L'objectif de ce travail de recherche est l'étude des posibilités offertes par une nouvelle approche de l'information quantique basée sur des variables quantiques continues. Lorsque ces variables continues sont portées par le champs éléctromagnétique, un grand nombre de protocoles d'information quantique peuvent être implémentés à l'aide de lasers et d'éléments d'optique linéaire standards. Cette simplicité expérimentale rend cette approche très intéressantes d'un point de vue pratique, en particulier pour le développement des futurs réseaux de communications quantiques.<p><p>Le travail peut se diviser en deux parties complémentaires. Dans la première partie, plus fondamentale, la relation complexe qui existe entre l'intrication et la nonlocalité de la mécanique quantique est étudiée sur base des variables optiques continues. Ces deux ressources étant essentielles pour l'information quantique, il est nécessaire de bien les comprendre et de bien les caractériser. Dans la seconde partie, orientée vers des applications concrètes, le problème de la correction d'erreur à variables continues est étudié. Pouvoir transmettre et manipuler l'information sans erreurs est nécessaire au bon développemnent de l'information quantique, mais, en pratique, les erreurs sont inévitables. Free will in device-independent cryptography

Device-independent cryptography provides security in various tasks whilst removing an assumption that cryptographers previously thought of as crucial -- complete trust in the machinations of their experimental apparatus. The theory of Bell inequalities as a proof of indeterminism within nature allows for secure device-independent schemes requiring neither trust in the cryptographers' devices nor reliance on the completeness of quantum mechanics. However, the extreme paranoia attributable to the relaxed assumptions within device independence requires an explicit consideration of the previously assumed ability of the experimenters to freely make random choices. This thesis addresses the so-called `free will loophole', presenting Bell tests and associated cryptographic protocols robust against adversarial manipulation of the random number generators with which measurements in a Bell test are selected. We present several quantitative measures for this experimental free will, otherwise known as measurement dependence. We discuss how an eavesdropper maliciously preprogramming the experimenters' untrusted devices can falsely simulate the violation of a Bell inequality. We also bound the amount of Bell violation achievable within a certain degree of measurement dependence. This analysis extends to device-independent randomness expansion, bounding the guessing probability and estimating the amount of privacy amplification required to distil private randomness. The protocol is secure against either arbitrary no-signalling or quantum adversaries. We also consider device-independent key distribution, studying adversarial models that exploit the free will loophole. Finally, we examine a model correlated between the random number generators and Bell devices across multiple runs of a Bell test. This enables an explicit exposition of the optimal cheating strategy and how the correlations manifest themselves within this strategy. We prove that there remain Bell violations for a sufficiently high, yet non-maximal degree of measurement dependence which cannot be simulated by a classical attack, regardless of how many runs of the experiment those choices are correlated over.

Bell inequalities with Orbital Angular Momentum of Light / Inégalités de Bell avec le Moment Angulaire Orbital de la lumière

Dans une première partie introductive, nous rappelons la description théorique de la propagation de faisceaux optiques en terme des modes solutions de l'équation de propagation dans l'approximation paraxialle. Dans ce cadre, nous présentons les notions de moment cinétique transporté par les faisceaux lumineux, et de sa décomposition en moment cinétique intrinsèque (ou spin) et en moment angulaire.La seconde partie est consacrée au codage de l'information dans les degrés de libertés de polarisation et de modes transverses des faisceaux optiques. Les modes spin-orbites sont définis et un dispositif expérimental optique pour produire ces modes est présenté. Les modes spin-orbites sont alors exploités pour implémenter un protocole de distribution de clés BB84 ne nécessitant pas le partage à priori d'une base de référence.Dans une troisième partie, nous proposons un critère de type inégalité de Bell, qui constitue une condition suffisante pour caractériser la non-séparabilité en spin-orbite d'un faisceau optique classique. Nous montrons ensuite que la notion de modes spin-orbite séparable ou non-séparable constitue une analogie pertinente avec la notion d'intrication d'états quantiques et permet l'étude de certaines de ses propriétés fondamentales. Enfin, une implémentation expérimentale de cette simulation de tests de Bell avec des faisceaux optiques classiques est présentée, ainsi que sa description détaillée dans le cadre de l'optique quantique.Dans une dernière partie, nous nous intéressons à des inégalités de Bell, pour des états quantiques de systèmes quantiques à deux parties, qui sont caractérisées chacune par une variable continue de type angulaire (périodique). Nous montrons comment détecter la non-localité sur ce type de système, avec des inégalités qui sont similaires aux inégalités CHSH; inégalités qui avaient été développées originellement pour des systèmes de type spin 1/2. Nos inégalités, sont construites à partir de la mesure de la corrélation de fonctions angulaires. Nous montrons qu'elles sont en fait la superposition continue d'inégalités CHSH de type spin 1/2. Nous envisageons une possible implémentation expérimentale, où les corrélations mesurées sont les corrélations angulaires du profil transverse des photons intriqués. / We shall present a theoretical description of paraxial beams, showing the propagation modes that arise from the solution of the paraxial equation in free space. We then discuss the angular momentum carried by light beams, with its decomposition in spin and orbital angular momentum and its quantization. We present the polarization and transverse modes of a beam as potential degrees of freedom to encode information. We define the Spin-Orbit modes and explain the experimental methods to produce such modes. We then apply the Spin-Orbit modes to perform a BB84 quantum key distribution protocol without a shared reference frame.We propose a Bell-like inequality criterion as a sufficient condition for the spin-orbit non-separability of a classical laser beam. We show that the notion of separable and non-separable spin-orbit modes in classical optics builds a useful analogy with entangled quantum states, allowing for the study of some of their important mathematical properties. We present a detailed quantum optical description of the experiment in which a comprehensive range of quantum states are considered.Following the study of Bell's inequalities we consider bipartite quantum systems characterized by a continuous angular variable θ. We show how to reveal non-locality on this type of system using inequalities similar to CHSH ones, originally derived for bipartite spin 1/2 like systems. Such inequalities involve correlated measurement of continuous angular functions and are equivalent to the continuous superposition of CHSH inequalities acting on two-dimensional subspaces of the infinite dimensional Hilbert space. As an example, we discuss in detail one application of our results, which consists in measuring orientation correlations on the transverse profile of entangled photons.

