Exploring Co-management : A Minor Field Study on Lake Victoria Beach Management Unit in Ggaba, Kampala, Uganda / Hantering av Victoriasjön som gemensam fiskeresurs : En MFS-studie om samförvaltningen vid Ggaba Beach Management Unit

Lundström, Linnéa, Nordlund, Sara January 2016 (has links)
To manage common resources such as water bodies, forests and the air is complex since several stakeholders are involved and affected by the use of the resource. One way to manage common resources is through co-management. Co-management is a decentralized method that empowers the local level and enables collaboration between the government and the local community. Co-management within fishing communities can be realized through so called Beach Management Units (BMUs). Around Lake Victoria, there are 1087 BMUs. One of these BMUs is located in Ggaba, Kampala, Uganda and the purpose of this study is to highlight benefits and shortcomings connected to co-management within fisheries. The study aims to explore if and how sustainability aspects are tackled through the co-management of fisheries. The data was collected using qualitative semi-structured interviews where six BMU members contributed with their experiences. In addition, data was collected from a qualitative content analysis on two BMU guideline documents, representing the central level. The results showed that the Ggaba BMU provides a platform for creating control through collaboration. The local levels’ perception on co-management within fisheries seems to correspond with the central level’s aim of the management. Another indication is that the BMU has brought upon positive effects on economic, social and ecological aspects on the society of Ggaba. However, corruption and illegal fishing are two identified barriers which seems to limit the function of the Ggaba BMU and the level of co-management.

Vliv pohybového tréninku na motorickou výkonnost dětí / Inlunce of movement training on motor performace in children

Berkiová, Martina January 2013 (has links)
Title: Influence of movement training on motor performance in children Objectives: The author set out to verify whether beach volleyball influences the basic elements of health-related fitness ("HRF"), develops motor literacy in selected children of upper school age, and if so, how. Methods: The author employed empirical quantitative and qualitative research. The basic motor literacy level was identified using the UNIFITTEST (6-60) testing battery. The quantitative analysis relied on evaluating a video recording. The analyzed sample comprised children aged 13 who regularly play beach volleyball, and children of the same age engaging in no regular motor activity. Results: The author concluded that beach volleyball influenced strength, speed and endurance of the basic elements of HRF in members of the sample. At the same time, beach volleyball contributed to cultivating their motor literacy without negative impact on their school attendance. Keywords: movement, fitness, movement deficit, movement benefits, motor tests, motor literacy, survey, quantitative and qualitative analysis, beach volleyball.

Cement stabilization of organic soils for controlling secondary compression behavior

Unknown Date (has links)
Western Palm Beach County, FL is characterized by thick deposits organic soils at shallow depths. Because of their high void ratio and compressibility, these soils undergo large primary consolidation followed by extended periods of secondary compression causing excessive premature structural distress. Although soil stabilization has been largely used with remarkable results in soft, expansive and non-organic soils, limited research and practice exist in the implementation with highly organic soils. The main motivation of this research was to investigate the effects of cement stabilization on the compressibility behavior of organic rich soils, and develop mix design criteria for optimum cement contents necessary to induce the desired engineering behavior. This optimized mix design may provide guidelines for Deep Mixing Methods in organic soils. / by Juan Ramirez. / Thesis (M.S.C.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2009. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. Morphodynamique littorale haute fréquence par imagerie vidéo

Almar, Rafael 18 September 2009 (has links)
This thesis presents a study on short term (day to month) beach dynamic. Until the emergence of video systems, and despite its major role, this dynamic remained mainly unknown due to the lack of a suited observation technology. The new possibilities allowed by video imagery, comprising high-frequency observation, are revolutionary. In this thesis, a tool is introduced that, from the measure of nearshore hydrodynamics, estimates accurately nearshore topography for a large area (km) and at high frequency (day). This thesis shows that nearshore sand features interact and cannot be studied in isolation. We show that sand features dynamic can be dominantly non-uniform in the longshore direction, even for large waves. This dynamic is crucial because it contributes to cross-shore sand exchanges. For a double-barred beach, more than wave height, tidal range variations drive inner bar dynamic during stormy conditions. Our results suggest that a large part of the beach temporal variability is short term.

