Paleoproterozoic basins in the Trans-North China Orogen: stratigraphic sequences, U-PB ages and HF isotopes of detritalzircons and tectonic implications

Liu, Chaohui, 刘超辉 January 2011 (has links)
The Trans-North China Orogen (TNCO) has been recognized as a continent-continent collisional belt along which the Eastern and Western Blocks amalgamated to form the North China Craton. However, controversy has surrounded the timing and tectonic processes involved in the collision between the two blocks, ranging from the westward-directed subduction with final collision at ~2.5 Ga, through the west-dipping subduction with two collisional events at ~2.1 Ga and ~1.85 Ga, to the eastward-directed subduction with final collision at ~1.85 Ga. This project aims to present detailed lithostratigraphic, geochronological and isotopic data for the low-grade supracrustal successions in the TNCO to examine current models and to establish a reasonable scenario for the tectonic evolution of the TNCO in the Paleoproterozoic. The low-grade supracrustal successions include the Hutuo and Yejishan Groups in the middle sector of the TNCO and the Songjiashan, Lower Zhongtiao, Upper Zhongtiao, Danshanshi and Songshan Groups in the southern sector. Lithostratigraphic data indicate that the Songjiashan, Lower Zhongtiao Groups and lower parts of the Hutuo and Yejishan Groups are composed of metaclastic rocks, carbonates and metavolcanic rocks, interpreted as back-arc basin deposits, whereas the Upper Zhongtiao, Danshanshi, Songshan Groups and the upper parts of the Hutuo and Yejishan Groups consist only of metaconglomerates and metasandstones, interpreted as foreland basin deposits. To constrain the provenance and maximum depositional ages for these low-grade supracrustal successions, the LA-MC-ICP-MS technique was applied to analyze U-Pb and Hf isotopic compositions for detrital zircons from them. For the Hutuo and Yejishan Groups, we found major age peaks at ~2.5 and ~2.2 Ga and minor amounts of 2.8-2.6 Ga detrital zircons, which are consistent with ages of the lithological units in the middle sector of the TNCO. On the other hand, for the Songjiashan, Lower Zhongtiao, Upper Zhongtiao, Danshanshi and Songshan Groups, detrital zircons from them have the major age population of 2.85-1.95 Ma and the minor age population of 3.6-3.1 Ga, of which the former is comparable with ages of the lithological units in the southern sector of the TNCO and the latter was derived from the Paleoarchean and Mesoarchean crust of the Eastern Block. The maximum depositional ages of the low-grade supracrustal successions have also been well constrained in this study. For the back-arc basin deposits, their maximum depositional ages were constrained between ~2.15 and ~2.10 Ga. For the foreland basin deposits, the presence of ~1.85 Ga detrital zircons indicates that they were deposited after this time. Taken together, we present a brief scenario for the evolution of the sedimentary basins in the TNCO. At 2.15-2.10 Ga, a series of back-arc basins developed behind an “Andean-type” arc that were subsequently incorporated into the TNCO during the collision of the Eastern and Western Blocks. At ~1.85 Ga, the two blocks collided along the TNCO, resulting in the crustal thickening followed by rapid exhumation/uplift, which shifted the back-arc basins to foreland basins. Such a shift in the late Paleoproterozoic supports the model that the collision between the Eastern and Western Blocks occurred at ~1.85 Ga. / published_or_final_version / Earth Sciences / Doctoral / Doctor of Philosophy

A Geochemical and Isotopic Investigation of Metasedimentary Rocks from the North Caribou Greenstone Belt, Western Superior Province, Canada

Duff, Jason 30 April 2014 (has links)
The North Caribou Greenstone Belt (NCGB) lies at the core the granitoid-dominant North Caribou Terrane (NCT). Two sedimentary assemblages; the Eyapamikama (ELS) and Zeemal-Heaton Lake (ZHA) form the core of the NCGB. Geochemistry of garnets from the orogenic Au deposit at Musselwhite suggest that the auriferous fluids have a contribution of metamorphic fluids and mineralization consisted of prolonged, multi-stage periods. Chemical zoning suggests changes in the influx of chalcophile and lithophile elements and that Au/sulphide ratios during nucleation were lower relative to later growth events. Zircons from the ELS and ZHA suggest a c. 100 My hiatus in the onset of sedimentation, with the ZHA showing younger, “Timiskaming-type” ages. Age distributions from each assemblage reflect proximal, igneous sources. Nd isotopic compositions of the ZHA suggest a mixture of ancient and contemporaneous sources which are similar to external TTG rocks. Deplete mantle model ages of the ZHA rocks indicate a Mesoarchean inheritance.

