after Wittgenstein and beyond

Niemi, Mark Harold 02 July 2008
My thesis aims to show that Wittgensteins view of rule-following involves a misleading picture of the rule. Since he saw the rule as something fundamentally independent of the rule-follower and something with which the rule-follower must comply, he inevitably became entangled in the paradox of compliance: that is, the idea that there must be something other than the rule-follower for rule-following to exist, even though he knew that there was really nothing there to guide the rule-follower or to measure his action. This paradox, dimly expressed within key Wittgensteinian problems relating to how one is able to follow a rule and whether one can follow a rule privately, eventually gave rise to the question over the social nature of rules. In that debate, Wittgensteins commentators vigorously argued, and continue to argue, whether the concept of rule-following presupposes a community of practitioners or not. I argue that this debate itself is misguided, since both sides in this debate take as their starting point a picture of compliance which sees rule and rule-follower as essentially different. In contrast to a compliant picture, I offer a different picture of the rule, which I will call the pliant picture of the rule. I will show that rule and rule-follower are fundamentally the same, and are related to one another, not socially or grammatically, but genealogically. This relationship of identity is in fact exhibited in the relationship between teacher and pupil, when the pupil becomes what his teacher already is through following his teacher. Although compliance can be said to define this relationship initially, it ends with the pupil learning, or becoming, the rule. To conceive of the rule in this way is to avoid the paradox of compliance; that is, it is to go beyond Wittgensteins picture of a paradox.

Jazz Babies, a Femme Fatale, and a Joad: Women and the Automobile in the American Modernist Era

Bremmer, Jessica 12 June 2006 (has links)
The 1920’s and 30’s saw the advent of the automotive era in America as Henry Ford’s vision of production and technological progress was fully realized. But the pleasure of automobility was initially afforded to a select few, and so the automobile revealed a growing chasm between social classes. Additionally, the automobile contributed to a transformation of the social ideology of gender as more and more women spent time in cars as passengers and as drivers. And while some viewed this ideological shift as a welcome change, many Americans worried about the negative implications of women in cars. Representations of automobiles in American literature reveal this juxtaposition between positive and negative reactions, and this thesis explores the cultural impetus behind this duality, as well as the manifestations of this duality in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, James M. Cain’s Double Indemnity, and John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath.
