Religious healing in the progressive era : literary responses to Christian ScienceSquires, Laura Ashley 10 July 2012 (has links)
This project examines the impact of Christian Science on American culture through the interventions of three major literary figures—Mark Twain, Willa Cather, and Theodore Dreiser—in the major debates that surrounded the movement. I argue that both Christian Science itself and the backlash against it were responses to the shifting conditions of modern life, that Christian Science and public discourse on it laid bare distinctly modern tensions and anxieties about changes in U.S. culture. Recent scholarship has pointed to the durability of the secularization thesis in the study of American literature despite the easily discernible impact of religion on American culture more broadly throughout the history of the U.S. This critical perspective has been particularly difficult to dismantle in the study of post-Civil War American literature. While it is true that Protestant Christianity lost some of its dominance in the late nineteenth century, this period also saw the rise of various influential heterodox religious groups, including Christian Science. This dissertation will make sense of why and how Christian Science captured the imaginations of so many Americans, including some of the greatest storytellers of the day. Christian Science was not the story of how a group of deluded fanatics attempted to turn back the tide of modernity. Instead, Christian Science was a product of modernity that provided a unique and, in its particular context, scientifically plausible response to the problem of human suffering. Furthermore, the controversies that surrounded Christian Science crystallized anxieties about the fate of individual autonomy in the modern U.S., the exercise of therapeutic and religious freedom, the concentration of individual wealth and power among a privileged few, the extension of American power abroad, and sexuality. Each chapter will examine a narrative or set of narratives that demonstrate how the Christian Science debates heightened and spoke to those concerns. / text

Approximation of Baker domains and convergence of Julia sets.Garfias-Macedo, Tania 25 October 2012 (has links)

Vocabulary, Voice Leading, and Motivic Coherence in Chet Baker's Jazz ImprovisationsHeyer, David, 1979- 12 1900 (has links)
xxv, 492 p. : music / This study applies Schenkerian theory to Chet Baker's jazz improvisations in order to uncover the melodic, harmonic, and contrapuntal hallmarks of his style. Analyses of short excerpts taken from multiple recorded improvisations reveal Baker's improvisational vocabulary, which includes recurring underlying structures that Baker embellishes in a wide variety of ways and places in a wide variety of harmonic contexts. These analyses also explore other traits (rhythmic, timbral, etc.) that appear in Baker's improvisations throughout his career. The dissertation culminates in three illustrative analyses that demonstrate the ways in which Baker constructs single, unified improvisations by masterfully controlling the long-range voice-leading tendencies of his improvised lines. As he weaves his vocabulary into these lines, he creates improvisations that unfold in a way that is logical, satisfying in the fulfillment of expectations, and motivically cohesive on multiple levels of structure. / Committee in charge: Steve Larson, Co-Chair;

Efeito da diacereína sobre a febre induzida por suspensão de Saccharomyces cerevisiae e por prostaglandina e2 em ratos jovens / Effect of diacerein on baker yeast- and prostaglandin e2-induced fever in young ratsPasin, Juliana Saibt Martins 10 June 2005 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Fever is a systemic response that results of a cascade of events that usually begins with pathogenic infection. Its development represents an important aspect of host defense that is mediated by the central nervous system. However, antipyretic medication are routinely prescribed because fever is associated with discomfort and anxiety, apart from to represent a iminent risk of febrile seizures. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of diacerein on body temperature and Baker s Yeast- and prostaglandin E2 -induced fever in young male Wistar rats (28 30 days of age). The subcutaneous administration of diacerein (5mg/kg) did not alter basal rectal temperature. This dose attenuated the febrile response induced by Baker Yeast, however did not reversed prostaglandin E2 -induced fever. Moreover, diacerein (5mg/kg, s.c.) delayed the onset of fever induced by Baker Yeast, but it did not prevent their installation. Interestingly, diacerein inhibited the leukocyte migration enhancement that occurred in the control group after the intraperitoneal administration of Baker s Yeast. These data suggest that the diacerein exert a weak antipyretic effect, which may occur through inhibition of synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines. However, further studies are needed to elucidate the precise mechanism of this antipyretic action of diacerein.

Background, Compositional Style, and Performance Considerations in the Clarinet Works of David Baker: Clarinet Sonata and Heritage: A Tribute to Great ClarinetistsLin, Sheng-Hsin 05 1900 (has links)
David Baker (b. 1931) is an educator, composer, and jazz legend. He has composed at least fifteen works that include the clarinet. Baker’s Clarinet Sonata (1989) has become a standard of clarinet repertoire and a popular recital inclusion. His chamber work Heritage: A Tribute to Great Clarinetists (1996) interweaves solo transcriptions of five jazz clarinetists. The compositional style of Baker’s clarinet works frequently links jazz and classical idioms. The two works discussed in this document are excellent examples for classically trained musicians who would like to increase their ability and experience in interpreting jazz styles.
The purpose of this document is: (1) to provide background, style, and performance considerations for Baker’s Clarinet Sonata and Heritage: A Tribute for Great Clarinetists, for Clarinet, Violin, Piano and Double Bass; (2) based on these style elements, to provide suggestions for interpreting jazz-style works for classically trained clarinetists; and (3) to archive Baker’s published and unpublished clarinet compositions. Appendices include transcripts of interviews with David Baker and other experts in this field (James Campbell, Rosana Eckert, Mike Steinel and Steven Harlos).

The Greek school books and bakery programs : vocational training engine but a cultural relays too (1994 - 2012.)Pouyade, Corinne 08 December 2017 (has links)
Nobody can deny that that the world of artisanal jobs and the university world are not meant or little to coincide. Craft jobs or the professional education are not priorities for universities.This thesis focuses in the training and job education of young future bakers in Greece and in particular about the study of Technologies Manuals and the Job Guide lines. With this thesis we want to answer the following question: In which way do the refusal of cultural influences of bread making in Greek Bakery Technology Manuals; isolates young students from a diachronic view of their profession which is such an important part in the transmission of Hellenism?The results we came upon in our studies are varied; first of all we found that manuals transmit only a vague and wrong vision of their cultural legacy; also, after a research in the Greek Language Tresor we have mended the diachronic of bakery preparations and of the Bakers profession. We had to then reposition all recipes proposed in the manuals to serve this cultural transmission.The real challenge of this thesis is to reintroduce the cultural legacy of the baker's profession in their training period so that these future artisans could realize that they participate with their own hands to the transmission of Hellenism.
