An Exploratory Investigation of the Effects of Dragon Boating on the Psychosocial Well-Being of Female Cancer Survivors

Vanherweg, Clara Therese Louise 01 August 2011 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to prospectively examine the effects of dragon boat participation on the psychosocial well-being of female cancer survivors over time and compared with the population-based norms. Nine female cancer survivors belonging to the dragon boat team, SurvivOars, participated in the initial measurement process. The measurement packet was 21 page compilation of psychosocial questionnaires capturing demographics, quality of life, moods, depressive symptoms, perceived stress, self-esteem, self-efficacy, social support, physical activity levels, body image, and sedentary behaviors. After 8 weeks, 8 subjects completed the same follow-up questionnaire to assess changes in psychosocial variables over time. Scores were also compared to population-based norms from previous studies of similar groups of cancer survivors who did not participate in dragon boating. Results indicated no significant changes in psychosocial scores over the 8-week period. However, compared with population norms, significantly better psychosocial functioning was found in the dragon boating survivors compared with non-dragon boating survivors in quality of life, mood, self-esteem, perceived stress, body image, and depressive symptoms (p<0.05). These findings suggest dragon boat participation among female cancer survivors may be beneficial to their quality of life and psychosocial well-being after disease.

Cultural identity and resident perceptions of recreational boating and the BLM : a case study from a gateway community / Influence of cultural identity on resident perceptions of recreational boating and the BLM : a case study from a gateway community

Torres, Tami McMillen 19 October 2001 (has links)
Conflict among residents of a gateway community regarding the breadth of perceptions of impacts from commercial whitewater rafting and the need for mitigating policies persists despite an intensive planning process and implementation of policies to mitigate negative effects. With an overarching purpose of exploring the nature of conflict, specific study objectives are 1) to characterize Pilar resident perceptions of recreation and the BLM, 2) to describe how Pilar as a community adjusts to recreation, and 3) to characterize Pilar resident expectations of BLM regarding recreation impacts. Methods include coding interview transcriptions, participant observation summaries, meeting minutes, and public comments on an environmental impact statement. Findings suggest that perceptions of recreational boating are influenced by factors such as occupation and place attachment and that these factors also determine group interaction and reactions to commercial boating and BLM policies. / Graduation date: 2002

ANALYSIS OF USER ATTITUDES REGARDING MANAGEMENT POLICY OF COLORADO RIVER FLOAT TRIPS

Johnson, Robert Chester, 1944- January 1980 (has links)
A dramatic increase in the number of individuals taking float trips on the Colorado River through Grand Canyon National Park has occurred over the last decade. The National Park Service has attempted to protect the fragile river corridor from "overuse" through implementation of the 1979 River Management Plan. A survey of users taking float trips through Marble and Grand Canyons has been conducted to measure attitudes about National Park Service management policies of the river trips. The study has been designed to categorize users along a wildernist scale and determine whether a difference in attitude concerning river management policy existed between more wilderness oriented participants and less wilderness oriented participants. Users have been categorized into three wildernist categories: Neutralists, Slight Wildernists, and Moderate Wildernists. Attitudes regarding river and canyon management policy were significantly different between wilderness categories in ten of sixteen policy questions. Also, a significant difference existed in attitudes when comparing pre- and post-trip responses. Mode of travel was associated with mean wilderness scores. Two survey instruments have been used in the study: a self-administered questionnaire and a paired-picture comparison interview. Description of the two instruments used as well as a discussion of the major findings are presented.

