From the academy to the streets: Documenting the healing power of black feminist creative expression

Riley, Tunisia L 01 June 2009 (has links)
I explore through feminist content analysis how poetry, blogging, political narrative, and music are employed by Black women as a means of personal and political empowerment, healing, activism and feminist practice. I theorize the emergence of a new manifestation Black feminism represented in poetry, blogs, political narrative, and popular music-exploring its ties to the history of Black feminism. I seek to demonstrate how gender conscious Black women create poetry, blogs, political narratives, and music as the catalyst to spark anti-sexist activism in contemporary Black women who may or may not call themselves feminists.

Modes of Power: Time, Temporality, and Calendar Reform by Jesuit Missionaries in Late Imperial China

Blasingame, Ryan S 11 May 2013 (has links)
This work explores the relationship between time, temporality, and power by utilizing interactions between Jesuit missionaries and the Ming and Qing governments of late imperial China as a case study. It outlines the complex relationship between knowledge of celestial mechanics, methods of measuring the passage of time, and the tightly controlled circumstances in which that knowledge was allowed to operate. Just as the Chinese courts exercised authority over time and the heavens, so too had the Catholic Church in Europe. So as messengers of God’s authority, the Jesuits identified the importance of astronomical and temporal authority in Chinese culture and sought to convey the supremacy of Christianity through their mastery of the stars and negotiate positions of power within both imperial governments.

Cost structure characteristics of the Canadian telecommunications carriers : some empirical evidence from Bell Canada and Alberta Government Telephones (AGT)

Gentzoglanis, Anastassios, 1956- January 1988 (has links)
This dissertation addresses the issue of cost subadditivity of two Canadian telecommunications carriers, Bell Canada and Alberta Government Telephones (AGT). Multi-output, multi-input models of the production structure of Bell Canada and AGT are estimated under various alternative hypotheses. Subadditivity tests are conducted for both these companies in order to increase understanding of the issues concerning the deregulation of the Canadian telecommunications network and to assist policy makers in their decisions. / The hypothesis that both Bell Canada and AGT are natural monopolies cannot be rejected. Important cost savings are realized from having each of these firms alone in their respective markets producing the total of toll and local calls. Allowing competition in AGT's market would increase costs by approximately 20%, while costs in Bell Canada's market would increase by twice as much. It is found that Bell Canada's cost savings, though still quite important, are significantly reduced after 1983. Apparently, the high adjustment costs that Bell Canada incurs in installing new capital equipment, its organizational restructuring that followed the liberalization of customer premises equipment in 1982 as well as the recent technological changes may explain this turn-about in Bell Canada's cost structure. / We conclude that the 1985 Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission's (CRTC) decision not to deregulate Bell Canada's long distance public voice monopoly market (MTS and WATS) was socially optimal.

An evaluation of pepperbean intercropping using different plant populations and bean cultivars

Teolis, Igino January 1994 (has links)
One of the advantages of intercropping has been the increase in yield over the monocultures. Intercrop yield can be improved by selecting for compatible cultivars and by efficient spacing arrangements of the component crops. A field experiment was conducted in the 1990 growing season to compare two spacing arrangements for the pepper/bean intercrop, to observe the effects of three bean cultivars on the system, and to examine whether there is any interaction between cropping system and bean cultivar. Three bean cultivars (Frenchie, Earliserve, and E-Z Pick), differing in their morphology and time to maturity, and one pepper cultivar (Hybrid Bell Boy) were used in the study. In the intercrop, the beans were sown at 50% of the optimum bean monocrop density while the peppers were planted at 100% or 50% of the optimum pepper monocrop density, resulting in 50:50 and 100:50 pepper/bean intercrop treatments. The experiment was repeated the following growing season with the addition of light transmission measurements, an $ sp{15}$N experiment to test for the possibility of nitrogen transfer, and the addition of three monocrop treatments (one for each cultivar) with the same intra-row spacing as in the intercrops. Beans were generally the dominant crop for both years. When compared to the optimum monocrops on a per plant basis, intercropping increased bean yields by 52% and 31% and decreased pepper yields by 49% and 21% in 1990 and 1991, respectively. The LER (Land Equivalent Ratio) ranged from 0.96 to 1.23 in 1990 and from 1.09 to 1.42 in 1991, with the 100:50 intercrops usually having the higher values. Frenchie and E-Z Pick were best suited for intercropping in 1990 and 1991, respectively. The overall increase in yields in intercropping was probably due to the larger bean intra-row spacing and the greater utilization of light, water and nutrients, as well as the increased population pressure in the 100:50 intercrop. Bean cultivars generally performed the same relative t

"I don't wanna hear about your band!" : tre feminister om musik, feminism och motstånd

Gustafsson, Amanda January 2014 (has links)
This thesis sets out to examine how feminist struggle can be negotiated, defined and motivated. By using Oral history as a theoretical and methodological framework, three persons narrative are being constructed, explored and discussed throughout the thesis. All the interviewees define themselves as women and feminists and have all practised music in different separatist rock and pop-groups from 1970 to present. Themes as music as political action, and separatism for persons who define themselves as women are discussed. The tree informants agree about some feministic goals such as equality and the right to be able to play and perform music regardless of gender identity, although the means to reach these goals are formulated differently.

Colliding Gravitational Plane Waves: Bell-szekeres Solution

Cambaz, Efsun 01 August 2005 (has links) (PDF)
The collision of pure electromagnetic plane waves with collinear polarization in Einstein-Maxwell theory and the collision of gravitational plane waves in vacuum Einstein theory are studied. The singularity structure of the Bell-Szekeres and the Szekeres solutions is examined by using curvature invariants. As a final work, the collision of the plane waves in dilaton gravity theory is studied and also the singularity structure of the corresponding space-time is examined.
