Configuration of the Pleistocene Surface Beneath Cat Island, Mississippi and Implications for Barrier Island Formation and Evolution

Rose, Kathryn 17 December 2010 (has links)
The mechanism of Holocene barrier formation aids in determining island geomorphologic responses to modifying climatic processes of the surrounding environment. The geometry and composition of local antecedent topography plays a role in barrier formation by providing an elevated base, nucleus for sedimentation and local sediment supply. Investigation of barriers' subsurface geology provides insight into island formation and evolution. High-resolution shallow seismic data acquired in the island's nearshore zone and interior canals, correlated with existing drillcore data, reveal that Cat Island, MS is situated over an Oxygen Isotope Stage 3 Phase 3 paleochannel located between two topographic high-grounds of the Pleistocene surface. Beach ridge strandplain sets on Cat Island provide additional evidence supporting the island's formation over a relict depocenter. A new, 4-stage model for Cat Island development and evolution incorporating the influence of pre-existing topographic high-grounds and abundant local sediment supply provided by a backfilling fluvial channel is presented here.

Florida's definition and subsequent calculatons of a public high school graduate: a critical race theory analysis

Unknown Date (has links)
On March 18, 2008, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Florida filed a class action lawsuit against The Palm Beach County School Board and its district superintendent on behalf of approximately 176,000 students under their jurisdiction (Schroeder v. The Palm Beach County School Board, 2008). The plaintiffs cited the defendants for their failure "to provide a uniform, efficient, safe, secure, and high quality education" (p. 7) as required by the Florida Constitution, Article IX, ß 1. They contended that their claim was substantiated by The School District of Palm Beach County's (SDPBC) dismal high school graduation rates. Spurred by the lawsuit, I wanted to understand the controversy surrounding high school graduation rates, in spite of decades of school reform measures, and why different calculation methods are utilized in the state of Florida. In respect to the latter point, I was curious to learn about the differences among graduation rate calculation methods and what impact, if any, these differences had on the reporting of high school graduation rates, particularly those for students of color. Black America's past and present reality in public education has illustrated the need for new paradigms to address the achievement gap promulgated by contextual factors that serve to impede the academic achievement of all students. The statistical analyses and Critical Race Realist perspective, which has evolved from Critical Race Theory when applied to policy research, offered in this study found Florida's definition and subsequent calculations of a public high school graduate to result in significant and consistent differences among graduation rates relative to student race and graduation rate calculation method. / by Terri N. Do sal e do sol: práticas turísticas e conflitos sociais na construção de um espaço turístico: Boa Viagem-PE (1950) / From the salt and the sun: tourism practices and social conflicts in the construction of a touristic space: Boa Viagem-PE (1950)

Alencar, Solange Lopes de 22 September 2016 (has links)
This study aims to understand the processes that promoted the transformation of tourism practices at Boa Viagem beach in Recife, capital of Pernambuco, during the 1950s, at a time marked by the end of Vargas Dictatorship (1937-1945) coeval with the end of World War II (1939-1945). The studied period comprises a democratic moment between two governments of exception, marked by the rise of leftist political forces, very strong in Pernambuco, plus the assumption of many popular movements, which created an environment of intense political disputes with the conservative forces of the traditional sugar aristocracy of Pernambuco, which was settled in the power of sugar mill owners. Seeking to recover what was seen as an economic backwardness, present in very high levels of poverty of most of the population, besides the weakening of the political elites in the national political framework, an incipient speech on tourism as part of the solution to local economic recovery rose slowly. Boa Viagem beach is the materialization of this speech application since it became the touristic area par excellence of Recife, leaving its characteristics of summer place for the local elites, but maintaining the characteristic of elitist area. Upon this scenery, we sought to rescue the kind of understanding the subjects had of what would be tourism; tourists; tourism industry; provision of touristic services, equipment and attractions; among other concepts still to be formed in the touristic environment itself. Furthermore, we questioned how deeply the relational aspect between the involved subjects - the State, the elite and the workers, as well as their participation - promoted the construction of Tourism as it was being practiced, through impositions, cooptation, negotiations and exclusions; besides the role of the beach as a phenomenon of a discourse of inclusion among the social classes, but of exclusion from the economic appropriation with the Tourism. In this sense, we used, as sources of research, newspapers and periodicals, especially the ones from the 1950s. The newspaper Diario de Pernambuco was our main source, as it was highly popular and was seen as the \"voice\" of the ruling classes, because it was able to propose speeches recognized by the elites, and at the same time to struck the working class in a disciplinarian way. As a tool for analysis, we embraced the concepts of Speech Analysis under Foucaults guidance, basing ourselves in a dialectical and relational perspective between subjects. In the end, we were able to conclude how the tourism built and practiced at Boa Viagem beach, from the displayed historical process, reinforced disputes over the appropriation of the beach area, becoming a touristic territory whose speech prefaces a supposed democratization of the use of beach for leisure, but which, however, excludes some of the subjects from the economic appropriation promoted by that Tourism

Between the \"movement\" and the \"calm\": rhythms of youth sociability in Flecheiras beach