A proposed expanded green space plan using GIS for natural areas in Palm Beach County

Unknown Date (has links)
In the past 25 years, Palm Beach County has acquired more than 31 million acres of public preserves consisting of numerous native habitats that are home to threatened and endangered flora and fauna. Both endemic habitats and plant species benefit from expansion and connectivity through the adoption of native plants in surrounding areas. The next step in conserving these protected, larger areas is to identify ways to connect them in order to reduce their isolation and improve their likelihood of continued ecosystem health. This study aims to perform an analysis using a GIS database of Palm Beach County's Eastern urban areas to determine additional vegetation that currently exists on public lands and private preserves and to analyze and classify the vegetation for its potential conservation role, either as ; preserves, buffers, corridors or clusters connecting and enhancing existing natural areas. / by Corrie Rainyn. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2012. / Includes bibliography. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / System requirements: Adobe Reader.

Côtes sablo-vaseuses sous influence deltaïque de l'Amazone et du Mékong : dynamique morpho-sédimentaire, stabilité et aménagement / Sandy-mud coasts under deltaic influence of the Amazon and the Mekong : morpho-sedimentary dynamics, stability and landuse

Brunier, Guillaume 11 December 2015 (has links)
This thesis is a geomorphic study of two separate sites associated with two large deltas: the Amazon and the Mekong, with a focus on a beach and chenier in French Guiana integrated into the mud dispersal system of the Amazon, and on the links between destabilization of the Mekong delta shoreline and morpho-bathymetric changes in the deltaic channels under increasing human influence. The study of Montjoly beach in French Guiana was carried out using a combination of an innovative approach in SfM (Structure from Motion) airborne photogrammetry, hydrodynamic and bathymetric measurements, and wave propagation modelling over the nearshore bathymetry. The results show the strong potential of SfM photogrammetry in high-resolution morphometric and sediment budget surveys of sandy beach, and confirm a previously proposed model of beach rotation under mud-bank influence. The second field site in French Guiana, a retreating chenier over a muddy abandoned polder formerly a rice fields, work based on a multi-decadal analysis of satellite images combined with short-term field topographic and hydrodynamic measurements highlighted high rates of chenier migration (up to 160 m a year) and retreat mechanisms over the muddy substrate due to its rheology.A GIS-based analysis of bathymetric changes in the deltaic channels of the Mekong over a 10-year period (1998 to 2008) enabled the quantification of a net loss of 200 million m3 of sediments and an increase in the mean depth of the channels, which appears as unnatural and due to sand mining. These important sediment extractions have serious repercussions on sediment supply to the Mekong delta coast, which shows important rates of erosion.

Modélisation d'érosion côtière : application à la partie Ouest du tombolo de Giens / Coastal erosion modeling : The case of the western tombolo of Giens

Than, Van Van 18 September 2015 (has links)
The objective of this thesis is the determination of the causes of sea erosion phenomenon, and the production of policy proposals for the protection of the beach. The study begins with the collection and analysis of all available data, to find evolution rules of tombolo of Giens. Which aims to explain how the hydrodynamic processes and sediment transport occur. Then MIKE modeling software was applied to confirm the hypothesis and get a better understanding of the dynamics at work in the Western tombolo. Then, we coupled factors simultaneously: waves, coastal currents and sediment transport for different regimes of wave and wind in MIKE 21. Finally, the possibility of stabilizing the Western tombolo is discussed to give suggestions on the choice of solutions.

Models Describing the Sea Level Rise in Key West, Florida

Jean, Karm-Ervin 13 November 2015 (has links)
Lately, we have been noticing an unusual rise in the sea level near many Floridian cities. By 2060, scientists believe that the sea level in the city of Key West will reach between 22.86 to 60.96 centimeters (Strauss et al. 2012). The consequences of sea level rise are unpleasant by gradually tearing away our beaches and natural resources, destroying our homes and businesses, etc. Definitively, a continual increase of the sea level will affect everyone either directly or indirectly. In this study, the sea level measurements of four Floridian coastal cities (including Key West) are collected in order to describe their trend toward sea level rise over the past 100 years. After the comparisons, some models describing the sea level rise in the city of Key West, Florida, are developed. Any inferences for these above cities may well be extended to similar ones.
