The Life and Contribution of Robert Monroe Bell

Berry, Claire E. 01 January 1965 (has links)
Since 1941, R. M. Bell has devoted his life to the training of ministers as the President of Johnson Bible College, Kimberlin Heights, Tennessee. During his tenure as president he has represented a point of view that has played both a distinctive and controversial role in the life of our Brotherhood. It is the purpose of this study to examine his life historically with emphasis on the events and influences that helped shape his life and thought. His theological positions will be surveyed and a critique given regarding the contribution his life and thought has had in the Christian church.

Computational Progress towards Maximum Distinguishability of Bell States by Linear Evolution and Local Measurement

Shang, Victor 01 January 2016 (has links)
Many quantum information protocols rely on the ability to distinguish between entangled quantum states known as Bell states. However, theoretical limits exist on the maximal distinguishability of these entangled states using linear evolution and local measurement (LELM) devices. In the case of two particles entangled in multiple qubit variables, the maximum number of distinguishable Bell states is known. However, in the more general case of two particles entangled in multiple qudit variables, only an upper bound is known under additional assumptions. I have written software in Matlab and Mathematica to explore computationally the maximum number of Bell states that can be distinguished in the case of two particles entangled in a qutrit variable, and the case of two particles entangled in both a qutrit and qubit variable. Using code I have written in Mathematica, I have reduced the number of cases to check for sets of 9 qubit x qutrit Bell states from 94,143,280 to 10,365. Further work needs to be done to computationally check these cases for distinguishability by an LELM apparatus.

Serve the Ones Below: The Dramaturgy of SWEENEY TODD

Hegarty, Michael 03 May 2013 (has links)
This thesis is a personal journey. My work on VCU’s production of SWEENEY TODD began in the Spring of 2012 when I came on board the production as dramaturg. Part of what is contained within is both an explanation of my dramaturgical research method as well as samples of the research I have compiled. However, my role was drastically changed in the Fall of 2012 when I was cast as the primary antagonist in the production. The thesis chronicles the rehearsal process as my role as dramaturg increasingly gave way to my role as actor. It attempts to answer the question, “Is it possible to be both dramaturg and actor on a single production?” Finally, the thesis is a reflection of the overall process of working on a challenging theatrical production in an academic setting.

Heritage Braided

Jackson, Akiko B. 14 May 2009 (has links)
The awareness of marginality, oppression, and hierarchy at an early age directly influences the creation of work specific to my identity as a woman of color. Born and raised on an island in the Pacific Ocean, I was aware of my sense of location and space relative to the world. The vast ocean separating me from the ‘mainland’ created a specific understanding of marginality, of what is “main” and what is “minor,” and how these categorical placements continued from my youth to ongoing perpetuation. The work I create has a subtle and persistent investigation into my identity as a socio-economic and ethnic minority woman. I attempt to translate and address my identity and cultural significance by creating works that bring about question and dialogue dealing with cultural normative values. My work subtly addresses theories of alienation, burden, heritage, and identity. I use materials and/or focus on importance of materiality to imply an inherent meaning through historical root, core, and/or initial function. Often this function has fixed placement in certain cultures and society. Although the work is visually and conceptually dark in nature, the desired feeling includes a very physical response while coexisting within the installation’s environment. Oppositional Gaze is a video based on my personal experience. I approach making from a lived and ongoing experience that is constant. On an ordinary day, I often witness acts of repression, acts of injustice, and absurd occurrences that are either directed at me or observed toward others. I impose inner turmoil upon myself of whether or not I shall respond or absorb what I have witnessed. These experiences have emerged at a time in my life, in a place I considered to be a dislocation of my physical presence in relation to my constant neighbor, with a metaphysical questioning of placement. The video is a visual and auditory whisper that reflects my internalized struggle. These true encounters of questions, statements, and name-calling were specifically chosen to address this reality on a large screen, symbolic to the hovering subjection of prejudices and stereotypes that resonate within me. These encounters are unexpected, yet not surprising when they happen due to the frequency of their occurrence.