Using Precisionism Within American Modern Art as Stylistic Inspiration for 3D Digital Works

This thesis presents the analysis of artistic techniques of paintings from the Precisionist movement and the implementation of the results of the analysis in the creation of three new works of art using digital media. Artists working in digital media express features of pre-digital artistic movements with varying degrees of adherence to principles, intentions, and awareness. This thesis seeks to create a bridge between the recognition of common features of Precisionist works and the expression of those elements in new works through the use of a system of analysis, interpretation, and translation. One outcome of this thesis is the description of a methodology for interpretation and translation that can be applied to other art movements. The Precisionist period within the Modern Art movement has both a historical importance in the world of art and a thematic relevance to popular uses of digital media ? specifically the representation of meaning and mood derived from industrial settings. Its influences can be traced from cubist, futurist, and constructivist art, as well as influencing the development of surrealism. It is considered the first solely American movement within Modern Art. Charles Sheeler's work plays a key role in the visual analysis portion of this research. Sheeler's work offers examples for applying 2D precisionist artistic style as aesthetic inspiration in creating a three-part production of 3D digital and video work. Work from precisionist artists Charles Demuth and Edmund Lewandowski also contribute some unique artistic characteristics considered during the analytical portion of this study. The new artistic works proposed include: (1) a linear, live-action short video with post-production manipulation; (2) a linear, 3D animated work; and (3) a non-linear, interactive 3D game environment.

Un phénomène d'intrication entre des photons a été observé dans les années 80 par l'équipe dirigée par Alain Aspect. Cette observation a permis de rendre compte du caractère non local de ce phénomène. Nous verrons comment transposer les expériences d'optique au domaine des atomes froids. Une étude nouvelle d'une source d'atomes corrélée (intriquée ?) en impulsion sera présentée et des expériences d'interférences multiples seront analysées. L'objectif final de notre étude est de montrer qu'un test de violation des inégalités de Bell avec des atomes corrélés en impulsion est possible. C'est une expérience de physique fondamentale qui, si elle réussit, ouvre une porte sur la mesure d'effets de la gravité sur l'intrication, un des grands enjeux de la physique actuelle. / It has been experimentally demonstrated in the 1980s by Alain Aspect that the polarization entanglement between two photons can exist and consequently that the locality is no longer valid in this type of experiment. In our experiments, we seek to highlight this kind of phenomenon on atoms. Measurements will focus on external variables such as speed and we will see what tools we need to achieve them. It is a fundamental physics experiment that, if successful, opens the door to measures of possible effects between gravity and entanglement.