FEASIBILITY ANALYSIS OF THE DRIVE TRAIN ELECTRIFICATION FOR A RESCUE BOAT

Andruetto, Claudia January 2019 (has links)
Progressing constraints on green house gas emissions lead to a sustainability trend, which greatly a↵ects the transport sector. Nowadays, companies show increasing interest indeveloping sustainable solutions. This thesis has been started thanks to a project given by Sj¨or¨addningss¨allskapet, themost relevant association that performs sea rescue operations in Swedish waters.Sj¨or¨addningss¨allskapet would like to explore the possibility of making their rescue boat fleetentirely carbon-free, hence more sustainable. What may provide a suitable solution is an electric drive train with hybrid energy storage, composed by a battery pack and a fuel cell stack. The research question is whether it wouldbe feasible to combine fuel cell stacks and battery packs to provide power to a fast smallboat. From a sketch of a rescue boat, the drive train design for such boat is studied in itsintegrity, from the water jet pump to the battery and fuel cell systems. The required power has been calculated empirically, using data from online tests on waterjet boats. Di↵erent tests have been considered, resulting in a mean power curve and a meanconsumption curve and allowing comparison between the hybrid electric drive train withan internal combustion engine drive train.Three profiles of speed, power and consumption have been assumed for the calculation ofthe required energy and hence rate the energy storage system. A design has been proposedin terms of fuel cell capacity and battery capacity. The propulsion unit, composed by the electric machine and water jet, has been studied, focusing on di↵erent electric drive technologies. Few conclusions on both the weight andsustainability requirements are discussed.A sustainability analysis is carried out in terms of CO2 emissions, through a life cycleassessment accounting for the environmental impact of the system during the whole lifecycle, from cradle to grave.

The Nature of a Wooden Boat: Boat - House - Analogy

Harris, Kyle Hunter 27 June 2019 (has links)
This work seeks to explore the nature of a wooden boat and how a boat's design and construction can influence the building of a house. It is a search for a structure that bears a memory of a boat and celebrates the craft and care of which boats are built. The house is located on the north side of a secluded reservoir in the Northwest Georgia mountains. It is raised up on and supported by a structure that is reminiscent of the way a keel of a boat supports and connects the boat together. This structure extends out from the house to a small shelter for a boat over the water. On the interior, heavy frames support and give shape to the thin shell of the house. Their repetition encourages a view of the boat and its shelter. The house itself is thought of as a vessel, a place that provides a sense of holding, of protecting and keeping safe, and of strength. / Master of Architecture

Journey to a Boating Nation: Business Plan for a Leisure Marina

Chiu, Steven Unknown Date (has links)
The most skilled seafaring sailors in recorded human history came from Taiwan, known as the ancient Polynesians. Ilha Formosa, Taiwan’s former name given by the Portuguese in the 17th century signified its magnificent coastline and abundant ocean resources. During the 20th century, through political turmoil and warfare, Taiwan’s maritime accolades rested on its yacht building sector, achieving a place in the world’s top five rankings. However, Taiwan’s martial law and the lack of reform prohibited leisure marine activities, an industry creating valuable socioeconomic impact. By comparison, maritime regulation in Taiwan is far behind that of both developed and developing nations around the world today. With gradual lifting of restrictions and growing public demand, a leisure marine industry will hopefully thrive to enrich the lives of people living in Taiwan. This research provides an overview of marinas and its market opportunities in Taiwan through various revenue models. It concludes with a financial model to assess the viability of such an investment.

An Investigation of Invasion: Boater Knowledge Concerning Aquatic Invasive Species and the Influence of the New Zealand Mud Snail on Benthic Food Webs