Unearthing Real Women: Reclaiming Sylvia Plath and Virginia Woolf from Their Suicide Narratives

Dunn, Jessica 13 May 2016 (has links)
Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath are two well-known women writers of the twentieth century who committed suicide. The narratives created by their deaths have in some instances become as important as the canonical work they produced. In an effort to understand their motivations and struggles, critics and the public alike have sometimes reduced these women to victims of the patriarchy, mental illness, or even themselves. Beginning with my own discovery of this issue in the legacies of Plath and Woolf combined with my personal dealings with suicide in my family, I recount how I lost these two women as exemplary figures because of their choice to commit suicide. I then take a look at what others have said about their deaths and how it has affected their legacies as writers. Finally, I take a look at Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway and Plath’s The Bell Jar for an alternate perspective on suicide. Through this journey, I recount how I have been able to regain my respect for these two talented women by considering multiple viewpoints and acknowledging the nuance inherent in any account.

Connaissances des sociétés insulaires armoricaines par l’étude archéométrique du mobilier céramique : les réseaux d’échanges îles-continent : évolution du Néolithique à la période gallo-romaine / Knowledge of the armorican island societies by the archaeometric study of ceramic materials : the exchange networks islands-mainland : evolution from the Neolithic to the Gallo-Roman period

Gehres, Benjamin 22 April 2016 (has links)
This thesis proposes to grasp the development of the ceramic productions and exchanges between the islands and the mainland since the Neolithic to the gallo-roman period.Through archaeometric approaches of ceramics, we question the role of the islands Brittany in the development of communication networks and movement of people and products. Thus, determining the local or exogenous nature of a production, it is possible to identify the degree of openness or withdrawal of an occupation and its integration into trade networks. For this, several analytical methods have been implemented at different scales, in relation to the typological datas of the ceramics. Macroscopic observations, on the surface treatments were carried out as microscopic observations in thin sections, which will identify the mineral assemblage in the clay, and to determine the geological and geographical origin of pottery. The study of paste is complemented with analysis by SEM-EDS, XR-D and HH-XRF. At last, a new methodological approach applied to the provenance of archaeological ceramics was developed: the analysis by LA-ICP-MS of natural or artificial inclusions in the potteries. The chronological framework of this study, from the Neolithic to the Gallo-Roman period allows to follow the evolution of the ceramic characteristics, the locations of supply and production. The interpretation of these analysis is put into perspective in a broader considerations on the status of island sites: are they production centers or dependent occupations from continental centers?

No. of bitstreams: 1 Ariele Carneiro de Andrade.pdf: 1066650 bytes, checksum: 26d95d8f20aec5260de9adb89d2195cd (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-07-15 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The bell pepper (Capsicum annum L.) crop is one of the most important vegetables grown in Brazil, and has been showing significant growth. However, this culture can be affected by a number of diseases that cause economic damage and anthracnose, still represent a serious obstacle to production, both in the field and at home-de-vegetation. Anthracnose in Capsicum annum can be caused by several species of fungi of the genus Colletotrichum, but in Brazil, the majority of reports identify Colletotrichum gloeosporioides as the main causative agent of the disease. Infections characterized in lesions aerial parts of the plants such fruits, stems and leaves. The control method of the infections is used in fungicidal applications, however currently search for more sustainable alternatives. Thus the use of resistance inducers has been outstanding and can be applied preventively, by acting on the physiological and biochemical processes of plants. Given the above, the objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of acibenzolar-S-methyl inducer for the control of anthracnose in pepper plants as well as the activation of enzymes related to pathogenicity and they peroxidase, polifeniloxidase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and β-1,3-glucanase.. The study was conducted in a greenhouse in Garanhuns-PE municipality, and the treatments were arranged in subdivided portion, in which the portion consisted of collection times and the subplot of different inducer of doses, with four replications. The plants were treated with the treatments as follows: 0.15g L-1; 0.30g L-1; 0.45g L-1, 0.60g L-1 acibenzolar-S-methyl (Syngenta®) and control (distilled water only). The results were analyzed by the software program SAEG 5.0 to 5% probability. The peroxidase activity was not significant for analysis of variance at 5% probability, however the dose 0.45g L-1 promoted greater activity. For peroxidase although not significant ascorbate activity to analysis of variance, the dose 0.15g L-1 showed increased activity of this enzyme is superior to the control. The increase in catalase activity was significant when the plants were treated with the highest dose of 0.60g L-1 inducer. On the eighth day after inoculation was higher by polyphenol oxidase activity, standing out from the others collection times. The dose 0.60g L -1 promoted greater activity of β-1,3-glucanase enzyme. When the plants medium subjected to the application of acibenzolar-S-methyl there was a reduction in the severity as the doses increased, thereby showing that prior treatment with resistance inducer consists of an efficient method for control of anthracnose disease.