Strategier mot urban sprawl i svenska städer : En fallstudie av åtta svenska kommuners arbete

Mattsson, Robin January 2014 (has links)

Superimposition of Contractional Structures in Models and Nature

Deng, Hongling January 2015 (has links)
Superimposition of contractional structures is widely observed in different scales in the world. Superimposed structures form due to different processes: change in strain accommodation from one type of structure to another during a single progressive shortening; successive coaxial shortening phases separated by an unconformity; superimposition of different non-coaxial shortening phases. Using results of a series of systematic analogue models and detailed field structural mapping, this thesis focuses on the geometry and kinematics of such superimposed structures that are formed by these three processes. During a single progressive folding, thrusts develop within a fold to accommodate stain variations in different regime of the fold. Limited displacement along these thrusts does not significantly modify the geometry of the fold. However, during multiple shortening phases (coaxial or non-coaxial), early formed structures are modified by the later phase ones. The later thrusts can cut and displace the pre-existing structures. The early folds are tightened or interfered by the later folding phase. Pre-existing thrusts may be reactivated either in dip direction and/or along strike during the later shortening. The pre-existing structures in turn influence development of the later structures, which results in change in structure spacing. An angular unconformity between two shortening phases clearly truncates the early phase structures and separates structures of different levels. Unlike in the post-erosional layers, in the layers below the unconformity, complicated superimposed structures are visible. This thesis shows that geometry and sequence of structures formed during one progressive shortening or multiple shortening phases strongly depend on the mode of the superimposition (coaxial, orthogonal or oblique) and the orientation of pre-existing structures.

Gold exploration northeast of Ngundu Halt, northern marginal zone of the Limpopo Belt, Zimbabwe

Simango, Robert Zulu 30 May 2013 (has links)
Gold exploration was conducted in northern margin, granulite-facies rocks of the Limpopo Belt. Methods used in the prospecting include drainage, soil and rock geochemistry, geophysical surveys, geological mapping, trenching and diamond drilling. These techniques successfully led to the discovery of two medium size, mesothermal gold deposits (Grid 2s and Grid 4). Objectives of this study were to (a) document the exploration methodology used; (b) describe the regional geology; (c) establish a mineral deposit model; (d) outline the methods and results of various exploration techniques; (e) outline follow-up procedures and evaluation of anomalies; and (f) discuss results of the exploration exercise and conclusions. The granulite-facies terrain comprises Charno-enderbites, mafic and felsic to intermediate metavolcanic rocks and meta-sediments. Renco Mine situated immediately east of the study area, was selected as the ore deposit model for the exploration program. Gold mineralization occurs in shear and thrust zones within an enderbite. The gold deposits are structurally controlled by a first-order, Sinistral transcrustal Mauch Shear Zone, which is parallel to a regional east-northeast penetrative foliation. The deposits are in dilation zones where the Mauch Shear (a) is intersected by a dextral east-west shear (Grid 2s), or (b) has a sinistral splay (Grid 4 and Renco). Close to these deposits, the Mauch Shear is in contact with a "greenstone belt", which is a possible source of crustal metamorphic ore fluids and gold. The Grid 2s deposit contains fine-grained, disseminated free gold, and small amounts of pyrrhotite, pyrite and chalcopyrite in quartz veins within third-order shears in K-feldspar granite. K-feldspar, sericitic, silicic, sulphidation and carbonate alteration characterizes the deposit, which has a proposed mantle-degassing model. The Grid 4 deposit is magmatic porphyry-type, with CuMo and Au in third- and fourth-order shears respectively. Mineralization comprises disseminated to semi-massive pyrrhotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, bismuth, molybdenite and gold. Wall rock alteration includes biotitic, chloritic, silicic, sulphidation and carbonate. In Grid 2s, Grid 4 and Renco deposits, the alteration mineral assemblages are in three facies, which are granulite, amphibolte and greenschist. In the three deposits, the mineralization occurs with the amphibolite-facies, indicating post-peak, retrograde metamorphic conditions. / Illustrations (maps) only available in print form at Cory Library / KMBT_363 / Adobe Acrobat 9.54 Paper Capture Plug-in

Programação linear na análise de viabilidade técnica e econômica de projeto multimina

Silva, Pedro Augusto Costa January 2016 (has links)
Production costs of iron ore varies according to the specificity of each mine. In the mining phase, some of the largest operational costs are associated to the haulage distance and the stripping ratio. In this context, the implementation of the multiple mines project and the conveyor belts at the Itabira Complex Mines aims to optimize these two indicators. The multiple mines methodology focuses on reducing the overall stripping ratio of the complex, and the implementation of conveyor belts mitigates the increase of the haulage distance. Two mines and a stock pile are available to feed three different concentration plants. The goal is to achieve the best way to feed the plants considering the economic aspects. A linear goal programming model is proposed to determine the best iron ore mass feeding the plants from different mines, taking into account the least haulage distance and the smallest stripping ratio. This optimization model was developed using LINGO Software to interface with EXCEL and evaluate diversified scenarios. The results showed that the method of multiple mines is a technical and economically viable method for mine planning at the Itabira Complex.