近二、三十年來, 許多學者如Bell(1979)均主張, 在先進社會中, 社會型態已由工業 主導逐漸轉變為資訊取向, 即目前一般所稱的資訊社會。基本上, 資訊社會的討論是 一種對未來社會預期性的構想, 面臨社會型態的變遷, 我們亟需科學的指標, 作為衡 量社會發展的依據。 Machlup(1962) 率先使用資訊部門與資訊工業的觀念, 作為評估資訊活動的重要性以 來, 後續的研究大多側重從經濟的角度評估資訊活動。根據資訊社會的理論, 可以預 期的是, 社會中資訊體系的資訊產量應該大幅成長。日本在這方面作了拓荒工作, 多 次對其社會中各傳播媒介所傳遞的資訊數量進行普查。美國學者Pool(1984)和日本學 者則更進一步延伸日本的調查, 成為跨國比較( 美、日兩國 )的資訊數量調查。 近十幾年來, 國內對資訊社會觀念的推行與資訊科技應用之推動, 皆不遺餘力。自戒 嚴與報禁解除以來, 國內資訊綱路更是日益暢通。但始終缺乏相關的測量工具, 以作 為對我國資訊化過程作一觀察與評估的標準。基於此, 本研究探討以下之問題: 一、資訊社會概念的澄清。 二、發展一套可據以觀察、評估國內大眾傳播媒介的資訊生產量的測量工具。 三、根據發展出來的測量工具, 進行實際測試。 四、對資料的政策意涵提出說明。 本研究報告共分五章: 第一章緒論: 第二章文獻探討; 第三章研究方法; 第四章資料 分析; 第五章結論與建議。

Bell beaker copper use in central Europe : a distinctive tradition? : a re-evaluation of the composition of copper artefacts and its effects on the properties of the metal

This thesis is concerned with the manufacture of copper artefacts by the users of Bell Beaker pottery in the Eastern Bell Beaker group in central Europe, and addresses the question: did these metalworkers have distinct metallurgical abilities, techniques and preferences that set them apart from contemporary and earlier metal-using groups in the same region? Can we talk of a 'Bell Beaker' metallurgical tradition? Despite the long history of research into the so-called Bell Beaker phenomenon, there has been no definite answer to this question. The composition of copper artefacts is influenced by the production process and the composition of the ore, and so two artefacts that share a similar composition reflect a metallurgical similarity. Artefact composition is defined by variations in trace element impurities that are contained in the copper. Trace elements, however, do not only point to metallurgical processes: they also affect the physical and chemical properties of the metal. Consequently, this thesis aims to clarify whether the distribution of the Bell Beaker phenomenon throughout central Europe and its dissociation from other archaeologically visible groups there is associated with the use of a specific metallurgical tradition. It will be argued that if metal workers of other archaeological groups of the 3rd millennium BC, such as the Corded Ware complex, dealt with different types of copper, having different properties, this would give an insight into the relationship between those people and the Bell Beaker phenomenon in central Europe. In order to explore these issues, a database of some 1943 trace element analyses of Chalcolithic copper objects from central Europe has been created, then statistically grouped and evaluated according to two questions: firstly, were metalworkers selecting specific types of copper for their physical and chemical properties? Secondly, are Eastern Bell Beaker copper artefacts made from specific types of copper? The result of the statistical evaluation has demonstrated that, generally, copper artefacts with higher impurity levels are more common throughout the 3rd millennium BC than in earlier periods. In particular, higher concentrations of arsenic, antimony, lead and nickel (> c. 2%) indicate that these types of copper have improved properties (e.g. hardness, tensile strength, malleability). Furthermore, with the appearance of archaeological remains classified as belonging to the Earliest Bronze Age (e.g. the Blechkreis and the Nitra group), there is an almost exclusive use of types of copper that contain even greater quantities of antimony, nickel and arsenic. These types of copper may have been preferred by metalworkers because their superior tensile strength and hardness improves the quality an artefact. It therefore appears that the metallurgical properties of copper were gradually improved throughout the Chalcolithic in central Europe. It seems that there was a network distributing copper over the area of this research, because the types of copper used by the Eastern Bell Beaker group do not show great regional variation. The uniformity of the archaeological records of the Eastern Bell Beaker group is also reflected in their metalworking tradition. However, it was for the first possible to clarify that the people of the Eastern Bell Beaker group did not deal with a specific type of copper compared with other archaeological groups. Bell Beaker copper types do not differ from those generally used throughout the 3rd millennium BC, albeit that only a small set of Bell Beaker artefacts (chiefly daggers and awls) has provided trace element analyses. As neither regional nor cultural specific metallurgy can be detected for this period, it is argued that the Eastern Bell Beaker group is – at least in metallurgical terms – connected with other local communities in central Europe. Consequently, metallurgy cannot be cited as a defining factor of archaeological groups in central Europe during the 3rd millennium BC. In terms of the Corded Ware and Bell Beaker groups, metallurgical expertise was probably at the same level of knowledge. Hence, even if the types of copper artefact that were manufactured were ‘culture-specific’, the manufacturing techniques and the access to resources were not restricted to a single archaeological group. It can therefore cautiously be suggested that, between c. 2700 and 2000 BC, metallurgists – perhaps as itinerant craftsmen – produced copper artefacts according to the demands of their ‘customers’.