Sousa, Flávia Alves de 14 October 2013 (has links)
This thesis proposes to reflect on the experiences of sociability of the young people who live in a small coastal town in urbanization process, triggered mainly by insertion of tourism in recent years. The changes that occur in the locality of Flecheiras, located in the municipality of Trairi, in the state of Ceará, comprise the extension and restructuring of spaces of leisure, as well as those related to aspects Socio-spatial, cultural and economic. The presence of another, between foreigners and Brazilians from other regions, represented the novelty and potentiated new interactive processes, privileged in moments of leisure. From the various methodological strategies based on the approach of the case study, the research had as objective to understand how these changes alter the sociability of young people and how these experiences relate to other dimensions of their lives, a time that these moments are mobilized interactive content and forms various. The field allowed thinking that the changes generated new forms of sociability, expressing tensions and conflicts between these young people, observed in \"jokey\" relations between those inhabitants of central Flecheiras and Barreiro, and in affective interactions, producing separations between the \"native\" and new areas of contact with the other. The changes, also, cause a different dynamic in the locality and contribute to that young people live a \"urban\" flashing between the calm and the movement, sharply demarcated, mainly, by days of festivities and greater movement of people from outside. Thus, the movement is eagerly awaited by the majority of local young people and generally are moments of approximation of values of large urban centers, images, money and technology, transforming the references locations regarding the style and way of life of these young people. These transformations have intersections with other dimensions of life, such as work and family. In this sense, the sociability means expression of changes and at the same time that focuses on the everyday experience of young people, the sociability translates ways of thinking, feeling and acting in response to these changes.

Proposta metodológica para análise da capacidade de carga de praias: estudo de caso em três praias do Guarujá (São Paulo) / Methodological proposal for an analysis of the load capacity of beaches: a case study in three beaches of Guarujá (São Paulo)

Silva, Juarez José da 23 November 2012 (has links)
The city of Guarujá, located in the Santos Metrpolitan Region (central coast of São Paulo) has as its maisn economic activities of the Port Complex-Retroportuário Santos-Cubatão-Guarujá, the Pole Poleindustrial Cubatão tourism and second homes. The city receives annually, a large tourist population, which many people may vary according to the periods of the seasons, long weekends and weekends sunn. In peiods of greater contribution to local infrastructure becomes insufficient and inadequate to support the demand. This study aims to study those boundaries and make a more detailed analysis of the socio-economic phenomena related to the load capacity of tree beaches near the city centers. Pitangueiras, Asturias and Tombo, the latter recently awarded the international seal of quality Blue Flag. The methodology provides for the evaluation of different load capacities (Load Capacities Load Capacity Recreation), through its indicators.

Morphologic Evolution and Alongshore Variability of Two Nourishment Projects in Southeast FL, USA

Unknown Date (has links)
For the last several decades, beach nourishment has been a widely implemented erosion mitigation strategy along many developed coastlines. Measuring subsequent patterns of erosion and accretion can help elucidate local sediment transport trends, improve time scale predictions of profile equilibration, decrease renourishment intervals, and adjust future engineering design of nourishments. This study evaluates the morphologic evolution of two beach nourishment projects (e.g., characterized as a full and partial nourishment) at the same location in Boca Raton, Florida using time series beach profiles, surface sediment samples, and wave data. More than 85% of sediment volume was retained within the full nourishment six months after project completion, compared to 50% retained eight months after completion of the partial nourishment. Wave energy largely influenced immediate post nourishment change. Profile equilibration was controlled by high-energy events (i.e., hurricanes) for both nourishments. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2018. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Beach of Iracema: factors of stagnation of the static state of a coastal touristic site / Praia de Iracema: fatores de estagnaÃÃo de um espaÃo turÃstico à Beira-Mar

Elsine Carneiro de Souza 16 August 2007 (has links)
Leisure has become something that people really value nowadays and it's not just about having fun anymore. Based on that, one can perceive that the urge for traveling and the search for confort and pleasure outside their habitat has generated the strengthening of the tourism industry in the world. With that in mind, it's of paramount importance to realize that the tourism sector can be a tool that will produce collective profits provide that it's accomplishe in a sustainable way. As an example of a touristic site in which the relationship between the use and occupation have not become sustainable just like Praia de Iracema in Fortaleza. One can perceive that since the foundation of this area, the object evidenced two cycles of life, one in which it was valued and an other at times being degrading and at other times both processes taking place simultaneously, being static nowadays. Considering the social relevance of the object, this present work aims at understanding which factors contributed to the static state of a coastal touristic site. In order for that to happen, it was necessary the historical analysis of the phases experienced in that neighborhood through newspapers, magazines and photos sources, having bibliography related to the theme as supplement. Eventually, the author came to the conclusion that due to its attractiveness, Praia de Iracema was the target of real state speculation with he aid of tourism industry united haphazardly, causing the predatory exploitation of its space. In order for that reality to be modified, it is necessary to compreend that the value of touristic sites cannot be aimed at the economical aspect nevertheless it must stem from subjective values of each one.

An Introduced Primate Species, Chlorocebus Sabaeus, in Dania Beach, Florida: Investigating Origins, Demographics, and Anthropogenic Implications of an Established Population

Unknown Date (has links)
Nonnative species are reshaping global ecosystems. The success of a nonnative species hinges on both biological and cultural variables. Primates represent a minority of nonnative species but warrant research to understand ecological implications and management solutions. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission recognizes three species of nonnative primates in Florida that include populations of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) in Marion County, squirrel monkeys (Saimiri spp.) in Broward County, and green monkeys (Chlorocebus sabaeus) in Broward County. This study focused on the Dania Beach C. sabaeus population. The goals of this study were to: 1) determine the geographical origins and species of the monkeys, 2) record demographics and determine population growth rate, 3) assess the public’s perception of monkeys, and 4) understand the influence of human provisioning on the population’s behavior and biology. Public surveys and direct field observations of social groups provided baseline data to show that unlike other introduced primates (e.g., macaques in Marion County and green monkeys in the Caribbean), the Dania Beach monkey population has strong public support and is at risk of extinction within the next 100 years. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2019. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection
