A Case Study on Problems and Coping Strategies of Two Beginning TCSL Teachers

Unknown Date (has links)
More and more people are engaging in Teaching Chinese as Second Language these years. There are many studies on teacher’s development which reveal that the beginning phase is the key phase in a teacher’s career. This study aims to understand the problems beginning teachers might encounter and what are their coping strategies by interviewing two cases. The major findings reveal that their problems originate from three aspects: (1) profession technique: lack understanding of students’ level and their reactions in class; classroom climate (2) self-emotion: lack of confidence; skeptical of self (3) working conditions: unstable income and the lack of welfare And their coping strategies are: asking their colleagues, observing other seniors, talking directly with students. At the end of the thesis, suggestions are given to the TCSL teacher training foundations and language center, to help TCSL teachers get through this unstable phase of teaching career.

Between 'prophet' and 'professional' : imagery and identification amongst beginning teachers in Lebanon

Natout, Mahmoud January 2014 (has links)
This study explores the motivations, perceptions, and imagery of beginning teachers in Lebanon. It foregrounds the importance of ‘images’ as potentially useful conceptual tools for understanding the developing identities of beginning teachers. The research consists of in-depth, semi-structured interviews in which student-teachers are encouraged to reflect on their own and other people’s views and perceptions about teaching. The thesis places the students-teachers’ personal portraits of teaching within broader cultural-historical representations of teachers in Lebanon and examines how the student-teachers deal with such representations while still in training. The core research questions focus on the participants’ motivations as well as the underlying cultural, social, and political factors that influence their views and perceptions about teaching. The research questions were designed to explore the various images of teachers and teaching that the students draw on in their personal portraits. Biographical information as well as students’ experiences at the time of training were explored for this purpose. The findings suggest that student-teachers’ developing identities emerge through their identification with competing images and representations of teaching and teachers. These images cut across various contexts, temporalities, and imagined settings in the student-teacher portraits, linking personal, educational and professional experiences. Many of the images synthesized large amounts of experiences and knowledge about teaching and contained gendered, religious, affective and interpersonal dimensions. Finally, the thesis offers a new way of conceptualizing images. This study hopes to help teacher education programs gain greater insight into beginning teachers’ thinking, motivations and developing identities.

Professional experiences of beginning home economics teachers in Malawi : a grounded theory approach

Kunkwenzu, Esthery Dembo 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (Curriculum Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / This dissertation is an interpretive analysis of the professional experiences of six beginning Home Economics teachers in Malawi. The specific aim of the study was to explore the opportunities, challenges and problems of the teachers in their first year of teaching. The data for the study were developed using a triangulation of five research methods, including a questionnaire, face-to-face interviews, classroom observations, teachers’ reflective diaries and focus group discussions. Grounded theory was used as the methodology and analytical framework of the study. Research in teacher education acknowledges that learning to teach is a complex process (Calderhead & Shorrock, 1997; Flores, 2001; Flores & Day, 2006; Solmon, Worthy & Carter, 1993) and that the first year of teaching has a very important impact on the future careers of beginning teachers (Stokking, Leender, De Jong and Van Tarwijk, 2003; Solmon et al., 1993). The transition from the teacher training institution to the secondary school classroom is characterised by a type of reality shock in which the ideals that were formed during teacher training are replaced by the reality of school life (Lortie, 1975). The results in this study point at the school context as the ‘reality definer’ in the professional experiences of the teachers. The findings also support previous studies of beginning teachers which have emphasised the vulnerability of beginning teachers and show the first year of teaching as a ‘sink or swim experience’. However, the results show a unique relationship between the school context and school expectations. In this dissertation I contend that it is this relationship that was fundamental to the professional experiences of the six beginning Home Economics teachers. In the dissertation I present a three-stage substantive-level theory of the beginning teachers’ experiences and argue for the redefinition of the perception of teacher learning in Malawi: from a definition of pre-service teacher education as teacher learning, to teacher learning as a ‘triadic process’ comprised of teacher education, school induction and continued professional development.

Kvalita výuky začínajících učitelů fyziky / The Quality of Teaching by Beginning Physics Teachers

Martínková, Jana January 2016 (has links)
The strategic goal of the research is to contribute to the search for connections between the teaching quality and other factors, and to deepen the understanding of the context of the teaching quality. The research question is posed as follows: Which parameters of the quality of physics teaching are typical for beginning teachers? To answer the question a mixed method research design was used and a case study was chosen as the basic research plan. An ex-post-facto research was chosen as the design of the quantitative part of the research, and the data was collected using the method of pedagogical observation. Regarding the qualitative part, the data was collected using semi-structured interviews. The research sample consisted of four physics teachers, teaching in grammar schools, who have recently graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University. This research shows that there are parameters of the quality of physics teaching which the teachers have in common (e.g. high level of physics expertise, lecturing, mathematics, abstraction, knowledge structure). Besides common features of the teaching quality of the selected teachers there are certain differences (e.g. teaching aids, experiments, work with text, student's activity, demands placed on students).

O conceito de \"pessoa humana\" no âmbito da bioética brasileira / The human person concept within Brazilian bioethics

Lucato, Maria Carolina 09 September 2009 (has links)
Bioethics is a science that emerged in the beginning of the 70s in the U.S. by aiming at creating a new connection between biologic science and values. Bioethics effectively arrived in Brazil in 1995 as of the foundation of the Sociedade Brasileira de Bioética [Brazilian Bioethics Society] and the publication of Decree 196/96 by the National Health Council, which rules over research with human beings in the country. Bioethics presents several models, wherein the Ontologically Based Personalism as created by Elio Sgreccia can be found. This train of thought is based on the human person, i.e. the person needs to be the assessment criteria before a bioethical dilemma. Every human person is a unitotality who is endowed with dignity. She is formed by physical, psychic, social, moral and spiritual dimensions. This model considers that all forms of human life begin upon conception and end with natural death. But this human person concept is not the only one within the bioethical scope. Thus, we intended to identify herein the human person concept used in Brazil through Gadamer\'s hermeneutics. 63 references from the Bireme website were collected through key-words identified in the revision of the literature. From among them, 50 were read completely and some categories were created so as to divide them, namely being: Beginning of Life, End of Life, Practicing Health, Public Health and Various Subjects. The texts were summarized and interpreted by aiming at identifying aspects concerning the human person concept. Aspects regarding the Ontologically Based Personalism were evinced as counterpoint to the concepts from other models within the discussions, and the criteria used to recognize the human person concept was the elementary experience that is understood as the one each person undergoes as of judgment criteria, as well as through the correspondence to its reality. In Brazil, most researchers consider life begins at any moment after conception when referring to the Beginning of life, as opposed to the concept of personalistic bioethics which understands the beginning of a new life happens upon conception. Regarding the end of life, the concepts are divided, whereby half of researched authors admit palliative care as an exit for terminally-ill patients for them to be soothed in their suffering, just as the Ontologically Based Personalism also suggests, and the other half thinks the person needs independence to decide the end of his life, offering hence an opening to euthanasia. In regard to practicing health, the principle of independence appears predominantly as part of the base of medical practice, whereby this principle appears in some articles as the part of the person with the biggest importance in the patienthealthcare team relation. For personalistic bioethics, the ultimate criterion before the clinical practice has to serve as the foundation for the human person. Authors who work with public healthcare themes showed evident aspects related to vulnerable groups and to the need of State intervention, wherein the emphasis on the persons leadership has been missing, in addition to sociability and subsidiarity. Concerning eugenics, authors speak of tolerance toward it and respecting the will of the majority of society, while personalistic bioethics speak of considering what is different and diverse through the acknowledgment of human dignity. Thus, the concepts related to the definition of the human person are quite diverse in Brazil. In summary, it is necessary to help the Brazilian bioethical community become acquainted with the concept of the person as resumed by the Ontologically Based Personalism, by looking at our experience and by having our own reality as judgment criteria, as well as using this experience of person when it is necessary to take decisions in regard to life.