Cimino, Samuel Anthony 24 May 2016 (has links)
Invasive species are second only to habitat loss as a leading cause of native species displacement and the management of invasive species costs hundreds of billions annually. Invasion is often conceptualized as a series of stages (Transport, Introduction, Establishment, and Spread), which encourages ecologists to isolate factors that might enable a species to pass from one stage to another and therefore guide prevention or impact management. This thesis addresses each stage of invasion and attempts to determine where management might succeed in preventing invasion or minimizing impacts. The transport and introduction of aquatic invasive species (AIS) was analyzed by conducting a three tier human subjects survey at Tenmile Lake, Oregon over a two year period in which a public boat wash station was built and installed. Assessing boater knowledge of AIS and understanding proper boat cleaning procedure is useful in determining the threat of transport and introduction as overland boater movements is a major vector of AIS. The comparison between pre- and post- boat wash surveys indicate that there is a disconnect between what boaters say they will do and how they actually behave. While 75.9% of boaters from the pre-survey claimed they would use a boat wash station at Tenmile Lake, only 38.5% of post-survey boaters were observed using the station. Furthermore, the surveys identified knowledge gaps of boaters' awareness of AIS. More than 20.0% of boaters surveyed could not verbally name any AIS. To better understand the establishment and spread stages of invasion, I examined the influence of a specific AIS, the New Zealand mud snail (Potamopyrgus antipodarum; NZMS), on benthic food webs throughout three very different aquatic ecosystems (lakes, rivers, and estuaries). Samples of benthic lake, river, and estuarine invertebrates were collected, identified, and counted, and stable isotope analyses (SIA) were conducted on several components of the food web. NZMS densities were found to be dynamic, with population densities fluctuating over time and between locations. A significant negative relationship between NZMS density and community diversity across all ecosystems was found. However, the densities of specific feeding groups had varying positive (omnivores) and negative (herbivores) correlations with NZMS densities. Furthermore, SIA indicated that NZMS don't appear to be competing with native macroinvertebrates for the same food source. NZMS were found to have different influences on each invaded ecosystem, thus management of this particular AIS is difficult once established and spreading. The results of this thesis suggest that prevention of the transport and introduction of NZMS needs to be the focus for future management. Preventative management should include public outreach regarding AIS and proper boat cleaning procedure, and management should also emphasize the need for regional policies and regulations on the transport of AIS rather than site or state specific policies and regulations.

Incorporating stakeholder preferences, attitudes, and use patterns into marine protected area planning: a case study of recreational boating in the southern Gulf Islands, British Columbia

Gray, Darcy Lawrence 22 December 2008 (has links)
Marine protected areas (MPAs) may be implemented as a means of managing human impacts on the marine environment; however, MPAs commonly have both biological and social goals, which are often addressed through the use of multiple use marine zoning. In British Columbia, 900 km2 of the waters surrounding the southern Gulf Islands are under consideration for a National Marine Conservation Area (NMCA). Should the NMCA be created, a marine zoning plan will be developed for the region. Research has shown that MPAs and associated zoning schemes are unlikely to be successful at meeting their conservation objectives if they are not accepted by, and responsive to the needs of, stakeholders. This study examines recreational boating in the southern Gulf Islands, within the context of the proposed NMCA. Specific areas of focus include: (1) activities, setting preferences, and sources of perceived conflict amongst boaters, (2) dimensions of support for and opposition to the concept of marine zoning amongst boaters, and (3) spatial patterns of recreational boating in the region. Methods included a focus group and a face-to face questionnaire, delivered to boaters in the southern Gulf Islands from June – September, 2007 (n=543, response rate=92%). Results show that there is variability in the environmental, social, and managerial setting preferences of recreational boaters, and that boat type has an influence across all three categories. Furthermore, several activities emerged as sources of perceived conflict for recreational boaters. Reasons provided as to the nature of these conflicts indicate that while some may be potentially addressed through marine zoning, others may be better mitigated through education and communication strategies. While a majority of boaters are supportive of the general concept of marine zoning, there are some issues and concerns that will need to be addressed as MPA implementation proceeds. Support for marine zoning was found to be strongly related to perceived benefits, particularly environmental benefits. Major dimensions of opposition included perceptions of over-regulation, fears of losing access for boating, and mistrust of government involvement in managing the marine environment. Spatial data was collected by asking respondents to indicate on a map the route of their current boating trip, resulting in a rich spatial dataset for recreational boating in the region. Mapping and display of this data indicates both hotspot destinations and heavily traveled corridors for recreational boating; furthermore, because spatial data can be linked to questionnaire variables, this dataset can provide the basis for a great deal of customized mapping and analysis related to spatial patterns of boating. Given that little information on recreational boating in the region existed prior to this study, results from all three areas of focus together make a significant contribution to understanding recreational boating in the southern Gulf Islands, and provides valuable information for MPA planners and managers. In addition, this study also contributes to MPA research, recreation and leisure research, and research examining methods of spatially characterizing boating activity.

Axelsson, Oskar, Örnstedt Björnbom, Nicklas January 2018 (has links)
